Must have for divine players and GM

5/5

While it looks like a cleric book at first sight this is way more.
Of course; clerics, inquisitors, oracles, warpriests and (anti)paladins wil benefit the most, but now you can also make a fighter a soldier of god by taking the sentinel class, or make a Desna rogue and gain access to the feats. The feats, traits, spells and boons make the difference between the gods a lot greater, witch also adds more flavor. In the corebook the weapon and domains where the only stats of a deity, but the fire domain didn't give a character more Asmodues feel, because a Sarenrea priest could take it to. With these Deity specific feats, boon etc. it can become a big deal witch you choose.

The 3 archetypes are all good, divine casters can go exalted, martials can take sentinel classes and everyone can go evangelist.

Now the big deal for me:
As a GM you can at so much flavor:
Example: giving the bad guys in your torture chamber Zon-Kuthon feats, prestige classes and spells.

Love this book.

Ring Side Report- RPG Review of Inner Sea Gods

4/5

Originally posted at www.throatpunchgames.com, a new idea everyday!

Product- Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Gods
Producer-Paizo
System-Pathfinder
Price-~$30
TL; DR-If you want to know about the main Golarion gods, get this book. 90%

Basics- Inner Sea Gods is the first hard cover book discussing Golarion in a long time from Paizo, and as the name suggests, it focuses on the gods of the inner sea region. Chapter one discusses the big 20-the top gods of the setting. Each god gets a few pages discussing important stats for this god and prestige classes for characters of this god, the gods beliefs, the priesthood, the church, temples and shrines, a priest's role in the world, how adventures see the god, clothing of worshipers, holy texts, holidays, aphorisms, relations between religions, the gods realm, planar allies, and a sidebar for characters of this god for different items, archetypes and character options. Each god also gets a picture of a worshiper and the god itself. After the main deities' chapter, the second string of deities gets a chapter with each deity getting half a page followed by a section on race specific pantheons. Next is a chapter on character options including three new prestige classes, feats, traits, domains spells, and items. The book finishes with new monsters and quick stat tables on the gods.

Theme or fluff- I liked and didn't like this one. What was here was great, but what wasn't was what really made this disappointing. The first chapter of the book is amazing! The write up on each god is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn about the gods of this world. However, I would have gladly traded any items and spells in this book for more page space on the second string deities. That was what I really wanted from this book. Gods like Besmara already have a deity write up that could have been copy/pasted from the Adventure Paths (AP) right in this book! And that's the assumed default god of the second highest selling AP! Heck, some gods don't even get the half page as some race deities get less than a paragraph in the pantheons. Now, I know this is kind of nit-picking as +90% of players will pick a main god and use that, but those minor god details are important to me. 4/5

Mechanics or Crunch-This was done well even if I wanted more fluff in the book. Instead of making an ungodly (ha puns!) number of different prestige classes, Paizo made three, BUT each god gives different powers depending on the god the character serves. That right there, along with CMB/CMD, is the smartest thing Paizo has added to the 3.X system! I don't need a book with three classes per god (basically the standard Paizo three: skill monkey, fighter, and caster); I can have two pages explaining each class and 1/2 a page per god giving each god's specific powers for those three. That frees up page space that was much better used and solved a problem in a smart way. The feats, items, monsters, and powers provided by the book are also well done too. Like any large book, there are winners and losers for all the options provided, but overall it's not bad. I think the alters and item are far overpriced for the bonus you get though. As above, since the non-core gods don't get much more than half a page, you can't out of the box play the new prestige classes with the obscured gods. But, those are minor problems. 4.5/5

Execution- It's not a bad book. I might have problems with content, but Paizo knows how to really put a bunch in each book. The art helps keep the reader from getting bored since you are in essence reading at least 150 pages of fake theology textbook. Item, spell, power, class layout is as great as ever. I find nothing to complain about here. 5/5

Summary- If you play Pathfinder and are a cleric, then this book is a no brainer. If you run a Pathfinder game and will use ANY gods at all, then this book is a no brainer. I have my problems with what didn't make the cut for this book as opposed to what did. However, if you are the vast majority of people out there who pretend to worship some fantasy god in this system, then this book is for you. If you want to worship some obscure god, you have a bit of work on your hands. Since I love clerics in my 3.5 games, this a well done book I'm glad is part of my collection but not completely what I wanted. 90%

Great for those interested in the core deities

4/5

I've posted a complete review on my blog, The Triangular Room.

I think Inner Sea Gods is a great addition to my Pathfinder collection. While a fair amount of the content is recycled from previous products, it’s really fantastic to have everything in one place, especially in such a beautiful, well-designed volume. I’d consider it a must-buy for fans of the core Golarion deities. For those looking for more options related to the non-core deities, this title is probably not going to help you a great deal.

Finally got one

5/5

I'm a big fan of giving back story to the world around us, and this helps. Added in the fact it is Reynolds best covers, and the interior matched it was just outstanding. I do agree some of this is a repeat, but I also think this may be one of those that we will see have an update. Maybe new gods added, some deaths, feats better explained, etc. Needs work, but I still love it. Worth the buy.

Will there be PRCs for Ragathiel's worshippers?

Liberty's Edge

Paladin of Ragathiel with an Oath of Vengeance works pretty well.

I cannot wait for this book. I feel this book is far overdue but I am delighted it gets to see the light of day.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Isn't there already a book on gods and such? Though this one is bigger and hardcover. I do hope it's good! I was really disappointed that Gods and Deities was basically just a repeat of the Inner Sea World guide.

If you mean Gods and Magic...that came out in the 3.5 era (2008), so I'd say it's long past time we got an update, much like Inner Sea World Guide (2011) was an update on the 3.5 Campaign Setting book (2008) for Golarion. Now we just need an updated version of The Great Beyond: A Guide to the Multiverse (2009), which was also back in 3.5. That's twice as big. AT LEAST.

Agreed, we do need an updated version of the great beyond, hopefully it will be a hardcover book as well.

I for one am excited about this book and I love the cover!

Sorry if I missed that answer, but will there be stats blocks for the gods?
Like CR 26 to 30 avatars of the gods.

Highly doubtful. That is what they have Heralds for.

No.

A quick and to the point answer. Thanks!

A pity though.

So those heralds, what are they? Mortal champions of the gods? Like the Chosen in Forgotten Realms? And so do we have heralds in this book?

Thanks.

The heralds are CR 15 unique outsiders who function as emissaries of the gods - each AP-issue with a deity-article has also had a herald in its bestiary section (except for the very first one, #2, which did not have an article about Desna's herald The Night Monarch [I'm guessing they hadn't decided if this was a thing yet] - but it was detailed in a later instalment of the Rise of the Runelords instead).

(And come to think of it, I think one or two of the heralds may be of different monster-types than Outsider. Urgathoa's herald Mother's Maw is an Undead, and I think one or two of them has a construct.)

Torag's might be listed as a Construct. I don't recall right off hand & don't have my copy available to check.

One of Pharasma's heralds is basically the ghost of Aroden.

CR 15 huh? It seems somewhat low for a God's rep.
Thanks for the replies.

Thanks for the replies.

They're all (at least supposed to be) 18 HD or less so a cleric can summon them with Greater Planar Ally. The (relatively) low CR is by design, for playability.

Lissala's herald has its stats listed in a PFS scenario.

Alright so I know that it doesn't have them but I would like to once again express my desire for stat blocks for the gods, that is all (yes I know they've said we're never getting them, but I must try)

He's in the Pharasma write-up in Trial of the Beast, the second book of the Carrion Crown AP. His name is Echo of Lost Divinity.

For every person who wants stats, there's two or three who don't, and a Paizonian who doesn't want to have to even attempt to crunch the numbers to build those statblocks.

He's not actually her herald, just a planar ally. Steward of the Skein is Pharasma's true herald.

It was originally statted up in Shattered Star.

Just want to add that I would love to see an equivalent of the Celestial Obedience feat for greater gods. Adding divine power to characters who wouldn´t normally have them is a great way to make it feel unique.

Like, "Deific Obedience"?

The only problem I see with that is that if every major god as one unique, specific ritual that worshipers are supposed to undertake, it'll make the god's faith seem oversimplified and homogenized. It works for the Empyreal lords and Demon lords, because they are demigods with small cults based around them.

The Scarred Lands setting had a number of 'invocations' for each of the major gods, so that if one followed Tanil, goddess of archery, the hunt and music, one could spend a round 'invoking' her and get a +1 bonus to a single bow shot (with one invocation) or perform music check (with another) or survival check (with a third). Some of them allowed multiple rounds of invocation to get larger bonuses.

It was a much smaller sort of thing than the obeisance (and didn't require a feat), but kind of a neat way for non-clerics to get a small benefit (that, thanks to action economy, wasn't likely to often affect combat).

Following that theme, if the 'big 20' gods had obeisances, they might have a few each, based on their 'spheres of influence.' So a worshipper of Urgathoa might have one related to disease (bonus to resist the effects of disease on oneself if able to make the appropriate obeisance), one related to undeath (bonus to saves to make a negative energy level go away, or to CL when animating undead) and one related to gluttony (ignore penalties for hunger, or the ability to devour an abnormal amount of food and have it count for multiple days, eating seven days worth of 'meals' from a slain horse and then not having to eat for a week, or something).

Basing it off of 'spheres of influence' instead of Domains would, IMO, much more 'personalize it.' So, for the example above, Urgathoa wouldn't have any obeisance related to her Strength or War or Evil domains, because, honestly, Urgathoa has *nothing* to do with those Domains, they just sort of got strapped on. (Just as seven of the 'big 20' gods are Lawful, but only one, Abadar, is an actual god *of* law.)

Similarly, Abadar would have obediences related to cities, wealth, merchants and law, and nothing at all to do with Earth, Nobility, Protection or Travel. (Instead of having some deliberately flavorless sort of 'Protection' obedience that he'd have to share with Nethys, Shelyn and Torag, who are all, thematically and aesthetically, quite different sorts of gods.)

I would love to see a feat that grants domain spells as spell powers and for anyone not just divine casters.

I would love to see ways for classes to get spells added to there spell list that fit like fire spells for a flame oracle, minor healing spells and other cleric spells like holysmite, holy aura, and deathward to a celestial bloodline sorcerer. I would like to see more positive energy spells for necromancers and maybe some actual good subtype spells for the school of necromancy.

The number of new spells that get added all the time with the cold, fire, etc. descriptor could open up multiple options, such as a feat that allows one to add a certain number of spells of a thematic descriptor (such as a Fire oracle or Fire domain cleric or Fire specialist wizard being able to add X number of spells or levels of spells with the fire descriptor from other class lists), or a feat that allows one to adapt a number of current spells to that descriptor (such as tweaking sonic burst to a fire spell, for a Fire Domain cleric, or burning hands and burning gaze to cold spells, for a Winter Witch).

Definitely. The school of 'life and death' is a bit overly death-focused, currently, and adding a bunch of life-themed spells could help to swing it back into a more PC / PFS / 'no evil PCs' friendly option.

Well not just fire but earth, water, air, cold, electricity, plant, animal, etc. but you know what I am talking about Set.

The school of life and death is very death heavy and undeath heavy as well:(

I literally JUST found out about this and I'm super stoked. I'm not a huge fanof the Golarion pantheon but I alwasy enjoy reading all the setting info and backstory.

Wow almost 300 deities that we get domain information, favored weapons, etc. with that many other deities mention I hope we will get some from Castrovel, Akiton, and more. Also some Deities for( and that are) non-core races like catfolk, gripli, etc..

I continue to be uber excited. I'm so very much looking forward to those prestige classes!

I am excited about this book, though I still wish that it wasn't just on the Inner Sea Deities. I would have loved to get some more information on the Tian Xia deities as well. Most of them only have like a few paragraphs of write up.

I guess we'll just have to hope that there will be a hardcover on non-inner sea deities ;)

I understand that this book is called "Inner Sea Gods" and is about Golarion, but are the prestige classes applicable to other settings, or are they purely focused on the Inner Sea deities? For instance, can I make the "Champion of Sarenrae" or whatever it's going to be called a "Champion of Pelor"?

I got the impression that you can mod the prestige class for whatever diety you worship. So my guess would be yes

I hope were are still getting reprints of all 20 of the core deities' heralds.

I want this book!

any new gods

While the book will focus mostly on the core 20, we will get information for nearly 300 deities in the campaign setting. So yeah I am sure will get some new ones;)
