After sharing that story, I vote we keep the name. And maybe he lives.
If you put a 14 in INT you could Multiclass into Inventor...

DM rainzax |

Willowshore Lore only comes with certain backgrounds, no? Can we lobby for all of us to be trained in Willowshore Lore as a free feat, since we're all from the area? Or can I switch my Tea Lore out for Willowshore Lore?
I’ll meet you halfway there. As the SOG PG already futzes with the Background mechanic a little bit, if you wanna swap in a different thematic Lore skill, I can sign off on that.
I was considering a Houserule that “my Background Lore skill automatically improves proficiency at levels 3/7/15 free of cost” if folks are interested in implementing that.
=)

I used my Skilled human heritage feat to be trained in Willowshore Lore. If I could improve the proficiency with the 3/7/15 for Kazuki Sato, I'd be happy.

@Watery Soup: What an amusing story! I vote to keep Ho Lan, at least as the nickname that everyone calls him (whether or not he appreciates that).
@DM rainzax: Any free improvement to skill proficiencies is welcome by me. Thank you!

It occurred to me that we might want a way to track certain useful posts so we don't have to scroll for twenty minutes to find something. I'm sharing a link to a doc called Useful Info for Season of Ghosts AP where I'll be compiling them. Feel free to nudge me if you want something added or if you know of a better way to organize it.
I'm thinking this will be most useful if we need to whip up another character at some point.

Cool, I'll take Willowshore Lore, then.

I'm down for this as long as it doesn't unbalance the game at later levels. Sometimes there are disproportionately lower DCs for Lore skill checks later. If our proficiency automatically increases, we might end up critting a lot of checks later.
On a related note to the Useful Info document, would creating a Discord thread be helpful for ooc discussion, sharing links, and whatnot?
Not for me. I don't check Discord very often, probably once a month or so.

DM rainzax |

Auntie Wu,
Thanks for that, I will link in the campaign header when I get a moment.
roll4initiative,
Sharing an opinion with Watery Soup, but for a different reason, I actually happen to be vehemently opposed to using discord for PbP. My reasons are because I do not like additional notifications (I use discord mainly to talk to family), because it breaks the asynchronicity of PbP (something I enjoy about the format), these two reasons compounding to essentially heighten to become an irritating, uncompartmentalized, and frankly unnecessary distraction.
Strong opinion warning!
=)
Watery Soup,
Let’s try it out (free scaling proficiency for your one Background Lore), and if it becomes problematic, disassemble it later. Sound good?

Watery Soup |

Regarding the scaling proficiency, sounds good.
Regarding Discord, though it hurts our shared cause, I'll point out that you can selectively mute servers if you wish, so you can easily have uncompartmentalized notifications from your family while compartmentalizing Pathfinder notifications. Hopefully that doesn't change your mind! :D

DM rainzax |

It does not.
Arbitrarily strong opinion, I know.

DM rainzax |

Alright gang, invited our 5th, who actually applied with two characters, and will pick one to play.
Going to work on getting a checklist for "before the game" tasks to make sure we are ready.
Once we get that out of the way, I have already typed up my first Gameplay post and saved it on my computer - I am itchin' to run this, and very excited to begin this adventure with all of you!

Yay! I'm so glad PaleDim got in. (spousal bias)

Kazuki Sato |

Friendly NPC:
Willowshore Stables; Kum Soon-chong (male human veterinarian), and his teenage son, Meng-sung (male human veterinarian).
Kum Soon-chong, his son, and Kazuki have a good relationship. They share a mutual respect for animals and often exchange tips on caring for them. Strictly against the harm to animals and hunting animals for sport, Kazuki appreciates Kum's & Meng-sung's compassionate approach to caring for animals.
Unfriendly NPC:
Governor Heh Shan-Bao.
Kazuki has an unfriendly relationship with Governor Heh Shan-Bao, who was responsible for the exploitation of Willowshore's resources by the industrialists. Kazuki strongly disagrees with the governor's policies and has openly voiced his disapproval. Their interactions are often tense and marked by conflicting views on how the town should be managed.

My opinion on Discord: Some useful discussion happens there and some here. That's two places to look when trying to find something, so it takes much longer. I prefer to keep it all in one place.

Vekka Tchakon |

Oh hey! Thank you for selecting me!
I did not expect to be selected with character choice, so I'm open to inputs from others.
That said, I think Vekka makes the most sense here for party balance. I really liked both characters, so no worries there. Vekka has my more recent creative energy and is an "interesting" front-liner.
Now I need a hot minute to catch up on the full discussion thread, BUT I did just read the introductory post on the bus on the way home.
The house rules make sense to me and I agree with them. One confusion that seems could arise is the fact that earn income is above and beyond the wealth-by-level abstraction. That would seem to make the rollover / soft-rebuild picture a little murky at level up? Maybe it's not so bad, and I haven't really imagined a specific problem there yet.

Some will use Downtime to Retrain character options. Others will use Downtime to Earn Income or Craft Items. Others to, I dunno, Atone, or find a new Animal Companion, or... you know, other Downtime stuff.
If you choose to Earn Income, I will have you track it yourself as a separate track, and then say you are Leveling to 3rd, choosing the "Lump Sum" option from Table 10-10. You would get the amount described from the table, plus whatever amount you have generated using Earn Income, with which to "(re)purchase" all of your character's gear.
I think it will become clearer when you are actually tasked with Leveling Up.
=)

Vekka Tchakon |

Okie, caught up on the discussion thread.
Current skills Acrobatics +5, Arcana +5, Athletics +7, Crafting +5 (+6 when crafting Woodworking items.), Diplomacy +3, Stealth +5, Tea Lore +5
Friendly relationship Jubei at the Mother's Coil. Perhaps Jubei was delighted to have such an attentive, dedicated student. The result is that the two love passing large amounts of time together.
Unfriendly relationship Still thinking on this one. Per "Tengu Animosity", it could be anyone sympathetic to the jorogumo. The governor could work, but that seems like too impersonal an animosity (someone who knows there are haters, and probably doesn't care).
I will craft my first game post tomorrow. It's late and I'm nodding off.

NPC Relationships |

Players,
I am thinking that the “one friendly” and “one unfriendly” should be counted among the common villagers, rather than the local government officials, if that makes sense. I think it's helpful to think of it as small-town petty squabbles / alliances, like, "once she was rude to me" or "i don't like how he let's his child run free" or "she wears the ugliest shoes" type of things. We will get to the governor... but for now, let's stick to people on this alias's list (copied from PG).
@Close Ties Background - will you each choose a second NPC to begin the game in good standing with, but more than just "friendly", this person and you are on even better terms, and they regard you with the "helpful" attitude marker instead!
@Ho Lan - I have moved Huo Tian-Zhe to "helpful", let me know if that is what you want, choosing another NPC to be "friendly" - or vice versa.
@Vekka - I have moved Jubei to "helpful", let me know if that is what you want, choosing another NPC to be "friendly" - or vice versa.
@Kazuki - I think I'd like you to choose either the father or the son, but not both.
I have condensed some of the player’s guide info in this alias, if you want to continue to peruse it for personalities around town.
=)

Kazuki Sato |

Interesting. I was hoping to be friendly with a bunch of people in town. So, this is more of a special bond sort of thing I assume. I might change some things including one of my edicts. The two are too similar. I might go with a "protect the community" edict.

Vekka Tchakon |

Would any of those NPCs carry over the tengu aversion?

Settlement |

Would any of those NPCs carry over the tengu aversion?
Settlements have traits.
Notice the one for Willowshore spoilered in this avatar's dashboard!
Or perhaps your questions is: Can someone simultaneously hold prejudice for another's ancestry while still maintaining a "friendly" or even "helpful" attitude towards them?
My personal answer: It would depend on the person / NPC.
A perhaps more direct (but possibly not helpful) answer: All the AP would like you to know about starting the game - including the NPCs around town - is contained within the Player's Guide.
=)

For those having difficulty choosing final NPCs, I have numbered them in this alias's profile #1-#25, so here are some casual RNG suggestions to get ball rolling!
Auntie Wu @ 1d25 ⇒ 23 1d25 ⇒ 8 @ Ba-Ming Ouh (female human priest) @ Nine Ear Shrine (W9)
Ho Lan @ 1d25 ⇒ 8 1d25 ⇒ 9 1d25 ⇒ 3 @ Meng-sung (male human veterinarian) @ Willowshore Stables (W2)
Kazuki Sato @ 1d25 ⇒ 2 @ Kum Soon-chong (male human veterinarian) @ Willowshore Stables (W2)
Vekka Tchakon @ 1d25 ⇒ 8 1d25 ⇒ 13 @ Nadoya Sanmi (female human family matriarch) @ Downtown Willowshore (W15)
=)

These are not meant to be specifically positive or negative? I was mulling over some choices this morning, there is something appealing about using a random choice as a constraint to make something work :)
BTW, I will get out my 0-post today.

Oh, I thought the second NPC was only for the Close Ties background folks.
For Auntie Wu, a secondary friendly NPC would probably be Mountain Summit Grass. They know she likes certain special dried mushrooms in her tea.

No no. You chose the Governor as your “unfriendly” NPC, and I’d like you to instead choose a townsfolk.
And yes, a second “helpful” NPC is for Close Ties background only.
Everyone else is one “friendly” and one “unfriendly”
Kazuki's friendly NPCs: Kum Soon-chong (Vet) & Yun Mong-Un (woodcarver).
Unfriendly: Luo Xi Yang (Lawyer). She's not happy with Kazuki's rebellious attitude and that he often gets in trouble.
No no.
Unless you have the Close Ties background, choose one "friendly" and one "unfriendly" NPC.
Do you want the father or the son?

I have recorded everyone’s choices so far in this alias’s profile - check it out!
And yes, one "friendly" (positive) and one "unfriendly" (negative).
Close Ties background gets an additional "helpful" (super positive) NPC attitude / relationship.

Searching through your posts, I see you have selected your "unfriendly" - disregard the above message!

Kazuki Sato |

Background skills: Hunting Lore & Nature. Do they both auto-scale? If not, will take Nature to auto-scale.
Home: Quaint cabin southeast of the eastern Silvermist Lodge (W5).
NPC Relationships:
Friendly: Kum Soon-chong (Veterinarian).
Unfriendly: Luo Xi Yang (Lawyer).
Rarity Boons: None chosen/needed. If I'm allowed to choose something later, I'll take it.
Religion: Kazuki is more in tune with nature, however, if he venerates a deity, it would be Daikitsu.
Location of Shrine: A burbling brook, the forest. A bird singing in the morning. The natural world around him is his shrine. However, he'll offer a blessing at the shrine of Daikitsu once in awhile.

Settlement |

Kazuki Sato knows that the shrine to Daikitsu is the Nine Ear Shrine (W9), and that Invoking it’s Blessing (a 10-minute activity requiring a single copper piece), in addition to using the Religion skill or Daikitsu Lore skill, may also be accomplished with the Survival or Farming Lore skills!
Auntie Wu knows that the shrine to Pharasma is the Lady of Souls (W10), and that Invoking it’s Blessing (a 10-minute activity requiring a single copper piece), in addition to using the Religion skill or Pharasma Lore skill, may also be accomplished with the Medicine and Fortune-Telling Lore skills!

Well, that's a cool bit of knowledge known.

![]() |

While Auntie Wu respects her, she probably sees Elizeth Candora as a bit too formal and tied to "the establishment". She'd probably enjoy Luda Bama's company better.
Correction on Auntie Wu's unfriendly NPC: use Zheng Peng, the watch officer who always suspects her of having contraband substances (for good reason). While she's not best buds with Elizeth Candora, she does respect her.
Rarity boons: I think all my choices for her happened to be PFS standard. I'll double check, but likely save this boon for later.
Background skill: Currently she has Hunting Lore from her Outskirt Dweller background. That's okay, but can I change it to farming lore, from the South Bank Traditionalist background? That fits better with her "loves plants" theme.

Ho Lan |

□) First Post
Will do this tomorrow.
□) Heirloom
I'm relatively indifferent, but the Guide makes us make sure each is chosen, so between Sigurd and Lan, it's (a) one predictable silver piece (Advanced Player’s Guide 262) and a vial containing one dose of oil of potency and (b) one cold-iron chunk worth 10 gp. Lan will take whichever one Sigurd doesn't choose, or 1d2 ⇒ 2 the oil if he too has no preference.
□) Home
Lan's house is in W18, near (preferably right next to) Tian-Zhe's house.
□) NPC Relationships
Helpful: Huo Tian-Zhe (W18)
Friendly: Dr. Damihansig Mababangloob (W19)
Unfriendly: Zheng Peng (W15)
□) Location of Shrine (if any)
Ho Lan keeps a small, secret shrine to Fumeiyoshi underneath his bed, but he would know the location of any shrine to Shizuru, as he would keep up appearances by pretending to worship.

Vekka Tchakon |

□) Background Skill
Tea Lore
□) NPC Relationships
For the other friendly I think Kawaka could make sense here. While Vekka's martial and arcane devotions are particularly intense and personal, he sees the community function of Kawaka guild dedication. He looks for something of an anchoring in Tengu culture in Kawaka (whether or not he finds it, or projects it).
He also would respect Yun Mong-Un in this way, and has perhaps at least briefly shared his own woodworking with her, either to get advice or as the final product.
For the unfriendly character, Vekka would either resent Luda Bama for poisoning the local community with substances, or else Granny Hu for allowing her to continue.
(Yes, when he learns of Auntie Wu's habits, he may take on an indignant streak).
□) Rarity Boons
the Invoke True Name cantrip from Secrets of Magic (rare)
□) Location of Shrine (if any)
There isn't a shrine to Nethys, so this answer is going to continue to be that he deepens his faith in the scrolls at the Mother's Coil. There may not be another soul in town who worship's Nethys.

The shrine of Shizuru isn't too far from the cathedral to Pharasma. Elizeth Candora didn't mind the shrine. Or maybe it's a sign of their friendship.

Post made. I usually don't write posts that are too long, so don't let this one scare you :)
For starting the game, will there be any interaction ahead of the festival proper where we can test our character dispositions, or are we okay being thrown together such that the other party members are more-so faces-from-the-crowd until now?

We are going to start the game the morning of the first day of summer.
You guys are welcome to work in previous events by character dialogue, but we will not explicitly role play anything before this start day.
=)
Edit: With Ho Lan’s post, I will drop the first official post of Season of Ghosts!

I suspect Ho Lan and Sigurd will get along well. Or at least Sigurd will be glad to talk to someone else about Shizuru.
