Pathfinder Second Edition Character Sheets

Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Many of you are probably already dreaming up characters for Pathfinder Second Edition, writing them down in journals, carving them in ancient stones, or maybe even incanting them to the darkest corners of the Abyss. Others might be waiting on the official character sheets to begin their journey. Fortunately, that wait is over. You can grab both the full-color and printer-friendly version of the character sheet today!

If these aren’t quite what you’re looking for, you might instead opt for the Character Sheet Pack, which releases August 1st! This handy folder contains custom character sheets for all 12 classes, with expanded sheets for every detail you might want to record about your character, from the location of their gear to the name and stats of their animal companion. You can get the Character Sheet Pack right here on paizo.com or at your favorite local game store starting August 1st!

I mean... you can still inscribe your statistics on ancient stone if you want; just don’t ask us to help drag it to your game table.

It's a suit of armour.

Neck opening at the top and the pointy bits on the left side are the pauldrons (shoulder armour) and sleeve.
I believe it's from an existing piece of art, but I can't remember which (I just seem to recall that I've seen that shape before).

I believe it's based on the suit of elven chain on p. 356 of the Playtest Rulebook.

Indeed. I just scoured the blogs to see if I could find it. Found it in... the playtest armour blog. ;-)

Why not include TEML values as a faint numbers right in each entry? Like this:

I'm afraid I have to agree with most of the people here who don't like the new sheet.

The color version is way too busy. It's one thing for the sheet to pop, but all the bright colors draw the eye away from the important bits, which is what the player actually writes on the sheet!

I'm also miffed that there seem to be boxes for everything. That's helpful for knowing where to put stuff, but it also makes it very hard to be flexible. Even if there were a "misc" box to put stuff that didn't go elsewhere, that would help. But I'm in the camp that thinks character sheets should be a bit messy. There should be room to write in that your character has a +2 to bash open doors because she rolled nat 20s on three consecutive door-bashings and everyone decided she's somehow an expert at it. Or the extra feat that her god granted her after she did a particularly great service. Or a place to write the name of that one NPC in the margin who sold the PC her sword.

Having lots of little boxes for everything makes it hard to go "outside the box" (literally!) and also looks intimidating for a new player.

I also find that having a big blank space to write in class features/feats is much better than a bunch of little narrow boxes. Some things take up way more room to describe than others, and for most characters, you will never get up to level 20 anyway. I'd much rather just have a big blank column labeled "Class Feats" and let the player choose how much to write there (or not).

I feel like it would have been a good idea to use something a bit more recognizable as the backdrop. A nice, basic heater shield shape, for example would work well and be instantly recognizable.

Felt like a momentous occasion.

Thank you to everyone a Paizo for the year of joy you have already given me and the years of joy to come.

That's great for 3PP.

Less so for.... pretty much anyone who wants to make power cards or homebrew feats for personal use. You shouldn't have to resort to pirating a font or registering as an official publisher to homebrew.
And it's not idea for Paizo to have to "approve" endless waves of GMs registering as compatible publishers just so they can make NPCs and monsters that look right.

Given every single character will have four or five feats that unlock different actions, being able to make cards or cheat sheets will be a must. And typing [A] and [A][A] looks lame...

For homebrew stuff, you could use unicode symbols to approximate:

◈ Single Action
◈◈ Two-Action Activity
◈◈◈ Three-Action Activity
⟐ Free Action
⤾ Reaction

Way too busy and spread out for my taste (which seems weird to say both at the same time), but the AC calculation just sprawls, has a bunch of little boxes, redundant boxes and the shield bonus (for when it applies) is way away from the default AC number.

Having a PROF box and TEML boxes is part of the problem for space concerns all over the first page, and since you'll only ever have one apply at a time and they're part of the PROF calculation, they seem redundant. [And weird since level + prof seem like separate bits to me, not just one thing together]. And since weapon and armor proficiency are tracked separately on the same page, its very redundant to have the string of TEML boxes repeated over and over again.

Actions, free actions and reactions buried on the third page is just strange to me, especially since its after a bunch of background detail that you won't be looking for when you're trying to remember what you can do. I'd rather have more room in the feats and features sections to have the info on actions with the relevant source it came from.

Can't even parse the boxes attached to spells. There is a blank under actions, but tick boxes for each type of action (which don't even apply to several casters). I can't figure out why you'd need the blank. Most spells are just S, V- tick both and call it a day.

Can't see using these over writing things on a piece of note paper. A single sheet, most of the time.

I really hope someone makes a custom sheet that just has a box for proficiency bonus and then the words "+Level" next to that in place of the TEML boxes - not only would that feel less busy, it would mean less rewriting your character sheet every time you level up.

Adding my voice to the whole "ye gods, my eyes" reaction I had when I first opened the color one. I will never be using the color version, and not just because of the ink it kills. Black and white is better, but if you think this is going to be LESS intimidating to a new player, oh god you're wrong. I mean, it's four pages, and it's endless, endless boxes. Yeah, not every class will use all those boxes, but compared to the classic sheet, this seems like a flood of information you have to process here.

I second the notion that you really didn't need to reproduce all four TEML boxes as many times as it's reproduced. ONE box after each relevant spot in which the player writes the current TEML value would have done it, and would remove 75% of all those tiny boxes.

I look forward to seeing the various fan modifications that will inevitably result (several of which already have so far).

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

Just wanted to say I actually appreciate all the TEML boxes everywhere. Especially with the blank boxes next to them in the weapon proficiency bit for when you're trained in some martial weapons but not all, or in a specific weapon.

The character sheet is a face of your game. This isn't a good first impression at all.

There are a lot of good ideas in this thread, but I've gone from buying the sheet pack as a PDF to not.

Those are good suggestions, thanks!

I'm using emoji in my statblock template, but I've added these to the notes section for folks who prefer them (or if I end up liking them better than the emoji when I start printing out characters)

I tried some unicode characters at first but they didn't "pop" enough in the statblock for my liking. (They weren't as good as these, though, I just grabbed the first that came to hand. So I will have to try these out.)

Thanks! My secret weapon is this searchable database of Unicode characters. I searched for "diamond", and then "arrow", to find these symbols. Other interesting diamonds are: ❖ ⬖ ⬗ ⬘ ⬙.

I wonder if they can add a way to use the action, etc. symbols on the forums similar to how WotC let people use the mana symbols from MtG on their forums back in the day.

I've created some lower-contrast character sheets based on suggestions made in this thread. I just overlaid some transparent white boxes over each page with varying amounts of opacity (range 10–60).

Download the greyscale character sheets here.

I was really hoping that the landscape sheets from way back in the playtest would make the final cut. They were so cool and unique, but now we're stuck with another boring (and ugly) portrait layout.
I am however, looking forward to the character sheet packs. And I do wanna say thanks for making the "printer-friendly" black and white ones for us to download.

Can we please get a copy of the character sheet that doesn't make you show the math to get to the numbers? It's like your math teacher making you show all your work. People have already begun doing this and it looks great

I have further modified the B/W character sheet.

Changes include:
- All "Prof" boxes removed
- Grey used for text that doesn't need to pop-out at you too much (looks less busy when you fill it in)
- Most of the empty Ability Mod boxes have just been replaced by the Ability Mod.
- Cleaned up the look of the Action type and proficiency keys in the upper left of the front page.

To do:
- I want to replace the armor image with a shield silhouette or something.

While it is a good idea, you are supposed to fill in the boxes up to and including your current level, so all you would see would be 0 0 6 8, so at a glance it would look like the value is 6 instead of 4.

Guys, you know I love you but I really can't get behind this sheet at all. I just don't like it and I'm already anxious to give this out to my players. I've been "in design" for 20 years and this goes against so much of what I've learned in that time, I don't know how it was signed off on.

Who did the Playtest sheet? That person should have been asked to do this one. I know somebody probably put a lot of work into this and I'm really not trying to sound mean, it's just not the look or feeling I think PF2 deserves.

At least you've given me a summer project! I'll be throwing my hat into the redesign ring too.

Updated my edit of the official B/W character sheet YET again. With the last update I simplified the ranged and melee attack sections on the front page. I removed the TEML boxes since those are already in the weapon proficiency section just below those attacks. I also put a singular damage box and expanded the trait box.

I think the key is to remove unnecessary stuff, grey out some text and spread stuff out a bit. The less compacted and full stuff is, the less intimidating it is to new players. Also, for me at least, the easier it is to use in play.

Edit:
I think I do need to modify things a bit more in the Melee/Ranged attack section. Its just too big. I am also not sure why there are 3 melee attacks and 3 ranged attack sections. While some may use all that, I think it might be best to just have 4 general attack sections (that can be ranged or melee). I have a feeling that I can open up quite a bit of space there and the sheet will remain very usable for 99% of folks.

I will work on that later and post another update. Once I got it where I want it, I will make a form fillable version.

I like the overall look and layout of the PF2e sheets. (Just started book 3 of Reign of Winter for my twice a month Sunday group) so I’m not sure how soon I’ll be running (or playing) a PF2e game, but I’m eager to give it a try. (Lol. Yeah, I’m biting the bullet and taking the plunge).

Also ... not at all to derail ... but is it just me, or are the monster stats blocks and/ or NPC stat blocks (for PF2e) very similar in layout etc to Starfinder? (I’ve been looking/side by side comparing) and to my eyes there seems to be a similarity. (By the way, not a complaint whatsoever). Just a observation/question.

Peace
