The Playtest Comes Out In 24 Hours But-

-The clock only starts once you commit to your first character concept.

What Ancestry/Background/Class do you make your first taste of P2E?

Feel free to hold off if you're waiting for a certain blog.

I wanna try an elf barbarian.

I haven't settled on a background, but the elf's ability to pick a new skill for the day, plus the barbarian's rage and totem, seems like an excellent blend of insight and savagery to try out, and more feasible than in P1E. That's probably my first priority currently, not counting porting over existing characters.

Goblin paladin. Probably an orphan background or something like that.

I stall, forcing the continuation of PF1 due to the inability of Paizo to stay inactive that long.

Wizard, human enchanter, cat familiar taking speech as one of the two dailies. I also really want to take Rogue for a spin, but I think testing that Wizard is no longer a dull and unrewarding slog at first level is higher priority.

to many to choose from on my side.

After the last blog, I'd go with a barbarian, most likely dragon totem. Ancestry would probably be dwarf. Not sure about background. We don't have a full list of those as far as I know. Anything with a Strength boost, I guess. Blacksmith would be ok.

Until we have the Monk preview....

Goblin Barbarian, with the Suspicious Totem to reflect and couple with her ingrained suspicion of non-goblinoid people, probably with a background catering to survival in the wilderness.

Testing the more drastic changes should take priority, I agree. (After all, that's why there's a preliminary release of the new edition!)

I'm simply too inexperienced with the classes already previewed to be able to make any sort of comparison against the 1E versions.

As of now, angry, drunk, Superstition Barbarian, that detests magic so much, he not only refuses magical aid, but destroys all magic items, or tries, even those belonging to other characters "Grr, give me that!" *grabs magic item and starts trying to angrily break it*

While "breaks all magic items" is too much to be a mechanical requirement, it makes for a neat roleplay option.

As for me, I'm going to do my best to make a melee - focused cleric. Maybe a CG cleric of Milani. If the cleric can fill the "Holy Knight"/Warpriest design space well enough, I'll be much less concerned about the alignment restrictions on the Paladin.

I can immediately see the TWF-specialist becoming incredibly paranoid going to sleep around this barbarian....

I wanna multiclass! Tell me how!

Rogue or alchemist, with the heal skill maximized.

Looking into poison use - unfortunately those rules haven't been revealed yet.

I'll be rules-hunting to see if I can make a PC that specializes in heal, harm, buff, debuff with herbs/poisons/chemicals only.

If I had to pick right now, I'd go Goblin Urchin Rogue. I really want to take the new skills system for a test drive, so Rogue is a given. Goblin is the newest ancestry, so why not give it a try. And an Urchin background is the thing that immediately springs to mind for that combination. Probably someone who grew up in the sewers of Magnimar or something.

That said, plenty of cool option so far.

I plan to GM, but if I were a player, I would do a Varisian Street Performer Monk. Monk class because I want to stress-test the system and effective monks are hard to create. Varisian ancestry because it is a well-developed ethnic group in Golarion and I want to see how well the ancestry fits the ethnic. Street Performer background because it complements both monk and Varisian.

Well, the playtest adventure is split up I to modules. As best as I can tell, it's totally possible to rotate GMs between the segments. If you'd like to GM but you'd also like to be a player, then rotating isn't a bad idea.

Liberty's Edge

I'm GMing, but if I was to play, I'd probably do an Elf Noble Rogue as a duelist/scholar and arrange to have every Skill Trained, plus whatever Lore seems useful today via the Elf Ancestry Feat that gives you one skill a day.

Enjoy being a polymath genius and swashbuckler.

Some sort of monk multiclass, either barbarian, paladin or brewmaster, I mean alchemist. Haven't decided which yet.

Oh, yeah, of course, that's why I added the "or tries" clause, many magic items are only destroyed by special means (The One Ring, for example), it would just be a silly role-playing thing, I certainly would never seriously disrupt a campaign with these antics, just fun, the others stoping Trog from destroying the latest magic item they have found (at least trying, that could be fun, the party watching his known to them futility).

He should probably be a dwarf, to complete the cliche (well, at least old school, dwarves anti-magic one!).

I want to test the new paladin and see how it plays compared to the other classes, as it's been completely changed in mechanical theme from where it was in 3.x/PF1.

I want to see if the 'aggro' mechanic that replaced smite evil actually works, and if it still feels like a paladin if it's not dumping mass damage onto things to vanquish evil, but rather plops itself in front of squishy allies to protect them and whether or not that incentifies enemies to just avoid them all together.

If the result is the latter, I feel the class will be exceptionally boring, because its job is literally to sit there and be a deterant from enemies. If you move into the action and away from whomever you're trying to defend, then this class feature becomes useless. Conversely, if this class feature is a resource to the group, we may see more squishy allies being willing to jump into the fray if there's some real defense going on.

I also want to see if the new role in 'defender of the weak' rather than 'vanquisher of evil' does something to the class's identity, and whether or not it really feels like a paladin or if it serves better as a more generic knight class to complement the offensive builds designed for the fighter.

This is not meant to be indicative of the whole alignment debate thing, but rather an aside to see if the massive kind of damage a paladin would have with something like smite would otherwise break the new game's math (I don;t think it would, if it's tied to spell points and has its action cost balanced with other combat styles). This information would remain true in any alignment based scenario.

Grand Lodge

Elf Scholar Bard.

It's one of the first characters I ever played in PF and still a favourite. I'd love to see how well it plays out in the new edition.

Dwarf Monk. I don't know the backgrounds well enough to commit, but they're all kind of the same (+2 to two stats, one is floating, free lore skill).

Yes, have not heard enough of those since 2000, one of the cooler images for a Dwarven Monk is in the 3rd Ed Tome of Magic, a PrC for the Truenamer, cool.

My current Reign of Winter game has a Dwarf Monk (and former sailor...probably verging on pirate). He's fun, what with Cha 6 making him...distinctly unlikely to make friends. He makes a nice contrast with the fairly Charisma-heavy rest of the party.

Barring something catching my eye in the doc, I’m going to play a particularly cranky Halfing Druid with a merchant background. I’ll be kicking the tires on the downtime and exploration modes, and also looking for ways to combine and swap class abilities to create non-core classes.

A Cha-dumping monk, say it isn't so! Just kidding, I now really dig the idea of a pirate-monk; ha-cha your ass off the plank.

Seriously, imagine the general pirate gear, but this guy only fights with his barehands, neat.

Our MVP RPer from Hell's Rebels was the player with a 5 CHA Dwarven Swarm Monger Druid, who was in essence an insane homeless cat lady who hung out with all these incredibly smooth operators (rest of the Party was an Oracle, Bard, Eldritch Scion Magus, and Vigilante). She was a blast at all the fancy parties and similar you go to in that AP.

I'll be playing my tried and true Human Paladin from 1e. Basically, who I would be if I jumped into Golarion. He's from the town of Bellis in Andoran, and has trained in Lastwall. Giving him the Warrior background. (excited to see what Quick Repair feat does) I'm VERY excited to finally play a mechanically competent sword and board Paladin, taking damage and dishing it out while protecting my allies.

Also, that was not a challenge for everyone to bring out their anecdotes about Dwarf Monks! I am sure there are plenty.

Again, I mean all of this with humour and fun.

One of my first Pathfinder characters was a dwarf monk. I wanted him to be knowledgeable and capable in combat (which naturally meant to boost int as well as all the other monk stats). Boy was I surprised how poorly that worked out!

I wonder if it'll work out in PF2.

Ancestry: 1d8 ⇒ 7 Half-Orc
Background: 1d19 ⇒ 11 Laborer
Class: 1d12 ⇒ 1 Alchemist

Jani Shoreman the Half-Orc laborer alchemist.

Jani Shoreman worked near the docks for most of his young life. Running packages to and from ships as a young kid and moving heavy crates either bound for or just arrived from distant lands while he was a teenager.

While it was steady work it was also work that would chain him down to the nameless port town he was born in. He longed to board one of those boats and see the world. To do that he'd need a trade.

There was an apothecary who kept a shop near the docks. It was used as a healing house for people coming off ships or anyone who got into an accident along the docks. After being knocked silly after being blindsided by a beam, he awoke groggily on a cot in the shop. A poultice smelling of both honey and herbs was stuck to a gash on head.

As he tried to stand up a cranky old witch of a woman shoved him back down on the bed. "Don't try to stand up. I don't want to stick another one of those to your head after you fall down again." The elderly woman, who might have been quite a looker once upon a time, had a hard edge about her.

"Whaddya got stuck to my head?" Jani asked trying to regain his bearings and ascertain how long he'd been out.

"Just something to help it heal and keep the infection out. Don't take it off until tomorrow." She took a puff from a long pipe. "I've seen you running these streets for years without getting banged up enough to see me. Pretty lucky. I've seen almost everyone on that dock. Well, being as you're from the neighborhood and this is your first time in here I'll not charge ya. However," she takes another long drag at her pipe, "if you see anything interesting coming in or going out at the docks you let me know. Plants, rocks, or animals. I'm not asking for you to do any thievery, skulduggery, or any of that nonsense. I'll buy it from whomever owns it. You got me?"

Jani nods at the witch. While laying on the cot and getting his head right for the rest of the afternoon the young half-orc watched the woman go about her business. There seemed to be a lot more reading of books and measuring out phials of liquid than he guessed there would be in witchcraft. He also couldn't figure out where her familiar was hiding. The smells, both sweet and rotten, coming from her concoctions were fascinating. Bubbling glass containers over small flames along one workbench full of either potion or poison. "I didn't realize witchcraft was as involved as brewing."

The apothecary laughed, "Witchcraft?! Ha! No, this is alchemy. This is science. Not some cat-worshiping mumbo-jumbo. I can extract the essences of herbs and other items in nature to make things just as powerful of magic." She grabs a small clay pot lined with beeswax. "Now, watch this," and she throws a pinch into one of the flames and it popped in a large flash of light. "Imagine, boy, what would happen if this whole jar was tossed into a fire? Boom. Like one of those academy wizards."

"So, anyone could learn this?" Jani asked eagerly.

The alchemist gives the half-orc an appraising eye. "Only those who are bright... or maybe just lucky. Come back tomorrow night after closing. Bring a leather apron and leather gloves. We'll see how bright you are. Bright enough and I'll take you as an apprentice. Those stupid cauldrons are getting heavier every year and I could use the help. Pays better than the docks."

Nicely done, Gregg!

I just wanted to complain that for a brief moment you made me think it was coming out early and I got all excited! DISAPPOINTMENT!

My GM is doing a bunch of one-shots at different levels so I'll have an opportunity to try out a bunch of different concepts, but right now the concept I'm most excited about is my Superstitious Barbarian who's been experimented on by an evil something-or-other (maybe scientist, maybe witch doctor) to create an antimagic supersoldier.

That sounds fun. Would he also be anti-science as well as anti-magic? I imagine that background wouldn't entice one to see the local alchemist.

Her situation isn't really her code, it's just a fact of her existence; she would accept friendly magic if she was physically capable of doing so, but her body and spirit repels all magic whether she wants it to or not.

Kayla Ancestry Human: Background Blacksmith Class Fighter

Kayla grew up never knowing when to quit, her father was a Blacksmith for mighty knights of noble bearing and her mother a seamstress of great skill. In her youth Kayla would watch her father work the forge for hours, falling asleep to the steady strikes of his hammer upon the red hot steel.

In her teenage years Kayla took after her father and learned the art of smithing metal of all kinds, her first few attempts were pitiful, but like her father she never gave up. Smithing was a passion and under the firm hand of her father Kayla grew to love the art even more.

When she came of age Kayla was presented a mighty test by a noble of some standing, to smith for him a Blade of surpassing excellence in order to prove her skills as a smith and be granted the right to do business of her own. At the encouragement of her father Kayla agreed to the task, she was given a year and a day to present the blade, and Kayla decided that to do this she would need steel far above what her father had to work with. So she decided to set out on a journey to find such steel, to bring it back, and from it craft a blade the likes of which hasn't been seen before. Taking the gifts given by her family and friends, food and clothes for the journey, and a hefty Shield and Mace made by her father, the aspiring smith set out on a trial that would later define her life.

It took me some googling to figure out what you were talking about. The first wikipedia result for Jani was that it was actually a male name derived from John. The other was the summer solstice festival that involved wreath-making.

I would go with a human blacksmith Alchemist who I'll voice with a southern drawl. Maybe I'll multiclass fighter and have him be a swordy Alchemist.

I'll name him Duke Chugswick.

Grand Lodge

Goblin Scholar Bard, specializing in perform oratory.
His lore would be Goblinoids.
His downtime is giving lectures about Goblins: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
His name is Rugglesby.

Most likely Human Rogue, rogues have always had a pull on me despite being one of the least optimal classes in the game.
