South of a forbidding range of mountain peaks lies a land of boundless resources and untold opportunity. The Mwangi Expanse has been home to an untold diversity of cultures and peoples since time immemorial, hosting powerful, isolated city states that have often paid little attention to their neighbors. Yet the turning tides of fortune have begun to usher in changes that are rippling across the world. As a band of scholars from an ancient university venture north to aid a disaster-torn Avistan. A revolution-forged nation seeks powerful allies against foreign aggression. An undead god, once a symbol of hope to his declining nation, now grows jealous enough to turn on his self-proclaimed kin. Whether you are a diplomat seeking leverage from the most difficult of positions, a spy seeking the subtlest hint of danger from your surroundings, a guardian hoping to protect your home and people, or a warrior striking back at tyrants both native and foreign, this guide to the Mwangi Expanse offers you the ultimate resource to explore a realm of magic, monsters, and intrigue!

A joy to read

5/5

I love this thing. The lore for the different ethnic groups and ancestries in the Mwangi expanse is especially enjoyable to read. I really like the demon fighting orcs. Awesome flavor.

Whether you are running the Strength of Thousands adventure path (I also reccomend) or you want to run a campaign set in fantasy Africa, this book is a must have. Even if you don't want to do either of those things the art and lore in this book is interesting enough on its own that I believe it is worth having.

This is what a setting book should be

5/5

This is easily my favourite setting book and the only book in my collection that I've considered buying twice just to have a physical copy. The detailed information about the many different places and cultures in the region is well written and full of interesting adventure seeds, the art is brilliant, and the diverse cast of writers avoids the all-to-common RPG trope of "Europeans write about Africa, racism ensues". The region itself feels suitably diverse and varied as a result as well, and the people and cultures depicted feel real and believable.

Superb African-themed fantasy gazetteer

5/5

I bought this product because I didn't have any African-themed fantasy gazetteer in my collection. It is a superb product with incredibile art in particular. Very recommended.

A Strong Treatment of My Favorite Continent

5/5

There's a lot to like in this book: the content for the elves and dwarves, the demon-hunting orcs of Matakali, the Corsair Wars, Veridian. My only real complaint is that the new cities and locales introduced (Matakali, Cloudspire, etc) are completely ignored on the maps--it looks like 1st edition maps were reused, which is disappointing.

I would also have liked to see material at least alluding to the southern half of Garund, which has been a glaring oversight for years now. But these are minor quibbles and not enough to warrant losing a star.

I hope we get Akrivel from Age of Ashes on a map somehwere in this book. It would be nice to know exactly where it is. Maybe we'll even get a settlement stat block for it.

Info on the Ekujae nations is one of the biggest draws for me.

I expect you're both in luck. On stream when they were showing art of the peoples of the Mwangi, they included two Ekujae from Cult of Cinders (one was Nketiah, at least). I would hazard a guess that both the Ekujae and Akrivel will get at least an overview in it.

Wayfinders

I also remember Allie Bustion (I think it was her, at least?) talking...quite a while ago by now about all three of the Ekujae (plus the Song'o halflings, I think), so it's likely all of them get a spotlight of some sort.

Unsure about Akrivel though, haven't heard of that, but we might find out today!

Goloma and Shisk revealed on stream today; I LOVE how weird the Goloma are, and am a little bummed to see how human the Shisk are.

Still, very cool stuff ✨

The Goloma look pretty interesting, the Shisk aren’t what I expected I thought they were described to have had “bony wings”

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Just to let y'all know, the Goloma's boosts are +WIS +Free, while the Shisk's boosts were confirmed by Ron Lundeen on Discord are +INT +Free.

Still nothing on Gnolls, Anadi, or Grippli's boosts.

Where could one find the art for the shisk?

Please & thank you.

Minor correction: The Ekujae are one of three groups of elves. But yes, all three will be in the book.

These are really well chosen, I want to say, Gnoll is our first native STR/INT, Grippli seem naturally great for ranged builds and magic users, Conrasu are going to make for surprisingly good warriors which is pretty cool.

honestly everywhere i look i see good stuff here.

Gnolls making for killer Magi is not a choice I expected! I’m a huge Gnoll fan (first ever character was one), and I’m super surprised by this stat spread - makes me eager to see what their lore is like.

(I’m surprised not to see a +CON for carrion eaters!)

Yeah, given their senses and stamina, I totally would have gone for +Con and +Wis, and, given their racial reputation, a penalty to Charisma.

A bonus to Intelligence, now that's gonna be a big change, lore-wise, and I can't wait to see what's up with that! Gnolls have never been portrayed as anything like Dwarves, innovaters in craft or metalwork or architecture, or Elves, focused on arcana, so it's definitely an interesting choice.

These are definitely not gonna be your daddy's gnolls!

I’m SO curious to see what their culture will be like - especially in regards to faith. I love to play religious characters, and I’m really hoping for something unique here.

I did read that one of the 12 magic warriors was a gnoll and as a result gnolls are welcome in magambya. These racial bonuses are likely a reflection of this lore specifically. I'm guessing alot of the gnolls in Mwangi are based around Magambya, and are alot more bookish. Regardless, it will certainly be interesting.

Grand Lodge

I can't wait for this to come out.

I cannot wait for this to come out either! July can't come soon enough! I'm curious about the price..it's more expensive than any of the other Lost Omens books, is this the new price for all books in this series or is it just for this one?

Just want to know for budgeting purposes! I'm happy to pay more for a book of such high quality.

It's based on the page count. I believe this book is close to 300 pages long, so that's why it's more expensive VS other Lost Omens books, which averaged to be 128 pages.

Ooh, I did not know that, interesting!

Paizo has reflavored ghouls to be not just about carrion, but also ancient knowledge and lore, so it could be interesting to say that an offshoot of gnolls have a similar focus on ancient lore, maybe keeping records carved in bone.

Play a ghoul? Don't get your hopes up. They'd need to be releasing something like a giant book about the undead. Oh, they are? Well, they'd need to have hinted at undead ancestries and heritages in it. Oh, they also did that? ... I guess you should get your hopes up after all!

But, tying it back, it's really nice to see player options being opened up for things like gnolls and anandi, and to have more information about more of the world.

One could say they have a "hunger for knowledge"

I'll see myself out

I think they've got a good reason for not doing the "and" of and/or. Two physical boosts means the flex can go into the third, cementing them in "best martial". Looking forward to seeing the expanded gnoll lore, especially for the heritages!

Yeah, its kind of a first step to give everyone a heads up of exactly what is about to happen to your bank account. The shipping will happen a bit later.
