Male Kobold Rogue 6

Is my OA against the misty vampire or the solid one as he turns misty? Not that it matters. OA= (+9 vs AC, 13, (a miss))

"No! Dead thing not get away!"

Snaggletooth's miss triggers his new power, Nasty Backswing, and he uses it in an attempt to stop Barthus from getting away. (free action, gets CA for this attack, +12 vs AC, 30, damage d4+3+2d8+3, 25 hp damage (12 hp since he is misty, I guess))If he gets past Leo and Snaggle's OAs:

Snaggletooth growls at Brujo, "Why you disappear? You not understand how to fight? I not sneaky when you not there to distract him. Errr! Now dead thing get away."

move to f4, sly flourish, (+9 vs AC, 11, ugh! a miss)

On my turn

Spoiler:
Inspiring Word 1d6=2, Attack 1d20+8=28, Damage 1d10+5=14

Additional Thunder Damage 1d6=1

Caine bolsters himself and runs after Barthus and slashes at his mist form.

Move to F4.

Please note that Barthus is not only insubstantial, he is also 15 feet above your heads. Melee attacks after the initial OAs go off do not hit him.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Including the free action attack? If so, then forget that and Snaggle still moved to f4 and still missed with a ranged sly flourish. Unless you want me to reroll?

But Snaggle still chews Brujo out for leaving the flank. He is now weaponless again.

"Enough education for one morning my friends. Perhaps we shall dance again later."

With that he dissolves into mist and rises up the wall of the chamber.

Barthus takes mist form and flys upwards. He's insubstantial and now takes half damage (including any ongoing) from any attack that hits him. Leo and Snaggle both get OAs on him.

MAP

Leo and Snaggle get OAs on Barthus
Snaggle's own turn

Caine
Cronin

Leo tries to follow Barthus's flight but the effort proves too much as he stumbles barely managing to remain on his feet.

Rolled a 1 on the OA!

Snaggletooth - I don't think you can unfortunately, although it would be a great use of the power. He's going up rather than across the floor, so he really is out of range, particularly for a small creature.

Snaggletooth and Leo try unavailingly to take advantage of Barthus' retreat into mist form, while the desecrated ground beneath them continues to do its evil work.

Desecrated Ground damage to Snaggletooth and Leo (1d6+3=8, 1d6+3=4). 8hp damage to Snaggle and 4hp damage to Leo.

MAP

PERIGIA IS UP - Apologies - left you out by accident. Roll at will.

Commander Caine - Barthus is 15 feet above your head at this point. If you'd like to revise your action, I'm happy for you to do so. Note that Snaggletooth is in F4, you also need to pick a new position.
Cronin
Fairwind
Leo
Brujo
Barthus

Cronin desperately launches a spear of moonlight at the retreating cloud.

Lance of Faith vs Ref (1d20+6=21, 1d8+6=7) My connection is too poor to let me load the map, but minimum (3) damage, radiant. +2 to an ally to hit it -- whomever's coming up next who attacks from range (Brujo?)

Male Half Elf Paladin 6th

In case my turn comes up and I'm offline:
So Leo shifts to F-5 and uses divine challenge on Barthus before employing his daily Pain of Death on the villain which has a 5 square range on which Leo rolls an 11+5 for 16 to hit which is vs Barthus's Will and a very likely miss HOWEVER it does half damage on a miss so the 3d8+4 rolls a total of 20 damage halved to 10 and until Barthus makes a save he takes 1d4 damage if he makes any attacks on his turn HOWEVER the divine challenge means he's at -2 to hit anyone other than Leo and if he doesn't attack Leo he takes 3+ Leo's Charisma modifier in radiant damage and all Leo has to do is either move adjacent or attack him to sustain this effect I believe that would be 6pts of radiant damage

"No villain you will not escape your defeat here and your resting place I assure you is our next stop!" Leo howls as he unleashes another of his techniques.
"PAIN OF DEATH!" Leo unleashes his attack as he moves to stay in range as he continues to divinely challenge the vampire hoping this forces it back into melee range for the others to defeat this menace once and for all!

Female Genasi Firesoul Wizard 7

Perigia casts Acid Arrow at the now flying vampire. 1d20+5=23 vs. Ref, (2d8+4)+1=15 acid damage and 5 ongoing.

Perigia's eyes narrow as she focuses hard on the misty figure. For a moment, acid outlines the figure of Barthus before sinking into the mist only to be irradiated from within as Cronin calls on his own resources and sends a blast of light towards the same spot.

As you watch, astonished, the mist glows and expands, coalescing around the vampire's body. Even as the battered corpse falls to the ground, the mist takes the shape of a man clad in leather armour of another era, holding aloft a symbol of Kelemvor. You only have a few seconds the recognise to image for what it is before the mist dissipates for the last time. As it does so, the corpse at your feet turns black and dissolves into a puddle of necrotic ooze around the ancient skeleton of Barthus.

Your education at his hands is complete.

OUT OF COMBAT

415XP each, taking you to 3623. Level 4 is beckoning.

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Fairwind spits on the corpse, and then adds, "Let's burn this filth."

She does the equivalent of ruffling Snaggletooth's hair (scales in his case), "Nice going, little buddy."

M Goliath Cleric 14 / Storm Speaker / Druid

Cronin breathes a sigh of relief, then goes around checking on his companions. "I don't believe he can return from that, but to be sure we should find and destroy his coffin. That will rid us of him completely.

"Good work, Snaggletooth."

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Snaggletooth smiles and blushes at the attention he is getting from the others. "Just trying to help mighty heroes. Kneebiter still in danger. Where we go next?"

After asking the question, he begins to wander the room, searching for the scattered daggers.

perception roll (d20+9, 22) search the room for daggers, weapons, and anything else of value

As he is searching the room, Snaggle looks up and asks Cronin, "If Dead Thing's body is over there, why we need to find his cof-fin?" He says the word as if it was strange to him. You get the feeling that kobolds have different burial rituals. "Is that where he keeps his treasures?"

Revise action.

"WTF!" Shouts Caine as he looks on at the floating mist.

Snaggletooth scours the room, delving into the coffin Perigia accidentally burst open with her misplaced magic missile and rootling through the barrels. The barrels are particularly distressing, containing as they do Barthus' emergency meal supplies of coagulated blood. Hastily leaving them, he considers the other unbroken coffins.

In the broken coffin, he finds quite a variety of equipment, no doubt culled from victims down the years.

Barthus was discriminating. Apart from three creeper daggers which Snaggletooth threw himself, there is the mace used by the vampire, and a longsword which shimmers strangely as though unable to decide on its shape.

The kobold is completely unable to identify them himself.

M Goliath Cleric 14 / Storm Speaker / Druid

"Snaggletooth, pass over that mace, would you?" Cronin asks. He wants to inspect it as we take a brief rest.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Snaggletooth gladly hands the mace over to Cronin, "too big for me to use anyway" he says under his breath. He brings the longsword to Fairwind. "Is this something you can use, maybe? Too big for me. It sort of look like your sword. Maybe magic?"

Fairwind and Leo are the two longsword users in the group. Fairwind has been nicer to Snaggletooth than Leo. But you two can decide which of you gets to keep it. Perhaps after Perigia IDs it...

Spoiler:
is anything in the equipment of the victims usuable? any small clothes like Darano halfling's perhaps? a cloak, maybe a backpack or pouch?

I posted similar in Fabes game, but I'm still sick as dog. And I'm not sure just how frequently I'll be on. If Brujo is needed for anything would you mind DMing him abit :(

"Why you disappear? You not understand how to fight? I not sneaky when you not there to distract him. Errr! Now dead thing get away." The annoying wine of the kobold fills his mind.

Brujo shoots a shoots a sharp, hatefilled look to the kobold.

"You have no right to talk about fighting, or tactics you rejected dragonspawn. All your kind knows is how to skulk and prey on weak. I'm surprised that you even decided to help." The blue fire beings to burn with new intensity as he speaks

"Me not understand. No...I know all to well! See him, him, HER!" Brujo points to Leo, Caine and Fairwind, "Ask them if I don't know how to fight! Ask them what it feels like to be in a fight with me!"

"You, you are the one who should ask if they what it is to fight. You came to us for help to find your friend, and you've done very little in my eyes to help. Other than now I can hardly remeber the last time I saw you enter a battle, let alone found anything of true danger to us. For all I know this is just a trap. A way you pesky things can get revenge on the battle you lost us earlier."

Brujo sees the looks the others give him. He turns a cold eye and sits by himself along the wall.

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Fairwind just looks levelly at Brujo.

"Mighty fine sword there, mind if I have it, preacher?" she asks Leo.

Sorry you're feeling so horrible. Take care of yourself and get well. I'll take care of Brujo with pleasure.

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

I am also blergh, hence brevity of posts. Will drop you a line when I get doc's appointment.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Snaggletooth cowers for a second, visibly shaken by Brujo's outburst, but then regains his composure. "scary blue flame elf is a mighty warrior, yes is true. I have watched him shoot lightning and drag enemies across field. you right, scary blue flame elf, Snaggletooth just little sneaky kobold. I not mighty warrior like you. But Kneebiter my friend. I not have lots of them. I fight just as hard as you now. I not have blue flames or lightning or magic weapon but I fight big scary dead thing. with this little dagger." he shows Brujo his dagger. "all Snaggletooth have is sneaky. when i sneaky, i get to be mighty hero like all of you. when i not sneaky, i am just little kobold with a dagger." he pauses for a second. "that why i get angry at you, blue elf warrior, i get angry and scared. dead thing scare Snaggletooth much. i glad he gone. he said he want to ed-u-cate me. i think he mean teach. scary dead thing did teach me something. he taught me that if i be brave like mighty heroes, i can be mighty hero, too." he chokes down his feelings. "Kneebiter still out there. I help now. I not be poor little kobold. I be sneaky mighty warrior!" there is new strength in his voice. "Now, what we do next?"

Brujo, that is the best that you are going to get for an apology from a kobold. Snaggletooth is trying to be more than he was. And now you know why. :)

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Fairwind smiles, "Friends're hard to come by, gotta keep 'em."

"Y'all got anything our friend can use, keep himself safe?" she asks the rest of the group.

Snaggletooth's explorations turn up a battered belt pouch

Spoiler:
containing 20gp
belonging to an earlier victim. The belt pouch is quite usable.

Barthus' mace is a demonic weapon indeed and the longsword also proves to have interesting properties.

Mace: (level 5 magic weapon) Enhancement: +1 attack rolls and damage rolls
Critical: +1d6 necrotic damage
Property: When you drop an enemy to 0 hit points or fewer with a melee attack made with this weapon, gain 5 temporary hit points.

Longsword: (level 6 magic weapon) Enhancement: +2 attack rolls and damage rolls
Critical: +2d6 damage

Power (Encounter • Polymorph): Minor Action. Change the weapon into a different weapon from any melee category (simple, military, or superior). This effect lasts until the end of the encounter, or until you end it as a minor action.

These investigations take a little time, so this counts as a short rest. Please use any healing surges you wish to restore yourselves and note the results in your profiles.

Using two surges; Puts me at 44hp and 7 left for the day

*Sluggishly heads back to bed to try and sleep

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Also heading to bed! If Leo doesn't mind, Fairwind really needs a magic weapon, especially one that she can change into a short sword or other light blade as the whim takes her. Used 2 surges, on 31 hp.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

back up to 43 hp, used 1 healing surge, 8 left for the day.

After a moment Leo sighs and gets back to his feet before approaching where the vampire had just dispersed looking for the ancient holy symbol he so briefly noticed.
"In answer to your question its so this fellow doesn't come back, insuring his spirit passes on in case we need to come back through here," Leo answers the Snaggletooth's question.

"So what's next for our merry band?"

Back to full hp.

Cronin does not interfere in the debate between Brujo and the kobold.

Cronin inspects the mace. "Fitting weapon for an undead, not for anyone else," he remarks. Perhaps the monks can disenchant it for us -- residuum knows no provenance.

"Yes, we must find the master's coffin -- he would not keep it among those of his spawn here."

Not immediately noticing any exits from the room beside the door we just entered (unless I'm missing something), Perigia begins to search the room for any possible hidden doors.

Although Perigia realises there is no obvious way out of the chamber, she sees little evidence of secret doors either.

"Good idea if we're going to rest up here we ought to give this chamber a once over to make sure its secure," Leo nods as he wearily gets up and takes a look round.

Spent 2 healing surges left on 5 left for today, roll a 14+7 for 21 for his Perception check to make sure there aren't any other ways into the chamber taking note of the direction Barthus had been heading when he tries to flee

Leo walks round the chamber taking note of anything out of the ordinary giving the now broken barrels of blood a wide berth although he will see if they're showing anything unusual like a trapdoor in the floor but given what Barthus was it was more likely some small hole he could seep through.
Still after making his rounds he'll take the first watch before turning in himself.

Does Barthus's remains disappear entirely and was he carrying an actual holy symbol of Kelemvor I mean one that doesn't disappear along with his remains?

The holy symbol of Kelemvor was only seen as Barthus' soul broke free and you had a brief vision of the man he once was.

Amid the bones of your former adversary, Leo finds a gold holy symbol of Bane. It is, for all its worrying connotations, a fine piece of work. Looking at it, Leo thinks it would be worth about 75gp.

Scrutinising the walls with more success than Perigia, Leo realises that the brickwork is very slightly different. As he surmised, there is a small gap through which a vampire in misty form could pass, but it also seems to him that there was once a door here. Perhaps there is still a door here, cunningingly disguised.

"I think this might hide another door, but I just need to confirm its secure if we're going to rest up," he points to the area he's spied stepping back to let them have a closer look.
"We could break it down now or simply seal up that hole in case someone else comes in via that opening," Leo suggests wondering what the others make of it.

"I not want scary dead thing coming back and biting my neck like he did yours." Snaggletooth responds to Leo. "Is this cof-fin a gem or weapon where death thing keep soul? Kobolds have few legends like that." He is still trying to understand the concept of a "coffin" and hasn't connected the ones in the room with the word.

will someone please explain it to him so I can stop this

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

No. Oh, alright then. :D

"Look here," Fairwind says as she kicks a coffin, "This here's a coffin, wooden box fer to be puttin' the dead in under the ground. Now quit sayin' 'coffin'."

Male Kobold Rogue 6

"So, scary dead thing have a box, too, where he hides or lives!" Snaggletooth begins to understand Leo's and Cronin's words. "That must be where his cloud was going when he run away from us. If his 'death box' lets him come back from dead, we need to find the coffin and smash it!" Then he quiets down as he realized that the others have already come to that conclusion. He looks at Fairwind. "Kobolds don't put dead ones in boxes before we put them in ground. We just dig hole and throw them in. Maybe that why dead kobolds stay dead and not come back like Scary Dead Thing." He seems to ponder this for a minute. "We should keep moving. I don't like it here. Too many death boxes, i mean coffins."

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Fairwind smiles, "Couldn't agree with ya more. What say we go and pound Scary Dead Thing's death box to dirt?"

Offering her short sword to Snaggletooth, she asks, "You up for that?" with a grin.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

"Yessss!" Snaggletooth says with a smile. He tests the shortsword with a couple of practice swings and looks at Fairwind. "You sure you no need sword any more?"

Fairwind has just become Snaggletooth's non-kobold bestest friend. :)

F Half-elf Ranger 4 (multiclass - Rogue)

Fairwind draws her non-magical longsword and demonstrates her trademark double sword slash with it and her new magical acquisition.

"Yeah, I'm sure." she says with a smile.

"Sure we can break the door down. But has any checked if it's trapped or something?"

Snaggletooth hears the word 'trapped' and his face lights up. "I know traps. Sneaky kobolds use them all the time. Let me see."

Snaggletooth approaches the wall with a cool professionalism that none of you have seen from him before. He sniffs the stonework carefully, tapping seemingly random bricks and waiting between each tap. Almost at once it seems, he slips a claw into the small gap and something clicks faintly. There is a slight shimmer in the fabric of reality and the illusion falls away.

Unlike other doors you have seen in the catacombs, this one has been covered with sheets of metal. The edges show signs of rust.

Snaggletooth

Spoiler:

The secret door itself is not trapped, merely secret. You realise that the metal sheets are a comparatively recent addition.

"Well... what have you found, Snaggletooth?"

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Edited due to realization that door is not opened, just uncovered.

"Door not trapped, just sneaky. Dead things not like kobolds. Kobolds use traps all the time, everywhere, in their tunnels." He points to the metal reinforcements, "That metal part is new. Maybe door falling apart, need repair?"

Rev

Spoiler:
is it locked? or just barricaded with the metal? I was going to try to pick the locks without thieves' tools, but can I do that?

Snaggletooth

Spoiler:

Not locked.

The only thing that is different about it is covered in more recent metal sheeting rather than the grilles you've seen so far. The sheeting has rust on the edges.
