ahh I see. The most I hear about people's past roleplaying the younger I feel, which counteracts me feeling old due to being called "Uncle Aron" by my nephews.
Ah, then allow me to make you feel better. I gamed a lot between the late 70's and 2000. Started back with PbP here about a year and a half ago after a decade hiatus and have been loving it.
I have a great step-daughter and two grandsons that can me "Mo". Hope that makes "uncle" sound a lot better!

Only one nephew here, and he is not old enough to talk yet. I will probably just tell him to call me by my first name to annoy my sister-in-law though, hehehe.
Yeah I think it was about 1980 myself...boxed basic set...totally didn't know how to play, but we had fun anyways.
I went to AD&D and played up to a 3333 level halfling thief who was running around killing the gods...no it wasn't realistic even by AD&D standards...lol's

Didn't get to level 3333, but my one attempt at DMing, my friend got his elvish thief to like level 15 in one night - and yeh, it was pretty much Move Silently, Hide in Shadows, Backstab, die - collect loot, move on to next victim
