Oh ye have so little faith; take a look my dark haired friend! That is an image fit for the king.
Tristan Aislin |
Posted. And no worries on occasionally forgetting the fiddly bits - honestly, I almost feel bad cuz I know they're hard to keep track of. Pathfinder 2.0 is going the way of DnD 5 and toning down some of the math, right? :)
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Raquel, your channelling rolls are statistically improbable - as befits a cleric of the Lucky Drunk :-)
Narièl Laeric |
Hey all, I'll be without internet access for the next day, so I won't be able to post again until tomorrow evening.
With that, here are my intended actions if botting is required:
1) If Nariel is able to summon another earth elemental, she'll set it on black to help out Raquel.
2) Assuming the one that Tristan just skewered is dead, that elemental will be redeployed to also help Raquel. That one can charge for extra effect.
3) Nariel will use her wand of Magic Missile to help out were she can, unless something changes and she needs to go defensive, at which point Mirror Image will be cast.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Thanks for letting me know, Nariel - I know Sasha has issues posting on weekends so I don't expect much to happen before Monday, but I appreciate the heads-up :)

Cayden smiles upon me! I am loved. :)
Tristan Aislin |
Cayden is loving us all through you. Which strikes me as very Raquel-appropriate.

The board is not being cooperative this morning! -_-
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Yeah. Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C is your friend >.<

I usually write my posts in Google Docs. I've lost soooo many posts to this site.

Just waiting on Arianna, Sasha & Tristan
Narièl Laeric |
Is it just me, or are we all rolling terribly this round... nothing even hitting the average!
Wandering GM Wastrel |
No worries, time to see what Arianna and Sasha can do!
Wandering GM Wastrel |
@Arianna: drinking the extract will provoke an AoO, I think? I never quite did get the hang of how alchemy works - you can't 'cast defensively' either if I've understood it properly.
If someone who knows the rules on this (Solicitor?) wants to chip in then feel free
Arianna Wending |
I was under the belief they didn't, since Alchemy is listed as a supernatural ability (Su), but I could be wrong, especially since Alchemy is really several abilities under a single heading & as solicitor said it's explicitly like drinking a potion. I'll accept the judgement if so.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
I think drinking a potion is the best analogy here.
Narièl Laeric |
PS Don't forget to make your own cast defensively rolls in future)
Apologies, my bad! Not sure I'll be bothering with Color Spray much anymore though in any event.
You're now getting to the point where 1st level spells become less and less likely to take effect.
Respectfully, I have to disagree a little bit here; my best spells at this point are only +1 DC more than this, meaning this guy would resist even those spells 50% of the time. My very best spell is Web, and at the cost of a feat it gives only +2 DC more than Color Spray, but it's a reflex save which would probably be even worse for these things (that, and I couldn't anchor it to anything out in the open). Ultimately, the leader has a strong will save, which makes landing anything at all on him tricky.
Truthfully, this is why I'm not a big fan of save or nothing spells in Pathfinder, because they seem to fail just as often as not. In hindsight, I probably should have boosted Nariel's Intelligence to 19 and dropped her dexterity when I initially designed her... the +1 DC she'd have would help a little bit in this regard. C'est la vie. I think my solution in the future will be more summoning; that seems to work out well most of the time.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
That's true about DCs - but there are also HD limits to consider. Both Colour Spray and Tristan's favourite, Cause Fear, have an upper limit that you will soon be reaching in the not-too-distant future.
Aivar Kurisyl |
Some spells simply fizzle out (hue) past level four. Others, like Enlarge and Grease, stay golden till the end of times, but as DC scales with spell level, there's that.
Do you know what spells scale endlessly though? Illusions! This message was not sponsored by #IllusionismIsTheBestSpecialization.
Tristan Aislin |
One would hope that sometimes we'll run into baddies with little buddies that can still be affected by those lower level spells! Cause Fear has put in good service so far, though, even if this last target rejoined the fight in time to cause some trouble.
Aivar Kurisyl |
It all depends on what you fight. Big lumbering brutes tend to be weak to REF saves so Grease will do wonders. It's the darn will save or nothing spells that also check SR that tend to perform badly once you start encountering outsiders, fey and the like. High base saves, high stats, SR ...
Anyway, I think our spell selection is fine and there's no need to worry. Though perhaps Aivar ought to replace Honeyed Tongue with something more applicable for outdoor exploration :')
Wandering GM Wastrel |
At Tristan's explicit request, the next encounter will feature Extra Mooks.
You're welcome.
EDIT: Just waiting on Sasha for this round, I think.
Narièl Laeric |
Extra mooks, good times XD
In general, I'm liking the save or nothing spells less and less. Cause Fear has served us well, but due to some bad luck Color Spray has not... it's suppose to be a crowd control spell, but I'm not sure that it has ever worked if I think back. Plus, any spell that requires Nariel to be up close and personal officially gets the thumbs down from me now and will be avoided like the plague; Nariel is simply too frail to take that kind of risk, plus combat casting is super risky.
So, buffs (i.e Haste, can't wait) and summons (Lantern Archons FTW) will be my route for future spell selection moving forward. Crowd control spells like Black Tentacles (which is a fantastic crowd control spell) and multiple target debuff spells like Slow will be part of the mix as well. Spells that rely to heavily on saves and SR to fail in order to have any effect, those must be second tier.
On that note Wastrel, I was wondering if you would permit Nariel to take the Academae Graduate feat in the future? It allows a standard action cast of a summon spell at the risk of getting fatigued with a fort save. Truthfully, I'd only use it in a pinch, because Nariel is very likely to fail given her poor fort save (probably 75-80% of the time in fact). If not, no worries.
Tristan Aislin |
I'm looking forward to whipping out my new Allegro spell in a sec. Probably should have done it first-thing, but I'll ascribe it to grogginess on Tristan's part.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
I'll update this evening, if Sasha hasn't posted by then she can post 2 actions next round.
Tristan Aislin |
I'm looking forward to Tristan whipping it out as well. ;)
Didn't the party all go skinny dipping only a couple "months" ago? Ain't nothing left up to the imagination anymore.
Narièl Laeric |
Sadly Raquel, Lake Silverstep which we just explored was a far too cold for a repeat performance of our party skinny dipping escapades... it would be enjoyable for precisely nobody XD
On other business, I'll be out of town from Friday evening until Sunday. If the next combat post goes up tonight, I'll get one more post in, but you bot Nariel if things are moving nicely before Sunday evening.
Raquel Cailean |

I can prepare endure elements four times per day. Just saying. :)
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Uh, FTR Endure Elements is a 1st level spell that protects you from extremes of climate, not from the extremes of stupidity that would be required to remove all of your clothing and jump into water that is a shade above zero degrees.
Just saying.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Sasha - you can post last round's action and this round's action together.

Resist energy (cold) it is, then! )
Wandering GM Wastrel |
That works - just don't be in the water when it wears off :D
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Yes, yes, remove all that nasty armour and weapons - come on in, the water's lovely...
Narièl Laeric |
Ooo, ominous music... don't like the sounds of that (or rather I do like the sound, just not the implication)
Narièl Laeric |
Looks like we won't get another round in before I depart. Assume that I won't be able to post until Sunday evening if you want to keep things moving, and feel free to roll for Nariel.
She'll just continue doing what she has been the last few rounds which is support via the earth elementals, and she has two uses left in her Magic Missile Wand.
Wandering GM Wastrel |
No problems, the combat is over now anyway :)
Have fun on your travels!
Wandering GM Wastrel |
Glancing over her shoulder, Nariel looked towards the horses with an empathetic look "Oh, our poor horses, they are frightened half to death. It breaks my heart." Looking over at Tristan anxiously, Nariel adds "Tristan, this is perhaps a little unorthodox, but maybe we should put them to sleep momentarily... it might help to calm their nerves."
Sleep spell? Just a thought, unless somebody has a good handle animal score?
Uh huh. Cos nothing says "concern" like forcing them to make a Will save, right? I mean, why put points in Handle Animal or Basic Empathy when you have magic to solve your problems?
Elves.
Raquel Cailean |
I was thinking about casting calm emotions until I realized I didn't prepare it today. :P
Narièl Laeric |

** shrug ** Guilty as charged... 'cause like, why do something the hard way when you can just use magic to make short work of every one of life's problems!?
Seriously though, it's the only thing I could think of... I don't think any of us has a particularly strong handle animal skill. Calm emotions would've been perfect, but that's one of those spells that is somewhat situational and often left off the memorization list.
Tristan Aislin |
Le shrug. We come from authoritarian patriarchal societies where 'It's for your own good,' is probably a common explanation.
