It's a bit of a borderline case, I guess. In 2012, Steve Miller submitted a wagon and made it to the top 32.
A risky choice for sure, but sometimes its worth the risk. Sometimes.
EDIT: Oh oh oh, I'm quite sure there was also a submersible in the top 32 many years ago.

The Apparatus of Kwalish was an Artifact in 3.5. Artifact level items are NOT a good idea for this competition.
However, if your looking for an Item Example: I would state the Feather-Tokens are a good example. Feather-Token Tree summons a single tree.
However, I may be drawing parallels only I can see. Sometimes I do that, and it really hurts my chances when my scope isn't grounded.
My unwarranted Advice: Send this item you just thought of to someone, and the item you originally were going to submit.
Look at the feedback you get from both items. If you still feel strongly about your item: submit it.
However, at this point your item MAY be Disqualified because if your item is the ONLY apparatus; it's pretty easy to identify that it was you. Which would be a dang shame considering you just wanted clarification. Just want to see you do as well as you can. Last year, it seems there is someone DQ'd for nearly revealing the item they are talking about, OR the item the item they submitted on the forums.

Suggestion for future contestants:
If you have a very specific question like this about an item you want to submit, have one of your friends post the question on your behalf (or just say that you're asking on behalf of some unspecified person you know so no one knows for sure who submitted your item if they see it).
Of course, the OP might decide to submit something entirely different, and if we do see an apparatus when voting, it might be one inspired by the OP's question, not one submitted by the OP...

Alright everyone, I need to ask you to step away from your apparatuses. I am seizing them under reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. Since I have no idea what any of these newfangled apparatuses are supposed to do, one of you shall spend any standard actions until I have collected all of these apparatuses and stowed them lawfully away.

The voices in your head feeling chatty today, Dieben?
I submitted my item and I'm feeling anxious, trying to let loose a little in an area that it seems to be okay to do so, within reason. This also presents an opportunity to interact more with other entrants in a casual, lighthearted manner.

Filigree, step aside. There's a new meme in town.
But, but, but, wasn't it Torcs last year ? :P
Heh heh, I see I'm not the only one reliving the torc-ing nightmare...

OK, so if I'm reading this thread right:
We need a twerking apparatus of torc torqueing covered in runes constructed of decorative filigree which adjusts any torqued torc to cause the wearer to vomit gore.
Is that about right?

I think causing the wearer to bleed infected blood and giving the wearer an explosive diarrhea attack that makes any creature within 30 feet nauseous and the target themselves vomit, is better than the wearer just vomiting gore.

Have the vomit give off a smokey/whispy dark aura that looks like shadows, but totally isn't. Also, let it glow ominously.

Don't forget it needs to have some really bad effect that makes the wearer wonder why they took the item in the first place, like..."if the rune-filigreed twerking torc-torquing apparatus of death runs out of charges while you are wearing it, you must eat your face as an immediate action, causing 6 Charisma drain."

Figurine of Wondrous Power: bovine apparatus
Aura strong illusion and transmustion; CL 1Zth
Slot none; Price 560 gp; Weight 1 em-dash
Description
This figurine appears to be a miniature statuette carved of inky blackness and billowing cloaks an inch or so high. When the figurine is tossed down and the correct command word spoken ("MooOOoo"), it becomes a living creature of normal size. The creature obeys and serves its owner. Unless stated otherwise, the creature understands Common but does not speak. It is really bad at spelling too, but does ok with grammar.
Bovine apparatus: When animated, a bovine apparatus acts in all ways like normal longhorn cattle except its horns are actually earthbreakers. The item can be used twice per week to ring a filigreed bell hanging from the torque on the cow's gear-laden & blind-folded head. Ringing the bell cuts a hole in space from which the rest of its herd appears. All areas the herd moves through become difficult terrain. When 6 hours have passed or when the command word is spoken, the bovine once again becomes a tiny statuette.
Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, animate object, move earth, Cost 2550 sp
OK. I have now created 10 magic items in the last 7 days. While this is not the worst, it still beats most of them.

Regrettably, Curaigh, your item apparently uses the proper construction feat. I am sorry to tell you that it cannot enter the Utterly Wrong In All Ways Item contest :-(
Keep at it though. Who knows, maybe next year (or sometimes earlier, who knows these days) you might be the one to check all the wrong boxes ;-)
