I think an arcane caster-type would be valuable.

Two new recruits will do the trick.

Besides a rogue/martial character, do you guys have any other input, requests, or preferences?
Because of Eunomia and Harmond's departure, should we also seek an arcane caster?

I think it may be worth mentioning what ‘kingmaker’ roles are on the table.

(I mean as in Vixen is the Royal Enforcer, for example.)

I’m certainly fine with an arcane caster, but for example if a player is passionate about barbarian or bard or oracle, I would pick that player for being passionate about the role rather than what the role is.

Thank you for your input! I'm putting together the recruitment post now.

@everyone, especially Wonky,
Here’s a cool new thing VV can do!

Startling Appearance (Ex): At 5th level, a vigilante learns to use the element of surprise to his advantage, startling foes that are unaware of his presence. Whenever a vigilante with this ability attempts an attack against a foe that is completely unaware of the vigilante’s presence (usually due to Stealth or invisibility), the foe is treated as flat-footed for the rest of the vigilante’s turn (uncanny dodge or a similar ability prevents this effect unless the vigilante is at least 4 levels higher than the foe with uncanny dodge). The foe also takes a –4 penalty on attacks made against the vigilante until the start of the vigilante’s next turn.

Falchos’ story reminds me of a They Might Be Giants song.

Trees link

Trees lyrics:
Tell the moon you've seen the serpent
Found the sword and walked among the
Trees

Trip the forest through the branches
On the limb you fell the nest of
Bees

They have a new album, so their YouTube channel just refreshed old playlists that I didn’t know about. “Trees” sounds generically questish, except the hero ends up bumbling in the exact way Falchos did… well, almost. He didn’t anger any owlbears.

That was my interpretation hearing it yesterday for the first time. Cracked me up to see Falchos “fell the nest of bees!”

Greetings and salutations! Thank you for the opportunity to join the worthies of Tamlyn in their adventures. This is, in fact, my first play-by-post rodeo, so please let me know of any faux pas I make. I assure you I'm quite happy to receive constructive criticism.

I'm in the process of updating my character sheet with spells memorized, encumbrance, rules links, and other assorted miscellanea. Once complete I'll post here with my character's alias.

Hi everybody, and thanks so much for letting me join! I've played by post many times before, although I'm new to the Paizo forums. If anyone wants to tie their backstory in with Katrine's, let me know and we can work something out. Like Pelipe, I'm interested to hear what set my submission apart from the many other great characters people submitted.

Also, I didn't realize it was winter in-game when I made the character, so I bought some horse feed for Katrine's horse and mule.

Welcome to the game! Speaking for myself, an interesting backstory is the first thing I look for, especially if it has been tailored to fit the premise of the campaign, rather than being generic. I like characters whose ability scores, feats, and skills match their backstories, even if that results in a build that isn't optimized for combat encounters.

What drew you to this particular game? Was it the Kingmaker AP itself? Vayelan's DMing style? Did you read a bit of our game thus far? Just curious, as starting at 5th level instead of 1st sacrifices some key in-game moments of a character's 'baptism of fire' development.

I've always been intrigued by the Kingmaker AP, the idea of building and running a nation, but have only played the first module. This was also the only recruitment for a standard non-PFS 1st edition Pathfinder game. I did read through the gameplay, starting around post 3,951, as well as back through a couple pages of discussion. The game read as enjoyable, the discussion as cooperative and civil - all elements I find important in tabletop gaming, and assume are more so in this format.

I prefer starting at 1st level when possible, as I find it really helps shape the RP elements of a character - a single early encounter or action can give rise to a life-long personality element or schtick. This was one of the reasons I decided not to go too overboard describing Antonín’s personality, because characters so often turn out going in a different direction than anticipated once you play them. (The other was some advice I received about keeping it simple.)

I've always wanted to play Kingmaker. I liked Vayelan's vibe, he seems like a nice guy who knows what he's doing, and the fact that this game has lasted so long is a very good omen for the future. Too many times I've started in promising games only to have them peter out while the characters are still at 1st level. As for starting at 5th level, I never mind that. It is a different dynamic than starting at the beginning, but the important part is that I get to play! I've read a little of your game thus far. The sheer length is kind of intimidating though.

I was drawn to the kingmaker AP because I've played mostly in Homebrew games so far and not experienced a lot of the Pathfinder world itself. Being on the forums here, I felt that might help me understand a bit more about the setting itself.

Having read and seen Vayelan's DMing style for a while, I do appreciate good descriptions and also how Vayelan lets the story wander a bit into homebrew twists and turns rather than making it 100% strict to the story.

So far I have read some of your stories (about 30 pages so far) and enjoyed the characters and gameplay. I'll likely be reading the game from the beginning to understand what is going on, but that won't stop me from being ready right away as my character doesn't exactly know what has happened in the past.

Katrine will definitely enjoy having musicians in the party, even though she can't carry a tune herself! I'm glad to see that Pelipe can cook too. I bought a cooking kit for Katrine, but since she doesn't have ranks in the skill the best she can do with it is 'hot, fresh, and edible'.

She can hunt and forage for ingredients like the pro she is though, make reasonably accurate maps, and turn the hides from her kills into all sorts of leather goods!

I like everyone's enthusiasm already. I thought the addition of two musicians would be great for the next festival, whether it's the next Crystalhue or a sooner one. I also thought Katrine's Craft (Leatherwork) and Profession (Cartographer) would present good crunch and RP synergy with both Addy and Wonky.

.....

To kickstart the discussion of introducing our new characters, the first idea to come to mind is to have them approach the ruins the party is currently exploring just as the forest drakes return to their lair. Thus, we may get that "baptism by fire" after all, as you must contend with a trio of wounded, angry drakes.

*snorts laughter* Musician. If you call my appalling playing worthy of that title.

I could easily see Pelipe quietly playing violin on a lunch break from her travels. Having come across the ruins (without the context of what lives there) she has settled in for about an hour without incident. The ruins would appeal to her curiosity. It's just the type of spot to gather some knowledge about the area (something she lacks at) and perhaps its history. Her horse would be tied up next to her on the far side of the ruins and she'd be sitting on a large stone outcropping at the edge of it.

The reason she would be playing is, she's found that most beasts that would be dwelling in such a place would flee from the strange sound of her violin, as most have done before (deer, bears, etc). Those rules don't apply to wounded, pissed-off drakes. Would that work for you or are there things further in?

Should us three newbies be traveling together when we come upon the ruins? Having all three plus the original group meet independently is rather improbable.

I would think you guys being a trio works best.

As for tie-ins……… oh, tempting, but VV is just getting her life back together.

She hates has some differences with Garess, so I will enjoy having a PC connected to him!

Wonky is of the Green Faith and Addison is a Shelyn follower, so a religious tie can work.

Addy also lived in the wild, her parents being a barbarian and a huntress.

She ended up in Silverhall at the age of nine. So she could tie in with a rough and tumble type or a socialite type. Her mother (Kelsie Lane—Mrs. Lane to her students) took girls out for training purposes, which is a possible tie in for a female archer around Addy’s age. She’s 23… or maybe 24 by now.

A tie-in with my character is not a must, but if anyone sees potential in the above, that’s the bit on my end that has potential (I think).

Welcome Katrine, Antonín, and Pelipe!

I play Wonky Prong, Jr. I chose to be fairly silent and aloof during the recruitment process, but rest assured that I have read through all submissions with avid amusement. How excited am I to have THREE new players/characters with which to explore and create the kingdom of Tamlyn?!

The answer is 'very'. Thanks, GM!

I'm Dinketry on the boards, or Paul IRL. I live in New Zealand as an expatriated American. I'm quite active on these boards, having gamed or GM'd multiple PF1, PF2, and PACS games over the years here. I have to say that y'all are in for a treat with this game. It is CHILLLLLLLLLLLLL, but that's not to say that we don't ramp up the excitement level when necessary, no sirree!

Antonin/Katerine:
Katrine Thalian wrote:

It does sound improbable to be sure. You, being a ranger Katerine, would definitely make the journey easier. I would like to say that we met recently on the road. Perhaps a day or two ago. Also, maybe it was getting toward evening and Pelipe was cooking in a grove adjacent to the road. In that rest area, she had a meal being prepped and it smelled good? Perhaps that drew in your characters initially? Perhaps it was the practicing of her violin that drew you?

Well VV, perhaps being a subtle follower of Abadar and Shelyn or just being around the same age (24) would be appealing on the road. Also, not being evil bandits may help our group come together.

---

I too am thankful the GM chose 3, Wonky Prong, Jr.

As for how to pronounce Pelipe's name, because you asked for detail, I will give it! Her name will come out as (Pel-ee-pae) with a strong P sound at the beginning and much more soft P at the end. If it helps, think of saying it with a soft Spanish or French accent. Her last name is sounded with a break and a bit of tongue blocking your mouth, (Lighht-dtriv-ahr), which almost could sound German if you will.

In character, it would be very easy to recognize by how she pronounces her name, that she comes from education at least. A poor Brevoy citizen would slaughter the presentation of her name, and perhaps that was the initial reason for the evolution of the uniqueness of her name's sound.

Newbies:

Perhaps Antonín and Katrine have been working together for a bit longer? This way all 3 of us don't meet randomly on the road. He lacks any wilderness skills, and partnering with a guide would make sense to him (he doesn't need to hunt due to his ring of sustenance, but he certainly can't navigate his way through the wild.) His elitist jerkishness might have helped assuage Katrine's doubts about him being a hag in disguise - surely such a creature would actually make an effort to get Katrine to like/trust them?

Violin music in the wilderness would definitely draw Antonín's attention!

EDIT: Pronunciation of Antonín can be found here (link). (I named him after Antonín Dvořák and Niccolò Paganini.)

Newbies:
Sounds good to me, Antonin. His attitude would be simultaneously annoying and reassuring to Katrine for that very reason. How about if the two of them met at a roadside inn en route to Tamlyn? Antonin might have asked the innkeeper about a guide, and Katrine was known in the area as a skilled ranger.

As for Pelipe, meeting her on the road sounds good to me. Music and the smell of good cooking would get Katrine's attention for sure!

@Vermilion Vixen: Katrine was born and raised in Cordelon to the south and didn't leave until she was fully trained, so I don't think the trainer link would work. It will be fun to RP Green Faith stuff with Wonky though!

Katrine's name is pronounced Ka-TREEN THA-lee-ahn. Those familiar with elven names will recognize Thalian as one such, although Katrine herself is definitely not elven or half-elven. (Her stepmother is half-elven and her father chose to take her name when they married.) Her accent is an odd mix of Elven and rural River Kingdoms, one unique to Cordelon.

DM Vayalan, given how uncommon changelings are, would it take a Knowledge: Nature or Knowledge: Arcana check to identify Katrine as a changeling? Or is it part of the local folklore? Either way is fine with me.

Katrine Thalian wrote:

If they got close enough to notice any oddities about Katrine's appearance, most locals would jump to the conclusion that she was some manner of fey, or at perhaps cursed by the fey.

Knowledge Nature or Arcana would be needed to correctly identify her as a changeling.

Correction: Locals in Tamlyn would assume that Katrine is connected to the fey somehow.

In the regions near the Hooktongue Slough, west of Tamlyn and the Narlmarches, where the party will soon travel through, there is a bit of a problem with hags, so they may jump to other, more problematic conclusions about Katrine.

Agreed, all of this sounds great to me.
For you Katrine, Pelipe doesn't hide her spellcasting ability to those who spend even a short amount of time with her (you'd have seen her light a fire with magic, cause a breeze to blow when she was too hot, she flavors her food with magic on top of her delicious cooking, etc). For this reason, despite her being proficient in transmutation spells and changing form, it might be reassuring to Katrine that Pelipe is open about it. A hag wouldn't likely be with either her magic or her shapechanging ability.

Well, I think we are mostly ready when you are GM.

My apologies. Since we're at an exciting point, with the two halves of the new party about to meet up, I meant to have a post or two up last night.

@DM, I thought VV was with Ahto, but if your call is that she was in mid jump when drakes showed up, she’ll full-run to stand in front of Melianse.

But in this case, there would be no readied action.

The drakes arrived after Vixen stepped outside with Ahto.

The only one not outside is Wonky, who said she was staying in the bedroom doorway.
Owing to the size of the drakes and gaps in the roof and walls, Wonky does have line of sight to at least one drake, although it would get partial cover from her current position.

Nice map, GM!

I like it too. I think Storm is missing from the map. Which color drake is he attacking Katrine?

The inter-actable map is a very cool feature. I moved my token on it to my intended destination; not too presumptuous, I hope?

Also, whenever I post, I have to reload the page several times before my post appears. Does anyone know if the page reload is necessary, and if it is, does anyone know of a fix?

EDIT: Of course, this post went right through. Not sure what's causing the issue when it happens, which is most of the time.

You don’t need to reload for Paizo’s sake. I mean, the post is on the board… it just doesn’t immediately show up.

(I know this because even when I can’t see the post, I see…

…and yeah, this post actually showed up right away. Sometimes I need to refresh several times to see it, but the notation that I posted is there.

When posting on Paizo, I always copy my post before hitting the submit button. There are times when it will error and cause your post to be deleted. Then, it sometimes will not post your writing for many seconds. I will hit reload just to verify it went through, but like VV said, it will show up (most times). I've had instances where it doesn't show up. For that reason, I just make sure it posts by refreshing until it shows up.

^ Good habit… especially if you edit an existing post or your profile. I hate myself when I don’t select-all-copy and Paizo literally eats my words.

(And this post did NOT show up, but I saw the message confirming I posted at 9:46.)

@Antonín: I have noticed that quirk, too. Often when I submit a post, I will need to refresh the page once or twice for it to appear.

@Katrine: I've added a token for Storm using an image I found after Googling "wolfdog." If you have an image you would like to use instead, feel free to copy it onto the map document or send it to me.
