Grandmaster TOZ |
The staff member looks at Selter in confusion. "Uh, yes, I think we can do that." His expression brightens at Bo's request. "Certainly, sir!" He moves with a purpose to the kitchen to fulfill the order.
Not-Trixie |
Not-Trixie takes a piece of warm bread. "So, Master Bagalom, you said you had something you wanted to tell us? A tale, I believe?" She smiles at their host encouragingly.
Grandmaster TOZ |
The gnomish leader takes a pull of his ale before speaking, his expression losing a bit of jovialness. "I had thought it best to allow you all to enjoy your meal before discussing the matter. Such serious business is like to cause a loss of appetite and ruin the relaxation after a long journey. But I suppose you and your companions are of tougher stomachs than that?"
Not-Trixie |
"If it's a serious enough issue to bring this much stress and worry to your town, I can only imagine what you must be feeling right now," Not-Trixie answers solemnly. "If we can help, we would be honored to do so as quickly as possible. Isn't that right?" She turns to her companions for confirmation.
Narayan Singh |
Narayan puts down his already mostly empty bowl and nods. "Yess. Do not worry. If we may attend to your troubles, we will be happy to do sso."
Grandmaster TOZ |
As you finish up your meal, it is obvious that a number of the locals have slowly filled the common room, clearly trying and failing to be inconspicuous. They do remain a respectful distance from the table, even if their ears are clearly bent towards the conversation. "Everyone had their fill?" Looking around to confirm the meal is done, Adagre nods before continuing. "Evil has come to our town. A week ago, the first of our neighbors vanished—fishermen who rose before dawn for the morning’s catch out on the lake. Then the following night, old Margatha was taken from her cottage, her front door smashed to splinters. Every night since, someone else is taken. Finally, last night, our militia had enough. They decided to guard the market. There were ten of them in all…I can still hear their screams. We don’t know what we are going to do. We have no more warriors among us. We are a simple people. Will you help us?” As the gnome lays out the grim details, the gathered patrons can't help but seem to lean in, hanging out the words and the plea.
Not-Trixie |
”Of course we will,” Not-Trixie answers gently. ”And of there’s any hope of returning people, we will do our best to bring them home.” She rises to her feet and addresses the crowd. ”Has anyone seen what has happened these past nights?”
Grandmaster TOZ |
As Not-Trixie agrees to help, the gathered townsfolk erupt in a joyous cheer, hope replacing the apprehension that has hung over them since your arrival. Promises of free food, blessings in the name of the gods, and tearful pleas to find lost loved ones almost drown out the dour warnings of grisly fates from the handful of pessimists in the crowd. The magistrate calls for the shouting to stop, finally having to stand on the table and gesture wildly before the crowd settles enough for you to hear him again. "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your bravery. I have little idea how better to proceed than post you to the marketplace when night comes. Whatever terror plagues us, it came to our militia there, so I believe that it will come to you as well. You are welcome to do as you please until then." Not-Trixie receives a dozen accounts of strange sounds and horrific screams, but quickly learns that everyone still alive has been barricaded in their homes each night, shutters closed tight and doors locked, preventing any witnesses to what has plagued the town.
A Perception or Survival check around town would help you investigate for clues as to what happened.

Investigating the home of Margatha, splinters and claws mar the doorframe, indicating at least one attacker possesses monstrous inhuman strength. From there and other broken residences are trails in the dirt where bodies have been dragged to the east, towards the lake.
As you track the markings to the beach, multiple footprints can be seen along the drag trails. At least five humanoid attackers can be made out. High above the waterline, what appears to be the larger tracks of a boat remain. Multiple instances of the mystery boat can be found up and down the beach, never visiting the same stretch twice.
As the afternoon wanes, the sun begins to draw low to the horizon. The townsfolk begin to disappear inside their homes, a few offering well wishes before bolting doors and shutters shut.
Map updated.

Narayan prepares for nightfall by gathering wood and kindling to set fires ablaze scattered around the village.
Where will Narayan place the bonfires and when will he light them?
Bo Goh Twang |
It looks like the buildings are all a single story. Bo will be flying on his carpet over the fountain (about 40' up). I think this would be a perfect instance for a Nightbane Quiver. Any one got 16K laying around?
Per the description: A carpet of flying can hover without making a Fly skill check and gives a +5 bonus to other Fly checks.
Narayan Singh |
As marked on the map, and unless there's not enough fuel etc. then he'll first light them around dark.
Grandmaster TOZ |
Narayan is pretty sure the most he would get out of such fires is an hour or so before they burn out. Unless they catch the buildings on fire, which is a whole other problem.
Selter Sago de'Morcaine PFS |
Self forgot to ask if prior attacks were early or late in night. This may be boring.
... I think this would be a perfect instance for a Nightbane Quiver. ...
That is pretty kool. Never seen that before.
To the rest of the group, Sssince boatsss were usssed, ssshould Ssself take water form to look for approaching boatsss or wait here?
I could change into something like a water elemental or dolphin to rapidly move around in the water and tell if anything is splashing about. Mister 'hover platform' could watch the shore from the skies. The risk is that I might not be there very quickly if something gets past me or attacks from a different direction.
BTW: This time I remember to hand my wand of CLW to Not-Trixie so it is accessible if I change form.
Not-Trixie |
”Only if you don’t put yourself at risk.” Not-Trixie’s face scrunches up with worry. “What of something else is also hiding in the lake? How will you let us know you need help, or that something is coming? The Watcher roper might not have been looking for a fight, but I don’t think we’ll get that lucky again.”
Grandmaster TOZ |

Bo Goh Twang |
Have we heard of any other villages or settlements along the 15-mile shoreline? Just want to know if others may be in peril.
Grandmaster TOZ |
There are no notable settlements elsewhere, besides individual homes further out. The repeated attacks on Whistledown suggest it is the most attractive target.

Selter's preparations prove wise, as the waning moon rises with only a sliver of its crescent showing. The night stretches longer, hours passing as the fires grow dim.

I don't think Vendalfek spotted them since only Bo's name was mentioned. If that's the case, he wouldn't know to act yet. If not... he still wouldn't do anything yet for fear of making himself a target. XD
