I think the theme of the Thaumaturge is cool, but it fell really flat in play (and I played at levels 1, 12, and 13). Hopefully these changes make it feel more fun.

I do hope that the 1e Occultist gets revisited in 2e. It was my favorite 1e class and the Thaumaturge had pretty much none of what I liked about it.

I personally would be fine with that (it seems pretty clearly in line with both RAW and RAI) as a PFS GM so without an OPF ruling I would expect table variation and thus recommend against it. Table variation is the devil IMO.

I am also keeping an eye on it as I want my chronicle as well.

I think there are a few 1e adventures set in Isger as well. Pathfinder wiki has a list. At the time of this posting that list shows:

Doom Comes to Dustpawn
Falcon's Descent
The Fall of Plaguestone
Fallen Family, Broken Name
Gallows of Madness
The Goblinblood Dead
Hellknight Hill (adventure)
Scourge of the Godclaw
Trailblazer's Bounty

Some of these are higher level adventurers and not a good fit, but it's worth checking out the ones on the list. Converting a scenario to 2e is not that hard, especially if you just reuse the plot and stick to monsters from the bestiaries and NPCs you can reskin from the GMG

My favorite discord lodge is Find the Path, but I am a member of all of them.

I second the advice about muting servers, but you can actually be more selective about how you do it.

For some servers I have the whole server muted, full stop--no mentions, nothing.

For other servers, I disable desktop and mobile notifications and then mute the categories and channels I don't care about: this way I can still use the "unread messages" inbox in discord (one of my favorite features of the desktop app that I dearly wish they would add to mobile) to browse new messages in those channels without automatically marking them as read. That way I also get the little red notification dot in my system tray for discord, and I can see there are new messages I care about in that server when I'm browsing servers in discord.

For the servers that are most important to me (pretty much just my own server where I'm running or playing in games with friends) I allow desktop and mobile notifications (though I often mute the mobile notifications from my phone).

Most servers have a bunch of "non-Pathfinder chat" channels, and side from a few on Find the Path, I always mute those. I mute some game system chat channels too if they're too chatty for me, ha ha.

--

Regarding the different servers

OPO is awesome for getting answers (esp. official answers) to your PFS questions. There are a lot of really active chat channels there as well. I keep this whole server muted all the time.

Roll for Combat is quieter and more PbP oriented. At the moment, by default, you have to manually mute every single table you're not in, which I find inconvenient, but the new VC there (congrats again Bigrin!) is working on improvements there, piece by piece. I think I'll be in a GameDay X game here.

Cosmic Crittermanders is a very SFS oriented server. It is quiet and well organized enough but doesn't feature the second most important play by post discord quality-of-life feature after a dice bot: the "tupperbot" that lets you use an alias to post as your character instead of yourself.

Cayden's Keg is very friendly, and is mostly oriented around VTT games. They do run the occasional PbD game, and I'm in an Age of Ashes game there. They're putting a lot of effort into building up the server and it has a very up-and-coming feel.

My favorite, its no secret, is Find the Path. I love the mix of active and friendly community, quality GMs, frequent pbp games... And they are one of the most well-organized discord servers (for *any* topic) I'm a member of, which actually ends up being important. I'm in a few PFS games here at the moment, and in the past I have also played SFS, Modules, and APs here.

--

Anyhow, that's probably way more info than anyone wanted about discord servers but I really love them. They're a much smoother, richer experience than playing on Paizo IMO. Also I'll be running Burden of Envy on Find the Path for GameDay X and want to get people excited about the idea of playing there, ha ha.

Thanks, I love how effective Quiella is at healing. You may recall that when we played the scenario with that Thassilonian wizard that tries to wear the party down via attrition by dimension dooring back and forth to different ends of the dungeon: by the time we caught up to him the final time, Quiella had passively healed the party all the way back to full.

I am happy to spend my last channel to save the two wand charges. Or we can save it for a rainy day, so to speak. Up to the party.

Just posted this in my other games

Quote:

After some consideration I have decided I need to take an indefinite hiatus from nearly all of my games. Please continue without me. If that means there is not a spot for me when I return, I will understand. You can bot me or just remove me from scenes as you see fit; whatever is best for the party. If my PC dies due to botting decisions I will not be too aggrieved.

My energy levels are just too low and my burnout and disinterest is just too high. I need to be able to focus on taking care of myself without pressure from myself to return to my games. Things will probably get better once I get into a habit of regular exercise, which could be as soon as a few weeks from now.

Don't worry about me, though. I am doing okay. I live with my wife and 3 kids and that helps keep me from being totally dejected. Taking care of them, spending time with them, etc. Continues to bring a lot of meaning and purpose to me life. I also talk to a therapist every two weeks and have some other friends I keep in touch with.

---

This is one of the only games I plan to keep up with right now. It wouldn't be fair to ask you all to bot Quiella and still get chronicle sheets, not to mention that I would miss out on actually experiencing the scenarios.

Today is my anniversary and the next few days are busy ish. But I will try to post in gameplay soon.

Otha wrote:

Thanks for the info caps...but I must be missing something in the 2e ruleset (and that wouldn't surprise me one bit)...

I don't see how 2e gives you more options than 1e as far as archers go; in 1e just about all archery feats are open to you from the start. Whether you go Ranger, Fighter, Zen Archer, or some other ranged specialist, you're not restricted from the (formerly) traditional archery feats by class...

I saw the Archer Archetype (I got the 2e Humble Bundle) and read a little upon it. But it appeared to me, if I was a ranger, I couldn't choose that Archetype till 2nd level, taking Archer dedication. But I'd already have proficiency with bows from the ranger class (but I'm guessing my proficiency would be more advanced?)...and I wouldn't be able to take PBS till 4th level. Whereas, if I take fighter, I can get PBS at 1st level, yes? And it seems like you can get the better archery feats (Double Shot, Triple Shot) earlier with Fighter. While many of the same are offered with Archer, it takes longer to acquire them, at least from my limited understanding. But even as a fighter, I'd have to take a dip into some of the ranger feats (unfortunately sans most of the ranger abilities) to snag Deadly Aim to make him close to what I was playing in 1e...

I know I'm focused a lot on PBS but it seems pretty essential to me as it not only negates the Volley penalty, if you do use a shortbow you get +2 damage on your first increment...getting that at 1st level (only thru fighter) seems too good to pass up for another class where you'd have to wait till 4th level to get it...

Caps, I've played with and GM'ed for your characters; you're a good player and I respect your opinion. What I'm missing and where am I off?

As promised, here is my answer.

First let's look at baseline proficiency.

I contend that in PF1 you needed at least
- Weapon proficiency (bow of choice)
- Point blank shot
- Precise shot
In order to call yourself a competent Archer. So if you set aside racial bonus feats and archery Archetypes (which may not be compatible with other Archetypes you want) many classes had to wait for either level 3 or possibly level 5 to be competent archers.

In PF2, to be a competent Archer you need
- Weapon Proficiency (bow of choice)
That's it. That's the list. Get that and you can check the "competent Archer" checkbox on your mental character sheet.

Now, to be an Archer among Archers you need to go a bit further in either system.

In PF1 that looks like taking
- Deadly Aim
- Rapid Shot
- Manyshot
- Improved Precise Shot
- Weapon focus, longbow
These feats (especially the first 3) are the core of what makes PF1 archers the kings and queens of full attack damage.

In PF2 the comparable feats are
- Point Blank Shot
- Double Shot
- Triple Shot
- Hunted Shot / Monastic Archer Stance
- Hunter's Aim / Archer's Aim
I would argue that Point Blank Shot is pretty optional (none of my Archers have it and they mostly don't miss it), and you only need one or two (total) of the others in the list. Other than with Hunted Shot and Monastic Archer you're not able to increase your maximum number of attacks per round (like you can with Rapid Shot + Manyshot in PF1). Double Shot vs Hunted Shot work out to be different *styles* of archery rather than something that an archer needs to have both of to be effective (although you could take both if you wanted maximum versatility).

So whether you want to be someone who dabbles in archery--like a bard or wizard that needs something useful to do when they have a spare action--or you want to be a badass archer, either way the barrier to entry is lower in PF2e than it was in PF1e.

--

I think the heart of your beef with the system is not fully understanding how different it is from PF1e. One of the biggest things that I think people miss when coming from 1e is that doing nothing but attacking is rarely the best use of all of your actions. Counterintuitively, it might be an even worse use of actions for a Fighter Archer than for a Flurry Ranger Archer.

In PF2e, shortbows and longbows are not necessarily better or worse than one another. They have different tradeoffs and lead to a different style of play. Similarly, archer Fighters and archer Rangers (and archer Champions, and archer Monks, and archer Bards, etc.) have very different playstyles from one another. The Ranger has at least two different archery playstyles (each distinct from the Fighter style) contained in its class alone!

Consider this exchange...

Spoiler:
Rose wrote:

What's the general thought process on Monastic Archer Monk vs Flurry Ranger?

Monk will have better AC and saving throws, Ranger will have higher accuracy after the first attack, Ranger has the Hunt Prey tax
Which would you prefer? Or neither, such as by going Fighter?
caps wrote:

Well, Fighter might be "better," especially since they can get the action economy of the other two via multiclassing

But it's all about the feel you want.
Fighter can also pick up Point Blank Shot stance at level 1 before multiclassing, and an Ancient Elf Fighter could even pick up Assisting Shot at level 2.
But a Fighter will feel less woodsy than a Ranger, especially once you get to higher levels and the Ranger starts to get class features and access to woodsy class feats. With that said you can still have a pretty woodsy fighter via skills and skill feats.
Monk is going to be more mobile and doesn't have to wear armor; expert in unarmored means they'll have decent AC, especially with high dex.
If you want to be the best possible Archer, it's literally impossible to compete with fighter weapon Proficiency. Otherwise look at the higher level class feats and class features (difficult-to-impossible to replicate via multiclassing) and use those to determine which one has the feel you want.

And here my "literally impossible" quote is shown to likely be wrong:

Mirror, Nocticulan Herald wrote:
Flurry Ranger is also incredibly good accuracy-wise, maybe edging out Fighter in that it can reduce MAP to -2 max.

For context, this means that where a Fighter starts with the highest bonus to their first attack, their second attacks are at -5 and -10. Whereas a Flurry Ranger makes those 2nd and 3rd attacks vs their Hunted Prey at -3 and -6. At higher levels that becomes -2 and -4, and then finally -1 and -2. Essentially a Flurry Ranger trades accuracy on the first hit for better accuracy on the subsequent hits.

A Fighter using Double Shot steps down to the Ranger's level in terms of accuracy, but doesn't gain any action economy from the process. Meanwhile the Ranger has a level 1 feat that lets him attack the same target twice with just one action.

I could go on and on about this but I'll try to wrap up. :) The point is that PF2e supports many more styles of archery than PF1e did. Once a PF1e archer hits that second iterative attack, they become stationary full attackers. Pretty much all of them. In PF2e, you can do the "stationary full attack" style (that's what the Fighter feats lend themselves to), but there are so many other styles:
- mobile archer that always keeps 30+ feet away from their target, ensuring they have to spend 1-2 move actions to close into melee
- mobile archer that always stays within 60 feet of their target to take advantage of short range abilities (like sneak attack, perhaps)
- switch hitter that uses a longbow at distance and then Quick Draws a one-handed weapon if the enemy gets within 30' (I have a ranger that does this; she can throw her returning starknife at enemies that are close, stab them if they are adjacent, or otherwise shoot them with her longbow)
- mobile archer that adopts hit and run tactics, striking with one big hit once a round (perhaps a Precision ranger with the Gravity Bow spell) before slinking behind cover to avoid retaliation and make the target flat-footed the next time the archer pops out for a shot
- front-line archer that shoots creatures that attack her friends (hello ranged reprisal Paladin!)
- and more that I'm not thinking of
And each of these styles can probably spare some of their class feats (nevermind their skill, general, and ancestry feats!) to branch out and pick up some other abilities depending on just how far down the archery rabbit hole they want to go.

If you stayed with me this far, maybe you should try it out :) I am running PFS2e scenario 1-05 Trailblazer's Bounty as a play-by-post on Discord starting sometime in the next week or so; the game might appear to be full but throw yourself on the waitlist anyway and I'll take care of you. It's a wilderness exploration scenario with several combats where you could see how a given archer style fares in close quarters vs forested areas vs clearings. I will save you a spot if you would like one (same for anyone else reading this), and can even give you a few tips on a character you build. You don't even need to own any PFS2e rulebooks; everything in the CRB and the Lost Omens World Guide is free to use in PFS2 regardless of whether you own it or not.

P.S. Sorry for the length, I know it is a bit rambly. As the saying goes "I didn't have time to write you a shorter [post]"

The Additional Resources page says regarding Alien Archive 3 that

Quote:
Equipment: All equipment in this book with a listed item level and price is legal for play except for the EMP weapon fusion and flux fig.

and Diatha doesn't have its *own* item level or its *own* price. Instead it modifies the item level and price of other items. aonsrd.com seems to think it is not legal, but it seems ambiguous to me.

My search of the forums found the only reference to "Diatha" to be in SFS play-by-post games here on the boards, so obviously some players interpret it to be legal.

It seems to me like a lot of the 3PPs are sticking with 1e.

I know of at least one 3PP that is making their own organized play; Frog God games. Right now they are only doing VTT but they may open to doing PbP down the road,

I am surprised you are not interested in 2e, IHIYC. You should PM me about it

I have played with Ancestry Paragon in a lot of games.

At lower levels Ancestry Paragon doesn't feel like a power-boost at all. Low-level ancestry feats aren't powerful, and the few that are (debatably) powerful, a power-gamer will take even without Ancestry Paragon.

Some of the higher-level ancestry feats are more powerful... but I'm not sure they're that powerful relative to class feats and magic items the PCs already have access to at those levels.

Oh I guess we'll go to the wizard after the Mites then?

Wow, they took something that was simple and made it complicated :-(

Count me in for being hugely disappointed in the change to the Spells school items. No auto-heightening and a much narrower list (not to mention only getting 1 item) makes this benefit much harder to take advantage of.

FWIW, I *like* the schools overall.

Can anyone tell me where in the Guide I can find the one minion rule? I can't find it and I want to be sure I understand it. Or is it something just in the new guide?

Just in the new guide.

PFS2 is *moving to* a One Minion per PC rule.

Here is the exact text as it will appear on Wednesday.

Minions: With the exception of temporary creatures, such as those created by summon spells, no character can have more than one minion. Purchased Mounts do not count as minions, provided they do not take part in combat.

Will the organized play team be offering an explanation at some point for why this change is being made?

Magus feels like it should have access to both kinds of feats. Good martial feats for the Magus do feel like they're missing from the playtest.

So I read this blog and thought "they're going to stop making GMs write fame on Chronicles and then phase it out, neat." I did not understand that would mean I no longer get fame. There are several faction boons I was gearing up to buy, but I was waiting until I actually needed them. Now I *can't buy them at all*? That's... Pretty s*@+ty. I use the faction boons a lot on all of my characters, and even plan my builds around them. I get that at some vague point in the future there will be a new system that gives me access to (some of?) Those things, but not having access to them in the meantime is very upsetting.

I'm also not a fan of having to spend my AcP on those boons. Race boons are *expensive* and many of the faction boons are, in my opinion, must have. I don't like having to sacrifice race boons to get cool things related to my faction, and thematically I liked that my fame was tied to my *character's* achievements, rather than my achievements as a player/gm.

Is there a plan to hand out more AcP or reduce the cost of AcP things to make up for collapsing the two currencies into one?

New available races:

The choices offered in Chapter 3 of the Starfinder Core Rulebook are always available, as are the Legacy races in Chapter 13. Additionally, the following races from are always available provided you own a copy of the appropriate source book: draelik, formian, ikeshti, kalo, maraquoi, nuar, rhyphorian, verthani, witchwyrd from Starfinder Alien Archive, as well as izalguun from Starfinder Alien Archive 3

The new Second Seekers faction boons are pretty good. Seekers of Knowledge continues with this new faction, and there is a starship boon that is bonkers-good.

What races are y'all looking forward to making characters to the most? I'm happiest to see Nuar and Ryphorian up there.

striking spell with a one handed staff, move, cast the spell (or vice versa) the regrip. Next round, move, cast true strike and then strike with the staff 2 handed? or do the same with a bastard sword?

Why would you need to change your grip? To cast a material component spell?

So, the Staff Nexus affords little benefit (a cantrip) during level 1 and 2 since the 1st level spell would have to be charged from your first level slots, which is the same as memorizing the spell in the first place. Then at 3rd level you can charge the staff with a 2nd level spell to get 2 charges. Does this sound particularly weaker than the other theses (at least at low levels)??

You could also use Drain Bonded Item to recover the spell slot you spent to charge the staff. So even at level 1 it gives you increased versatility: instead of casting one spell 2x and another spell 1x, you can cast three spells 1x each.
