Get ready to shine your badge and report for duty—the Agents of Edgewatch Adventure Path begins! In this thrilling new Pathfinder campaign, players assume the role of fresh recruits of the Edgewatch, the newest division of Absalom's city watch. Tasked with fighting crime during this year's Radiant Festival—a grand centennial gathering of exhibitors and wonders from around the world that this year celebrates the grand reopening of Absalom's treacherous Precipice Quarter, long a ruined haven of monsters and criminals. Soon after taking on the new beat, the detectives learn that the fair has attracted not only cutpurses and vandals, but also poisoners, ransomers, and even a sadistic serial murderer, and it's up to the Agents of Edgewatch to crack the case and bring these villains to justice!

“Devil at the Dreaming Palace,” by fan-favorite author James L. Sutter, is a Pathfinder adventure for four 1st-level characters. The adventure kicks off the Agents of Edgewatch Adventure Path, in which the heroes join the city watch to solve a series of crimes across Absalom, the City of Lost Omens, before the crooks can pull off the ultimate heist! This volume also includes an in-depth gazetteer of Absalom's Radiant Festival, thematically appropriate new monsters, and new rules designed to support the Agents of Edgewatch campaign!

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world's oldest fantasy RPG.

Good start to a fine AP.

4/5

This is a well-written first book to get the players and characters interested in the promised themes of the adventure.

Our player group all really enjoyed the Dreaming Palace and the House of Planes which we made the most of. The name-dropping for later is also a nice addition.

Unfortunately, the Adventure Path starts going down hill in the later books which makes starting this as a long-term game not as attractive a recommendation as a GM or player.

Odd start, strong finish, needs content warnings

3/5

This book, and the AP itself, deal with some pretty disturbing content so it's not recommended for all ages, or for anyone who is sensitive to this kind of content.

That being said, the Dreaming Palace is an exceptionally interesting locale as the end of this book. Getting there is a bit odd though, first working as beat cops to deal with some minor disturbances, and then breaking a violent(?) labor strike. This latter part rubs me the wrong way since the assumption is that the players will put the strike down violently and some key NPCs are explicitly noted as being unwilling to explain their points, negotiate, or even talk at all. I recommend updating a lot of this section - sure, hotheads with a predilection for violence exist so having some NPCs that are 100% raging against The Man are fine, but I definitely feel like players should have more options and autonomy in resolving the situation than simply bashing everyone in the head.

Very good start, a bit boring in the middle, very good ending again

4/5

Agents of Edgewatch is a police adventure. This should be clear to the group before putting out feelers here. And I just think the first book has everything that is needed in a good police adventure path. It begins with harmless little trifles that need to be cleared up. And more and more pieces of the puzzle come to light, culminating in a really blatant killer in the end.
Yes, it will be brutal. And yes, one is not always on a flower meadow to see the sun smiling. But that's exactly what I expect for my part from this adventure path.
I think he's doing everything right. The middle section, however, is a bit boring. But really great beginning and end. And there's a lot to explore, lots of roleplay and interesting combat. All in all solid.

5/5

Gross murder porn stuff

1/5

I wrote a long review and the website strangely didn't save it.

Murder porn, police brutality, zombie babies, sex club. 0 warnings on the cover.

0 stars.

American college students can't do that because we pretty much have a universal drinking age of 21, and bars and night clubs check everyone's IDs -- so usually the oldest seniors go out to buy kegs of beer and bring them back to the dorms.

We also did that at my college back around 1980, but even though the drinking age for beer and wine was only 18 back then, we were in a state where selling alcoholic drinks by the individual drink was illegal. The only advantage we had over the current day was that anyone but the youngest freshmen could buy the kegs.

Wait, so you couldnt buy a beer, but could buy a 6-pack?

Yep, to discourage drinking and driving/in public.

As soon I heard about this I was super excited. Urban adventures and police procedurals are right up there in my warm fuzzy's list.

Might have to import some Royal Homeland Constabulary folks from Zeitgeist for this!

I mean, 2020 is cursed in that sense. The Paizo had planned for second season of 2e PFS to be about plague spreading through PFS and inner sea from Iobaria :p And Slithering was originally worded more like a contagion than curse

Depends on how much of this AP has Edgewatch being the good guys, and how much is about rooting out corruption and stuff. I mean, I expect it has a lot more to do with investigation and infiltrating cultist lairs and stuff, but I guess how presciently it handles some of these issues might be a thing.

Erik Mona said that the situation with Agents of Edgewatch will be addressed in a blog post in the coming days.

In a city like Absalom which has withstood multiple sieges, houses some of the most powerful non-good organisations in the world (e.g. the decemvirate) and literally has a god-making device in its cathedral? Fireballs are just a start of what guards should have access to.

I think the idea is that fireballs kill indiscriminately, which is the last thing law enforcement should do.

We do know that at one point in the AP the PCs will be betrayed by corrupt members of the guard who are in the pockets of some highly-placed 1-percenter types.

Even if Paizo handles the subject matter with care, there are going to be arguments and complaints. I know they put a lot of work into it and depending on how quickly they could grind the machines of production, it might be a good idea to shelf this AP for a cycle or two and advance the next 1-2 APs in its place. The biggest issue is probably the printers and their deadline to printing something that would be available as a replacement. There probably isn’t enough time to make that happen.

Even if that were possible, and I basically guarantee it isn't, I don't think that's actually the best response. From a risk-averse, PR-focused perspective it might be, but the plan should not be to just wait until "all this blows over and things go back to normal." No one, including Paizo, should want things to go back to normal. Agents of Edgewatch can be one catalyst for talking about these issues now, in the moment, and I for one am ready to have that conversation.

I can't wait for Agents of Edgewatch!

No, I don't plan on comparing it to current events, as Agents of Edgewatch was created months ago, probably even before the pandemic.

APs have a long lead time. For instance, I turned in the manuscript for book six last July.

Like every adventure I get to play, I look forward to playing a hero in a world of violence. It would not be the first time I've seen players deliberately issuing non lethal damage because, "If we kill them they cannot learn the error of their wrongs."

I'm really looking forward to running or playing this AP. Paizo, please dont bow to public pressure and cancel this. Stand up for the ideal of pushing back on social misconceptions. For any who would say that all law enforcement officers are evil, I ask, how many do you know?

Give us the chance to play the good guys, and show others that its possible.

For what it's worth, there's little to no public pressure to cancel this. In fact, I haven't seen a single call for it on here or reddit--maybe somewhere else has different opinions.

The bulk of folks trust Paizo, as being a thoughtful and very inclusive creator community, to not throw something really tasteless out there (though obviously this was written over a year ago, so it doesn't really have the current situation in the US to reflect on).

I would be so angry if this got cancelled.

I really don't like the cover layout:
That smug (to me unsympathic) looking guy in the forefront and the way too thick upper & lower edge take away too much from the great looking action art piece with Lem & Sajan (which i can only guess) fighting a cockatrice!

I have an unpopular suggestion:

Loose the NPCs in the forefront and print the cover art full-page without the edges.
The "Pathfinder" and "second edition" logos at the top can stay exactly like they are without the green bar under it taking up so much Space.
The "Agents of Edgewatch" logo can move to the lower left edge and the title of the volume with writer's name needs to be reduced in size and moved to the far right corner.

A large cover illustration is much more impressive, if i compare this to the new D&D 5e adventures, Pathfinder has better art, but D&D has a far superior layout.

DnD's Adventures have very subdued or focused layouts for their covers.

For Pathfinder APs if you removed the front character, who is tied to the AP, the action scene in the background is just too messy for a cover and it wouldn't highlight and direct anyone's attention the way the title and character front and center do.

Absolutely do not need to reduce the title or author's name.

Absolutely not. Next to the title of the book, the most prominent text should be the author, IMO. The author of any creative project should always be a prominently featured aspect of the publication. Art is in the eye of the beholder so we can certainly discuss what we’d like to see changed, but there should never be a compromise made on the acknowledgement of the writer. If there was space, I’d like to see the rest of the team who worked on the book be more prominent, but due to the nature of Paizo and how many people put there hands on a project, the title page is probably the best way to acknowledge all those contributors.

I wouldn't hold it against them either but I do trust Paizo and the authors they employ to deliver a sensitive product that takes account of real world issues as best it can in a fictional fantasy setting. I would also have serious concerns about the financial impact on the company of cancelling / postponing six months of the flagship line so early in the 2E product cycle and in what are already challenging economic times.

I hope this AP is successful and that, where there are issues, they can be addressed by GMs at their tables.

Oh interesting. Wasn't expecting a cover change this close to release. Are the others getting new covers as well? Admittedly I'll be kind of sad to see the cover to the second book change, with how awesomely gruesome it is. Though it does certainly evoke a certain "OhGod, things are going to escalate QUICK in book 2" feeling, lol.
