First Look at Pathfinder Remastered Covers

Thursday, April 27, 2023

This morning, at the annual GAMA EXPO game industry trade show, Paizo publisher Erik Mona unveiled the sketches of the just-announced Pathfinder Player Core and Pathfinder GM Core hardcovers to hobby game retailers and distributors. We will update the product pages for the new books when the final full-color pieces arrive in the coming weeks, but Pathfinder cover artist Wayne Reynolds’s illustrations have us so excited we couldn’t wait to show them off to you in all their glory.

Receiving a new cover sketch from Wayne is one of the true highlights of life behind the scenes at Paizo. Whenever they arrive, the creative staff gathers around to marvel at their beauty and pick out all the fun little details Wayne always adds above and beyond the simple descriptions we provide him. Wayne Reynolds has been one of the most important contributors to Pathfinder since the very beginning, and it’s a pity that his pencil sketches are not often seen outside the building.

So, we decided to change that this time around—not just by showing off his sketches here on the blog, but also on your own game tables.

Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Player Core Pathfinder Second Edition GM Core Sketch Cover

For the first time, we’re bringing Wayne’s sketches to your game table with the Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Project. This November, in addition to the standard fully painted covers for the Pathfinder Player Core and Pathfinder GM Core, we’ll also be offering unique Sketch Cover editions of the rulebooks, only with a catch.

For the first four months of their release, Pathfinder Sketch Cover versions of the new core rulebooks will be available EXCLUSIVELY at hobby retailers worldwide. We will not be offering these editions to online or bookstore retailers, ever! We also do not intend to reprint these editions beyond our modest initial print run. We’ll retain a small number to sell on paizo.com after the 120-day exclusivity period for folks who do not have access to a local game store, but these special editions are intended to support our local game store partners who have been such a big part of Pathfinder’s success since the very beginning. We urge you to communicate your interest in these special books to your local store, so that they can be sure to stock appropriately.

Lastly, take another look at those cover sketches. Each debuts a brand new type of official Pathfinder dragon that will appear in March 2024’s Pathfinder Monster Core. Wayne developed the dragons from concept art by Paizo’s very own in-house concept artist, Kent Hamilton.

Very soon, we’ll return here to show off some of Kent’s preliminary dragon concept designs and learn a bit more about Pathfinder’s new core dragons!

Those sketched covers are gorgeous!!

- Will the normal, non-sketch covers be part of the PFS2 core rules subscription?
- Will the sketch-covers include some form of PDF redemption since they're only available in-store?

For those also wondering, yes, that's Runelord Xanderghul on the mirage dragon for the GM Core. We've put a runelord and their dragon buddy on the previous two GM books, after all.
Just four more GM books to go before you run out of options!

Can't wait for Sorshen. ;) Hopefully she'll have one of those magnificent Hallowed Lynx with her. :p

I like black and white.

Also supporting brick and mortar.

Cool.

I kinda like the black & white look. I much prefer these over the special edition covers.

Will the new core dragons include lovable and wholesome dragons and also sadistic and cruel dragons, like how chromatic and metallic dragons were?

Could any of the new dragons out-wholesome the lovable brass boi? Or out-malice the cruel red?

1) Yes to both, I suspect and hope.

2) The existing dragons in 2nd edition aren't vanishing from the game. You can still use them in your games in the remastered rules. And we'll continue to have them play roles in Golarion in remastered adventures... but that's a "later and down the line" goal for us. We want to put some of our new dragons front and center in the Monster Core to build some of our own scaly friends and foes!

Huh, remastered adventures confirmed

Also, *only* remastered adventures? So new adventures are never going to have a show dragons again?

Glad you have reasons to suspect we will be getting different personalities for the new dragons though

We'll have more to talk about upcoming adventures at Paizocon, but adventures have always been a place where we explore things and present monsters beyond those in the currently available monster books.

The black and white is stark and distinctive. It is bound to catch eyes on the shelves. personally, I like it!

Just got asked by the future Mrs. Morris if I was getting the B&W versions.

Will there be a B&W version of the second Player's book? I'd hate to have a mixed set.

Oh wow that's a lot sooner than even I was willing to believe. Looks nice~. (For some reason I was expecting to see a 4th Iconic there; even the current CRB has 3!)

Ummm… there are 4 iconics on that cover; (left to right) Feiya, Harsk, Kyra, and Merisiel.

Will the sketch wrap around to the spine? Or will the spine remain the white and black (or dark green?) as shown in these images?

Given that books spend most of their lives with just the spine showing, there have been a number of books I've been swayed to buy just for the excellent spine!

Oh! I think I vaguely saw him at first and then got lost in the sauce. ^ ^'

As much as I like the look of the sketches, I'll most likely want to finally show to my players the sight of Xanderghul, fashionably late, in all his glorious, eye-blasting colour!

Speaking of, I'm torn between him having made contingency plans for his own death, or of such an utter certainty that it would be unnecessary, that he's just rhetorically asking the rulers of the afterlife if they seriously know who he is.

Pretty good!

Is by any chance the front ( the dragon / character ) embossed ( is this the right term? )?

So with all the cool art, I really have got to ask...

Paizo, can we please get a Paizo Art Collection Calendar (maybe for 2024?) at some point? *puppy eyes*

Good idea, but considering the covers.... how about a coloring book?

Obviously there are going to be new Runelords!

OMG! That's so cool! The truth is, PF2.5 is going to have amazing book covers. It's pretty and original. I hope speculators don't start buying these, as always happens with limited editions...

Those covers are amazing! If they're available for the pocket editions I'll be so happy, because if they're not I'll be begrudgingly buying the full-size books...

Stay tuned, for now! ;-)

Question, with updated spells could we possibly get something like DnD’s version of prestidigation

That is, a cantrip that creates “harmless sensory effects” like sparkles or creating fake rain or making my character’s eyes glow or change color, or making something smell like roses or freshly baked pie

Stuff that would be amazing for role play, and especially for bards wanting to add theatrical effects to their performances, but otherwise doesn’t have mechanical effect

I get pathfinder is very tight with its rules, but I feel there should be things that allow for pure roleplay and flavor.

Oh, I want those so bad, but as a Subscription option :(
I'm not from the US, and there's no LGS who sells Paizo books, while I'm still able to have subscription deliveries via proxies.

What's wrong with the PF2 version?

You can’t create harmless sensory effects like sparkles or floral scents or fake rain appearing around you in a 5x5 space while you perform a sad song

Ye should probably take deep breaths, have a break, play nice video games and remember that its not big deal and that not every question needs direct answer from devs ^_^;

What did your GM say when you asked her if you could do that? This seems like a perfect "ask your GM" question.

And if you really need developer input on it, check out the First Rule. I'm not sure what more they could say about it than that.

I love the look of that Mirage dragon. So pretty! (Though part of me realizes that it will probably be more likely for us to see the diabolic dragon, as adversaries get more play than allies.)

But will Luis Loza or James Jacobs answer in those other threads?

Maybe. Answering questions here isn't the focus of our jobs, and we're VERY busy right now actually making the products, which in many cases are either not yet complete, or (in my case) products we're not actually working on directly.

We'll have much more to say at Paizocon in about a month, but for now, patience is an important thing to foster.

In my specific case, I'm the creative director for the Narrative team, and as such my focus is on the adventures, not the rulebooks or lore, so I'm not the right person to ask in the first place, honestly, and I'm wary about answering what I do know because it's not my place to do that publicly.

Would you be able to at least confirm that...

This is a thread about the new, FLGS-exclusive book covers. If you want to discuss new cantrips, you're better off in your (multitude of) other threads where you have brought up the same question.

And you just got what is known as a "soft no". That's a social signal that the person isn't going to agree to your request, but is trying to soften the answer by not being brutally direct with the 'no'. If you keep asking the same or closely related requests, it is likely to annoy them instead of wanting to answer your future questions.

You really shouldn't keep asking a question that you have already gotten the answer for. Just because you didn't like the answer you got doesn't mean that asking it again is going to change anything.

The game devs are 1) busy, and 2) keeping their secrets for a while because that is just good business practice.
