Pathfinder Sundered Waves: Iconic fighter Valeros faces off against a giant skeleton

Today’s debut of Sundered Waves marks the first appearance of a brand new type of Paizo digital adventure--the One-Shot! Written by Paizo’s Director of Game Design, Jason Bulmahn, Sundered Waves features a jaunt through a pirate’s puzzle-filled dungeon, and is the first release in a new downloadable adventure line!

One-Shots provide single-session adventures designed to fill 3–4 hours of game play. Each includes pregenerated characters to make it easy to jump into the action right away. These aren’t just character sheets, though, they’re beautifully illustrated and fully-developed characters with backstories related to the adventure that make for great cooperative storytelling around your gaming table.

Sundered Waves pregenerated characters featuring Lavanna Saltspray, a long hair halfling dressed in blue and white, holding a trident; and Kaako Ashfeather, a tengu sailor dressed for the sea

As we’ve embraced more digital initiatives, we know that the ability to present gaming content in a digital form is an important component to gaming these days, and One-Shots provide what you need to play on virtual tabletops and across other platforms of your choice. To celebrate the launch of the One-Shots line, we’ve also created some wallpaper for your mobile and desktop devices.

The Paizo One-Shots join the rest of our adventuring line-up:

Adventures (Pathfinder | Starfinder): Focused adventures covering several levels and sessions of play.

Adventure Paths (Pathfinder | Starfinder): Multiple volumes of adventure and background content comprising a linked campaign of epic scale.

Bounties: 1-hour-long Pathfinder side treks perfect to add to any campaign (and which work great as a quick demo!).

Scenarios (Pathfinder Society | Starfinder Society): An episodic story shared with thousands of other gamers through Paizo Organized Play.

Pathfinder One-Shot: Sundered Waves is the first of this product line and available for download at the Paizo Store right now! We hope that you’ll join us for this pirate adventure; it’s what our dear, departed Captain Renlock would have wanted!

We’ll follow that up with two more new One-Shot releases at PaizoCon 2021 — one for Pathfinder and one for Starfinder. You’ll hear more details about those in the weeks to come.

And now some Q&A…

Will Paizo One-Shots be available as a subscription or in print? We don’t have any plans to offer these adventures as a subscription or print product.

Will these be available on virtual tabletops? With the high-resolution maps and image handouts included these should be easy to add to your favorite virtual tabletop. Fantasy Grounds plans to have these available today, with other partners working on making these available natively on their platforms. Make sure to check in with your favorite VTT for an update.

Will these One-Shots be sanctioned by Organized Play? Indeed they will be; in fact, you can download the sanctioning documents for Sundered Waves right here! We are adding the May releases to the PaizoCon schedule.

In celebration of this new release, Pathfinder Society Organized Play will be running a special Double Points weekend for Sundered Waves! All sessions of Sundered Waves run this weekend, March 12-14, will earn double the Achievement Points (8 points for players, 16 for GMs). Games must be reported by 9am Pacific on Wednesday, March 17; any games reported after that will not earn double points. Play-by-post games which begin during the weekend will also qualify; those GMs should email organizedplay@paizo.com after their games conclude and are reported to earn the additional rewards.

That's interesting! Will give it a try.

Also finally a cool halfling! Could use an offensive cantrip though.

This is awesome news. I hope there is the possibility of putting this up for Outpost IV right now since many of us are done, or soon will be, with Quests.

On hands and knees, I beg the organizers of Outpost IV to offer this.

Puhleeeze!!!

Wait a sec. 3-4 hours to complete? So should we consider all PFS scenarios "one-shots" now?

I keed! I keed!

We do not think of them that way. They are both similar in length and digital, but One-Shots are not intimately connected to the Society stories, whereas Scenarios are. Make sense?

Clear as an azure sky. Thank you!

Future proofing:

Can we get a blog tag for "One Shots"?

I'd love to be able to go back and find all of them at once after there are a couple years of them.

Sounds reasonable. I'll talk to Tech on Monday. We will make sure they are all easy to find in the store too. :)

Its great that org play is sponsoring a double-points weekend, but a little more notice would have been nice. We have a convention this weekend and those players will not have the opportunity to get the increased rewards since they will have to play this at a future date. A bit of advanced notice we could have included this offering in our schedule.

Thanks for the feedback. Advanced noticed was not possible as this first One-Shot is the unveiling of the new product line. Subsequent One-Shots will be revealed with more lead-time.

I haven't gotten the main pdf yet, but was looking over the pre-gens and it seems to me there is a major bug on the rogues Acrobatics skill. Say's he's trained and only has a +2. Trained 5 Rogue, Dex +4, should be +11 Acrobatics, is there a way to get a clarification if this is a typo?

It should actually be a +12, thanks to the bracelet of dashing. A 1 got dropped somewhere.

That seems right, I didn't get that far in the build, a missing 1 is much easier to typo.

That make more sense. Correct math, but a hidden character. Easy to correct.

Its own logo and all, huh. Pretty neat offering. I like the adding of Pre-mades, though for their combat stats, I'd prefer the MAP notation like "sickle +17 [+13/+9]".

It might be nitpicking, but I’d find the pregenerated character sheets infinitely more usable if they contained quick descriptions of the feats and spells that the given character has. That’s the one thing that stops this from being a true “no-prep” experience for newer players.

Thanks for the feedback. I recommend the Beginner Box for that.

These pregens are more integrated with plot than Slithering's pregens, but I hope that means they are also more mechanically fit for adventure :O

Slithering's pregens were really unequipped for Slithering in so many ways x'D

This is a nice addition, I just wish it was released in both 1st edition and 2nd edition. I feel like there is still a large following of the 1st edition. Just my 2 cents...

How easy is this to adapt for non pre-gen characters? It sounds an ideal drop in for my campaign, but if it's too tied up with the backgrounds of the pre-gen characters, then it might too awkward to fit it in

Are you sure about that? The map on page thirteen is quite low quality in the file I downloaded. To me high resolution means I can display it on my TV at miniature scale and it will still look sharp. This map falls far short of that, unfortunately.

The character art and handouts look great, however.

are they all custom maps? if the low-res one is something available as a FlipMat etc, I'd love to know that.

I'm guessing they missed the folder with all the art assets in it. The map in the PDF is pretty blurry, but that's probably to keep the PDF size down. There's a high quality map in a separate folder which is quite nice.

That ship has sailed. Paizo is 2E Pathfinder now. Any reverse engineering is going to be a community project.

Great idea! Looking forward to checking it out on Foundry VTT.

I see that characters don't need to follow OP rules for OP credit. Do other rules need to be followed for credit (such as table sizes)?

Thank you for taking PbP games into account for the double AcP!

Grand Lodge

Good question. Generally non-PFS specific content usually uses the “campaign” rules so you can do anything you want up to and including running it in a completely different system. I would assume that is the case with this too, but that’s just a guess.

A couple more small issues: Lavanna seems to be missing her domain. I'm giving her the Water Domain (though I could see an argument for Travel as well), but she definitely should have one. And her Perception modifier is right, but she's Expert, not Trained.

Double-points is next weekend March 12-14, so people can have a chance to sign up and play for them. Games must be reported on paizo.com by March 17th to receive the credit.

We've already scheduled games of Sundered Waves, as well as the next Pathfinder One-Shot and the first Starfinder One-Shot for PaizoCon Online - May 28th-31st!

Is it repeatable for society credit?

I do not see a repeatable tag on the sanctioning document, so my guess is no. Tonya and Alex can feel free to correct me if I am mistaken here.

Love this idea. Ironically, this reinforces my desire to see other nomenclature used for all the adventure products for both Pathfinder and Starfinder; which I had been thinking about for the last week.

I'm very here for this though. Small, bite-sized adventures. Been trying to get some coworkers into Pathfinder. Perfect catalyst.

I hope not, but I'm sure there is a good number of Pathfinders who hope it is.

Tonya Woldridge wrote:

By "this" I meant the same weekend as out convention. I know Paizo cannot plan around all the events in the community and I understand Aaron's comment, but it still would have been nice for some more than a week's notice. As we all know, adding slots to an existing con that late in the process can be incredibly challenging.

Explanation of Disappointment, albeit minor:
I am only thinking about the GMs/players in attendance that will miss out on a "bonus" session of elevated AcP. Since they are at the convention, they will be getting the increased AcP already that weekend for their play. So, even if we added Sundered Waves to the schedule, they would not gain anything they aren't already getting. However, when they do get around to playing it, they won't earn the elevated AcP. So, while everyone else has a chance that weekend to earn bonus AcP unassociated with any other event, those in attendance won't. Its a minor complaint to be sure, but had we known about the plan in advance, we likely would not have scheduled our event for the same weekend. In the grand scheme of things, it is not really a good idea to schedule an event to compete with an official Paizo one. You will almost always lose participation to the official event.

But, I have expressed my feelings and can now move forward. It is what it is and it is done. So, thanks for listening (or ignoring) and...

I just noticed the missing domain and focus spell as well. Is there an official ruling on this?

Ah ok so it seems to be this module is made to be played with the pregens and with the pregens only, no self made characters? Because the Pre gen sheet even mentions that you should ad a pregen as an NPC if you play with 3 players
