** shrug ** Guilty as charged... 'cause like, why do something the hard way when you can just use magic tomake short work of every one of life's problems!?take a straightforward, everyday problem and make it into a new and exciting problem!?
Fixed it. For you. Because that's the sort of personal service we offer around here.
I don't know if any of you are into programming/coding, but there's a saying that if you're faced with a problem and you decide to use regular expressions to solve it, you now have two problems. I think magic is similar.
Narièl Laeric |
OK, I know she's like, mega-hawt and all, but the elf-mage doesn't seem to be very good at practical problem-solving. Maybe I'm going to treat her ideas with a bit more scepticism from now on.
Hey hey hey... Nariel may be mega-hawt, but, um... wait, what was I talking about?

Alright, alright! Message received. If we can treat the handle animal skill as untrained, then yeah, that is the better course of action.
I suppose Nariel is like Elle Woods from Legally Blond now; a hot blond, brilliant but full of ditsy ideas that in her case involve magic? Ugh, I guess I can live with that -_-
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Thanks for taking it all in good spirits, guys :-)
I'll get us moving on tomorrow.
Aivar Kurisyl |
Who needs rangers and druids? Handle animal, animal empathy - all that stuff is like, so overrated.
On that note, my apologies if I'm slow and or place somewhat terse posts, but my body isn't liking me at all and I can tell it is putting a number on my mood *and* imagination. It might take a couple of physio visits to get rid of.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Sorry for lack of posts. Fighting off a bug, which leaves me less energy to do fun stuff. I'll have us moving again very soon.
Narièl Laeric |
No worries, and welcome back!

Oh, and happy birthday to us
Thanks for sticking with this for a whole year, and hopefully for more to come!
Wandering GM Wastrel |
I know, not bad, already well into book 2 (although I realise that's snail paced by your campaign standards, Brainiac XD).
Also, the new counters look amazing in the larger scale. Thanks again, Nariel! :)

Some games move faster than others, but as long as everybody is having fun, it doesn't matter how fast or slow things go. :)
Tristan Aislin |
A storm knocked out my power and internet for a few days, so I'm kinda glad I didn't come back to a hundred posts to catch up on (not glad it came at the expense of your health, of course - hope you're back to form!).
Narièl Laeric |

No problem! It was fun putting them together.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Oh Arianna. Today is not a good day for being you. But perhaps better days lie ahead?
Arianna Wending |
Uuuuuugggghhh I knew I should have made alchemist's fire. I knew it, you even hinted there would be more swarms, but I didn't do it for some godforsaken reason.
Narièl Laeric |
Weapon damage (including slam attacks) don't work on most swarms, including this one. Whirlwind attack would probably work?
Ugh, really? Thought we used elemental slam attacks successfully on the spiders? Oh well, c'est la vie I suppose.
We used whirlwind on the last swarm. Didn't we?
We did, but spiders have poor reflex saves and it worked (hence Nariel's Marilyn Monroe moment). Sadly, whirlwind is very likely to fail here, as bats get to make a reflex save at DC14, and if I'm not mistaken, bats have excellent reflex saves.
Well, whirlwind instead then I guess. I dunno, maybe we'll get lucky. The bats have to make two DC 14 saves, the first is to avoid slam damage, the second is a movement restricting save.
I might recommend a full retreat at this point. I don't think we have sufficient means to attack swarms at this point. What we need is the Gust of Wind spell, or a lot of alchemist fire, or some kind of AoE attack that we can just launch into the cave AKA Fireball or something. I can get Gust of Wind in Brevoy, it would work well for this situation.

God no we aren't going back to the city already, it'd take forever and from a roleplay perspective we'll look like idiots. Look, I can make flasks, I have craft alchemy with a fair bonus plus inspiration; if I get aid from somebody, I literally cannot fail the roll to make an acid flask and I've got an 80% chance to succeed for alchemist's fire, make craft checks by the day and I can make a few in a week.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my last post - I didn't mean to suggest we drop everything and head back to Brevoy now, but rather leave the cave unexplored until such a time we can get some proper swarm busting spells together.
That being said, if you and Raquel can cobble together some bat breakers with Sound Burst and some Alchemist Fire, than let's do that. All I'm saying is right here, right now... we're not looking so good XD
I think we should retreat. I'll leave the elemental at the entrance to maybe help protect our retreat? Maybe a web spell too?
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Non weapon damage (fire, cold) works on swarms. Didn't some of you light torches? Real ones, I mean, not Ioun/everburning.
Narièl Laeric |
Okay, well what about a fire elemental attack then? If using a torch as a weapon works, then wouldn't a fire elemental?
Torches are typically treated as an improvised bludgeon weapon (1d3 bludgeon) that deals an additional point of fire damage from my understanding. If only the fire damage works, we'll be fighting these things for a long time with torches.
Narièl Laeric |
Yeah, that makes torches not a great option then. With nausea and frequent damage round after round from bleed, we'd have a hard time using 1 damage torches to take down the swarm I would think...
Is a retreat possible? Sound Burst and Alchemist Fire are the proper tools to deal with a swarm of bats that we have available to us, just not at the present moment.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Yes to the fire elemental.
I'm happy to house rule that torches do d3 fire damage to swarms.
Aivar Kurisyl |
Aivar has a whoopin' two flasks of alchemist fire, but I doubt that's going to cut it 8)
Narièl Laeric |
Okay, if the fire elemental attack is effective, they can inflict 1d4+2 points of fire damage on an attack, plus 1d4 burn damage (again though, reflex save going to the swarms advantage)
I'll summon a fire elemental or two. Nariel will need to step out of the cave and be undisturbed in casting full round action spells. In the meantime, maybe we'll get lucky and whirlwind will succeed on one of the swarms.
Tristan Aislin |
Tristan will continue to flail with his torch (d3 damage now, yay!).
Narièl Laeric |
Just a heads up, I'll be unable to post of starting tomorrow morning until Sunday evening. If another round gets posted before I go, I'll write up Nariel's action, but you can otherwise assume she will be casting Monster Summoning II a second time using her Pearl of Power to summon a Fire Elemental, and instruct the Air Elemental already summoned to attempt the Whirlwind.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Thanks for letting us know. I'll post Nariel's action on that basis if you're not back by then :)
Narièl Laeric |
Just a heads up (again...) I'll be gone tomorrow for a some camping for a few days and won't be able to post until Saturday. If there isn't a chance to post again before then, just bot Nariel. I have posted her next action however.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
I'm all for creative solutions to problems, but a small air elemental has a listed Int of 4. There's only so much you can do with that.
Narièl Laeric |
Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. Elemental summons are also no known for being stealthy in any way. I can blink through and back in a hurry if need be though.
I'm out for the next 24 hours, so let me know what you want to do and either bot me or I'll post tomorrow.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Ok, we have a possible plan if nobody else speaks up.
Also, just a heads up that I am considering (considering) running the Carrion Crown AP converted to PF2e. If that's of interest, let me know.
Narièl Laeric |
I'd certainly be down for that. I'll have to review the new PF2e rules, haven't looked at them all that closely.
Raquel Cailean |
I have family visiting in town this week. I won't be able to post much, if at all, except for in the early mornings until Saturday or Sunday.
Tristan Aislin |
Such nice rolls. I hope these guys aren't immune to literally everything I can do. :D
Wandering GM Wastrel |
I'll assume Sasha also uses this round to get through the wall, soI'm just waiting on Aivar.
Sasha Yezhov |
Right-o. Sorry for dropping off the map.
My partner is going on a honeymoon soon and work has been crazy to make up for the lost time. Should be clear by the end of the week though.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Honeymoon? Bah. How selfish. Don't they know or care you've got gaming to do? What sort of heartless monster are they?
Glad to know you're still with us ;)

Hey Everyone,
Apologies for dropping in like this but Brainiac and Wastrel moan over their dice luck so often I just had to come and see what all the fuss was about.
You guys are brilliant! This is clearly a fantastic game and lots of credit to you all for making it that way! [Most credit to WW I'm afraid, but there's more work coming in from there than I've seen (or done) in almost any game on the forum!] Kudos all round! :)
Raquel Cailean |
Oh, my! Come back to my dressing room and I will give you a private behind the scenes tour... ;)
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Thanks for the kind words, Nik! And yes, Raquel's rolls have been every bit as terrible as she said they were :)
But everyone still lives, despite my best efforts - and their complete lack of preparation.
