About Darius MotalisSocial Identity for The Fiend of Redroof Background:
Darius's parents fled Egorian before Darius's birth due to the immense prejudice that House Thrune harbors for Tieflings. Thrune's strong influence in Egorian made it an inhospitible place to raise a child. Seeking a better life, they fled to the relative acceptance of Kintargo, like many others of their kind. Without much coin to their names, Darius's parents had little choice but to settle in the Devil's Nursery. Pretty early in Darius's childhood, his parents realized that he was not developing prominent Tiefling features. He would be able to pass as human! He would avoid many of the prejudices that they had to endure. In light of this great boon, Darius's parents encouraged him to begin to study, seeing education as the best way for him to integrate into Kintargo's society. With their unceasing encouragement, Darius attended the free schools in the Nursery, and would study at the libraries in much of his free time. He tore through his studies, but felt sitfled by the heavily censored Thrune libraries and meager teachers he had at his disposal. After years of saving up, Darius and his family could finally afford teachers beyond volunteers running classrooms in the Nursery. For a while, the tutors challenged Darius giving him new, more complex topics to grapple with. However, he began to digest the new content and he found himself hitting a wall again within a few short years. With his new tutors falling short, unable to provide new and interesting challenges for him, his success with these teachers attracted the attention of a Victocora patron. Darius was offered a scholarship, the opportunity to recieve a full education. Not just any education, a true broad-studied nobles's education. Darius spent the next few years as the outsider alongside groups of younger nobles who had the opportunity to begin their education at a younger age. But he was learning not just history and art, but also martial arts, weapon use, and even managed to develop some magical aptitude he presented. Once his studies were complete, Darius took on some work of his own, but always assisted the Victocoras. He setup a little shop he managed working as as a scrivener and notary in Redroof Market. Darius had finally achieved the life his parents wanted for him. He was living a life of modest success among the humans, with none suspecting his heritage. However, now that Darius no longer had the goal his parents had impressed on him to give him a narrow focus, he began to think more broadly about his choices and those around him. He realized he succeeded by hiding his true heritage, not in spite of it. By doing so, he left all his fellow Tieflings behind, including his parents and his childhood friends. They did not get to share in his success, as helping them would reveal his nature. While Darius tried to ignore the ideas swirling around in his head, they persisted, returning often to wrack him with ever-growing guilt. One evening, when returning from the Victocora estate to his dwelling, Darius heard someone cry for help. A helpless Tiefling was being held and beaten a group of Tieflings, large and thuggish. Feeling guilt over letting crime like this happen in Redroof, despite all his fancy training, Darius decided he had to intervene. He used some magic to distract and disable some the small group of foes. With the advantage of his magic, he managed to quick incapacitate a few of the gang. When the others realized what had happened, they quickly fled. He was thrilled that he was able to help stop some crime in Redroof. When the beaten man then turned to Darius and thanked him, his fate was sealed. While Darius would try to fight the inevitable, he now felt a calling. Despite trying to avoid going to right back out to fight crime, Darius was unable to resist the urge. Darius realized he couldn't go running around as himself, it would ruin all the work he had put into his life. Thinking of a disguise, Darius realized he could kill two birds with one stone. Using some slight magic, Darius accentuated his Tiefling features. The same features he had spent all his life concealing. He hoped that by acting as Redroof's protector while visibly a Tiefling, perhaps the humans would not immediately dismiss Tieflings as beholden to their fiendish nature. With the disguise in place, he set off to stop crime in Redroof. While his efforts remained pretty contained to petty crime, Darius stopped muggings and some basic protection rackets. Over a month of so, his work began to bear fruit. He began hearing whispers about "The Fiend of Redroof," and they were all positive! He was emboldened and began to go out many nights, slowly taking down some of the more visible crimes in the Nursery. However Darius's was feeling of success was short-lived. The Night of Ashes befell Kintargo, throwing the city into chaos, and completely rattling Darius's world. The Lord-Mayor vanished and numerous iconic buildings were burned to the ground. But worst of all, the Victocora estate, and presumably the whole family were reduced to ash that night. To compound on these disasters, there was news that Barzillai Thrune would become the new Lord-Mayor of Kintargo. Darius's parents often spoke about how terrible House Thrune is to Tieflings and that Egorian was a nightmare. Once Barzillai began to pass his proclimations, Darius began to feel the weight of House Thrune crushing him, and the city. Desperately searching both text and his recollection, Darius managed to recall hearing about a rebel group called the Silver Ravens. He immediately began to scour all his resources for all knoweldge on the Ravens that he could find. There was precious little information to find, but by the end of his search, he had pieced together some of the rebellion's history. The group must have had a major impact on Kintargo to have survived the efforts of the Thrune redactors. Hearing about the upcoming protest during the weekend. Darius plans to attend the rally as a concerned citizen, hoping to find a group of like-minded individuals to resist this new imposition by House Thrune.
