The ORC Alliance Grows

Open RPG logo over-layed over an image of pathfinder champion Seelah leading a battle

Over the course of the last week, more than 1,500 tabletop RPG publishers, from household names going back to the dawn of the hobby to single proprietors just starting out with their first digital release, have joined together to pledge their support for the development of a universal system-neutral open license that provides a legal “safe harbor” for sharing rules mechanics and encourages innovation and collaboration in the tabletop gaming space.

The alliance is gathered. Work has begun.

It would take too long to list all the companies behind the ORC license effort, but we thought you might be interested to see a few of the organizations already pledged toward this common goal. We are honored to be allied with them, as well as with the equally important participating publishers too numerous to list here. Each is crucial to the effort’s success. The list below is but a representative sample of participating publishers from a huge variety of market segments with a huge variety of perspectives. But we all agree on one thing.

Mongoose?! Oh the irony... they're so tight-fisted with the Traveller rules. I have to use Cepheus on FoundryVTT :(

WOW! Now that is a lineup I am awed by. And it's not even everybody! Keep up the good work and I wish you all the best. You're keeping the spirit alive!

How sad.
Well at least they have their loyal fanbase.

No Darrington Press - YET. Almost certain to have contracts locking them in until end of season.

Darrington Press isn't the same as CR. Tal'Dorei Reborn is 5e compatible but not printed under the D&D brand. I'd be shocked if they were foolish enough to lock it in with some exclusive license*.

*Especially because they didn't even get to use the D&D brand on it!

Well, that covers every publisher, apart from WotC itself, that I regularly purchase physical stuff from!

I really wish we could see the whole list. For instance, I don't see Drop Dead Studios on there - but really wish I did. I don't know if they HAVE officially expressed support - I just hope they do - and not knowing is uncomfortable.. :-)

Disappointed that Critical Role and MCDM haven't joined. Listening to Matt Collvilles last Twitch it's doubtful he will join.

I'm glad to see that ORC is getting bigger.

Hope to see more grow on this list.

We need to send WOTC a message they have ruined DND.

Like others have posted, the Darrington crew almost certainly have metaphorical - and perhaps literal - guns to their head. Hasbro will want them to continue to promote the D&D brand, and are certain to face major repercussions if they just cut out and run in the middle of a campaign.

If Matt's been smart (and I hope he has), any such agreements will only last to the end of the Bell's Hells campaign.

Also, I am one of those (very minor) OGL publishers, but I haven't gotten any emails yet. Did I mess it up? Or haven't there been any?

Lets keep it up. Let Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro know that imagination has no license.

I keep expecting to see Evil Hat on these lists, and then remembering their content is already under the Creative Commons.

I guess this stuff's old hat to them.

You may have missed it, check your Trash? I got one about two hours ago - did you sign up - I think I followed a link from the original blogpost announcing the ORC licence.

They have an incredible year ahead of them, too - delivering Apocalypse Keys, crowdfunding Girl by Moonlight, and a whole bunch of other stuff - and are well worth a look for non-d20 gaming.

Excited to see what the ORC will bring to the TTRPG community. Let's hope that the OGL 1.0a revocation won't hold and so that both OGL 1.0a and ORC may at one point stand alongside eachother to protect the community. :)

Also disappointed to see that Critical Role as the biggest TTRPG streamer with its publishing company Darrington Press still have not publicly joined the effort, despite thousands of other publishers having done so. :(

I mean, they probably have a legal quagmire on their hands dealing with this as is. I'm betting they do support it, they just legally can't do anything about it until their contracts with WotC/Hasbro have ended.

I keep trying to tell people this. CR probably has a legal quagmire to wade through before they can publicly say or do anything more than they already have. Like you, my hope is that their current advertising contract with WotC/Hasbro for DND Beyond only lasts until the end of Campaign 3 and after that they'll throw their full support (and by extension that of their fan base) behind it.

And if they don't, though I love them, I have my torch and pitchfork prepared.

I want to point out that

1) They may have already signed on, but requested that their name be kept out of announcements such as this to avoid legal issues.
2) Even if they don't sign on, that's not really going to change much. The ORC would still go through. CR and Darrington Press just wouldn't get to offer their input on its language.

Of course, they would bring with them the basically automatic support of their fanbase, but I don't know if that's really going to affect much.

Probably spelled out on some kind of time basis rather than something as easy to change as a campaign.

Unless the campaign really are scripted enough that they can guarantee a certain number of episodes.

An absolute who's who list of the gaming industry is in on this. Let's make history!

Horizon Hunters

I like how both Fantasy Grounds and Roll20 also jumped onto this train, which when combined with Foundry who's been supporting Paizo from the beginning, basically means all the major VTT providers are now aligned.

I don't think they're going to stop working with WotC either, but this means their legal teams feel it's important for their survival/prosperity that they be seen on the side of the ORC even if it means offending the alghollthu, and that really says something.

So EN Publishing joins too, good. I like their pseudo-D6 WOIN system quite a lot.

Though why I learn of it here first instead of their main turf (ENWorld) is a mystery...

I have been waiting for Girl by Moonlight.

Also, a name from the list that took me off-guard was Nord Games. I keep forgetting that they made game content. I worked for them for a while in one of their brick and mortar stores in a dying mall. That job helped me out when I was in a rough patch. Too bad the store had to close and not just move elsewhere in town.
