Meet the Schools of Lost Omens Rival Academies!

Wednesday, August 21, 2024

During Gen Con, we were finally able to reveal our newest Pathfinder setting book, Pathfinder Lost Omens Rival Academies! This book features Golarion’s most fantastic schools meeting and sharing their secrets in a grand Convocation. Over a dozen schools are attending, with each getting to show off its stories and teachings, but six sponsors are taking the main stage, so we thought we’d introduce them to you here!

These academies get to show off more of what they’re best at—not to mention, teach their secrets to player characters—whether that’s archetypes, gadgets, spells, wizard schools, or something else entirely. The six sponsors come from vastly different backgrounds, momentarily united in the dual goals of supporting a new academy at the edge of the devastated Sarkoris Scar and spreading some of their knowledge so that it cannot all be lost in a single disaster.

As with most academic gatherings, rivalry underscores the Convocation’s shared missions. In addition to sparking exhibits and clashes of wits, theories are tested daily on the demons that still linger in the lands of Sarkoris. With honest competition and underhanded dealings alike raising tensions, it’s important to know what side you’re on.

The Six Sponsors

Academy of the Reclamation symbol by Riccardo Rullo.
Academy of the Reclamation School Symbol featuring a circle with a red, blue, and silver fish at the center

The Academy of the Reclamation is a new school dedicated to rebuilding Sarkoris and reuniting the knowledge of its scattered descendants. Built in Nerosyan just across the river from the Sarkoris Scar, this academy is the host of the Six Schools’ Convocation. In addition to learning this ancestral lore and the secrets of Sarkoris’s old gods, its students are also exploring the lessons hidden in the Sarkoris Scar and brought home by their returning cousins.

Cobyslarni symbol by Riccardo Rullo.
Cobyslarni School Symbol featuring a green shield with a blue eye in the center and wings sticking out from the side

Cobyslarni is the name of both an institution and the titanic elephantine headmaster on whose back it rests. Normally found wandering through the fey realms of the First World, Cobyslarni’s teachings focus on the magical power of oaths and agreements. With their headmaster temporarily residing on the Convocation grounds, many of their students are having their first taste of the mortal world.

Kitharodian Academy symbol by Riccardo Rullo.
Kitharodian Academy symbol featuring two gold lions on either side of a blue harp over a green shield

Kitharodian Academy teaches acting and music in the heart of Taldor, with every generation finding new ways to recapture hints of that empire’s golden age. It also serves a secondary purpose as the recruiting and training grounds for the Lion Blades, the empire’s intelligence service. Despite this open secret, the school is legitimately concerned with preserving the knowledge of their fading homeland.

Magaambya symbol by Rogier van de Beek.
Magaambya symbol featuring a ten pointed star with a leaf between each point

The Magaambya passes on their teachings over millennia in the Mwangi Expanse, blending arcane and primal magics. As one of the oldest and most influential academies in the Inner Sea, the Magaambya is a major force behind the Six Schools’ Convocation and the broader efforts to aid the Sarkorian people. However, this influence does not sit well with all the other academies, especially those espousing radical new solutions.

Monastery of Unbreaking Waves symbol by Oleg Bulatnikov.
Insert Monastery of Unbreaking Waves School Symbol featuring a circle with a continuous wave rolling around the internal edge

The Monastery of Unbreaking Waves believes there are many paths to perfection, with theirs focusing on the flexibility and tenacity of water. This perfection is visible in a variety of martial and mystical arts, but their academy’s recovery after utter destruction may display it better. Grueling effort reconstructs the secrets of the few remaining books with new lessons from other schools in Jalmeray and even genies from the Plane of Water.

University of Lepidstadt symbol by Riccardo Rullo.
University of Lepidstadt School Symbol featuring a raven, an open book, and a crown.

The University of Lepidstadt blazes at the forefront of discovery, heedless of any obstacles or objections. Even the religious and cultural strictures of Ustalav only drive Lepidstadt’s experiments with crackling Stasian coils and reanimation of the flesh into hiding.

Invitees across Golarion

In addition to the six schools sponsoring the Convocation, various invitees from all across Golarion are in attendance, from Absalom’s own Dacilane Academy to the Indraracha Institute in Tian Xia’s Tang Mai. Each is ready with their own perspective, as well as an item, spell, or some other piece of knowledge to contribute. One school we’re sure many will recognize is the Sihedron Spires, who bring with them their knowledge of rune magic and the (now fully remastered) runelord archetype!

Meet our Writers!

It was up to the authors of this book to bring these schools and other attendees to life, giving each their own voice and beliefs that you can embody through PCs and NPCs alike. I’d like to thank Sharang Biswas, Jeremy Blum, Carlos Cisco, Aoife Ester, Laura Lynn Horst, Andrew Mullen, Kendra Leigh Speedling, Stephanie Lundeen, Mahpiya, Collette Quach, Mikhail Rekun, Erin Roberts, Navaar Seik-Jackson, Shahreena Shahrani, Gina Susanna, Tan Shao Han, and Esther Wallace.

Developing the Looks

Lastly, an important part of bringing these schools to life was their look. While we had a good number of references for the look of the Magaambya and Lepidstadt, some of our other schools just haven’t had much time in the spotlight (and the Academy of the Reclamation is brand new!), so let me show you a bit of how they look around the Convocation in this concept art from our very own Kent Hamilton.

My favorite part about the Sihedron Spires is that we all know what the most popular technique of rune magic is going to be in New Thassilon. :)

Ahhhh so excited for this, new gadgets! Oath magic! Tan shao han! The magaambya! What more could a girl want

As much as the Return of the Runelord Archetype has me vibrating with excitement, I'm unspeakably fascinated by the Traveling Academy of Cobyslarni. We've had neither hide nor hair from them since Obama was still president.

So with one of those schools having an entire AP dedicated to it will we find out what happens after it's events?

You did a GenCon reveal about a GenCon splatbook lol.

But seriously, very cool way to expand the setting.

I'm so excited about this book! World's Fair meets school competition day <3

The Soccer league is gonna be brutal.
iirc, this should release concurrently with Spore War? Curious if there's going to be a tie in there.
Either way, I'm always down for a little mad science and weird magic!

Personally, I want to see what kinds of magic sports they can come up with. We need more wizards with strong opinions about their local wizard football team.

I think it would be funny to have the Gebbite and Nexxian deligations arguing only to suddenly be united in annoyance as the Lepisdat deligation talks about replicating their feats without magic. And then a deligate from a school in Alkenstar shakes their head knowing, you NEVER piss those two off enough to unite them.

What interests me about the Lepisdat delegation is that they're devising basically Golarion's equivalent of green energy. "Reanimating corpses without employing the Void or damaging the soul! Pure, wholesome electrical magic and mechanical simplicity, and much more renewable without the threat of malicious undead spirits or angry psychopomps!"

I feel like they'll have to be very brand-conscious, especially in Ustalav. Hefty university donations to the Knights of Lastwall and Gravelands evacuation efforts. Then again, Magaambya philanthropists are already involved in the evacuation efforts. Maybe that's why these two academies squabble.

Too bad the Acadamae isn't in :( but super excited for more Lepidstadt options! Hopefully it includes some Sincomakti lore too.

When glancing at the art for a second I thought the rune mage picture had 6 arms and was like woah interesting magic style incoming.

Definitely eager to see the new Stasian technology.

I'm so incredibly ready for more mad science and gadgets!

I'm also really looking forward to hearing more about the Houses of Perfection. I don't know if we've heard anything from them since the Plane of Metal and Plane of Wood popped back into existence.

Deeply excited to get a look at the new Sakorin stuff over the others, but it’s gonna be fun to get a look at all of these academies

I imagine the conversation going along these lines;

Immortal Wizards: Stop stealing our things!
Pathfinders Society: Stop leaving them lying around collecting dust in the middle of nowhere and we'll stop putting them in museums!
IW: That is no excuse for theft and trespassing!?!
PS: If we hadn't stolen them, the Apis Consortium would have just stolen them and sold them for money to the highest bidder.
Apis Consortium: They have a point...

I share your enthusiasm. Lepidstadt has become a region that I'm very interested in. Recently, I've been contemplating creating an Elf Investigator from there.

Big fan of more magical school stuff!

One thing I’d like to see one day if it’s possible would be some mechanics around how to make new spells. That feels like a prime goal for Wizards at the very least, but I could see any spellcaster wanting to do so. It’s certainly a player fantasy, and I’m sure GM’s would like to introduce some new magic into their 2e games too. It’d be great to have some rough outline of how the 4 magic traditions might go about that, and examples of structures for single target, aoe, utility, etc. spells at various levels. I adore the expansive rules framework this system has, and this would be a great piece to have.

On the same note, guides on creating your own wizard schools would be great! I love meta stuff like that.

Very much this. I like to allow my players to create their own wizard schools. But having a more solid guide would be nice. I can't imagine such a guide would require more than 2 pages, 1 page would likely be sufficient.

Don't forget Manaket's Occularium! I think some of Rahadoum's PR problems would be fixed if more wordcount went to their prestigious school for magic and environmentalism.

Wasn't Bofika the Headmistress of Cobyslarni, with Cobyslarni himself just picking the Headmaster? I know Wizard/Occultist was a terrible multiclass but surely old Coby didn't demote her for that lol. I'm curious why he's decided to take on the mantle for himself.

I am pretty excited to learn about the new Sarkorian School of Reclamation though! Sarkoris is one of my favorite parts of Golarion, and I'm still a little frustrated by some of the reveals of Gatewalkers (Changing God-Calling from a clan-specific, almost hereditary practice passed from teacher to apprentice within a clan to a more generic magic school you send your kids to Domora for was kind of a downgrade) so I'm hoping this book'll have some funner explorations of Sarkorian culture.

For example, Threshold's existence is still kind of a plot hole in the story of Sarkoris. God-Callers are revered religious leaders in Sarkoris yet they were being shoved into a magical concentration camp? There's a gap there, and one I think could be very easily filled. Its already well documented that Sarkorian indigenous religions have faced a lot of persecution especially from Mendevians, the 3rd Crusade was largely focused on exterminating anyone who practiced a Sarkorian faith. Its fairly clear that bigotry had already been around, and was only stoked further as Sarkorian faiths were blamed for the emergence of the Worldwound. When I've run Wrath of the Righteous I've had the existence of Threshold and the hatred of arcane casters be a product of Mendev's cultural influence on Sarkorians. It fits pretty well with established lore imo, and mirrors the real world demonization of indigenous faiths by foreign powers to the point that even the originating cultures forsake them leading to the loss of said indigenous faiths (Which also ties into Sarkoris already being a rough analogue to the Irish/Celts, with Mendev possibly standing in for the Anglo Saxons/English).

Anyways, I'm hoping the School of Reclamation really goes into, well, the *Reclamation* of Sarkoris's indigenous faiths (God-Calling, Green Faith/Druidism, and demigods like Pulura) especially since its tied intrinsically to Sarkoris's magical history (Also mirroring how Indigenous cultures in the present day are reclaiming their faiths and practices that colonizers forced them to abandon. Whether the colonizers in this equation be the Demons and/or Mendev).

Sigh. I hoped there would be a school in New Thassilon or Xin-Edasseril in this book.

Is the University of Lepidstadt a magic school? I have always thought it is a normal school, albeit very knowledgeable about the Elder Mythos and undead.

It seems that among the six schools in this book, none are from Absalom, Cheliax, or Varisia. This is quite strange, considering that Cheliax is the most powerful country in the world, and I have always thought that Varisia and Absalom are two centers of attention for Paizo developers. Does this mean that the Arcanamirium, the Egorian Academy of the Magical Arts, the Acadamae, the Order of Cyphers, and the Twilight Academy are not as prestigious as those included in this book? I'm also surprised to learn that there is no magical school in Magnimar at all.

It is confirmed that the remastered runelord archetype will appear in this book. But I heard that the ancient Thassilonian wizards actually didn't use the runelord archetype and they instead used the Thassilonian specialist archetype. Will the Thassilonian specialist archetype appear as well?

Cheliax quite literally pales in comparison to the Empire of Kelesh for one, it's absolutely not the most powerful country in the world. It also doesn't have that many institutions of arcane learning that we know about. They've also mentioned in the blog that over a dozen schools will be in attendance, so there's a good chance for other schools to be playing a more minor role.

I do hope that Cheliax gets some representation amongst the assorted minor schools - my first/favorite PFS character was a Chelaxian demon hunter of the Hellknight (Signifer) variety who spent a large chunk of her career killing demons in the Worldwound during the tie-in season for Wrath of the Righteous, so even if the official position is that Cheliax and the Hellknight orders didn't have much of a presence in the Fifth Crusade, this seems like precisely the kind of event she'd be interested in attending.

Also because this is liable to be the only place we might get some diabolist/devil-binder options, short of a Lost Omens: Old Cheliax or Book of the Damned...

As a representive of the order of the nail, I concur. There is a troubling lack of discipline amongst new recruits and severe punishment can only do so much.

I'm, confused. The only Thassilonian Specialist I can find is from PF1E, and its mechanics were essentially replicated by the Runelord archetype, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by them using one and not the other?

Unless this is some kind of meta joke about the Runelords taking Thassilonian Specialist because they prefer playing 1st Ed? (They probably would; wizards are pretty cracked in PF1E.)

Not explicitly, no, but there IS some precedent of spellcasters having lessons from there, as indicated by the Lepidstadt Shifter arcane exploit for 1e's Arcanist class.

And there's a great deal of implied connections with magic, especially the occult, given the founders of the University, Liron and Cadamon Treyes delved into places like Kalexcourt and the Spiral Cromlech for artifacts which are on display there to this day, and the University's ties to various Counts of Vieland who dabbled in such things, like Altus Anton Canter, who founded the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye, and Alpon Caromarc, creator of the infamous Beast of Lepidstadt (admittedly, we don't really know if channel creations are still magical or if they're now wholly brought to life by electricity as true homages to Frankenstein, so given Caromarc's canon class of Alchemist it's unclear if any actual magic was involved in the Beast's construction).

So while the U of L isn't a MAGIC school in the same way as the Magaambya or Arcanimirium are, where magic is the primary subject of study and the focus of its education, in Ustalav, where magic often gets lumped in with the occult, it's probably the best place WITHIN Ustalav for the magically-inclined to find like-minded people and opportunities, if they don't have the means or inclination to leave the Principality for more magic-friendly nations...

This is something I'm really hoping gets brought up in the book. I'd love feats, archetypes, or rituals more focused on making these sorts of constructs, charnel or otherwise; I've wanted to build golems since PF2E came out and I keep hoping that creation rituals or something will be on the table now that their spell immunity has been toned down.

I know the Clockwork Reanimator already exists, and I'd be perfectly happy if it made it into a mainline book, but I'd be overjoyed if we got some more robust construct crafting options, instead.

I'm also excited to see if we get some clearer terminology for constructs, now that "golem" is out. "Constructs" is pretty good, but a girl needs synonyms, y'know?
