That's a great point, with you two around it's essentially a "don't roll a 1" situation.

With Blue Thorn's help Agnes manages to coax Laika down.
Having had to sit still for so long getting measured and fitted, the wolf knows that she has no ulterior motives (and sometimes treats).
Once in the cellar, Agnes snifss deeply. "Mmmm, as beans, coffee smells just as good."

Adun enjoys his breakfast, feeling more hungry than normal after the previous day’s escapades. After a quick wash he dresses, adding the hooded cloak and mask of The Pale Knight before going up with the others.
”Thanks Darius,” he says, accepting the spell and seeing his gauntlet flare to light. ”Let’s see what’s down here,” he mutters, raising his lit gauntlet and peering into the gloom.

"Hold on." the Beast says, before stopping to carefully examins some of the supply boxes. "Yes, I thought so. These boxes have been opened. It looks like someone's been skimming a little here, a little there, to keep from being noticed. I think there's also a concealed door over there." he says, gesturing toward the northwest wall before heading over to it and looking for a way to open it.
I'm not sure where the door is exactly, GM, if my token needs to be in a different place feel free to move it.
Aeon Throne : Hell's Masked Rebels
Sorry, this week has been busier than I expected!
Reynard is able to find the hidden release on the secret door. Opening it up he reveals a long, damp hallway that opens to the southeast into a large reservoir of calm, dark water. A wooden pier extends twenty feet into the water, while another twenty feet out rises the top half of a statue of a beautiful elven woman. A foul smell, like that of rotting meat, comes from somewhere near the pier. Two holes have been knocked into the northwest walls to provide access to chambers beyond.

Would the smell allow Carl a Knowledge check to determine what produced it?
Aeon Throne : Hell's Masked Rebels
That would be a Knowledge Nature check, I believe.
Entering into the room, the Pale Knight, Pack, Blue Thorn, and the Fiend all spot the partially eaten remains of a man wedged among the pier’s pilings at the northwestern-most edge, just under the lip of the stone floor. It can also be seen that across the reservoir is an opening to what appears to be a subterranean canal network, which makes sense with what you had learned of Nan's smuggling ventures.

Carl and the Nightmare Beast can both agree that the putrid smell is indeed from the rotting corpse in the water and not from any other source. -2 traits, one of which is a Hells Rebels campaign trait
-No drawbacks for additional traits.
How could I not dot this? Now, to decide what kind of Vigilante. Probably a Zealot or Warlock.
I'm thinking a Hangman, but flavored as a masked grappler ala El Santo or Blue Demon.
I've got a Spiderman style concept cooking up that would be great for this! Count me interested!
Here's Digger's submission alias. Need to do the equipment and the delicious fluff, but he's otherwise pretty much done.
I'm thinking a worshiper of Shelyn, using a Glaive for defending. Noticing the negative influence of Thrune on the city's culture and art, he takes matter into his own hands.
Going base vigilante since the archetypes don't really add anything.
Hmm. On the one hand, SO interesting.
On the other hand, I'm already in a fair number of games.
Gotta ask the following because it seems so perfect a character.
Any chance you'd consider changing the racial restriction? I'm thinking of something like a person who pretends to be human but is a Cat of Vengeance at night (Catfolk). Or a Kitsune, of course.
Mechanically, a high disguise skill would pull it off. Admittedly the disguise rules for appearing as a different race have modifiers that are absurdly low (fur? No, just a genetic condition :-))
Edit: And if the GM DOES allow it I'm hereby calling dibs on the Catfolk becoming a Cat idea :-) :-)
Equipment done. Anthony is a loud playboy by day, but at night he stalks agents of the Thrune as ...Assassino di Diavoli!
Actually, I'm going to have to regretfully retract my earlier interest. I don't think I have the time to invest in another campaign. :(
Can Tieflings roll on the Variant Ability table?
pauljathome wrote: Any chance you'd consider changing the racial restriction? I can see the allure of what you're going for but the build guidelines for this one are locked down. I guess the only reason is that they direct builds towards a vision I have for the campaign's tone and esthetic.
As to what I have in mind, I'll write up more and put a link in the threads header in the next couple days. (Watching sick kids today but excited about this and wanted to get the word out there) Suffice it to say I'm thinking neutral-dark for a comedy-drama/light-dark alignment.
Ouachitonian wrote: Can Tieflings roll on the Variant Ability table? Yup, if they would like to they can roll to replace the Darkness spell-like ability they can.
@gm that tone is kind of what I was imagining. For my guy, I'm going for a luchador mixed with classic Fantomas or even Diabolik. A freedom-fighter/terrorist who might lurk in any shadow. Unlike Anthony, a promising actor with foppish tendencies. He naturally tends more to fight law than evil. Diabolists, to him, are like Nazis to me: dangers to end.
Ah, yes, we are actually doing this! There is one and only problem with an all vigilante party. Nobody in the party is a full baber. Any way to fix that? Or is that usually not a problem?
The Avenger specialization gets full BaB. That won't be a problem.
Also, dotting. :)
DoubleGold wrote: Ah, yes, we are actually doing this! There is one and only problem with an all vigilante party. Nobody in the party is a full baber. Any way to fix that? @DoubleGold The Avenger specialization on the base vigilante uses full BAB and has many fighter-like vigilante talents.
I might try something. Never did vigilante before
Perhaps THE CHEF! By day he is an ordinary inn cook, by night he serves up JUSTICE!
Dotting.
Full disclosure: I'm currently playing in another Hell's Rebels PbP that's (hopefully) on a brief hiatus.
Also, I'm running a Hell's Rebels PbP game inherited from another GM.
Does this disqualify me?

Thanks, it has been a while since I read up on the class and I've been trying to search the website and all my books what archetype did that, when really it was an ability in the base class it self.
@CaptainFord I think I know just the build you're thinking of ;)
So excited for this.
I'm really kind of struggling with what I want to play. So many things to choose from. Leaning on one of the caster archetypes but I'm also itching for Avenger. Crossing off Magical Child though, not my cup of tea and the spell list isn't worth it in my mind.
I have two questions,
1. Can we play and class after taking 1 level of vigilante, or is it a xpected that you only go vigilante.
2. would you allow a one time feat that would simply be a home brew (extra social talent feat) that would only be for duel identity using the same rules as vigilante, that way someone could go raven ranger class or some of the others that were clearly made for the hells rebels that would use the same basic premises of a all vigilante group with more options, because I figured since you would lose the feat if you did it that would cost the person that truly want d to play something else.
I’m of the Opinion that if you don’t ask you won’t know
I would be very interested in this but was wondering about PFS credit?
DarkWingD wrote: I have two questions... Good questions that I agree needed to be asked.
Number two is off the table, but number one is something I'm still personally wrestling with. I intentially left multiclassing out of my build specs because I wasn't sure where I stood on it. The first level dip into Vigilante cheapens the premise for me, but a variant multiclass is a little more reasonable.
In honesty, this is more of an experiment than anything. Prestige Classes will start to kick on in book two, so we have time to feel the party out. I would at most be open to talking about retraining into VMC around the same time if it seems like it's needed fpr the party. But off the starting line I'm interested in a group of raw vigilantes living double lives, not knowing each other's secrets or who is who between social and covert scenes.
Kegdrainer wrote: I would be very interested in this but was wondering about PFS credit? Possible, would decide that once the group was assembled. If done it would be in campaign mode with a character number that's locked up until we're completed.

That is a lot of Hell's Rebels experience, though I certainly do not want to steer anyone away. It may factor into a "tie breaker" situation, but ultimately what's important to me in building a group is ideas, quality of writing, and a consistent presence on the boards.
Making up my character, putting down the basics
My brain is exploding with so many ideas that I might run into the problem of not finding one I'm happy with, but I'm definitely about to get cracking.
@GM Bugman: I saw you mentioned Variant Multiclassing. Is that on the table? I'm all on board with the Vigilante thing - I don't even intend to take a prestige class - but VMC might help us distinguish our characters a bit more.
Also, I think I'm actually going to Do The Thing and play a Magical Child, so anything that builds on theme *and* gives me some more options to work with would be appreciated.
Inspiration has struck so dotting I am.
Also I like the idea of VMC to create variables even if only the Vigilante can use theVMC skills

If it helps, my two coppers would be that if folks stick to the superhero theme, you could reflavor a number of class abilities. And some archetypes to other classes are clearly hero homages (Mysterious Avenger Swashbuckler, for example).
My initial spider hero concept was actually an unchained rogue, and flavored things like Danger Sense and Trapfinding to be his "spider sense". Naturally, it is up to you as GM to decide, I'm just as good with an all vigilante party (that in itself makes for some good challenges and opportunities to play with), so my concept pro ably won't change too much.
Speaking of which, are any folks planning on going with a noble character as their social identity? I'm curious to hear what other folks have planned.
I'm keeping an eye on this thread. I've always wanted to play Hell's Rebels and have submitted some various incarnation of this character to several different games but never selected. I could probably convert him from a Slayer to a Vigilante Avenger. I'll wait for the GM's post on what he has in mind before I decide to apply or not.

CaptainFord wrote: Speaking of which, are any folks planning on going with a noble character as their social identity? I'm curious to hear what other folks have planned. Yes. I'm still working out the details, but more or less this is the skeleton: my submission will be a minor noble of a major house. Like a lot of nobles, she's been afforded the best education, which included a period of study in Tian Xia, where she met and fell in with a rather undesirable lot - worshipers of Sun Wukong. Her traditional education included things like history, etiquette, music, and landscape painting, while her unofficial education will be in the core tenants of the Monkey King - Freedom, Deception, Revolution.
Having returned home to Kintargo, she's having trouble adjusting, as she now sees Thrune's oppressive hand everywhere. Her family is still firmly Asmodean, and she's yet to come out to them as no longer in the fold. Instead, she dithers, conflicted: her social persona is that of a dilettante noblewoman who "earns" a living as a landscape painter of middling skill (or of some skill, if I sink skill focus/social grace into Artistry). She says the right things in the company of the "right" people, and hates every minute of it.
At night, she frequents revolutionary cafes and bookstores, and consumes radical political theory based around personal liberty fostered through a kind and enabling state. It is just a matter of time before events force her to get off the fence...
Since I expressed interest it seems only polite to say that I'll NOT be submitting a character.
No character concept was really, really calling to me and I'm in enough games already.
Still seems like a really good concept, mind :-). And lots of fun
I really like this concept and it just so happens that I have a character ready for just such an adventure. :)
I'd like to offer Doreen Makgree for consideration. She's a core vigilante. I hadn't thought about multiclassing or prestige classes, but going Shadowdancer is a possibility if it helps to differentiate the characters' abilities further down the road.
After some thought over warm coffee, I've come to a consensus.
Variant Multiclass is legal, I believe it doesn't detract from what this game is trying to achieve and agree that it allows characters to stand apart more while still crouching in the narrow Vigilante window. The feat sacrifice versus the VMC gains feel balanced with other archetype, feat, and trait options.
Other Multiclassing will not be allowed. I've never been so strict with build guidelines, but this is kind of how this idea needs to be run.
Prestige Classes will be discussed with the group after book 1 is completed.
While other classes could thematically be made into something that belongs in the "Organization of Heroes" style game, they are not options for this one.
A document of the character creation guidelines has been linked at the top of the thread to have all the information in one place.
Never done VMC before. But Anthony would benefit quite a bit from Monk ...lemme try this out.
Quick question: are you opposed to pre-game crafting? It won't break my concept, it'll just mean I have to be a bit more careful with my webs due to lack of ammunition.
CaptainFord wrote: Quick question: are you opposed to pre-game crafting? It won't break my concept, it'll just mean I have to be a bit more careful with my webs due to lack of ammunition. I am craft friendly, pre-crafting ammunition is fine.
Decided to stick with straight vigilante. Sure, the damage boost is nice, but not nice enough to give up armor and Anthony definitely isn't a wise man, heh. If there were rules for a Brawler VMC maybe, but otherwise I'll pass. Cool system though.
What is your thought on the Shield-Trained trait. Its technically a religious trait requiring a follower of Gorum. However, I've always felt its mechanics are more of a combat trait. Would you allow non followers of Gorum to take the trait?
@GM Bugman
Since there's plenty of Avengers and Stalkers around, I'm working on a Warlock concept instead. Access to arcane spells seems like it would be good. I'm still hammering out the details, both story and build. But I wanted to talk about Mystic Bolts. The way they're written, they're... not an attractive option. Very few things work with them. It's easier to just use your given martial proficiency and just hit with weapons.
I'm okay with this route, as VMC with Magus will allow me to be a decent combatant regardless, it'd just be nice to be able to use Mystic Bolts as a primary feature rather than "just hitting touch AC" sometimes as it seems to be leaning.
If you have any thoughts on the feature, let me know. Otherwise I'll just be using some kind of weapon and just falling back to the bolts as needed.
I would just like to add that even though Doreen is geared towards melee finesse combat at the moment, I wouldn't mind taking the archery route instead to fill a different niche in the party.

I'm cooking up a noble. Took the Scion feat, too, so she's from a major house: Vashnarstill specifically. Angle is her social identity is largely academically inclined with no political ambition, so the house sees her as a good "apolitical" choice to take over business operations one day. But while she studies tomes by daylight, she's fighting evil by moonlight...
