Hearing Marcos's commentary, Sajan's smile fades and he focuses on the next sprite. Adopting his signature tiger stance, Sajan steps into place, plants his right foot firmly on the ground in preparation for his attack.

Sajan twists his body starting at the hips and throwing his shoulder into the motion, concentrating all the momentum into his left foot as he kicks at the closest sprite. Thoralox's focus on the blade and fist that had vexed him proves disastrous! Dawn's piercing light, and Laszlo's hail of alchemicals are too much for even a dragon, and the river drake collapses to the ground with a dramatic flop.

"Harr! Way to keep me on the edge of my seat!" Marcos booms from the stands. "That's my test passed. Go ahead and get yourselves cleaned up; I'll gather the Masters."

Everyone may level to Two!

"Well? Feeling well trained?" Despite Marcos's words, it's Drendle Drang's face that greets you, too closely, as you open the door to Master Shaine's study.

Inside, Sorrina is seated at Master Shaine's desk - the elf himself is idly picking through a tome on one of the many shelves. Marcos doesn't sit, but braces himself against a wall near the window.

A tall figure whose face is completely masked by a flowing sheet of water that disappears into mist just past their neck suddenly sharpens into your vision, and they stride out of the office without a word, quickly vanishing down the hallway behind you.

"You have done well at our tests," Sorrina cuts in, and as Master Shaine coughs she adds, "Even perhaps showing a slight excess of zeal. We have our own notes and thoughts of course, but one of the fundamentals of growth is in self-knowledge." She looks to Sajan, expecting agreement from the Iroran.

"Testing is not merely a means of finding success or failure, but of allowing for that self-knowledge.

"What do you know of yourself that you didn't?" asks the Master of Scrolls.
"What have you learned you can trust in from your companions?" asks the Master of Spells.
"What weaknesses must you armor?" asks the Master of Blades.
"And where did they screw up the tests?" asks Drandle with a leer, hooking his thumb at the other three.

Taken aback slightly at Drang's proximity, steps back to respond, "Well trained? Of course we are always learning but tests and training are different activities."

With a wry smile Sajan responds to the first query, "I have learned that my instinct to protect my companions may cost me, even in training exercises. Perhaps my usage of an elixir was unnecessary but surely such expenses are typical for our tests..." Sajan's leaves his statement hanging in hopes of compensation for the spent elixir, and perhaps even the bottled lightning.

Continuing on, "As for trust in my companions, this test only served to reinforce the safety of relying on them in the heat of battle. Kalla's inspiration guides us, Dawn assaults our enemies with magic, Lazlo cares for us, and Nixoret's knowledge is a great strength for us all."

After a moment to reflect on the trials, Sajan responds again, "The arena was not an ideal battlefield for our tactics. Enemies at a distance can freely hamper us while we advance."

Chuckling at the last question, Sajan finishes responding, "Though I understand the nature of many of the creatures in the first trial, I cannot help but feel it is unjust to keep them imprisoned in such a way."

"As for the second trial, I felt our options to address the platform were limited. More options such as rocks and debris, or a small platform that might aid in jumping or attaching the rope may inspire more creativity. Also, why not simply hang the platform? It would remove the solution of trying to destroy the posts, but such a solution would be difficulty and slow anyways."

"And for the last trial, the combatants honor us with their fighting. Yet I imagine the fights would be more interesting on more varied terrain."

I've just been shown, what I should be knowing, I need to work on them. Each and all"

At the question of her companions, she grins even wider "They won't let me fall, even if I end up a dragon chew toy."

"Range." she nods with Sajan's answer of what they could work on "Either learn a bow and learn a spell that hits at least a city block or more."

"A more of a clutter of foes, surrounding, instead of charging, making us pick different ways of hacking?"

"At times, I must rely on my own instincts and training. I cannot rely on the spirits' assistance in all matters."

"I believe all three of these questions are tied together for me. I have learned that my freedom has in ways made me incautious... but I am still blessed to have companions who will sit with me through resolving my mistakes. I have also learned that I allow my cleverness to obscure what is right in front of me, but I can rely on Rising Dawn and Nixoret to see the truth of it, and Kalla to tell me when I've gone too far... at least I think so, I don't always understand all of the idioms how does one barrel? In essence," he pauses and turns to Master Farabellus, "I have learned that my greatest weakness," he turns to Master Shaine "is in the truths of myself that I do not yet fully understand, but my best armor against that ignorance," he turns to Master Westyr, "is the companionship of good allies, those who will shield my weakness and enhance my strength as I do for them."

He pauses in thought briefly, then turns to Drandle. "I would say if you don't want people risking their souls, then don't make it part of the test. The devil is already bound by its summoning, just add an extra clause excluding the option, or create an appropriate simulacrum. Like Master Westyr's lovely sleeping dragon."

This is a crazy bunch, and I wouldn't work with any other kind."

As he finishes the thought, he points at himself "My weakness is that I'm just as insane as the rest them -- when I see an enemy eying somebody else I can't help but put myself in the middle... even if I end up closer to Pharasma's judgement then I'm ready for"

Nixoret makes I contact with Drandle and lets a sly grin play across his face "And for what you did wrong? If you are going to replace me, you're going to need to pick some stronger sewer dragons"

"Harr, I can tell these are yours Dreng. Not a one of 'em's shy to be here - or lecture us right back!" Marcos grins ever more fiercely as you speak, finally breaking out into a pleased guffaw at Nixoret's bravado.

Drandle looks more than a little pleased himself. "Can't all just be book learning, no offense to you and yours Shaine." He cocks his head elaborately to the side. "Actually... That might be a perfect way for you to earn your wayfinders. Training's all well and good, but no one, but no one becomes a Pathfinder without getting into the field, even if they do wind up back at the Grand Lodge."

Shaine somehow radiates irritation, perhaps with his ears, but Sorrina nods. "Rain in Cloudy Day."

Nixoret:
Rain in Cloudy Day has been ruining the curve the whole three years you've been in training. He's an intensely enthusiastic leshy from the forests of Ravounel who has ravenously absorbed knowledge as though born to it. He's as friendly as he is skilled, but he has almost no experience outside of his training here - especially of failure.

Shaine softens at Sorrina's words. "He is late."

Drandle explains, "To catch anyone up, Rain in Cloudy Day is another initiate on his Confirmation - the last part of training and the first field mission every Pathfinder goes on to earn their Wayfinder."

Shaine elaborates, "He and I had designed this mission to one of his particular interests. It was a mission to the nearby nation of Taldor to search for some ruins in the Blackwood Swamp near the city of Cassomir. Standard fare for a Pathfinder mission, but Rain hasn’t reported back, and it’s been a week since his expected check-in."

"Rain in Cloudy Day might still just be an initiate," Marcos cracks his knuckles as he explains, but the Pathfinder Society doesn’t leave its own behind. We'll provide a stipend of gold for you to book your passage to Cassomir, and from there, your own Confirmation will be to find out what happened to Rain."

Drandle chimes in with a dry chuckle. "Exactly what my associates have just said. Find a boat, head to Cassomir, perhaps enjoy a bit of the city’s livelier elements, and then head into the swamps to find our missing initiate. Of course, if you find little Rain alive and well... then you can really prove yourselves by helping him discover those ruins and finish his own Confirmation!"

"Any questions?"

Rising Dawn, Kalla, Sajan:
You know that though Cassomir is the second-largest city in Taldor, its people mostly live in squalor. With widespread poverty, the port city also faces a major crime problem. Con artists or desperate citizens seeking to eke out another few weeks of living often take advantage of foreigners who don’t realize how desperate things are within the city.

Blackwood Swamp is no safer. When straying off the main paths, it's easy to find a patch of flammable gas clouds or quicksand within a misty region of the Blackwood Swamp. Travelers seeking to journey into the swamp should bring a trained wilderness expert, or at least have some plans in place to avoid drowning in mires or quicksand.

The Blackwood Swamp is also home to countless predators, though those within a day’s journey of Cassomir are often fairly docile. Oversized reptiles, strange oozes, wolves, and aberrant castoffs are the worst one can expect to see while travelling in the swamplands close to Cassomir. Creatures beyond a day's journey from the city are wildly unpredictable, and many believe that unnatural creatures such as aberrations and undead arise from some regions of the Blackwood Swamp.

Master Shaine looks a bit chagrined, but Drandle cackles wryly, "You kept Jorsal waiting longer than that while you lot were helping the Farheavens firefight. Might be he's just too caught up in his discoveries to get to Kreighton. Might be he's in some trouble, and if that's the case, he needs the help of his fellow initiates."

Sorrina smiles faintly. "Yes. 'Explore, Report, Cooperate' she recites. All three of the Society's dicta quite neatly presented in a single mission."

Marcos adds, "Harr, could be he just trusted the wrong person to deliver his reports. Do you know where he was going to stay, Kreighton?"

Master Shaine blinks as he retrieves the fact from somewhere in the stores of his memory. "The Three-Legged Frog, in the Imperial Naval Shipyards. Only so long as he remained in Cassomir of course."

We can backfill any further questions if y'all just missed the window, but...

Master Shaine rummages through his cupboards and comes up with a heavy purse. "That has 100 gold pieces in it. More than enough for travel expenses and the like, so just consider the rest a stipend."

Sorrina also adds two minor healing potions and two lesser antidotes to Shaine's offer, while Marcos pulls an everlight crystal from some corner of his weapon rack with a grin. "Stock up and go find a ship."

There are three ships departing soon that can bring you to Cassomir: The Mimosa, a powerful Druman sailing vessel with a polished whitewood hull glinting with golden filigree captained by Javinda, a chatty Kellid who promises that her passengers' every need will be met; The Powerful Hector a large wooden barge with more basic amenities; The Opportune, a somewhat rickety looking vessel whose captain boasts of speed and low costs.

The Mimosa would cost 25gp, the Powerful Hector 12 gold 5 silver, and the Opportune would cost only 6gp.

"We're not flops or fluffs." the bard says with an almost comical effort to force those words out past the desire to be on the golden boat, like heroic champions, sea breezes making their hair and capes flow behind them as they pose their effortless greatness.

She buries image that a sliver of an inch, and sips her ale at the tavern they convened at to discuss their options. "The Hector looks to get us there, good and square, at half the price." laying out her brain's vote.

Laszlo grimaces. "The master went through an unfortunate number of homonculi before we learned not to take sellers at their word. Perhaps we should check with the locals to determine the truth of their promulgations. After all I would not mind the poor accommodations of the Opportune, should it be as fast as claimed, but reliability is obviously a concern."

I would like to either make a Society check to Recall Knowledge about how good or bad the ships actually are, or encourage a more skilled party member to use Diplomacy to Gather Information.

Your gold buys you all a shared cabin aboard the Powerful Hector, as well as three square meals a day, and a pleasant, uneventful journey in Captain Tabrin's charge.

The route from Absalom to Cassomir is well traveled, and it's rare that you're out of sight of another ship's sails. As you draw closer to the bustling port, those fleeting moments vanish.

Aside from the many merchant vessels docking and departing everyday, the faded might of Taldor's military is plain to see. The towering blackwood skeletons of dozens of ships in various phases of construction can be seen in the Imperial Naval Shipyards from miles with tiny antlike woodworkers and shipwrights crawling in and among the unfinished hulls.

The mouth of the great Sellen River is blocked by those unfinished ships sisters-in-arms. Only with the permission of the imperial navy can craft sail deeper upriver into Taldor.

Unusually for so busy a port, beyond the salty smell of the Inner Sea itself, the air isn't particularly foul. It's even sweet with some sort of omnipresent perfume that grows stronger as you dock.

"Best wishes to you fine gentles, and I hope to cross your paths again!" Captain Tabrin offers as his well wishes, along with directions to the Three-Legged Frog "Roland's cooking is fantastic. Good beds, better noodles."

The inn is close to your landing point and is easily spotted by a sign swaying in the wind that depicts a frog standing up on two hind legs while drool from its mouth acts a a third leg to keep the frog's balance. Inside an inkeeper greets you with a generous smile, "Good afternoon, good afternoon. Aganis Downard at your service. How can I help you fine folk? Rooms, refreshments? A pot of tea or a drop of ale?" She pauses briefly as she looks at Laszlo and Nixoret, but her warm expression never fades.

"Both if you don't be minding none, and a meal. We've been on a ship for longer than one needs to be and would love nothing more than something Different. Oh, also we're looking to follow a friend of ours names Rain. Little guy, looks a little... mushroomy?"

Murder in Metal City Map Reach of Corruption Map

Aganis's face wrinkles in distress, "Oh I'm so sorry dearest. I'm just getting back to the inn myself. I was helping my aunt - her hip troubles her so when the weathers been damp, and we'd just had the new barback finally stop breaking quite so many glasses so it seemed the time to take over from my poor brother who's been working himself to the bone for our aunt, who properly isn't exactly his aunt if you're being specifc, but... Oh but your friend? My Roland will have helped him while I was away. I'll get you those drinks - he'll be awake in time to put dinner on, and you can ask him then."

***

You all set in to wait and try the ale; it turns out that the leshy has left a bit of a gossip trail. Roland explains that Rain in Cloudy Day showed up late "due to bad weather as he said," and had to pay increased costs at the inn as a result "It's our policy - we held the room for him, he just didn't sleep in it." Desperate citizens stole his provisions and even his pack mule. "Stabled it at that cheap place down the lane he did, and his mistake. Well, then he went off the next morning. Said he had a guide he'd paid in advance who'd be waiting for him at the Northgate as soon as it opened. Will you be staying then?"

You have a few options for lodgings. You can eat your trail rations and stay at the cheap hostel down the street for a gold each. Staying at the Three-Legged Frog will cost you two gold five silver each for basic rooms with a good lock and your share out of the common room stew. Roland cooking you a special dinner comes along with the best rooms in the Three-Legged Frog. It's expensive (Five gold each), but it's supposed to be a pretty incredible meal.

The noodles are sublime. They're rich, tender with the perfect chew. They're sauced with an eggy mixture with toasted pepper and smoky bacon that slice through through what could otherwise have been a weighty sauce. Atop each bowl is a single small yolk from some game bird and the roe of a Sellen sterlet.

Roland stays long enough to open a bottle of wine, a dry acidic vintage from the shores near Corentyn. He hovers briefly to appreciate your appreciation before bidding you all a good evening, making certain that a bell for any further service is within easy reach.

The brackish swamp is far from a sensory delight after the almost syrupy air of the Cassomir shipyards and the wondrous food and hospitality of Roland and Aganis. Still, boggy terrain and marshy smells don't deter you from your quest. Laszlo quickly picks up a trail of strangely shaped feet that potentially match a fungal leshy's tread, and a handkerchief engraved with a glyph of the Open Road - the sign of the Pathfinder Society.

There are a few patches of burning swamp gas, and Sajan has to steer you around swampy quicksand more than once, but you've so far managed to avoid falling into any danger until you're nearing the end of the day, and beginning to search for a likely place to set up camp. The trail is blocked by a hefty downed tree trunk, and as you start looking around to see how it can best be circumvented or moved, that is when the predators strike!

A trio of hideously malformed, hairless, pustule-covered corpses spring out, moving and hissing more like undead rats than the people they once were.
