Dungeon Master

Greetings.

Firstly, I must ask that you DO NOT post in the Gameplay thread until I give permission to do so. Please wait for me to set the scene.

Secondly, check the Campaign Info tab for information on the world your characters live in. The information available is common knowledge for even the lowliest peasant in the realm.

This Discussion thread will be where we talk about questions about the rules, or have a lengthy discussion out-of-character. When you post in Gameplay, I ask that you do so in-character (save for single questions in the [ ooc] blue font).

Let me know if you have any questions.

EXCITE!

Brakton huh. All righty then. :) Loving some of the backstory too. Especially that stand Belarand did on the bridge.

Still lost but I'm leaning towards a half-Orc with a fighter class. Perhaps some multi classing to acquire some cleric skills. Imagined my background to be a hired muscle with some sailing skills working on a privateer ship based out of Port Elam. And maybe I'd have a black parrot who talked more than I did.

Understood.

Oh, guys, this here is just a request, but I've come from another Pathfinder game and it pretty nearly broke up the group.

I know that this is fantasy, but try to strike a good balance between writing/speaking in flavor and using standard english. When you get too weird, it just makes people skip your posts.

Ooo, the only Dwarves in seen Vyren were exiled or the offspring of exiles? I can deal with this.

And I love the map!

Man every time I read the lore I get more excited to begin. Cannot wait!

Also, this might be a good time to get used to posting as your alias. Once we're in game, that's pretty much the only thing we'll post under.

I've already updated my default. :)

Dungeon Master

@Quirel: No problem here. I don't have the time or energy to write in arachaic. Though some unfamiliar terms might arise from time to time, coherency is actually one of my priorities.

@Gwath: Send me a private message with your gmail address so we can quickly hammer out a character for you. Just so you know, I don't anticipate a lot of sea travel in this adventure. Keep a basic idea of what you want to play and we can figure something out.

Since we'll be separating into 2 groups, I'm gonna need a little bit more time to prepare. I'm glad the lore and map have you looking forward to the game -I'm eager to start playing as well.

I finally had time to do a thorough readthrough of the back story and I must say I'm impressed. There's lots of good locations and lots of delicious points of failure that have me coming up with several different good stories. Can't wait to see where this goes. :-)

Levi's in! Yeah!

Also, Nether, how do plan on splitting us up? Split but still within the same universe?

Oooooooh, we could meet each other on the road. Everything would slow down and we'd exchange glances from either side of the road, eyes squinting, knowing.

And then we'd fight. For honor!

Who's gonna fight the tiger, huh? Whosit? Who? Who!? Bringit!

Yeah, that's right.

Test post to see if I've at least figured out how profiles work on this site.

I like Beorae's ideas about an intertwined universe!

And yeah, of course, we'd have to have a crossover battle at some point, beginning with a simple misunderstanding which we would eventual resolve so that we can team up against the Brotherhood of Evil!

Okay, maybe not that last part.

And to answer a question from Ragashingo long ago - yes, I was paid... or at least WILL BE paid on a few. Many of these publishers hire artists as work-for-hire with a clause that we'll be paid within two months after the book's release. And of course, that mean's the very last minute. So I won't see these tiny paychecks for days-worth of work till half a year later sometimes.

You have the right idea, Henry, though I would prefer spoken text in bold, thoughts in italics, and narration with the normal font. And out-of-character speak in blue. Like-a-this:

The grizzled adventuring leader scratches his grey stubble, nodding in concession. "Aye, wizards are the worst," A robed, thinly built man behind the leader pulls his long nose out of a thick tome at the comment, and the weathered adventurer continues, "but we're not after them magical types. Jeromy at the apothecary is offering five hundred gold coins for every troll head we can bring back. Says their brains will knit a halved man back together overnight."

He shrugs and gestures vaguely. "Just got the impression you'd want in ... " He turns to leave.

"And you should know that ‘incineration' is what will keep the troll's impossible healing rate at bay!" the scholar with the narrow frame huffs, his eyes darting from his leader to the shrewd mercenary and back again. The grey-haired adventurer ignores him and ducks out of the tavern, careful to keep the greatsword on his back from catching in the doorway. Henry is left alone with his ale, for the time being.

"Argh, what's up with all this noise?"

Female Half-Elf Druid 6: AC 14 [+2], HP 39/41 | Shark: AC 19, HP 37/44 | 449gp 5cp

Okay, searching for Animal Companion combat guides brings up a lot of confusion about primary/secondary and multi-attack. Shark (big cat) has two normal Attacks (2 claws and a bite) and one Special Attack (rake). According to this table, the normal Attacks are Primary Attacks, and Shark has no Secondary Attack.

So, how's this work in battle? Does Shark get to use two 1d4 claw attacks AND a 1d6 bite per round? Or is it a claw OR bite situation? And how does rake fit in, and do I have to teach Shark how to grapple first, or is it automatic with rake?

And finally, how do the various modifiers work? I see that each HD gets its own Constitution modifier, so Primary attack is +2 (BAB) with damage +1 (Str) and +1 (Con), correct?

Shark attacks a target dummy. What does one round look like?

Half-Orc Sorcerer (Draconic) 3

In a FULL ROUND ACTION, Shark could indeed attack with two claws and a bite. If both claws hit, he gets to rake.

If rake moves, or is somehow unable to take a full action, he can choose either a claw or a bite.

Many big cats have GRAB, this allows a free grapple COMBAT MANUEVER when the bite hits.

Consitution applies to Health per Hit Die. It does not apply to attacks.

I can give you a sample round later this evening if you like :)

Dungeon Master

Multi-attack is a feat every animal companion gets at 9th level. We will open that can of worms later.
Shark can attack with all three (1 bite, 2 claws) weapons as a Full-Round Attack. Full-Round Attacks require that you take no other actions on your turn, save for an optional 5-foot step. If Shark has to move more than 5 feet to be in a position to attack, he can only make one attack (traditionally the bite attack, but it's up to you).
In regards to Rake, the druid entry on animal companions is not thorough. Simply put, Shark gets a Rake attack (effectively, claw attacks) when he starts his turn grappling someone, in addition to the options available to all grapplers. He does not need special training to grapple, it is something that comes naturally to him. However, initiating a grapple will provoke an Attack of Opportunity from his target, just so you are aware.

example:

Shark starts from 80 feet away. He begins with a Charge (a full-round action that allows double move speed and a single attack at +2 to the attack roll. He also takes -2 to AC while charging).

Bite (note the charge bonus) 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 = 11, for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Shark charges the target dummy, and bites down on its cotton-filled neck.
Next turn: since Shark does not need to move to attack, he can make a Full-Round Attack, meaning he can attack with all his natural weapons.
Bite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6, for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5, Claw 1 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, Claw 2 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
He follows it up with another bite while he lashes at the dummy's gut with sharp claws. Next turn: Grapple 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Then he lunges at the shredded dummy, wrapping his muscular legs around the inanimate figure. Next turn: Shark drags his claws through the stuffed cloth as he clings to his prey. Rake: Claw 1 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, Claw 2 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 for 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
The dummy is reduced to shreds of cloth and fluffs of cotton. Shark begins licking himself.

edit: Quick has it right about Hit Dice and Shark gaining the Grab ability at level 7, but I think he might be getting Rake mixed up with Rend. Rake does not grant bonus damage. It grants bonus attacks, only while grappling.

Female Half-Elf Druid 6: AC 14 [+2], HP 39/41 | Shark: AC 19, HP 37/44 | 449gp 5cp

I think I have it, thanks for clarifying, guys. I was in the process of typing up a mock battle but Nether beat me to it! Cool deal with the Charge attack, 80 ft and +2 attack in a round could be handy.

So the act of grappling takes up a full attack round, then? And those to claw attacks in the last round were extra because of the grappling? If the target still had HP, Shark could do two more claws and a bite as another full attack round?

And the Attack of Opportunity comes from someone other than the grappled target, I take it? (The Glossary says grappled creatures cannot make attacks of opportunity). Can Shark use Acrobatics while attempting a grapple to mitigate AoO?

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious; there are a lot of pieces to all of this that I'm trying to become familiar with, and I realized that in battle I'm effectively driving two characters. :)

Yep. Got Rake mixed up with Rend.

I am working off memory here though, since my work blocks all the PF source sites, yet I can access the boards ??

Initiating a grapple is a Standard Action.

Regarding Attacks of Opportunity: attempting to grapple someone (with the improved grapple feat) provokes an AoO (Attack of Opportunity) from the person being grappled.

If the grapple is succesful, the grappled can make make additional AoOs until he/she extricates himself/herself.

Acrobatics can be used to avoid AoOs due to movement, not manuevers.

Great questions btw. I love it when people own the system and really try to figure it out.

Also, if you asked him nicely, Netherfire might "drive" the tiger as an NPC. Technically, that's how animal companions work anyway. :)

Female Half-Elf Druid 6: AC 14 [+2], HP 39/41 | Shark: AC 19, HP 37/44 | 449gp 5cp

Okay, cool. The difference between "movement" and "maneuver" was something I was missing, but that makes sense in relation to AoO. And if the grapple is successful, the grappled target can or cannot make additional AoO's until the grapple is lost. The page specifically says that they can't, but your note above suggests otherwise. Does the page refer to AoO against other creatures than the one doing the grappling?

From the Glossary:

Quote:

Grappled: A grappled creature is restrained by a creature, trap, or effect. Grappled creatures cannot move and take a –4 penalty to Dexterity. A grappled creature takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and combat maneuver checks, except those made to grapple or escape a grapple. In addition, grappled creatures can take no action that requires two hands to perform. A grappled character who attempts to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability must make a concentration check (DC 10 + grappler's CMB + spell level), or lose the spell. Grappled creatures cannot make attacks of opportunity.

A grappled creature cannot use Stealth to hide from the creature grappling it, even if a special ability, such as hide in plain sight, would normally allow it to do so. If a grappled creature becomes invisible, through a spell or other ability, it gains a +2 circumstance bonus on its CMD to avoid being grappled, but receives no other benefit.

Re: driving Shark, I actually don't mind doing it (since Beorae is completely pathetic in armed combat), but if Nether prefers that method, I'm happy to let him. Or maybe we could do a combination of the two (Beorae directs via Handle Animal, Nether does the driving), and outside of encounters I can drive. Either/or. :)

Dungeon Master

Thanks for answering those, Quick.

On grappling: Starting a grapple attempt provokes an AoO from the target. (imagine an opening to strike if someone moves in to bear hug you). Once the grapple attempt succeeds, the target gains the grappled condition (part of that condition means no AoO). The main difference is that you do not have the grappled condition until the attempt succeeds. In one round of combat, the actions would be ordered like this: 1)badguy1 tries to grapple Beorae, 2)Beorae sees an opening and hits badguy1 (AoO), 3)badguy1 bears the blow and maneuvers Beorae into a hold anyway (now Beorae is grappled) 4)badguy2 (standing next to Beorae) decides to drink a healing potion (no AoO from Beorae, even though that would normally provoke if she could make additional AoOs). Make sense?

On Shark: I don't mind if Beorae directs and drives Shark. However, if badguys casts mind-affecting spells on Shark, I will resume control.

I'm still smiling that you have a tiger named Shark :)

Yes, woe to any group that does not have a common letter to bind them!

Henry Southgard places a small wallet in the center of the table and drives a knife through it, pinning it solidly to the wood. A few coins can be heard clinking together.

Nme'an walks in to his favorite establishment after a long day of training. With the weight of his armor far behind, he is once again free to move and stretch, or would be if he muscles didn't hurt so much. He takes a seat at his usual table, the one just inside the door, takes a moment to decide which of his aching legs he wishes to prop up on a second chair, and then orders gives his usual order to one of the attentive waitresses. He surveys the dimly lit room as he waits. Most of the usuals are here, along with the regular accompaniment of new comers. The only one that give him pause is the tough looking man engaged in an odd conversation with one of the local thieves. The conversation is odd because the man just ruined his own wallet by half nailing it to the table with a knife.

Nme'an sighs.

If something starts then by Sarenrae I'll help it stop, he mutters to himself.

Otherwise, he'd just as rather enjoy his supper in peace.
