Seconding was Sor said. Take care of yourself and yours. ;)

I'll be off for the holidays, everyone - not back 'til Monday (sorry, meant to send a pre-warning, I usually do).
..and by back, I mean back online. It's not travel, it's toddler. ;)

I'm still really burnt out. I'm hoping it will pass, but this is still less important to me than getting some other things in my life sorted (hopefully those things will make play by post easier for me also).

You are an amazing writer and role player Arlen. I have enjoyed playing with you and you have brightened my life. I know this virtual space makes it harder to connect with the person typing the words. Misunderstandings are common and the other person’s tone and intent are based on the readers interpretation. In my own case I often have a hard time writing my character and having people see them the way I am trying to portray them. I became a PbP player out of necessity and a way to fulfill time and transport myself out of reality and give my mind something to escape to.
I have no idea if your feelings are driven from disinterest or depression, but I wish you the absolute best. I have found that if I can allow myself to get swept a long with the current a little bit I can save my energy and paddle for the shore, it is better than fighting against it and simply treading water is exhausting and gets me no where. Swim for what makes you feel alive.
Thank you for letting us know how you are feeling rather than just disappearing. I always wonder and worry about those who just vanish.
Thank you Arlen and I wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and the highest hopes and happiness in the coming New Year.

I really appreciated everything you said, Big John. I didn't think my RP had been that good so far, ha ha.
After some consideration I have decided I need to take an indefinite hiatus from nearly all of my games. Please continue without me. If that means there is not a spot for me when I return, I will understand. You can bot me or just remove me from scenes as you see fit; whatever is best for the party. If my PC dies due to botting decisions I will not be too aggrieved.
My energy levels are just too low and my burnout and disinterest is just too high. I need to be able to focus on taking care of myself without pressure from myself to return to my games. Things will probably get better once I get into a habit of regular exercise, which could be as soon as a few weeks from now.
Don't worry about me, though. I am doing okay. I live with my wife and 3 kids and that helps keep me from being totally dejected. Taking care of them, spending time with them, etc. Continues to bring a lot of meaning and purpose to me life. I also talk to a therapist every two weeks and have some other friends I keep in touch with.

Yaron raises his bow, seeking a target, and selects the easternmost recruit, then fires, Let's be quick..
[dice=Longbow]d20+4 Threat
[dice=Confirm]d20+4 Think that'll do[dice=Critical Damage]3d8 Wow, that takes all the steam out of critting with a x3
Dang! I know, always when we are trying to be epic, the dice roller doesn’t get the memo ;).

I have caught up on gameplay and I believe I'm ready to return. It seems I chose a very convenient time, since y'all are already back with the refugees.

Welcome back!

I'll be away for the long weekend, which for us Canucks, begins today. See everyone Monday.

I'm interested in trading my masterwork axe for the masterwork sword, but I think Big John should get first dibs.
I also think he should take the masterwork chainmail. If he doesn't want it and no one else does then I'll look into putting it in Arlen's pack. We're far away from an up-front fight but when we have one it is +3 AC over Arlen's studded leather. -4 is a huge ACP for a character that wants to try to be stealthy sometimes.
Arlen can also carry an alchemist's fire if necessary, but I think that should go to a more dedicated back liner with a higher Dex.
Arlen Ducote |
"several days of travel" should mean that Big John can heal up without having to use the potions.
Arlen Ducote |
Russet, on the other hand, may need some healing. He had 2 dmg leading into this fight (although I suspect that had been healed by the passage of time before the fight started) and took 15dmg in the fight. Unlike Arlen and Big John he doesn't have an extraordinary ability to heal himself once a day. Perhaps Faerieth can prepare a couple CLW for him each of the two travel days?

The issue, of course, is that the masterwork chain slows (whomever) to 20' -- something that wouldn't bother Arlen when he's mounted.

John being a Barbarian it'll only slow him to 30, but he's already got a masterwork breastplate

Ok, folks. I'm going to be heading out of town for the next two weeks to a place where I have no wifi and the towers are spotty -- all that to say, my access to the interwebs will be sketchy at best from tomorrow (Saturday the 31) until the Monday the 16th.
I imagine I'll pop in a bit at night when possible, but, don't count on me over the period. Feel free to bot as necessary. And don't worry, I won't force you to come up with a limerick to start his bardic performance. ;)
Arlen Ducote |
So I have a crazy idea. It only works if everyone buys in. I can explain it if you need it explained, or sell it to you if you find understand the appeal, or just drop it if any of you want to veto it right out.
What if we move this game to a discord server instead of playing it here on the message boards?
We could ask one of the online ledges (they're like Flaxseed, but on discord) to host us, or we could create our own server. Let me know your thoughts!
Arlen Ducote |
My selfish reason is that that is where most of my games are these days, and I prefer it.
Why do I prefer it? The formatting is much quicker to write, depending on what dice bot you use you can even set up macros for your dice, you can use whatever avatar you want, the UI is much easier and quicker to navigate (switching between channels is a button click and happens instantaneously), you can set up push notifications for the mobile and desktop apps if you want to, and even without push notifications it is really easy to check in and see if there are any new posts in your games.
There is a bit of a learning curve, particularly if you're not familiar with that kind of chat app.
**"Speech"**
*Thought*
((Out of character))
Dice example:
[1d20+5 longsword attack][1d8+3 slashing damage]
Macro example:
[Longsword]
would turn into whatever you define it to be but for our example would output the dice roll above

I think we lost some players... :_(
Almost two weeks went by and 3-4 people had to be botted, some of whom were botted 1 or more rounds before that one as well.
Maybe after this encounter we should remove their PCs for now?
GM, is the game going so slow because you've been waiting on them?
Darry Swiftfoot |
My apologiwes I thought i had posted. Either that or paizo ate it though its been a while since the site has done that i think.
I will do better
DM-Camris |
No, slowness is kinda my fault. Sometimes I get home and sit down to post and fall asleep at the computer. And the weekends, which you'd thing would have plenty of time to post, suddenly gets filled up with everything else.
We'll see who's left after this fight. I think Sor may not have posted for six months.

Okay, that makes sense. It would be nice for the game to move faster, but I understand having a busy life and no energy for posting.
I guess I'm curious: will you be modifying the AP so that we get through it faster even with a slower posting rate? Or do you think there's a time in the future that the game's pace might pick up?
DM-Camris |
There is a certain amount of "fat" in these APs which I will be trimming (unless it's interesting). The forest scene is kinda sandboxy, littered with scenarios where you can pick up supply units to take back to your refugee camp, which I will also mostly be trimming.
Really, I just need to get into a more uptempo rhythm.
Arlen Ducote |
Yeah, I like to trim the fat as well. I think these APs are designed for groups that meet for 4 hours every week, not for groups that make a few pbp posts a week. Even a post a day it takes a long time to get through the content if you try to do it all.
For my part, I don't mind you trimming the refugee camp mechanics. I think the guerilla tactics part of this is interesting, and the guerilla resources part could be interesting in a real-time game, or maybe a really active and engaged discord pbp game, but for a message board pbp it feels like a lot of work and a lot of things to keep track of.
Faerieth |
The refugee camp aspect is I feel a key part of this entire AP, or at least this first part, and I'd rather that stay. I've been pretty much keeping track of the resources anyway.
Arlen Ducote |
The irony is not lost on me that I complained about how fast this game was going and then didn't post for ~5 days.
Arlen Ducote |
Okay, I know I've complained before about roll20 on mobile. It sucks just about as much as always there. But tonight I couldn't even use it on my touchpad. When I tried to drag my Arlen token it would drag him *and drag the screen at the same time* so that he kept getting farther and farther away from where I was trying to get to and I actually had to use my phone instead.
GM, would you be willing to try Tableplop for future combats? It is a more mobile-friendly VTT. If not, I'll keep coping with roll20. I know you might have a lot of prep already done on roll20 and I wouldn't want you to waste it.
Yaron Oravar |
I'll be away on a family holiday starting tomorrow (the 27) and back the 5th -- but given the need to unpack with small child, probably not actually able to be online to catch up and post before the 8th.
Feel free to bot Yaron in the meantime -- for the rest of this combat, it'll be all about the performing and shooting. ;)
