Iladora takes a gasping breath as she returns to consciousness. She grabs the hilt of her sword and pushes herself painfully to her feet as quickly as she can, only to watch the last of the automatons collapse from a blast of force damage.
It's then that she notices one of their members is still on the floor, unmoving. Oh no...

DM Carbide |

Viridian is obviously dead, so save the potion.
The party is able to retreat unchallenged.

![]() |

"That was horrifying. Two quick strikes and we were almost neutralized. I have never come that close to loosing everything." "I have fought demons in the Worldwound and not felt as helpless as now." "Let us see if we can get divine help." "If we leave now we can be out of here in a few hours and hopefully make a temple visit before they shut for the night." "Or if that is not possible, we can send word to the Society and get their help in the morning."
Let's go back. Lybram will pay 1000 gold towards Viridian's life fund. Can we just take it out of the chronicle gold and if so should I revert to the regular mace for the remainder of this level?
"I will carry him for now." "but first here is more of Erastil's gift to help us with this sad task ahead."
Converted soundburst for cure moderate for Iladora: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (8, 1) + 5 = 14

![]() |

"Agreed. It could have been any of us, so it seems only prudent to raise one another if killed."

DM Carbide |

It takes a couple of days, unfortunately, to reach a temple with a cleric capable of casting raise dead; there's an Abadaran priest in Fort Inevitable, but she's only capable of casting up to restoration.
Sure, take it out of the chronicle gold and revert your weapon, Lybram.

![]() |

It takes a couple of days, unfortunately, to reach a temple with a cleric capable of casting raise dead
Practically a non-issue, since we'll have to wait a week between castings of restoration anyway.

DM Carbide |

The party is able to get Viridian raised and restored, and after a brief pause to get Blitz back returns to the Spire.
Do you want to go back to where you fought the automatons, or go somewhere else?

![]() |

I vote we go right back to where the automatons were, just to avoid confusion.

DM Carbide |

There's a black lever in the room, and a single door on the east wall, in the southeast corner of the room. The party also bypassed a door in the hall.

![]() |

"Before we go any further, let's test the lever and see how it changes things. I think we just collect near the lever when we do this or we may end up getting separated."

![]() |

Viridian staggers along, leaning on Blitz as he recovers from
His traumatic experience.
”By the Green - I trust these machines and levers and automatons even less now. Very unnatural.“

DM Carbide |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Hey, that 20 was natural!
Like the other black lever, this one has three positions. Moving it has no apparent effect.

DM Carbide |

With no apparent result from the lever manipulation, what next?

![]() |

"That was very anticlimatic." Lybram says after all positions of the black lever are tried. "Not even a distant scrape or click."
"There is a door in the hallway I passed getting to our fight. I would like to check it and see. Merisiel, could you de-trap it please?"
trap checks on door: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Lybram checks it but waits for Merisiel's confirmation.
"Li'l Fella, get be hind me and stay".
Lybram will open the door once everyone is ready.

![]() |

"Let's leave the lever in the down position and head back and reexplore."

DM Carbide |

The door appears to be untrapped, so Lybram opens it. The walls of the small room on the other side are covered in ancient tiles of gold, green, and blue, although many are cracked, chipped, or missing. A shallow pool of clear water fills the southern half of the chamber, steaming with warmth. Robes and towels hang on pegs by the door, and a tin bucket on the floor is filled with blocks of dark clay.
A search of the room turns up nothing more than the obvious. The blocks are blackfire clay, and are worth a bit.
Where to now?

DM Carbide |

There's a door in the east wall just south of where Viridian is now, or you could go back to the red cylinder--by adjusting the red lever, you were able to turn the cylinder so that it gave access to a set of double doors.

![]() |

Mrs. Book will take one of the cloaks. She readies herself near the available door.

DM Carbide |

The door opens to reveal another brass cylinder, this one aligned (and I couldn't get the moving bits right without messing up the rest of the map, so you'll have to imagine this part) so that a narrow passage leads east. It branches north, then continues east to end at a door.

![]() |

Lytham exclaims, "Just a bath. Got all tense for nothing."
After the dicovery of another rotating cylinderleading to more to explore, "Lead on and I'll follow."
Just checking, we should be fully healed and rested after town and Viridian's raising?

![]() |

"I have to admit, a hot bath would be nice. Perhaps once we've secured this level of the dungeon."

![]() |

Assuming Viridian has recovered - other than gold expended, not sure if need to mark anything else.
”After that water level, I would be wary of any bath found within this place. No telling what weirds may be lurking“
Viridian seems more cautious and sullen as he considers himself lucky to been brought back for some task yet unfinished.

![]() |

"I'd be wary of ANYTHING in this place. But lead on. Pick a direction and let's keep moving."

DM Carbide |

The party goes east down the narrow passage. Iladora looks north at the branch and sees (not that the map shows this; see previous note) another cylinder that's lined up to give access to a door about twenty feet north.
You now have a door to the north and a door to the east--where do you want to go?

![]() |

I vote East.
"More cylinders, I fear we go through one and the lever breaks or a madman flips it trapping us. I would prefer the East door. But lead on; I will follow."

DM Carbide |

Arming dummies and racks of basic weapons line the walls of this chamber. There is a double door in the northern wall, a single door in the southern wall, and two doors in the western wall; you've opened the southern of the two. A single black lever protrudes from a control panel on the south wall. It is in the down position, and an emerald automaton stands next to it. A set of bronze bars (the western dotted line on the map) separates the party from the automaton.
Round 1:

Iladora, Mrs. Book, and Corbrae can act! Note that the bars prevent you from reaching the automaton (and vice versa).
Corbrae Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Iladora Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Mrs. Book Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Viridian Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Automaton Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Automaton: AC 17 T 11 FF 16 HP taken: 0

![]() |

"I bet that lever will raise the bars, so maybe not so safe. And it may lower bars too, separating the party. We need to be very careful here and try to remain together."
What position is the red colored corridor in? I.e., what do we see when we look north up the corridor branch?

![]() |

Iladora rushes into the room. "Stay behind me if you don't think you're up to it," she tells Viridian, noticing his (well-deserved) fear. "Hesitating at the wrong moment could get you killed.
"...Again," she adds.
Can I shoot an arrow between the bars? Not sure if it would do much good against an automaton, but better than doing nothing.

DM Carbide |

Yes; the bars offer no protection against missile attacks.

![]() |

Ok cool. Move action to sheath sword, move action to move and draw longbow.

DM Carbide |

What position is the red colored corridor in? I.e., what do we see when we look north up the corridor branch?
The cylinder is aligned so that the passage through it runs north-south, and there's a closed door just north of the edge of the cylinder.

![]() |

Viridian pauses to deny his trepidation but knows his allies are counting on him
Time to get back In the saddle as the saying goes..,
”I am ready. You can count on me….and Blitz“ he draws his blade and moves up behind Iladora
