The captive answers Vildran fervently "The Sin of Steel is our patron, he who bears the jagged edge. You'll submit yourselves in time. None of you will escape his caress." He takes in Autumn's pronouncement relatively stoically, responding "They go early. Others will replace them." He licks his lips, seemingly most bothered by the last statement - that the canine creature is dead as well.

Okay, I have to ask. It sounded like there were a lot of voices in that tent you came out of. It's not just a tent, right?

Curious Vildran remains curious and hopes that their captive tolerates his questions a little longer.

Autumn steps back into the shadows, allowing Vildran to take the lead in questioning, but without much hope. She gently tugs on San’s arm and quietly whispers to him out of earshot. Cast Message

“I don’t think threatening will work. But if we knock him out again, we can try again with a sweeter approach. Just me, though. It won’t work if he sees anyone else.”

The idea is Illusory Disguise + Charm. Unfortunately, this plan would mean that Autumn monopolizes all the action. (Note that I'm happy to let Vildran keep running the show while it produces results.)

Perhaps growing a little cocky as Vildran asks his questions, the captive cackles "There are many of us, and many more coming. Far more than that tent can hold. Submit yourselves to the Sin of Steel, and you'll soon understand. If not you'd do well to keep your noses out of matters far greater than yourselves."

Up to you how you'd like to proceed.

San nods to Autumn and her suggestion. Moving to implement it, "This guy is obviously insane... Lets be done with him." With that he steps up and punches him to knock him out again.

Rubbing his knuckles, "This is a frustrating endeavor... I can drag him to a different location so it looks like we were going to ditch him an you can wake him up there?"

Have Bastiano and Sidonie as bodyguards while Vildran and San go back to Elsie's. See if she knows anything this Sin of Steel. Or to the Thessalonian ship to let them know about Meitremar and the rituals. That way Autumn can have her "one-on-one" and we aren't just twiddling our thumbs.

Autumn nods in agreement with San. “You said there are some hills with enough scrub for concealment? Let’s take him there,” she says, eager to get out of the frigid water. She’s the first one out of the tunnel, leaving the heavy lifting/dragging to the others, and immediately starts wringing out her clothes, and then changing into a drier set. Once the man is deposited in a suitable location, she searches him thoroughly, removing any weapons or other items of interest and handing them to the others for safekeeping.

“It’s best if you’re not all hanging around,” the sorceress cautions as she thinks through her ruse, looking pointedly at the clumsy wizard—he’s as likely as not to step on a stick and alert the entire world to his presence. “My plan won’t work if he recognizes any of you. Bastiano can stay—his darkvision will be helpful—and maybe Sidonie too, just in case. But you need to hide a good distance away.”

With her own comfort in mind—and knowing that San’s hefty punch would keep the man unconscious for a while—Autumn starts a small fire to warm and dry herself further. Only when she’s comfortable and confident that she won’t be betrayed by chattering teeth does she cast her spells, beginning with an illusion to disguise herself as an ordinary villager. The tattoo on her forearm is gone, replaced by a large, rust-colored bruise.
Cast Illusory Disguise. Deception +7+4.

Then, with a deep breath, she tries to shake the still bound man awake. “Please, please be alive,” she beseeches in an anxious, mousy voice.
As soon as the man awakes, she’ll subtly cast Charm (Will save DC 17). If he succeeds on his save, she’ll cast it again.

"Ugh!" The robed fellow slumps over after taking another blow from San. You drag him out of the tunnel and into the rolling hillocks to the south-east. By this points its well and truly night. A thin cover of clouds obscures the moon and makes any significant trekking an awkward endeavor (unless you bring a light out with you), however you don't need to go far to be hidden from view from the town, Stonehome and Rusthenge.

Autumn's search of the fellow uncovers his rusty, jagged knifes (four of them) and that he's wearing some worn leathers under his robe. She finds precious little else. Either he's something of an ascetic or his personal possessions are elsewhere. Meanwhile Bastiano and Sidonie are able to help with the fire, before heading off to hide.

From this point onward, I assume the rest of you are heading into town, but let me know where you're going. Wherever you end up going, you may meet a new friend there :)
---

A little shaking from a freshly disguised Autumn is enough to pull the man back to consciousness. He groans as he orients himself, Sidonie's spell wrapping around him before he can really get his bearings. He ends up looking up at her and uttering "Where? How?"

@San & Vildran: Feel free to take as many or as few of the rusty knives with you; Sidonie can take the rest.

“Thank the gods you’re alive!” Autumn exhales in a relieved voice. “Don’t worry, you’re safe now,” she murmurs gently, trying to reassure the man. “I’ll just untie you, and then I’ll take you to Stonehome—the clerics there will be able to heal you.” While she plays the role of a kindly do-gooder passerby, she keeps her eyes and ears alert for the man’s reaction to key tidbits dropped here and there, such as the mention of going to Stonehome, or the rusty bruise forged on her arm, visible in the flickering firelight.

“These knots are so tight!” she apologizes with childlike innocence. “Please be patient,” she requests while continuing to fumble weakly with the knots. Every now and then she blinks and wipes her brow, as if slightly feverish, or grimaces, as if aching from some undisclosed pain. “Who did this to you anyway? Why did they tie you up and leave you here?” A calculated note of sympathetic indignation creeps into her voice.

If needed, Sense Motive +4. She will actually untie his hands and feet to free him, but it will just take a while (to keep the conversation going). I’m hoping that alone will further improve his attitude to her, but if needed she has Diplomacy +7.

Once the group has picked their spot to dump the captive, he begins making his way back to town with San. Vildran is still mulling over what they've seen on this night, and he rambles out loud about it to San.

Someone else has to know that they are here, at the spires. Maybe the gorumites?

He scratches his head. He has to get this out before they return to Elsies. It's certainly too much for regular townsfolk to be burdened with.

"That's possible... maybe the Thessalonians will have some idea. That tent was obviously some kind of magical contrivance. Who knows if it has to be set up for the inside space to be livable. It could be all the crazies were inside there while Meitremar maintained some persona like our favorite con-artist does." At the last comment San gestures back towards where they left Autumn. "He could have arrived on that ship and made his way here to set it up to let the others out. At least it seems the town at large isn't involved in whatever this conspiracy is. Either that or we're a really bad judge of character."

With Autumn:
The fellow seems reassured by Autumn's treatment until she mentions going to Stonehome, at which point he eases himself up "No. You were very kind to me, but I have to get back." He eyes the bruise on her arm while she works on the ropes tying his arms, before licking his lips and saying "You are... one of them then? A servant of Stonehome's disciples? You are... lucky."

At her last question he adds "A group of foreigners did this. Be wary if you see them, for they are violent killers who would undoubtedly try to harm you." He describes, poorly, the appearances of the party to her.

In town:
The town is fairly quiet as you walk its one street back westward to Elsie's. A few candles can be seen in windows, but it seems like the kind of place where people start going to bed with sundown. Ahead, you see Elsie's has a small lantern out, helping to guide you back to its door.

Morga you're on deck. Since you were asking around for these outsiders from Sandpoint, you would have heard they were staying at Elsie's and would likely be back there again tonight. Up to you if you're inside or outside, or if you overheard their conversation. Jump in whenever you're ready and it feels right. “Lucky?” Autumn seems genuinely confused by the odd compliment, and follows the man’s gaze to her bruise. “I … sorry, I don’t understand. Why would I be lucky?”

She shudders when the man describes his vicious attackers, and even stops to cover her face, so overcome with emotion is this poor delicate girl. “How utterly horrible! But are you sure you’ll be okay, not seeking help from a cleric? You’re still in really rough shape.” She seems worried and scared, but eventually musters up the courage to volunteer some aid, such as it is. “May ... maybe I should go with you to wherever you’re going. I mean, I won’t be much help if your attackers show up again … but at least you won’t be alone.” She chews her lip nervously, almost as if she immediately regrets the overture, while continuing to struggle with the knots. “Where do you have to get back to anyway? I mean, you’re not from Iron Harbor, and I don’t know what business could be so urgent that you’d have to risk your health like that.”

Sure Sidonie and Bastiano were there incase he gets ideas of escape or harm, and they did take all his weapons away. "I'm sure she'll be fine. I am curious to know what she learns though. As Vildran and San approach Elsie's, the door cracks open and a head peeks out to look around. The light of the lantern reveals the face of a dwarf woman. With the shadows cast from the lantern on the stoop, it's understandable if they don't recognize her right away. With her darkvision, though, she's able to spot them before they've reached the light. She raises a hand in greeting, but waits until they're closer to speak. "Hello. I didn't expect to come across more folks from Sandpoint here, but it's good you've come. Remember me? Morga Blackhammer, from the Cathedral?"

Up close, the guys can see that it is indeed Morga, a young dwarf who is as plain as dirt with skin, hair, and eyes to match. She's dressed simply, at least on the surface, though the lantern light catches a sliver of a gleam of metal armor under her cloak.

"I heard there were more outsiders from Sandpoint poking around town, so I asked around until I learned you were staying here. Mind if I spend the evening with you? Catch up on what's going on at home?" There's a slight bit of emphasis on that last question, as if that's not really what she means.

San strains to see into the doorway as it cracks open. More than a little surprised that anyone else would be out this time of night. At least this one seems friendly. As the stranger greets them he searches his memory for a dwarf he's supposed to remember. He moves to return the greeting but stumbles a bit as the wound in his leg reminds him that it still exists. Recovering, he asks, "Morga? Like the girl I used to watch while her parents worked? Has it been that long? What are you doing here? He lets the question linger as he ushers everyone inside the shop. "So you were looking for us? I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to stay." He looks for Elsie to confirm his guess.

Vildran is glad San speaks first, as he strains to remember Morga (and he's generally bad with names as well). Then he further remembers how she helped him after one of his mishaps, and he lets loose a sheepish chuckle, rubbing the back of his head nervously. Of course, at the same time his antennae hunch down on his head.

Oh... I strained my leg that one time on an archaeology "expedition" and you healed it. Silly really. Yes, I think we have room... on the floor of Elsie's shop.

He winces as he says it. They move inside to get comfortable before continuing.

Oh, in case you forgot, I'm Vildran. I am a visiting academic in sandpoint. So, what has gone on in Sandpoint since we left?

"Lucky to be, ah, working for those, ah, warriors." It's obvious the man meant lucky in some other context, but he quickly continues "I need no aid. I will return to my brothers and sisters. You are welcome... to come with me. I am certain they would like to meet you. We are working on an excavation at a nearby archaeological site. We have medical supplies there." He grows more confident as he considers this, saying again "Yes, come with me."

At Elsie's:
With Morga holding the door open, you can smell the stew wafting out from within. Peering through the doorway you can see the table is set, and you hear Elsie saying "Is that them? They're back awful late. Tell them to come on in if you would Morga. More the merrier. And there's enough stew for all."

"The long and short of it is that there was a guard with weird bruises washed up on shore at Sandpoint. He was able to tell us enough that this priestess, Ordwi, he was guarding was in danger. Our rag-tag group of volunteers decided to venture off and try to help. Apparently, this priestess had a letter from a friend located here in Iron Harbor that was in dire need of assistance. There wasn't even time to find her a proper escort so Art took us on his fishing sloop up here. We were... greeted, by one Sister Vanda when we arrived to whisked away the priestess to Stonehome. Ordwi was supposed to meet us this morning but never showed up. Needless to say, we agree that something strange is going on at Stonehome. We've even acquired a key to the front door should we choose to use it. That's actually what we were looking at today, other ways to enter that isn't announcing our presence to the whole compound." Through the re-telling of their story, his hand wanders to the wound on his leg that is still bothering him even though the elixir healed the worst of it.

"There! How's that? Vildran, are you hurt?"

Once everyone's all patched up, Morga shares her story. "I came up here because my great-aunt needed help caring for my great-uncle. When I arrived, she'd fallen ill and had been taken to Stonehome already. My great-uncle needed constant tending, so I didn't have time to check up on her. He passed in his sleep the second night--of natural old age, as far as I could tell. I went up to Stonehome the next day to try to see my great-aunt and tell her the news. The guard at the gate refused to let me in. Said they were trying to keep other folks from being infected. Thing is, he didn't seem concerned for his own safety, so it can't be that contagious. I asked him to pass along a message to her, but his promise to do so rang false.

Well, I had my great-uncle to bury, so I left to finish seeing to the preparations. I asked around to see if anyone else had run into something similar. Turns out, quite a few folks have been taken in there, and no one comes out, not even as corpses. It's been long enough since it started that that's suspicious. Are people dying in there and their bodies are being disposed of without family members' knowledge or permission? Or is something worse happening? ... I hadn't heard about the bruises and markings. That makes me even more suspicious."

Oh, no thank you. I'm fine!

Vildran's antennae stand straight up on end when Morga approaches him.

So you too have loved ones held at this Stonehome. Nothing about it makes sense. Perhaps...

He hesitates before asking.

How adventurous are you feeling? Perhaps you like to join us in taking a peek inside that place. Given all of the folk that have been taken and held there, I believe this measure is now necessary!

He grimaces, checking Elsie's expression for any disapproval.

I've seen more strange things in recent days then all of my time at Sandpoint as a visiting researcher. The guard who washed ashore in Sandpoint, he told of strange creatures suddenly attacking their ship. There was no obvious vessel they could have launched their assault from. I believe we encountered some of them on the island where we recovered Ordwi. I don't know if those creatures from the deep are connected to the goings-on here or not. Also, the guard had strange bruises on his body that... resembled Thassilonian runes. I swear... every time I looked back at him it seems like they'd moved around on his skin.

He looks up at those listening, trying to hide his tone of resignation at it all. It was alot and he kept himself from dumping out more strange details about their time since arriving in Iron Harbor.

I think I'll pass on the extended solo adventure. :)

@Morga: You can use Autumn’s healer’s toolkit—it would serve you much better than me.

“Inducted?!” Autumn’s eyes shine with eager excitement. “No one’s ever asked me to be part of something like … well, whatever it is,” she finishes shyly. At the mention of sunset she looks puzzled. “It’s been hours since sunset,” she says casually. “Is there a reason you need to rush back so quickly?” She continues prattling on, in a self-absorbed way. “I think I know what you mean about the people on the Thassilonian ship though. I saw one of them heading back to the boat this evening—a gloomy man with a piercing stare and a long brown beard. Quite an unpleasant fellow.” She gives Janis’s description of Meitremar, curious to see how the cultist would react to news of him returning to his ship.

“Anyway,” she continues reluctantly, “I don’t think I can come with you. Sorry. I need to go back to Stonehome, so that they can finish curing whatever it is I’ve got.” She glances ruefully at her bruise. “But it shouldn’t take long—Mara’s all well now. They just sent her back home.”

@San: As someone with some experience, you would likely be able to feel the wound is infected, even if you don't know the exact nature of the disease.

At Elsie's:
Steaming stew accompanies your discussion. When Morga mentions lacking a healer's kit, Elsie voices that she may have a spare if the group can't find another one to use, but that she'd need to sell it to them in order to be able to buy another to replace it.

With Autumn:
Charmed, the fellow eagerly explains "We have work to do tonight, and they will want to know I survived. But if it's as late as you say, I'll be swimming back." At the comment describing Meitremar, the man's eyes go wide "What could have caused such a thing! His work was going so well. Xar-Azmak's pleasure was palpable." In a sudden surge of urgency, he slips his hands out from the loosened ropes. He turns back to Autumn "Then go to Stonehome. We will come for you there." He barely seems to process Autumn's final statements as he starts to head toward the shore.

Cast Daze. Basic Will save DC 17. If he’s unconscious, I’d have Sidonie and Bastiano tie him up again and leave him inside the tunnel. We’d then rejoin the others at Elsie’s.

The man half turns back before Autumn's spell shocks his mind for the second time today. He falls and is left unconscious. It takes little time for Bastiano to retie the bindings and the group of you to bring him back to the tunnel. In the state he's in, any sudden moves upon waking might just lead to getting submerged in the shallow water and drowning before he can pull himself upright. But at least he won't be getting back to his allies and letting them know what happened.

Feel free to make it back to Elsie's when you're ready.

With their captive once again securely bound and safely stored in the tunnel, Autumn returns to Elsie’s for a well-deserved meal and rest. Upon entering, she is a little surprised to see a dwarf at the table, sharing a meal and conversation with her elven companions. “Good evening,” she nods politely at the dwarf and even bends in a hint of a curtsy, “I’m Autumn. And …” Her eyes narrow, as if in recollection. “Aren’t you from Sandpoint?” She glances at San and Vildran for confirmation.

The sorceress has seen Morga only once, at the cathedral, when she was staking out the offering box. There was no conversation, nor exchange of names, but Autumn remembers the dwarf for how long it took her to diligently clean the cathedral—so long, in fact, that Autumn never got a chance to be properly alone with the offering box, something she remembers (or regrets) all too well. Morga, in turn, may remember Autumn as a one-time penitent who spent a curiously long time praying at a time when the cathedral was usually empty.

At the elf’s questioning look Autumn cautiously says “Don’t worry, I put it back where you left it.” She doesn’t say more, at least not openly, not until she learns that Elsie and Morga are trusted ears in their schemes. "And did you say your wound is infected?" she asks San while retrieving her healer's toolkit.

Indeed, even with the visible wound itself largely being healed, a light rash seems to have spread along San's leg where he was bitten. The skin is hot to the touch.

GM:
Speaking of hospitality, Morga is considering offering to allow the party to stay at her relatives' house, probably toward the end of this conversation. I'm imagining it as a small, run-down, musty home with little in the way of furniture, so not better than Elsie's. Just a heads up so you can decide whether or not it matters if you nudge the group toward either location.

Hopefully it’s okay if I push ahead and assume San & Vildran vouch for Morga.

With the elves revealing that they have already shared much with both Elsie and Morga, and that the dwarf is a trustworthy acquaintance from Sandpoint—indeed, it appears she has already cast some healing magic on San’s injury—Autumn relaxes and hands her healing kit to Morga. “Here, use mine. Much better in a proper healer’s hands. I’ll help as best I can.”
Medicine (Aid Another): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

While they treat the wound together, Autumn shares everything she has learned from their prisoner. “Bastiano said that the … cythnigot?” She shrugs her shoulders as she glances at Vildran for confirmation. Naming exotic beasts is not her forte. “Anyway, the weird wolf thing should be vulnerable to holy weapons and water.” Her gaze shifts directly to Morga. “So a cleric would be most welcome. Indeed, I wonder if Meitremar and the disease is all just a distraction to keep the clerics of Stonehome away from Rusthenge.”

Morga gratefully accepts Autumn's healer's toolkit. "Oh, thank you! I'll buy you a new one as soon as I get the coin. And if that doesn't happen until after we leave this place, you can find me at the Cathedral back in Sandpoint."

Autumn wrote:

@Autumn: Yep that's fine.
@Morga: You'd have 2 hero points, same as the rest of the team. Also, before I forget, you and the rest of the party should currently be at 380 XP.

@Morga:
No concerns with Morga offering her relatives' house as a place to stay. Elsie's just gives the party a connection to a friendly face in town, as well as a temporary home base. Your relatives' home also works, and you're welcome to fill in the details on how it looks or is appointed.

Autumn's aid in treating the slowly-spreading rash is limited, leaving Morga largely on her own.

Vildran nods at Autumn's pronunciation.

Yes, cythnigot.

Which leads to our next move. Do we investigate Stonehome tomorrow or go back to Rusthenge? We know one of these places is openly hostile, the other one probably will get that way quickly if we start snooping around. We could also check out that abandoned hut that's just across the water from Rusthenge. See if there's a way to spy on the cultists up there..." He shrugs, not entirely certain the best path forward.

Vildran leans forward in contemplation, his elbows resting on his legs. His antennae lean down and rub his forehead.

Please assume Autumn tells you everything about her friendly interrogation—I don’t want to type it all over again. :) I will try to hit the highlights as I see them though.

Autumn gazes at San as if he had grown an extra head. “So … go to the hut, all the way across the water on the other side of the harbor, to see if there’s a better view inside the tent?” She rolls her eyes and shakes her head. “No, it’s either Stonehome or Rusthenge.”

She frowns, thinking. “I’d definitely feel more comfortable investigating Stonehome, but—and I hate to say it—Rusthenge seems more urgent. Our informant was in an awful rush to go back there—he would’ve swum across if the tide were in. Remember how worried he was when I said the cythnigot was dead? I think killing it would slow down their plans, whatever they are.” Her face is grim at the prospect of battle.

“But I wonder if we should just tell the Gorumites about what we saw at Rusthenge? Maybe they could help? I know they’ve been sketchy, but I don’t think they’re allied with the cultists—remember what we overheard at Rusthenge, about Meitremar ensuring they have all the time they need for their ritual? And our informant was really surprised when I lied about Meitremar leaving Stonehome—said something about his work going well and really pleasing Xar-Azmak—I don’t suppose any of you’ve heard of him?”

“Anyway, Meitremar is definitely some sort of plant. I think the Thassilonian ship is just an unwitting courier though—our friend didn’t think much of them. Though …” Autumn frowns again. “… Stonehome and Rusthenge are at least somewhat friendly—I told our informant that I needed to go to Stonehome, and he didn’t seem bothered at all about coming later to get me there.”

Nooooo! I'm so sorry San! Crit failure means -2 on your next save.

"Wait--is this foxglove? Why is it labeled comfrey?!" In a panic, Morga dumps out the contents of the healer's kit and begins double checking everything. After a bit, she huffs. "Ugh! Looks like whoever sold it to you switched the labels on those two, but everything else looks right. San, the good news is the amount of foxglove in that poultice won't kill you. The bad news is that it'll undermine anything else I could do to help you fight that infection for a while. At least until tomorrow. You'll need to be resting for hours for this to work, so unless you want to be bedridden all day, it'll have to wait until tomorrow night. ... I'm really sorry." Indeed, Morga looks thoroughly mortified and ashamed. "I really should've smelled it before using it."

Sorry Morga—it seems like my luck with hero points has rubbed off on you. I did the same thing with my reroll earlier!

Autumn’s face goes through all the requisite emotions as Morga’s healing attempt unravels: confusion at the mixed-up herbs, indignation that she would be sold a defective healer’s kit, and sympathy for the cleric’s attempt. “There now,” she gently pats the dwarf’s arm in consolation, “we all make mistakes.” What goes unsaid is that she herself collected and labeled some of the herbs, caring only about making the kit look good enough to fool an unassuming layperson.

As for tomorrow, I currently have no preference for Stonehome vs Rusthenge, so I'll leave it to others to decide.

Aww no Morga! My fingers are crossed for you San. Since this disease has an interval of 1 day, you'll roll saves against it at the start of each day, rather than try to line up and remember exact timings.

Elsie cleans up bowls, but very clearly is listening with rapt attention as you lay out this story of mysterious cultists at Rusthenge and their allegiances or lack thereof with respect to the Gorumites. She refrains from commenting, so as not to interrupt your trains of thought, but you can tell she's shocked by your descriptions and what seems to have transpired today.

Religion DC25; Recalling identity of Xar-Azmak:
You recognize the name of Xar-Azmak as a long-dead demon lord of rust, decay and death. The lore surrounding this figure is that he led an invasion of the infernal city of Dis in an era pre-Earthfall and ended up with direct conflict with the archdevil Dispater, who struck him down.

Vildran rubs his chin, still a little dubious.

They might be connected, but I'd like to see a Gorumite interact with a Rusthenge cultist to be sure.

Just then Morga finishes up with San and gets flustered over the result. He chuckles a bit.

Well, I don't think he's dying. How do you feel, San?

Thinking some more, he offers

I'm inclined to learn more about the habits of the Rusthenge cultists. Do they go anywhere else in town? Perhaps we could catch them meeting up on the ship, or going to Stonehome. It does seem more urgent he finishes, concurring with Autumn.

Morga takes several moments to center herself (truthfully, to force an end to beating herself up about it) before continuing with the conversation. There was mention of a 'Xar-Azmak'. Hmm. Considering her luck tonight, she casts Guidance on herself before trying to dredge up a memory of that name.

Return to the town where it all began and unravel the Seven Dooms that would bring its early end!

When a beleaguered guard washes up in Sandpoint's harbor with tales of horrors, betrayal, and a terrible new affliction, the call to adventure sounds once more in the Light of the Lost Coast. In the far north of the Kindred Coast, Sandpoint's newest adventurers will be tested, and prove themselves as heroes. For little does anyone know, but heroes will soon be desperately needed. The legacy of the Lost Coast runs far deeper, and older, than anyone can imagine, and that legacy is about to come due. While the town of Sandpoint has seen more than it's fair share of trials over the years, none of those have prepared it for the sinister threat that lies beating in the deep, dreaming of Seven Deadly Dooms!
------------------------------
What is this?
Welcome to this recruitment for a combination Rusthenge and Seven Dooms for Sandpoint double-feature adventure played in PbP here on the forums. This is a 1-12 Pathfinder 2E adventure that takes Sandpoint's newest budding adventurers on a journey up Varisia's coastline to uncover a dire legacy from the time of ancient Thassilon, before returning to their home town as seasoned heroes in time to protect it against Seven Dooms that have been set against it. While there's a healthy dose of investigation and weaving your way through tense factional situations, much of both of these adventures involves delving into large dungeons to confront the deadly creatures and figures that lie within. Expect very classic adventuring themes and some nostalgia and references for those who've played in Sandpoint before. (There's no requirement to have played previous Runelords or Sandpoint adventures before, but it may be more fun if you have).

------------------------------
About Me:
I'm an experienced GM here on the boards, having run several APs in PF1E and Starfinder, including a couple that have now run to completion and freed me up to tackle something new. I've run much less PF2E in PbP (though I've certainly run it for my home group), but have plenty of experience with the system. I run consistent, reliable games that stay close to the source material, but still expand it around the characters that the players bring to the table. To that end, I like GMing for players that engage themselves with the setting, narrative, and the stories brought by their fellow players.

------------------------------
Recruitment Details:
As I do for all my games, I am planning on running a game with a steady pace, with 1 GM post per day every day including weekends. I expect players to keep up 1 post per day minimum - though you're welcome to post more often in response to your fellow players. From my experience, play-by-post lives and dies on posting momentum and player engagement. If you think you cannot keep up 1 post per day for several years (barring major conflicts and vacations and all of life's usual trials), this isn't the game for you. Additionally, I'm looking to pick up team players who are looking to not only engage with the adventure and myself, but also with their fellow players. Please keep these requirements in mind before applying.

I am looking to recruit 2-5 additional players, as I have several spots that are possibly already filled. I am aiming for a final party size of five or six to allow for the inevitable attrition. See below for specific requirements. Please read the Players Guide for Seven Dooms for Sandpoint for more set up and information regarding the adventure.

-------------------------------

Character Creation (the technical bits)::

  • Make a 1st level character, with standard wealth (150 silver)
  • This is a PF2E Remastered game, and all Common rarity remastered content is OK to use.
  • Please refer to the Seven Dooms for Sandpoint Player's Guide for recommendations, guidance on useful options, and so so much juicy lore. Rusthenge does not have a player's guide, and you won't need one, as I'm adjusting that adventure.
  • Common Classes that have not yet been remastered (or that won't be) are also allowed, but if they get remastered mid-adventure the expectation is that you will rebuild as the remastered version. Uncommon classes are not allowed.
  • Common Archetypes that have not yet been remastered (or that won't be) are also allowed. Uncommon archetypes are generally allowed, but please check with me.
  • Common Ancestries and Heritages are acceptable even if they haven't been remastered. Uncommon Ancestries/Heritages are generally allowed, but again please check with me.
  • Common Character Options (feats, spells, etc) from other sources are generally acceptable, but if a remastered version of that option exists, it should be used.
  • Uncommon Character Options (feats, equipment, spells, etc) may be available as well, but only if there's strong backstory justification, are gained through some specific roleplay during play, or if they come from these two adventures. Please flag any such options for my attention.
  • Backgrounds must be one of the backgrounds from the Seven Dooms for Sandpoint player's guide.
  • Character Creation (the non-technical bits)::

  • Give me a one to two paragraph summary of what your character is about - their personality, background, or whatever detail you feel is important. Express yourself! I'll be using these one or two paragraphs to get a feel for your character, as well as for your writing style. You can have more than two paragraphs of backstory, but put any further detail in your profile instead of in this thread.
Note that this campaign starts with the PCs as novice adventurers, or even non-adventurers, who find themselves the only ones available to help when a traumatized bodyguard washes up in the harbor. Adventurous, curious or protective souls may find it easy to slide into the plot that's brewing. A strong tie to Sandpoint and its history is a plus.

  • ---------------
To apply, please post the following using your proposed character's alias:
  • Basic technical details, ie Class, Ancestry, Background and desired role.

Would probably be best if Uncle Kaleb didn't know he had returned to Sandpoint ... would be fun to break into the old manor though! Had seemed haunted before it was empty too.

His parents had died on the road and he was lucky to have received what they left to him: his mother's dead Aeon Stone and his father's dead Ring of Telekinesis. Sure! I'll probably have to wait until the weekend to get started, and I'll be leaning very heavily on Archives of Nethys to figure it out.

Maybe I'll write BAP portions first, so I have a target to aim for. I already have a general concept I think.

Could we have a connection to Sandpoint that references past adventure paths set in and around Sandpoint? I'm thinking maybe using a character of mine from RotRL as an ancestor if that could work, à la Return of the Runelords. How much time has passed since RotRL took place?

Yes, you can absolutely have a connection to Sandpoint referencing past adventures there (and in fact, I think that's part of the fun). The heroes that were involved with Sandpoint in the past are assumed to now be retired or have moved on, but otherwise it's free reign for the most part. It's been 17 years since the events of RotRL (Golarion time and real life time are in lockstep), which means your character may in fact be the child of one of the previous fabled heroes, just now coming of age.

"Now look here!" Bashalde exclaims after ducking under the stool swung at his head while struggling to keep his beer inside his mug. "I really don't understand why you're so upset."

Bashalde could never figure out how he ended up in these situations. All he wanted to do was spend his days resting, drinking, and smiling at the pretty girls. Unfortunately, the drinking part requires money, so some of the days had to be spent working. The speed at which the money he earned disappeared also perplexed him, but that is beside the point. For now. It will be critical later in the story.

Inevitably, it seemed, that when Bashalde was trying to mind his own business, someone would do something that one really should not do. That's not to say that Bashalde was innocent of the occasional--fine, more than occasional--misstep with the law. However, he treated people politely, and bullying was just one thing he felt needed to be called out. The ones getting called out usually did not appreciate it. Then the next thing he knew, someone was throwing a punch--or a stool--at his jaw.

The other man swung the stool again. This time it glanced against Bashalde's arm and knocked loose the mug from his grip. Bashalde watched as his beer spilled across the floor, and his face turned red. "Oh. That was so unnecessary!"

They might have settled down with their little jewelry shop, but that doesn't mean he has to attach himself to it as well. Besides, he might find some neat trinket he can bring home for them to sell!

When the last big shakeup happened, all he could do was hide. It was then that he decided that wouldn't happen to him again. Since then he's trained with his bow in between bouts of research, waiting for his opportunity to really contribute to the growing knowledge base of ancient Thassilon. Thanks Cellion, it helps some to know, if only in general.

I'll apologize in advance for fumbling through developing a character her in public, but I'm not at all inhibited about asking for suggestions and comments about what I'm putting together. So, please chime in anyone if you have advice.

I know what I want out of my character in the end, so it's a matter of building the foundation of the bridge to get me there. Without going into great detail, the bullet points of my character are as follows:

    1. She is from Magnimar, and has a relative who is fairly accomplished, heroic, and well know. This relative is a major influence on her life, and has taught her quite a bit.

    2. She knows how to get around quietly and do things on the down low. She's not someone who prefers to handle conflict physically and directly, choosing words and wits first for such situations.

    3. She has some background in music (The relative is a Bard).

    4. She has a strong interest in Thassilonian and related lore and history (from stories she grew up hearing from said relative).

So what I'm thinking about is as follows:

    1. Race: Human

    2. Backstory: Eager Scafflow is the obvious pick, but I'm also eying Runelord Scholar as well. Newcomer could work too.

    3. Class: Rogue, probably with the Thief racket because it's parsimonious enough to allow some investment in both CHA and INT with the savings from not investing in STR (also best for handling traps and such I think. However, Scoundrel could also work maybe if I put less in INT, some in STR, and went archer.

    4. As soon as possible (but probably not at 1st level), adding the Bard archetype. I'm most interested in the Enigma Muse because of the Lore and knowledge abilities. But it's hard to pass up the Maestro and Lingering Performance for some buffing, so maybe Multifarious Bard so I can grab a little of both. I'm less interested in the magic since I think I'd rather keep to simpler things on my first time out with 2e.

    Help? :)

    @rdknight

Since you're brand new to 2e, here are some general details and Bard Multiclass Archetype-specific details to consider. I don't know how much you do or don't know, so I'll start pretty basic.

Multiclassing in PF2 is done in the form of Class feats called Archetype feats. You would spend one of your appropriate level Class feats to gain an Archetype feat. You generally gain a Class feat every even level (martial classes generally also get a 1st level Class feat, and humans have a feat that could score you a Class feat at 1st level). The required entry feat for a Multiclass Archetype is 2nd level, though (there's an elf heritage and a rogue racket--eldritch trickster--that break that rule). Then for each Multiclass feat you would want after that, you spend the appropriate level or higher Class feat to gain that feat.

So, to be a Rogue with the Bard Multiclass Archetype Dedication feat at 2nd level, you would need a +2 in CHA. That feat grants you training in Occultism and Performance (or a different skill if you're already trained in any of those) and the ability to cast 2 occult cantrips. You choose a Muse but gain no benefit from it.

While you could take Lingering Performance at 4th, it would not provide you any benefit. Courageous Anthem (inspire courage) is an 8th level Archetype feat. You could take Healing Hymn, Song of Strength, or Uplifting Overture at 4th with Basic Muse's Whispers 4th level Archetype feat and then take Lingering Performance at 6th with Advanced Muse's Whispers Archetype feat. However, I didn't get that that's what you were envisioning.

You might enjoy Rogue with Eldritch Trickster racket and take Bard as your spellcasting Multiclass Dedication Archetype feat.

    Scarab Sages

Pretty basic is very excellent, thanks Bashalde.

I've gotten two responses (one was a PM) and I'm now feeling about twice as smart compared to this morning when I first posted. It seems archetypes are more expensive in terms of levels going by than I really appreciated.

The reason I went with Rogue in the first place is I decided I didn't want to take on casting my first time out, so I'd need a plan for combat. Rogue could supply a way to help in combat and plenty of skills. But maybe I'm trying to stuff too much into Rogue, and making it more difficult than just biting the bullet on casting and choosing Bard instead.

If I decide so, I can start as Bard with the Maestro Muse, get Multifarious Muse at maybe 4th level, and grab the things I want from Enigma Muse. I get the core things I'm looking for in one class by trading fighting for casting. If I take an archetype it can be later, after I have a solid base built.

This is the better plan, yes?

@GM: I should usually be fine with the minimum 1 post/day, but I normally travel for about 6-8 weeks each summer (for this summer it's about two weeks in early May, a couple weeks in July, and a couple weeks in August). During these travels my post rate would generally be nil. Is this a dealbreaker, or can you work around such absences?

    rdknight wrote:

[...] It seems archetypes are more expensive in terms of levels going by than I really appreciated. [...]

This is the better plan, yes?

I wouldn't say it's more expensive. Multiclassing in this edition is designed with a different philosophy. If you start as a rogue, you'll always be a pretty good rogue. You'll get the rogue skill progression no matter what. Rogue feats can enhance your options vs archtype feats that expand your options. It's also designed in such a way that you can't poach another class's core gimmick until around lvl 10.

Looking at casting in this ed vs pf1... it was a shock to me to see how "ineffective" some spells are compared to what they were. Don't be discouraged, it'll make sense once you get the hang of the combat. With high charisma, Intimidate and Diplomacy (bon mot) are your friends. Having a single action ability to do is handy whether it's the shield cantrip, focus spell, or a skill action.

I think I've rambled enough at this point.

    Dark Archive

    rdknight wrote:
This is the better plan, yes?

    Better is relative. :)

If you want to be a Bard, then being a Bard probably is the better path. All Bards get Courageous Anthem, so Maestro is not strictly necessary. Lingering Composition lets you squeeze in a few more actions each round if you want to be more "attack-y" or more "cast-y."

Bards can be stretched thin with all the things you might want a Bard to do. There are some good, readable Bard guides (check here, I like Tarondor's guide style myself, but check out the others too) that give you some ideas for stat arrays. The best you can hope for in Dexterity is 16, so your AC is going to attract critical hits. You won't have the boosts to spare for your Intelligence to be the "know-it-all" Bards are known for in other editions/games unless you go full caster.

Spellcasting is tilted a bit differently in PF2, also. Casters rely heavily on their cantrips and use their spells for more significant occasions.

Thank you Bashalde and Natloz for pitching in with good advice! Spellcasting and multiclassing are definitely very different in PF2E.

    Great applications so far.
    ----

@Aeshuura, Lepidopteran, and anyone else who would like to apply but knows that they will have scheduled absences: The one post per day requirement is intended to be strict to help the whole table run smoothly and at a consistent pace. From my experience, waiting for input from folks is a serious pace-breaker and causes campaigns to lose momentum and drag on, draining enthusiasm even from the remaining folks. Furthermore, after several games where I've needed to extensively bot characters, I'm looking to entirely avoid doing so this time. That said, vacations, sicknesses and other events are a fact of life. If you're confident in your ability to keep up otherwise (and expect to be very consistent and engaged), you're welcome to apply.

If you're selected, I would *strongly* suggest that you arrange for another player in the group to take control of your character during your absences, especially if those absences are lengthy or regular. Unlike some other games, I do not plan to bot any characters (they will be skipped instead), so arranging things ahead of time with your fellow players will be the best way to keep your character active.

So, I want to have the newcomer background. Even though the player's guide doesn't give you what creatures you encounter, can I say my character's interest was Aquatic Creatures lore for additional lore? The city is next to the sea. I can say my character lived nowhere near the sea, and Sandpoint was the closest city to the sea, that would possible have these creatures. I'm thinking character lived in Nybor near a lake and fished, but wanted to see other aquatic creatures. The nearest city not next to a sea is about 100 miles.

DoubleGold, per Player Core, if your lore covers creatures it has to be a specific creature or narrow category of creatures. Everything aquatic is much too broad. Otherwise that sounds fine.

Alright, I've settled on a character. Thank you all for your kind suggestions and advice, as well as your patience. It was extremely helpful. A tentative build is in the profile, and I might tinker a little more, but the fundamentals are set. Hopefully I've managed to get it all correct.

Human, Versatile Heritage, Scoundrel Rogue, Lost Coast Local Background.

I'll expand Gwurful's information in the profile to cover a few more details. Here's the 2 paragraph version.

    Character Description:

The two great influences in Gwerful’s life have been her parents, Francesca and Renato, and her Aunt Ro. Fran and Ro are identical twins, but quite opposite in personality and disposition. Fran is an officer in Magnimar’s City Guard, dependable, predictable, introverted, and bookish. She married a like-minded soul in Renato the barrister. Auntie Ro is restless and mercurial, a former adventurer of considerable fame who is now a composer and lyricist writing mostly for theater. Gwerful has always preferred spending time with her exciting, if sometimes exhausting, aunt over her steady and staid home life with her parents. As she has gotten older, and argued more often with her parents, Gwerful longer and more frequent periods actually living with Auntie Ro. After all Gwerful is more like Ro in interests, personality, and temperament than her mother, but it’s a great deal for her. Ro barely knows the words “discipline” or “curfew”, sets few rules, and doesn’t blow her stack when Gwerful breaks the rules that do exist. The arrangement sort of works though since Gwerful idolizes her aunt and hesitates to act in ways that she thinks might disappoint her. It gives Gwerful the freedom she craves with just enough restraint to keep her out of serious trouble.

Gwerful isn’t one to think all that much about the future. She’s reached the age, some like her mother would say passed the age, when she should be thinking about some kind of career or vocation. But, presently her social card is too full to take to out to think about such things seriously. She has confidence, good looks, and charm, which makes it easy for her to meet people and make friends. Her social network in Magnimar is impressive in its size, and they are all the “right people" for various reasons. Gwerful has an interest in theater like her aunt, but she hasn’t done much to pursue a career in the performing arts. She has friends who are members of the local cult of Arshea, and often goes with them to gatherings, so at least she gets some practice in dancing. Likewise, Auntie Ro’s stories about the Runelords and ancient Thassilon have piqued Gwerful’s interest. But, she isn’t exactly studious or focused enough to be a scholar of the subject. In fact, all of these things are going to be on hold for a while. Aunt Ro is presently traveling abroad for an extended period, and she didn’t think to inform Francesca. Gwerful is taking the opportunity to do a bit of traveling on the sly while she can. Aunt Ro (though not Francesca, long story) mostly grew up in Sandpoint, up the coast a ways. Gwerful has been to the town several times, and enjoys visiting the area, so she’s going to spend a while up there. Considering how long Ro will be gone, the odds Gwerful will get caught are decent to good, but she figures “f~$% it, it will be totally worth it”.

    Prior Experience:

Obviously by now I have no past experience with 2e.

I've been playing in PbP games here steadily for about 8 1/2 years so I know my way around PbP very well.

Aquatic is a specific creature trait.

Anyway how that works is that the more specific something is, the bigger bonus you get. For example, there is a background that is PFS legal that gives animals lore. It seems broad, but it is a lore provided by a pfs background. Mastodon
Take the Mastodon for instance. If someone has Animals lore the DC is the same as if the person took nature, ie. 26. If someone has elephants lore, it is considered an unspecific lore. 24. And if someone has Mastodon lore the dc is 21. Anything else is somewhere in between.
Can I take Tentacled Water creatures lore? This covers Jellyfish, Octopus, Kraken, etc. While leaving out fish, sharks, dragon turtle, and airborn creatures with tentacles, etc.

So I have an idea for a human magus (Runelord Scholar) since no one has taken that background yet that I have seen. I will get a post up tomorrow. Kinda excited!

This is Aeshuura's submission. Will post with the required things tomorrow, hopefully! I have been working on the post.

For what it's worth, my submission San also has runelord scholar background. I can totally see a rivalry having formed between San and Kussano from Kussano studying the same/similar things and already being able to use more advanced magic. Both of them try to help with the washed up guard to try to one up each other.

That would be a fun! I didn't realize what San was! That would be a fun rivalry! I can imagine the two of them sparring with each other, training in the mornings!

    Verdant Wheel

I'm surprised more people aren't applying to this...

I'm kinda not RZ - there's sort of this weirdness to how the modules were put together which is kind of off putting just in itself. I am sure that GM-C can work through that, but even the idea that the 2 adventures should be linked ... yet there is a distinct palette of backgrounds for both.

TBH, I applied the other night specifically on the basis of how well thought through GM-C's integration reads.

@Rainzax: I'm not too surprised that we don't have too many applications, as this pair of modules isn't one of the popular, famous APs that people have been itching to play for years. I'm confident however that they'll make for an enjoyable game together, and as Evindyl mentioned, I've got some plans on how to better integrate their stories.

    Completed Applications
    Tao Lavinia Heron - rainzax
    Bashalde - Blake's Tiger
    Ranellbess - Ira Kroll
    Sidonie - rdknight
    San Thevin - natloz

    Incomplete
Ceven Valdemar - Evindyl (missing some details)
Kusano - Aeshuura (missing some details)

Applications are open for another week! They're due by May 1st 9PM EST.

I'm still interested. Just working on my application so that I can present everything in one place rather than spreading it out piecemeal. My idea is for a human sorcerer (hag bloodline) with the Scarnetti-connected background.
