Yes. Yesterday was a crazy day but I'll get a post up today

Visiting family in NC this weekend so might not have time to post. If you want to spend some game time getting to know each other now is time… also forgive my typos. Data entry on an iPad is not my strength.

I've posted the Zone recommendations in the campaign tab.
I know we've all been trained on grid style combat and this "Theatre of the Mind" concept can be difficult to embrace due to the vagueness of positioning, but if we can simply let the strategic positioning go it will be much easier.
Just wing it. In this combat for example I stated in the set-up piece that everything in the room is in Zone 1. The enemy, the statue, the sarcophagi and the characters are all in Zone 1. It's not important for this example if you're 5' away or 30' away you can all do something to directly interact at this range.
You could simply state "I shoot an arrow and move towards the back of the chamber. I know that this is 25' to 30' away, and will rule accordingly.
Also, feel free to create things that add to the combat. For instance looking for cover in this room you know there is a Sarcophagus in each corner, and a Statue in front of a secret door. You could take partial cover behind one of the sarcophagus as an option like Enoch is doing. I will also give creative license in many cases. (This room is not a good example), but if you were to say something like I hide behind an empty chest of funerial items against the wall I might add that to the scene.
I think once we get the hand of it this will make combat more fun and creative instead of thinking about squares of movement, and proper positioning. This relies on trusting each other to make it play out, but I know it works. I spent years playing 1E with no grid, no map. and no miniature and never had an issue.

Guys. I'm so frustrated. I can't seem to find a way to get you guys to understand how the combat is happening. Everybody is just acting out of turn, and I feel like I'm unable to clearly help you understand what's happening.
The initiative order is posted.
I clearly stated the beginning of the next round. (Round 2)
I clearly described the room and the zones.
I've placed the zones explanation in the Campaign notes.
I shouldn't have to recap the entire situation after every post. I invest time in this game, and I don't feel you guys take the effort to read back a few posts before posting.
Everybody just helter-skelter posts... and it must be that I'm somehow not keeping things in order... and I'm at a loss on how to proceed. I won't be using maps, but it seems simple to determine when it's your turn etc.
Any help because at this time the frustration of herding the cats is destroying the enjoyment of the game for me.

For me, the first round of combat was when we rolled initiative and I did nothing while waiting to see how the bad guys reacted. Then I hid on my next turn and took a ready action. I think the confusion is more from my inaction first round and then just adjusting since then.
The room descriptions have been better and the zones do make sense. You're allowing for artistic license which is good for us wanting to use cover and whatnot as well. I think it is fair to ask to let us have some time adjusting to it as well.

Here is the way I considered it.
Round 1: Four of you went before the bad guys did anything. Then the bad guys opened the caskets, and attacked Khanol. Then the other two PC's went.
In round one you hid and held action for the casket to open which they didn't do on round 1. I told you that since you went before them next round you could just hold until round 2 if you wished.
My problem is that I'm giving out the necessary information, but don't feel anybody is grasping it... which is my fault. I know using the zones will take time, but initiative order and rounds have been around since 1E. I'm trying to figure out how to change my way of presenting the necessary information without having to retype it many times.

That was more my fault for being confused about when the fight happened and when things occurred. I think, at least for me, it is all good.
I feel that is just the medium showing its flaws; at a table this would be easily and quickly solved. In PbP, it can take some posts and messages to get things taken care of.

People are busy and distracted. The fact anyone is posting now is pretty good. Sometimes folks don't want to hold things up so they post early. I've done that. The GM just has to be patient and work with it. In fact I remember a certain player that kept trying to cast magic missile with a wand of magic weapon.... it became sort of a running joke. ;)

Yeah. But you guys are smarter than Dingus... He was just Charismatic as hell.
And I don't mind posting early... just everyone try to stay on the same round :-)

The "Reach" weapon ability, and the differing speeds of characters now become subjective from the DM instead of objective using a grid.
In this instance though the ghoul is faster I might allow you to get an attack on him due to the reach of your weapon.
If he is able to get behind Khanol somehow, and run away his excess speed might keep you guys from passing him.
It would help me remember if when you post your actions you might remind me that you have extra movement or reach or some other special attack, and I'll rule accordingly.
On my grid you would still be 10' short of reaching him for the attack, but I want you guys to get creative and try things instead of relying on the grid... so saying "I dash after the ghoul and use the extended reach of my weapon for an attack" is perfectly valid. I might not always agree with what you post, but I'll rule on failure forward generally.
NOTE: I'll try to get up a post late this afternoon, but might be out of pocket till later tomorrow afternoon.

I'll be out of the country on a business trip next week, and am not sure what my posting availability will be. Just FYI so you won't think I've deserted you. Feel free to interact among yourselves.

Let me apologize for my minimal engagement. This week... and probably the next two weeks are very busy at work, and my time has been limited. I'll post when I can, but don't let me slow things down. I'll pick up my involvement when things slow down a bit.
Having said that unless things go crazy this afternoon I should be able to get up a post. Looks like the consensus is to head back aboveground to the Roach?
| Griot Spelleater |
Actually, I looked back and the kobold king has some gold and pipes for us when we report back. He might have more information on undead sneaks in the city. Do we want to take care of that before the Roach or Roach first? Griot is waiting for Dumah to explain his council comment.
We could prob use an NPC list on the campaign tab when you have time DM.

Greetings all. Unfortunately I've come to the unfortunate conclusion that it is time for me to step away from these boards for a while. Life keeps throwing darts, and I don't have the concentration or motivation to continue at this time. Thanks for the opportunity, and I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. Hopefully if like settles down I can return someday... but if not Happy Gaming to you all and best wishes.
