Ron

You keep your feet, but are knocked off balance, take -1 forward. Conwall strikes down your assailant, and only three remain. what do you do?

Another gambit from Roshan.

As the remaining guards pounce on Roshan, Merrick tackles one and brings it to the ground. The two scuffle on the ground and Merrick yelps in pain before rolling to safety.

Merrick adds 4 armor to Roshan on that hit, reducing his protector stat to 3.

Bloody Conwall, that one counts as mine!

With the room clear, Ron hastens to Belym's makeshift exit. He reaches back with Remorse and launches it at the guard standing over Roshan. At the same time, Larune lets fly another arrow, which glows a faint green. Using adept to increase potency. She will suffer the results of a failed roll.

Honestly, the defend might have been a Hack n Slash if there was only one opponent. Still a failure, but a failure with higher stakes.

Ron

The guard goes down easily enough, and bellow as you ascend the staircase. the beast at the top of the stairs is terrifying, standing almost 10 feet tall, with a massive wingspan, and four arms. 3 of those arms hold brass scimitars that blaze with hellfire, the fourth holds an orb of pure flame. James Jarvis Strong, you have meddled in divine affairs for the last time. do you have any final words? The beast asks before flying at you with the blades. what do you do?

Tom

Already quite accustomed to blows, you shrug this one off like it was nothing. or so you thought. when you call upon your magic, hellfire bursts from your hands. along with the healing you have set the house ablaze, what do you do? Just to be clear, you do get to heal. I'm not in the mood to get another player-skull chandelier just yet

Belym

The elemental and your stone impact hard against the guard, and send him flying. he writhes where he lands. your elemental, now free, seems to zero in on Roshan as a threat (standing over it's owner with swords). what do you do?

Roshan

The Mercinary Ron is employing takes the worst of the blow for you, he seems somewhat injured, but not badly (one little confession should straighten him out). your assailant goes flying, thanks to belym and her stone-beast. a stone beast that seems to have decided you are a threat. what do you do?

Even remorse has trouble getting through these creature's hides, but tom's target now has a nasty wound to contend with. you rush out, and look back to see the greater demon standing upstairs still, watching the wall burn. he conjures another volley of fireballs, you have a moment before they are loosed, what do you do?

Roshan

You may either give a few feet of ground willingly, or hold your ground, but take a point of damage, ignores armour. What do you do?

I have decided to run a game of DW, and was advised that these forums would work well. My idea is that we open in the town of Norwhich, a small market town on a crossroads. it has a nice(ish) inn, and a market, and a mill, along with a few things I haven't decided yet. you guys either live here, or are here for some reason or another

I want to know who you guys/gals/elves are, and what brings you to this town. if there is a large amount of interest, I will probably have the interested parties write sample posts so I can see what ill expect. Any playbook on this list is allowed, and if you want one not on this list, send me a copy, and I'll look into it (and likely say yes, unless it is unreasonable for some reason).

Thank you for any and all interest.

I'm certainly interested. I'll come up with a char concept soon. I also GM a game here and would be happy to answer questions about running DW here.

Color me potentially interested - maybe a Channeler from Grim World.

What are you hoping for as far as posting rate? Is 1/day sufficient?

What level? I am interested in playing...I have a Human Brawler Tank and a Samsaran Seer Oracle Mystery of Time Curse of Tongues...higher level campaign gets the Oracle.

I'm interested as well. I'll look at the list and ponder a character. Here is hoping we all have a good bit of fun :)

A channeler, I've always wanted to see how a player would do that!

and 1/day should be about the speed (I could go up to 2/day if the players wanted, but I know that people often have other stuff going on).

1st level. and I haven't heard of either of those playbooks. could I take a look at them?

As a general note, I remembered a little late about the list. The rainlord in particular is... I don't dislike it nearly as much as the description would indicate, that list was originally meant for people who know me well, and would see that the rant was affectionate ribbing (especially because I knew one player wanted to play the rainlord). sorry if i mislead anyone

I'd be interested. I'd probably play a paladin or fighter. I'm currently in the process of getting a game of my own going, but I've never actually played.

I could be interested. Im currently GMing a DW game on roll20, however havent played a character yet. And I have never actually played a PBP game so I would need a little more info on how it works. If you prefer someone with some experience in PBP games I understand.

I'm interested. I played DW before, though this'll be my first PbP game, if you'll have me.

I'm thinking of playing a Barbarian. Never seen one played before and I might have some interesting ideas to keep him from being just a "smash things till they die" character.

no, no, sounds good. I don't mind a newbie. as best I can tell, it will work like a normal DW game, only slower, more spread out. I describe the situation, and you say how your character reacts. if you trigger a move, we roll some dice

This is my first game too, and a Barbarian sounds great! do it up!

I'd like to play a grim world Battlemaster. Would you be ok with reskinning the Firbolg race as an Owlbear that speaks common? I know that is pretty out there, so I'm also happy with just playing a good ol' human.

That sounds perfect. In that case I would be interested in playing a ranger.

umm... yeah, owlbear, that just... seems like it may complicate things. also, with GW,I don't particularly like the way they did races, it just seemed... not that great. human is great though!

Ron's bones creaked and his knees popped loudly as he climbed to his feet. Another fine morning. He paused to cough fitfully.

He went through the same morning ritual he had been following for over twenty years. Two decades and he still couldn't shake the army life. He polished an old warhammer and checked the straps on a shield that hadn't served its real purpose in years. Satisfied, he looked over an ancient suit of scale mail. When done, he put the weapons and armor on hand-made racks in his back room, and then made a quick breakfast. He ate with efficiency, taking little pleasure in the act, and then made his way to the market.

He unlocked his stall and went about the process of setting up for the day. Each sword and dagger were laid out with precision. Each piece of armor polished and ready for sale. He stood at attention behind the counter, with a stern countenance.

Arms! Arms for sale!

This is MCKhaos' human battlemaster. A veteran commander from a war that most of his neighbors are too young to remember. Retired, he sometimes longs for the exiting days of his youth.

I was supposed to be dead. They were coming; I volunteered to hold the tunnel, while my clan rigged it to collapse. I remember the fighting, a boom, and the roar, then... Waking. Buried. Hearing Them, nearby, digging, clearing the collapse. I panicked, tried to get away, and... Swam through solid rock. The clan-hold was empty, and looked like it had been for days. Alone, I headed for the surface before They broke through...

So, I'm picturing a dwarven Earth channeler. For the moment, "how long ago was that", "how exactly did I survive/gain my powers", and "what's happened since" are all blanks to be filled in as we're figuring out the group (unless you'd like me to come up with something more now).

Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see - I haven't worked out the whole sheet yet, but can if you're ready for that.

"Close the damn door, you're letting the cold in!" someone called from the inn's common room. The locals thought this a chilly morning, if you can believe that. Back home in the Cold Places this would have been the height of summer.

The night before he spoke to these people, ate and drank with them, listened to their stories and songs, and shared his own. They had good stories here, if only because they were different. Back home most tales were about taking what little fertile land was available in the summer from the other clans. As great as that was, one soon discovers that all those tales are pretty much the same. But here they sang of rich treasure, of devious foes, of great flying beasts slain by mighty heroes, and beauty and flowers and love.

And maybe in time they would sing of him. And maybe today will go down as the first verse of his song.

With a smile Rigwald, son of Hurik, skald from the Cold Places, closed the inn's door behind him and stepped into the morning, one step closer to glory.

Rigwald is Maleval's Barbarian. He left his frigid home with a lust for fame and glory.

Steam lifts from the fields outside of Norwhich as the sun begins to rise and Scath makes his way in town.

A huddled mess of hair and fur, a dark brown cape hangs from his back occasionally kicking up dirt as he walks. He takes special measures to duck, hide or cover his face when he see's a guard. This town reeks he thinks, not noticing those on the street clear to the other side as he walks by with the haunch of his morning hunt on one shoulder, himself covered in mess and dirt.

Some meat for the butcher, a few herbs for doc and some cheese for you and we are out of here! he whispers down to the dark grey, one eyed rat perched in his pocket.

Scath Cogar is Mrjpstilts' Human Ranger. Loss of a child and punishment for a crime he did not commit, he now lives in the woods only returning occasionally to supply some friends with meat and herbs and to pick up cheese for his rat Floyd.

Thaddeus strode into town with a gleam in his eye, holy symbol around his neck, and a good bit of steel at his hip.

It was a chilly morning, and the trek to Norwhich had been difficult. The sight of the town's inn was surely a welcome sight, and the light of the early morning sun shone across the finely crafted scales of his armor as he made his way to the common house.

"Could you spare a few coins, friend? My family is sick.", a beggar wheezed from his post near the door. He outstretched his arm from underneath his ragged shawl and opened his palm. "Please, noble sir."

Thaddeus unhooked his coinpurse from his belt and dumped the remaining coins into the pauper's palm. "They're yours. Think of it as a blessing from Mersiel herself. She smiles upon those who help others, and grants them good luck and good fortune. Maybe someday you can pay it forward." With a nod, Thaddeus ventured into the inn, now without any coin, and in search of work in return for a hot meal and a bed.

Thaddeus is Monkeybarsixx's Human Paladin. He is currently on a journey across the lands, in a noble quest to spread the good word of his god and to help the unfortunate.

Okay, these are all great. I'm going to keep this open a few more days (till midnight on Friday, unless there are any that need a little more fleshing out). I am gonna ask a few questions to get a better idea or your characters (honestly, part of it is me just wanting to see more of all these cool characters, because these are all awesome)

Ron

what was your rank in your army days? any notable achievements (besides making it to old age)?

Do you forge the weapons yourself, or get them from a... wholesaler/blacksmith/whatever?

Why Norwhich? family, personal significance, cheap rent, anything?

unnamed Dwarven channeler

What is your name?

What brings you to Norwhich?

wat does it look like when you manifest your powers?

Rigwald

is Norwhich a days stop, a brief stay, a semi-permenent residence?

(I would ask more, but I don't want to rob you of your outsider expirience, and I think I have a good idea of your character)

Scath

Are you exiled? on the run from the law? wanted dead or alive?

what did you do before your exile?

How did you meet Floyd?

Thaddeus

Have you been here before?

are you currently on a quest?

What does your holy symbol look like?

Hey everyone I'm new. I have an idea for a character. hoping to have a good time

Scath

Are you exiled? on the run from the law? wanted dead or alive?

I was arrested for the murder of Duradel Barlow, the man that killed my daughter Brea. A few of the townsfolk stood by my side in protest for the guard to prove my guilt or release me. Within time they let me go but the rumors had already spread their thorny fingers through the town and between the looks I received and the memories of my daughter I sought the solitude of the woods, a life alone with the animals and my thoughts. Until recently, I have begun finding more reasons to venture back into town, to sell of gifts of my hunts, meet with old friends or here the tales of the city. I still worry that one day I will enter the city only to be brought back to the cells awaiting death for a crime I did not commit.

what did you do before your exile?

After my wife passed away during childbirth I was forced into a strong role as a father. I found myself taking odd jobs around town during the colder months, helping repair a roof one day, removing pests from a storeroom the next, it was wonderful to spend so much time at home with my daughter, but, during the warmer months was my favorite time of year. Once all of the wildlife began to arise at the beckon of spring I was ready to hunt, track and lead. My hunting parties would always bag more meat than we could handle, trophies for every wall and stories that would make even the saltiest's of pirate blush. They put food on the table, coin in my pocket and lasting friends for the years. There were always women in town to watch Brea while I was away, and I would make it a habit to cut the trips short if I had been gone for more than a day or so. Sadly if I could give all my stories, trophies and good friends away for just another week with my daughter I would in a heart beat. 14 years was not enough time...... it was never enough time.

How did you meet Floyd?
A jail cell is already a dark place, but when you toss in a man who is already trapped in a prison of guilt and regret.... it can be downright hell. I had lost everything, my daughter, my reputation, my hope. I was ready to just say I was guilty, provide myself to the hangman and just be done with it, until I met Floyd. I had seen him a few times darting in and out of my cell, back and forth into the many cracks on the walls. I thought nothing of it until one night as a guard walked by and I saw a sheen of something gold come from one of the cracks. As I approached Floyd ran out, standing on his hind legs and looking directly in my eyes, I was at first shocked to see this poor creature only had one eye, but he seemed to know something. He looked at me, back at the crack, squeaked and ran in, I heard the scrapping of metal, rocks moving and when he reappeared he was holding something gold in his mouth. Hesitantly I reached out my hand, I knew these creatures were known to carry disease, he approached and dropped the item into my hand and just sat there staring at me as if he knew what I would do next. It couldn't be I thought, a small gold chain with the small golden egg they said I would never see it again I open the egg, hoping, wishing, knowing what was inside. The petal from a Gost Flower, my daughters favorite flower, the gold wedding band my wife once wore, the first tooth Brea had lost and a note.... the note I found she had written to me the night before she died. It's all here My family egg, an item I had worn every day since the passing of my wife until removed by a guard on the way to the cell. I don't know how Floyd knew it was mine, where to find it or how to bring it, but he did, and I swear that night between the tears of joy and sorrow I also saw a rat cry.

I'd heard that two of my kin headed in this direction, but the trail has gone cold, and my funds have run out. I'm trying to make a little coin here while I look for a lead.

DM Volsung wrote:

When I'm in control, like I'm finger-painting a rock into existence. When the stone takes over, shards fly from my fingertips, and the recoil is enough to make standing upright challenging.

I realized that no one is a fighter, so I want to take signature weapon as my other class starting move as per grim world human racial move. So while in my first post I was polishing a war hammer, what I was actually doing was sharpening a old but unblemished spear.

Ron's army was generally organized and equipped like a Greek hoplite phalanx. Spear and shield. Showing exceptional aptitude for command, Ron was promoted to Lokhagos (leader of one hundred). In proper fashion, he led from the front yet survived numerous battles. He was eventually promoted to Polemarchos, a rank roughly equivalent to a modern day brigadier general, responsible for the direct command of an individual army. Despite his rank, Ron demanded to lead from the front lines. Thus, his mere survival is notable.

In the final battle of the war, Ron's general made a huge tactical blunder (in Ron's opinion), leading Ron's army into a hopeless trap. The army fought brilliantly, and lasted far longer than could be reasonably expected. Yet they were ultimately crushed. Ron was captured and ransomed back to his command. Unfortunately, the disastrous battle proved fatal to the war and the remnants of the armies returned home in defeat.

That general was politically connected and contrived to have the blame for the war placed squarely at Ron's feet. He was exiled and roamed the lands, spending much of his time in his cups. He became so enamored with an exotic brand of rum that innkeepers around the lands took to calling him by the name of the liquor. Ron embraced the name, and hasn't used his birth name in longer than he can remember.

His wandering brought him to the small town of Norwhich. He reveled in the anonymity the small town provided, and using connections from his army days, has set up a respectable career as an arms merchant. He doesn't smith, but he knows where to get quality weapons and armor for wholesale prices.

Quote:

I came to Norwich some time ago, with a merchant who paid me to keep him safe on the roads. I did.

It was a trip with no honour or glory to be won. Worst yet, it committed the worst sin a journey could commit - it was boring. The man knew no stories and couldn't sing worth a damn. I declined to go further with him.

If you ask how I think of Norwich, I'll tell you that it isn't home - that's far away. It is another verse in the song of my life, and it will last for as long as it will, and no longer. For now I stay here, doing odd jobs to earn my food and bed. Someday Fate will show me the way and then I will leave until I stop for a time again.

I can't wait to start interacting with your characters.

A pair of questions:

Should I take the Grim World Dwarf racial move (all dwarves will treat me as a trusted ally as long as I treat them so), or come up with an alternative?

Any complaints if I refluff the starting staff as a hammer/maul (same stats)? I'm picturing it as the last bit of gear from my hold that I haven't sold off.

me either! This is gonna be a hard choice.

2. sure, you can even just take a warhammer, it makes sense

"No coin, no food, street rat! Get out!" Two big, burly, hands clutched the young boy by his collar, and suddenly his feet couldn't touch the ground. As soon as he was up, he hit the ground again and found himself in front of the bakery, on his ass. It was a long walk back to his family's farm. It was a chilly evening and hunger clawed at Thaddeus's stomach. He came from a family of poor farmers, and that's what he was destined to be. Or, at least, so he thought, until the Children of Mersiel came to Norwhich. They spoke of great and wonderful works of Mersiel, the Divine Lady. Bringer of peace and good fortune. The Lady of Light. Thaddeus's parents sent him away with the acolytes so he could find a better future and do great things for the world. Thaddeus hasn't been back to Norwhich until now.

Are you currently on a quest?
Thaddeus was trained as a servant of Mersiel. (I'm thinking his order would be similar to the Jedi. They bring peace and justice and help the downtrodden...etc...) He was trained in the ways of a soldier, and in the ways of a priest. Tactics, battle, weaponry, armor, lore, the tenets, reading, writing. Mersiel's servants believe that the body and mind must both be sharp in order to truly serve the Divine Lady. Thaddeus has recently granted his amulet, marking him as an anointed servant of Mersiel. He has now set off on his first pilgrimage. He has set off from his temple and now wanders the land, spreading Mersiel's word and blessing.

What does your holy symbol look like?
The holy symbol of Mersiel is an amulet that is affixed to a chain and worn around the neck. It is a little less than a hand in size and appears as a silver ring, with a triangle in the center. The three points represent the mind, body, and spirit. The blue gem in the center represents the unity of the three. There is some writing on the outer ring that has been etched into the metal. It is written in an older language. It reads, "The mind grants insight into the world. The soul grants compassion to aid others. The body grants the strength to make a difference." Thaddeus's amulet is worn, as it once belonged to another paladin of Mersiel.

actually, I have a question for the group at large. I've had some ideas running through my head (nothing solid yet, but kickers, and a few townspeople). And I want to know the tone we want to set. how dark? are there any limits? (I have a few that I won't cross, but I just like to know if there is anywhere for you guys). and any general tone or themes we want to see?

Also, McKhaos, how do you do character sheets in your campaigns, because I've realized I don't know how those will work.

Still have room for one more? I am new to DW, and also to PBP. But have been really wanting to try both.

In the darkest corner of the inn, sat Aeric. Hidden in his robes, blending with the shadows. Not wanting to draw attention to himself. But watching, listening, observing everything happening in the common room.

Aeric had first learned to harness the power of magic as an apprentice not far from here. His master occupied a small farmhouse and tower a few hours south of Norwhich.

Recently Aeric had learned of his masters passing. And came back to say his final respects. At least thats what he told himself, and any others that would ask. But Aeric had hidden intentions. His master had a great library and a large collection of magical artifacts. Aeric had hoped to obtain some of those items to further his own magic collection. But his hopes were crushed. His masters collection had been taken over by an old rival, another of his masters pupils.

Aeric is Scott B's elven wizard. He would prefer to be alone, but realizes being part of a group will widen his chances of expanding his own powers

I am willing to take 5 players... 6 is where things start to break down. and the current group seems pretty invested already. I'm really sorry, and I will send you a message if someone has to drop out, but for now, I think we have a party.

Aeric nods his head in understanding, orders an ale, and slips back into the shadows.

I'm ok with whatever you guys want to do, as long as I get to smite something. I haven't actually played in a Dungeon World game, but I've played Pathfinder. I'm a big fan of character interaction and roleplaying rather than combat, but from what I've seen from the game, combat is cool too. I like when the world goes beyond being simple shades of black and white, but you're the DM, and like I said, I'm cool with however you want to run it.

This is MCKhaos. I think this alias has my best character sheet. Click on my name to see my profile. I separate out gear/moves/etc as different spoiler tags.

In a gameplay thread anything you put in the "classes/levels" field will display beneath your name. Doesn't show up in this thread though.

Click here to see an example of how it will display.

In the "classes/levels" field I put stat modifiers, HP, armor, basically anything that will help the GM at a glance (or healers ...). I'm also tracking temporary buffs/debilities and anything I don't want to forget.

Scott b, PbP games have high attrition rates. I'm sure you'll have a spot sooner or later.

Alternatively, you are welcome to join my DW game in progress. It's firefly meets the hobbit in a space opera hack of DW.

Here is the gameplay thread. It's been going for a while so many posts ... But you wouldn't need to read all of it. Aeric would be a welcome addition to the Lucky Sixes crew.

I'm playing in an evil campaign in which our bard made dwarf jerky from a captive. So no limits here.

I prefer fantasy games with a growing darkness, but don't really have any specifics about theme or limits about the games I play. I do like changing up some aspects of the "normal fantasy world" like taking the dwarves out of the mountains and elves out of the woods to make them live in floating cities or lava tubes, etc. Basically just changing enough out of the realm of "fantasy world template A" to make the world feel unique but not overly strange or alien.

So, I think we have our party, Would Ron, Thaddeus, Belym, Rigwald, and Scath (yes everyone, I just love these characters too much to kick one out) please join me in the discussion thread Where we will discover how we know eachother, and work out bonds!

Blast! I knew I should've kept checking the recruitment boards.

Anyway, Volsung, I know there's a waiting list to get in this campaign, but I'm just posting to let you know that I'd like to be added to it. I love Dungeon World and I know a fair bit about DMing it on these boards, as I am currently DMing 3 different dungeon world campaigns!

Just let me know if a spot opens up, and I'll make a character then, based on what would fit within the party.

@Mooshy (and anyone else), he's going to be running a second game! Here

MCKhaos on reddit mentioned there might be room for another player in this game. Is that true? I'll play any open class!

there is room, if the others don't mind. All the classes from Vanilla, Inverse world, and Grim world are available (except the battlemaster, ranger, paladin, channeler, rainlord, barbarian, and immolator). do any of them draw your eye?

Can I ask why no Battlemaster? (I promise to play nice. ;-)

it is because we already have a battle master.

Yeah, we have a battlemaster, channeler, ranger, and paladin, and we had a barbarian. and I'm just preemptively banning rainlord and immolator (personal reasons)

Sorry, I didn't see this reply. If it's not too late, I'd love to play a Fighter!

You can take a look at the Conwall alias on my account for his character sheet. I was thinking of making a more swashbuckling, Errol Flynn-esque fighter.

P.S. I'm 100% with you on banning the Immolator. That dude is brooooooken

I DM a bunch but have never had a player choose Immolator. Why is it broken?

The setting things on fire power is sort of balanced with some cray damage potential, but the mind control powers get out of hand fast. It's not as bad as the meddling kid playbook in monster of the week, but it can wreck a game fast.

Fighters are great! if you haven't already, would you quickly skim the play and discussion threads, so you aren't lost when you jump in. also, if you could say, when describing your character, what you are doing in Norwich, that would be helpful.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!
