Everyone Loves a Party

As Taldor's entire capital city gathers to celebrate, few realize that conspiracy and royal rivalries are about to shake the empire to its core! When a high-minded cabal of senators and nobles tries to steer the nation away from disaster, Emperor Stavian III orders a bloodbath in the senate halls, trapping neophyte spies inside layer upon layer of magical security. As tensions rise and the emperor falls, can the heroes escape the forgotten halls beneath the senate and save the heir to Taldor from an assassin's blade? And even then, can anyone prevent a civil war that will tear one of the Inner Sea's oldest nations apart at its rotting seams?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path launches the War for the Crown Adventure Path and includes:

  • "Crownfall," a Pathfinder adventure for 1st-level characters, by Thurston Hillman.
  • A gazetteer of Oppara, crown jewel of Taldor and center of Inner Sea culture, by Eleanor Ferron.
  • A closer look at some of the primary movers and shakers within the Taldan senate, who make for ideal allies, patrons, or rivals to politically minded players, by Thurston Hillman.
  • A collection of some of Taldor's most exotic and unusual threats, from the unsettlingly doll-like fantionette to the freewheeling onyvolan, by Thurston Hillman and Adrian Ng.

IBSN-13: 978-1-64078-015-6

"Crownfall" is sanctioned for use in Pathfinder Society Organized Play. The rules for running this Adventure Path and Chronicle sheet are available as a free download (922 kb zip/PDF).

Princess Highground

2/5

Crystal Frasier unfortunately made such a caricature stand-in for her own opinions out of Eutropia Stavian that my group still refers to her as "Princess Highground". God bless the authors that tried to salvage this, but the developer kept trying to smother them.

There are also some odd anachronistic elements in the writing that jumped out at me. "Peace-bonding" weapons in the Senate. Service animals allowed....an editor probably should have caught these.

Excellent and Prescient

5/5

A great mix of intrigue, role playing and combat, and scarily prescient. Tremendous job everyone!

5/5

As a player I had a blast when my GM dropped us into the intrigue from this AP. Another great political scenario from paizo.

My players too. I'm getting daily questions about 'what should I play?' or 'should I play this instead?' or 'here's my 3rd character concept'.

Please Paizo. Put an end to our GM misery! :P

Tell them they can play anything ... well, maybe except for staunch Taldan conservatives who want to preserve the old order OR some CN revolutionaries who just want to watch Taldor burn.

The only defining question for PCs in this campaign seems to be "will my PC be willing, for whatever motivations, to ally with Power Bubblegum Prin... I mean, Princess Pea...what I really mean is, with Princess Eutropia and help her reform Taldor?".

If the answer is "yes", then you're fine.

It's pretty much the same situation as with Hell's Rebels, where the Big Q was "Am I on board with liberating Kintargo?".

Yeah if your players don't want to do that, this is not the AP for them.

Admitadly am rather curious if the guide will accomidate players wanting to run as nobles or actual senate members.

While watching the know direction podcast last night Crystal said the guide was in editing currently. so next week at the earliest or the week of the release. most likely.

Senator is a big ask for 1st level option (although I can see that towards book 5 or 6); however it would indeed be cool if the guide provides noble scion adaptations like the Hell's Rebels guide did!

All I care about is much intrigue I can layer onto this before my players ask "Why can't we kill him??"

Unless players want to skip all roleplaying as fast as possible, its completely possible to play first session of this AP without any combat :P

And even then, the dungeon in the book is puzzle/escape door dungeon and contains non hostile npcs

Including:
a kobold shopkeeper :D

I'm just gonna say it now: If your regular party is composed of Murder Hoboes, you don't want to run this ap for them based on first book xD

I personally find it hilarious because it sounds similar to my Kingmaker GM's Kobold PC's name in another campaign that I'm not part of :D

Any mention of campaign traits (stuff like references to "[...] characters with the ____ trait")?

Yeah, the intro session has several intrigue missions each pc is given with (*insert recommended trait here*) type format.

OMG I love this.

All of it. I haven’t been this excited for an AP in awhile (looking forward to definitely, but not this excited), it looks like it’s gonna be up there with Reign of Winter for me!

Just f#~~ wow, especially the spoilerly “What cannot be said will be wept” at the end. Just... wow.

Rubbing my chin over whether to pick this up or not.

Can anyone say some more about it? Super social, okay. What can you say otherwise? What was awesome, what was less good? What kinds of GMs / parties are likely to like this?

Doug M.

I shall not spoil anything. If you like Taldor, it's a must. If you're gonna adapt it to your homeworld, not so sure, but could fit Cormyr perfectly, for instance.

I don't mind spoilers; I'd be GMing. Stick 'em under a spoiler tag. I'm just wondering if I want to drop twenty-some bucks on this, is all.

I'll do up a review this week for in depth coverage, but as an overview:

PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE PLAYING AND NOT GMING THIS AP. I'VE WRITTEN IT SO IT WON'T HELP YOU SUCCEED AT ALL AND WILL KILL A LOT OF THE SURPRISE AND ENJOYMENT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Mood/Events of First Adventure:
Game of Thrones with the Red Wedding up front. After politicking to get primogeniture repealed (heavy RP use with one combat possible which can be avoided with difficulty using social skills), there is a wholesale slaughter of the Senate.

The party escapes via plot device (this is done well as it was forgotten magic and feels like something that would happen in a multi-millennia old empire) and end up in a puzzle trap they have to get out of before trying to get back to the Senate. The party then has the opportunity to rescue others whisked away by the forgotten magic and battle various threats to get out of the dungeon. Could get help from an unusual merchant on the way.

Dealing with the damage of the night before, the party then has to mount a rescue mission to get their patron back. This will be easier or harder depending on whether they gain assistance from the politicking they did at the beginning.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback thus far! I admit, this was such a daunting thing to work on, and was my first time doing an introductory AP adventure. I'd worked on Ire of the Storm as a 1st level module (also helped out immensely by Crystal) but doing an AP opener is very much a beast of its own.

As for the critters, I was responsible for the following:

Thursty Monsters:
-Fantionette: This came from Crystal demanding I include "evil puppets" when I started putting together the idea for Wyssilka. Seriously, Thamir Gixx is just such a fun deity to write about!

Gishvit: The original outline called for "animated object books" based on the cover art. Then at the 11th hour, Crystal and I saw the cover art sketch come in for the adventure... Crystal requested that the book-monsters become their own creature and I eagerly obliged. Seriously, that final art is GORGEOUS!

Walcofinde: I SWEAR, I looked all over for immured dead (originally done by Mikko, IIRC and somehow missed their inclusion in Daughters of Fury. That being said, the final result for Walcofindes really made them unique in terms of the whole "walled in dead" that works well with decadent Taldan nobility.

Are orders still being processed for today? I received my notice over a week ago and haven't seen anything since. With the holiday I wasn't sure if they were still being processed or not.

Shipping is presently expected to continue through Friday the 23rd. As to whether or not they're shipping today, I'm not sure. Normally, they put up an announcement if Paizo is closed for a holiday; I don't know if they're working President's Day or if they just forgot to put up the announcement.

Do believe you are correct.

Which is a shame considering I was looking forward to role playing one for the first time this AP.

More than a little aggravating, considering it seems the perfect AP for Heroes of the High Court.

Actually, the description of the PCs in the module specifically states the PCs may be "minor nobles". They can't be members of the senate as written, but a tweak at the beginning dealing with the party's entry into the senate would be all that is required for a PC to become a newly made senator, ready for their first "kick at the can." Agreeing to work with Lady Martella Lotheed so she can help them get oriented with their new position would be all the explanation for what is going on in the intro, and would actually make some of the potential argument influences make more sense. Wouldn't be an issue at all, from what I can see.

Oh and as for Heroes of the High Court: This campaign is practically made for that supplement. Everything in there can work well with a party of agents of the (potential) monarch!

Sir Nicholas Merrosett [LN, Human , Arcane Sorcerer]

For the most part the idea seemed pretty interesting character to me of a bored High Born 'wizard'-knight that hasn't been allowed to quest yet and is looking very much towards his first grand quest, with perhaps too much innocent naivety.

But I am being told this character might not sit well with other players characters and NPC's, so might need to re-think the character.

Silver Crusade

I'm not sure why that concept wouldn't sit well with any other characters, especially being the most bare bones of a concept.

Me either, but it's also not my wife (The GM for this AP) that is telling me this, but other players as this would only be her second AP she has run, not really wanting to ruin things for her either with the rest of the group.

She herself however has mentioned that it might be more difficult for me to fit into the adventure as is, and I'd have to agree with what I've read. sadly for the group I tend to be a take it or leave it type and instead of adjusting the character I generally just run something different.

heh, I generally have about 5 bare bone character creations done.
(Attribute rolls, Racial choice, Class Choice, Traits choices, and skills & Feats I'd like to have, sometimes by levels, but not always. Don't generally do the full character builds until everyone's decided. [IE/ Math character out]) This time I only put together 1 since we are still working on her first AP Reign of Winter book 3.

Bit behind since we don't have a concrete Player's Guide for the AP yet.

where is the player guide ?
