GM Nomadical |
Welcome to the PF1 Special Blood Under Absalom for Gameday X. I'll post more instructions once recruiting is finalized. See you then!
GM Nomadical |
While we wait to start, please allow me to lay out the ground rules, which are designed for fairness and consistency, while keeping the game moving at a pace to ensure we finish on time.
⚔ Please make it obvious what buffs you have active and what your AC is.
⚔ Miss is always low if a miss chance applies. For example, if there is a 50% miss chance on a melee attack, a result of 1-50 on d100 is a miss.
⚔ I roll group initiative and track character actions. Unless you state you are waiting for another to act, I will adjudicate those actions in the order they were posted.
⚔ You may delay to a later position in the initiative sequence as usual.
⚔ If I make a mistake, please let me know, and I will try to make it right. If it’s too far back, too complex to correct, or too minor to matter, we may have to accept it and move on, with the understanding that I will be fair and equitable.
⚔ I generally prefer PCs to roll their own saving throws, miss chances, and Attacks of Opportunity (AoO). It keeps the game moving, and by reducing my workload it means I may be able to make a quick post when I otherwise wouldn’t have had time.
⚔ I like a relatively fast-paced scenario, However, do be aware that my posting can be irregular. I find when a game loses momentum, the fun is quickly sucked out of it, so I will do my best to keep it moving.
⚔ As such, if you do not post an action within 24 hours from when I invite you to post, I reserve the right to take actions for your character (botting). However, because of my highly unpredictable and erratic work and sleep schedule, that 24 hours is not a hard limit by any means. I encourage, but do not insist, that you have some botting instructions and/or dice macros in your character’s profile especially if you have specific things that they always or never do in combat or have very complex dice rolls for combat.
⚔ If at all possible, please let me know if something comes up that prevents you from posting. Likewise, I will do my best to update you all if I will be much more than 24 hours before my next post.
I’m a long-haul international cargo airline pilot. Many of my work days are spent sleeping as much as I can right up to the wake-up call before a flight, flying one or more 8 to 16 hour legs, then falling into bed at the next hotel. My employer’s jets do not have wifi because the boxes we carry don’t need to check their email or watch movies in flight. So it’s not unusual for me to not be able to post for 30+ hours on occasion. However, when I’m not sleeping or flying, I’m off duty in a hotel somewhere in the world with no responsibilities, and that’s when I can post as much as I need to and keep the game moving along.
Questions? Just let me know. Let's have fun!
Jilla |
Thanks GM, all sounds good to me. Do you need any info from us in this thread?

Feel free to ninja-dot into Gameplay if you wish.
Yes, Jilla, thanks for the reminder. Please let me know:

I'm only asking for a Discord name as an alternate method of communication in case we have extended or frequent issues with the Paizo forums as happened during a PBP con a couple years ago or recently with the whole Cookie Fiasco. If you don't Discord, that's okay; as I said it's just a backup.
Apparently, they're using yet another new reporting tool for this con. If I need more info for it, I'll let you know.

@Javrid: I realize this is a new character, but could you please fill out the tag line so that when things do heat up, I don't have to check your profile page for basic details. Also, please provide chronicle info here like the others did just above this post.
FYI to everyone, the opening of this scenario is kinda slow. The timing assumes a sit-down face-to-face special and allows time for mustering, character introductions and GM admin-istrivia.

@Orenji and Dimlock:
Did you see the Knowledge (planes) spoiler in the post where combat started?
In our party only you two are trained in Knowledge (planes), but I could not find any attempts of a check in gameplay...
Dimlock Blackfang |
Thought I rolled it already and failed.
GM Nomadical |
As you may know, this was one of the first Specials. They didn't publish a table of DCs adjusted by tier for various checks and saves back then. So many of the skill checks are set at a single DC for all tiers. This might make it nearly impossible for a Tier 1-2 table to get some of them, especially later on. Obviously normal monster ID DCs will be determined by the CR of the critter, of course.
Kurik |
It seems Kurik forgot to post his purchases in his downtime: *facepalm*
1x Acid (10 gold)
2x Alchemist's Fire (40 gold)
1x wand of bless weapon (2 PP)
Total: 50 gold, 2 PP

Re: Jilla's question over in Gameplay about the rubies. In this post, the herald said:
"I have here 100 rubies. On the morrow, fifty of these rubies will begin to glow, and those individuals or groups in possession of one such gem shall be contacted by one of our agents, who will give them the details of where the first event of the qualifier will take place."
Having just one gives you 50-50 odds of it glowing. Having more ... increases your odds. Please don't do high-level math to determine your odds with more rubies. The scenario specified a formula that another GM already pointed out was flawed.
Suffice to say that more = better, and failing to have a glowing ruby won't cause you to fail the scenario. They didn't leave mission success up to a coin toss.

@Javid: Just to clarify, you are using Flurry of Blows to attack twice with a double weapon? Otherwise you would incur the full penalties for Two Weapon Fighting albeit with a light weapon in your off hand.

Correct. Using Flurry of Blows to attack twice.
GM Nomadical |
Folks, I'm really sorry about the delay. I got wrapped up in GenCon and didn't have a chance to write your closing post. I'll get on them now.
You DO NOT need to spend 300 gp for the rubies. I had prerolled the d100 and saw that you would succeed, and then didn't notice that the Act was ending. The 70% that GM Ladile rolled is not binding, since I already knew the result.
Glowing?: 1d100 ⇒ 22
So, back to it!
Orenjii |
Good of the GM to take time out from his vacation to let me kill a character in VTT.

Nice try! But Jaqweh lives to Get 'Em another day!
Orenjii |
Only because Vision face-tanked all the damage.
GM Nomadical |
The composition of this almost-all-martial party makes this a little challenging. Here’s my suggestions to speed this up:
Orenjii as the Wizened Crone is probably easiest.
The Cruel Bandit is built for rogues, and the Monkey King is another primary spellcaster, so those are the two that don’t get used for this party.
Jilla could play the Female Clown, since she can do non-lethal with her fists anyway, and doesn’t want to be in Splint Mail armor.
Same reasoning for Javid to be the Male Clown, wielding a broom stick flavored as his bo staff.
That leaves Dimlock, Sulmoro, and Kurik splitting up the General, the Noble Warrior, and one of them plays the Warrior Woman.
I don’t want anyone to feel pressured, but obviously I had more time to consider this that y’all did, and the pacing of this scenario is already fast enough that hashing this out via PBP just takes away from the fighting.
Jilla |
Thanks GM, the tips are appreciated, especially when we're on a schedule like in a Special.
Kurik |

I second this. Thank you for taking the special circumstances of PbP into consideration, GM Nomadical!
Orenjii |
All hail, Scottish guy! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!
GM Nomadical |
I belatedly realize I owe Orenjii (and by extension, Chris) an apology for misgendering them when I assumed they'd be best as the Wizened Crone. They could also just as easily have been the Monkey King, since that's also a spellcaster role.
Obviously, the scenario was written before Paizo embraced diversity in its writing. And in my defense, Orenjii's token looks very female. But neither of those excuse my failure to bear in mind someone's identity.
Orenjii |
I didn't even think about that, because it's such an obvious match for the witch. But I appreciate it.
GM Nomadical |
Is anyone Slow Tracking?
Also, as a reminder, you're free to roll your Day Jobs or not. GMs are no longer required to annotate your chronicle with your Day Job. I'll do so if you want me to, or you can roll it and record it yourself.
GM Nomadical |
We’re getting very, very close to the end. Time for boon rolls!
Everyone please roll a d20 here in Discussion. If you get a 19 or 20, then also please roll a d3 to determine which one you get.
=========================
GM Nomadical’s Boon roll: 1d20 ⇒ 1
I didn't win a boon, but I also cleared out that Nat 1 so I can smack Javid after he acts. Yeah!
Javid Samrad |
To boon or not to boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 17
*SMACK!*
Kurik |
boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 14 No.
Jilla |
Bruce Springsteen's Boon to Run: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Day Job (Profession Baker): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Orenjii |
Booooooon: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Craft Woodworking: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
1d3 ⇒ 1
Dimlock Blackfang |
boon: 1d20 ⇒ 141d3 ⇒ 3
Sulmoro |
Profession (Soldier): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Boon: 1d20 ⇒ 9
GM Nomadical |
You only fight one of them at a time. Red and Green will each wait their turns, and will be (hand-wave) unaffected by any combat directed at them before it’s their turn. [s]Don’t get stupid and try otherwise, thereby wasting your actions. (We all know who I’m lookin’ at here, right?) [/b] (Why did I bother?) The yellow-robed sifu is NOT a legal target.
@Jilla: Yellow Robed Sifu is levitated above the stage. He’s not a combatant. He’s likely somewhere around Level 20 plus Mythic levels. I don’t have stats for him. He’s running Hao Jin’s holdings while she’s out on sabbatical, so that gives you an idea of his power level.
And congrats to Orenjii for winning a boon!
@Everyone: Perhaps I should have just presented one monk at a time, and not dropped a token for the Sifu. Sorry if it’s causing confusion. I presented it the way the fluff was written, but we've seen a lot of writing issues with this scenario already. It could have been done having them “appear” in turn as each is defeated individually. We’ve only got a couple days left, and the encounter and scenario ends when enough total monks have been defeated across all the tables one at a time.
Jilla |
@GM: No worries, just to clarify--I wasn't trying to target the yellow-robed sifu--just deceive the other defenders into thinking someone/something (my "sun elemental") was getting close so they'd try to intercept it and leave my buddies alone for a round. My Bluff check was abysmal, so it's all a moot point anyway :)
GM Nomadical |
And that's a wrap! Feel free to RP over in Gameplay, but I'm planning to leave the Overseer's post as the last GM post.
I'm about to log into a Roll20 game, then bed after. I'll try to report this game during that one, but no promises. I still need to put your Day Jobs on the chronicles, too, so expect it all to be done in the morning Miami time at worst case.
GM Nomadical |
Please let me know if I made any mistakes.
I need Orenjii's email address (didn't you know that androids in fantasy times had built-in email servers with magical global access?) so I can report the boon that Chris won.
Orenjii |
PM'ed.
Sheet looks good. Thank you all for a great game, especially Nomadical for running!
Dimlock Blackfang |
Thank you for running the game.
I should also say thank you for the carry to the rest. :P
Kurik |
Thanks for running the game, I had fun! :-)
Kurik's chronicle looks ok so far, but I think the purchases I made at the start of the mission have to be included - right?
GM Nomadical |
@Orenjii: Got it and submitted. You won a Contemplative Traveler boon, though I have no idea what that one is about.
@Kurik: It's not really required. There's no GM Initial boxes next to purchases or Prestige Spent. I've only had 1 GM really feel a need to fill it in if we made purchases (and pre-Covid, I traveled and played at tables all over the world). You level up and shop on your own time and without GM oversight. As long as you track your purchases on an inventory sheet in case of an audit, you're fine.
I'll say too that the online experience can be different than how the F2F experience was. Typically everyone was rushing to get out before the store closed, or at a con to get to the next session. Heck, I've gotten chronicles with nothing more than a GM's signature, or with the wrong boons crossed off. So tracking your purchases is ultimately up to you, and some (most, I'd say) GMs don't feel a need to record it on chronicles.
That being said, I've done so since you asked nicely, and your updated chronicle is in the same folder.
It was a pleasure to run this. Hope to see you all at other tables in the future.
Kurik |
Ok, good to know. Thank you for the updated chronicle! :)
Jilla |
Thanks GM! You ran a great game with a lot of fun posts, and I think that's my favourite experience at a PFS Special so far.
Kurik |
@GM Nomadical:
I forgot to ask a question regarding a Faction Goal of the Silver Crusade. *facepalm*
Did we 'defeat an evil outsider with a CR of 2 or higher'? Maybe Judge Heng?
Would you mind checking, please?
Thanks!

Yes, Judge Heng counts. He's a CR 4 LE kuwa oni (outsider).
