About Arianna Wending

Background:

The Wendings have served the Lebeda family for three generations as household servants, humble and content. Arianna has never given anyone any reason to think she may be any different, but in fact she has much greater aspirations. She decided early on that she wanted to set out, but matters were complicated by her family situation.

Arianna's father, Dieter Wending, is Indentured. As a young man he was close to a neighbor girl, Aurelia, who was freeborn. In time, they fell in love, and despite Dieter's status Aurelia still wished to marry him. The Late Lord Lebeda permitted this, even though it meant that all of their children would inherit their freeborn status from their mother. Dieter and Aurelia had four children together, the youngest being Arianna. After Arianna was born, Aurelia became ill and died, leaving Dieter a bitter shell of a man who blamed himself--if he had not given into his selfish desires, then she might have married a freeborn man who could get a better doctor for her.

In time, Dieter remarried with the permission of his lord, on the condition that his bride had to be indentured. His second wife, Sarah, is a somewhat plain but kind woman, a little bit younger than Dieter, and a wonderful mother. They had two children together, twins, a boy named Daniel and a girl named Clara. They are thus Arianna's half-siblings, and they adore her, but there's a major elephant in the room: the twins are indentured, and so will never even have the choice of whether or not to serve House Lebeda.

Arianna loves her little brother and sister dearly, and doesn't want them to be stuck under the thumb of the Lebeda. There are ways for indentured to be freed, but none of them are easy, and none of them can be achieved by a young woman working as a household servant. Arianna believes (hopes) that the expedition into the Stolen Lands is her chance to curry favor with nobles who could petition to free her siblings, or barring that, to get enough gold to buy them out of their indenture.

None of that explains why she so detests House Lebeda and the nobility in general. No, that goes back to when she was a child, when she was playing somewhere she probably shouldn't have been, and saw the Late Lord Lebeda brutalize Arianna's stepmother. Him being noble and her being indentured, he would and never did face any consequences for his actions.

Before leaving, Arianna stole several books of history, herbology, courtesy, and linguistics from Dame Lebeda's personal library.

Description:

Arianna ties her hair up and wears simple travelling clothes. Her clothes have sentiment attached to them: her boots were a gift from her oldest brother and his wife, her gloves were originally her older sister's, and her hair ribbon was given to her by her little siblings. Like her whole family, Arianna has curly red hair.

Arianna's family includes: her father, Dieter Wending, a sullen man who was kind once but lost that spark when his first wife died; her oldest brother Sigmund and his wife, Rocea, who have no children; the second child, Adrian, and his wife with a baby on the way; her older sister, Cecylia, who taught Arianna how to throw a punch; her younger half-siblings, Daniel and Clara; and her stepmother, Sarah. Arianna has never known any mother besides Sarah, and among the children of Dieter Wending, only Sigmund does not call Sarah 'mother', though Sigmund loves her he still remembers his mother.
