As excited I am about the next wave of product announcements, it's what's coming after these, next summer, that I'm MOST excited about. Boy howdy are people going to go nuts.

Fair enough, but for me, it's what's coming early next Spring.

Well, yes, it makes sense that you'd be excited to REDACTED to REDACTED and REDACTED the REDACTED.

If I'm counting right, it's probably not an AP. You all have already talked about how you're slamming the nostalgia button as hard as you can in the next set of releases, and "slamming the nostalgia button as hard as you can" is pretty much already pretty much peak AP excitement. Maybe some sort of heavy Darklands/Drow thing. The timing would be decent on that, based on what we've heard elsewhere, though it's a little sooner than I might have expected.

Other than that, the biggest things left unclaimed on my radar are Tian Xia, Abberations, Arcadia, Intercessor, Medium, and Shaman. Neutral Champions? None of those feel quite right for this level of hype, though. So... APG2? By my understanding, there are a lot of ancestries out there who could use a second pass and associated bulking out of racial feats, and there are a number of classes that could maybe use a bit of love here or there as well.

So... yeah. If you're going to hype it like that, I'm going to guess one or more of...
- Arcadia
- The Drow thing
- A book that bulks out religious/faith options, including two out of (Intercessor/Medium/Shaman) and neutral Champions.
- APG2

Tian Xia might do it, but I feel like there might actually be a bit of hype fatigue on that one by that point if you didn't have something extra-spicy in there to get us really engaged. Book of Aberrations would certainly get some hype (I'd certainly be inclined to give it some), but it wouldn't be enough by itself to justify the description you're giving here. Might stack nicely with the Drow/Darklands thing, though.

Everything else that I can think of that might get the "boy howdy are people going to go nuts" level of intensity (functional class archetypes, major setting-changing events, etc) is the sort of thing you'd want to wait for somewhat later in PF2's lifecycle.

Mark Moreland wrote:

Okay, I don't actually know much about this, but there's some part of me that's dead certain that that first REDACTED is "return", in a way that I've learned to trust at least a little. I don't know where they're talking about returning to, or what NOUN they're planning to VERB while they're there, but I'm pretty sure it's "return".

Hey what's this?

I thought Paizo staffers were supposed to use their powers for good, and here they are making me vibrate for stuff that's over a year away? I can't vibrate for a whole year; I'll explode!

I think I'm already pretty close to exploding from the excitement at this point, I can't wait to see all these reveals.

Next summer is when D&D 6e comes out. For those who might not know: when 5e came out, we got the Advanced Class Guide. Whatever Paizo gives us is going to be legendary. Possibly, dare I say, maybe even Mythic.

A new New Thassilon adventure for level 1!

Well, there's our answer to the rust hint. I'm really surprised that hint wasn't related to the plane of metal, this does look pretty cool though.

...and If I'm tracking correctly, that leaves Spider still not spoken for? Also, it locks in Rust as the standalone, which means that Spider is confirmed as an AP? Specifically, an AP that is going to have the nostalgia cranked all the way up?

Check me if I'm wrong on all this, please.

Also, we get some runelords stuff, though as a standalone level 1 adventure, it's not going but so far.

Oh, fair point. I don't necessarily expect it, but Mythic would be worth a fair bit of hype in certain circles, yes.

I noticed that the flip-mat for Rusthenge describes it as an introductory adventure, so it's releasing at a good time with all the people switching over from 5e.

My most educated guess now is that the AP will have something to do with Norgorber. At least in my mind spiders + nostalgia = Skinsaw Cult, or something like it, with Norgorber's sacred animal being a spider and the cult showing up in the first ever AP if I'm not mistaken.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, I was right about more New Thassilon content. Wrong about it being an AP...FOR NOW.

Again, if I'm getting my math wrong on this, please someone do correct me. I'm sort of figuring this out on the fly, and I know that I'm using imprecise tools.

Okay, so just digging into the chatter a bit further... James Jacobs is Creative Director of Narrative. The thing that he's super-excited about is almost certain to be AP-related (probably the whole super-nostalgic Spider thing)

Mark Moreland, as Brand Strategy... I admit, I'm not entirely clear on what Brand Strategy covers and doesn't cover. Regardless, in context, whatever he's talking about probably isn't an AP. (If he was being excited about an AP, they'd probably be getting excited about the same thing.)

Back in November, Luis Loza had an AMA, where he said (in Neutral Champions) "I think there's a good possibility for that, but finding the right book for it is key!" It's only been three months. If they were close enough on a general faiths-and-religions book to announce any time soon, then he wouldn't have said that then. So the hype isn't "Neutral Champs and Intercessors".

So, for the stuff on the table...
- Arcadia
- Tian Xia
- Aberrations
- Mythic
- APG2
- Vudra

Of those, Vudra and Aberrations... don't have enough throw weight individually. They might be enough in combination. Mythic, from what I can see, gets a lot of attention from a relatively small number of people. I expect and hope that they're going to come out with it eventually, but I don't really see a director of Brand Strategy getting super pumped about it by itself. As earlier noted, though, it *does* fit with Vudra, and so might be coming out as the same sort of one-two punch as Vudra/Aberrations.

So for the moment I'm guessing Arcadia, Tian Xia, or APG2. For now.

Interesting that the AP page didn't go up? Maybe later tonight or tomorrow perhaps

Might be waiting for a Wargamer article to go live, so as to not rob them of clicks.

I was looking into some stuff with Rovagug earlier because of their connections with spiders, and one of their more spider-like spawn, Kothogaz, has pieces of their body across Vudra so there could be a connection there. The largest one's even in Jalmeray, and I'm sure there's ways they could work nostalgia into this.

The nostalgia thing I'm excited for is not going to be announced this month...it'll be a few months down the road I expect.

The non-nostalgia Adventure Path thing I mentioned upthread is a different thing than that, and is ALSO something I am excited for, and should be public much sooner than the nostalgia thing.

Somehow I can't stop reading "Rusthenge" as "Russ-thenj."

im stil banking on a darklands book, there are like a dozen viable ancestories and heratages in the darklands and none of them have been touched so far, we know there is a demand for drow, and I feel like other species down there like xugalith, caligni or Munavri that could become something really special with a 2e coat of paint. not to mention that there are so many areas down there that could probably only ever be covered in a dedicated dark lands book

3 people marked this as a favorite.

With Rusthenge being keyed to level 1 and coming with its own bespoke Backgrounds, it's clearly something they want people to be able to build off of... I have to wonder if it's only one of several entry vectors to the Saga Lands coming up, perhaps.

Today's blog is titled "Architects of the Vault" but my brain read the title as "Architect of the Vault Builders". So I guess my brain is predicting Darklands.

Based on this, I'm assuming my 6-part Tian Xia AP starting in October and bringing back Ameiko in book 5 is off the table.

...which suggests (if I'm understanding the implications right) that the next AP (Spider) is probably going to be a three-parter, with the nostalgia one being the AP after it.

Yeah. Though Starfinder Enhanced was just announced for October, which is like the Unchained of Starfinder, it sounds like.

Yeah, never mind - I thought Pathfinder 2e came out a year or so after Unchained, but I realized it was four years. Back to the drawing board!

As a person in the southern hemisphere (where Summer ended yesterday) can someone illuminate me as to what this means in terms of months and year. This year? Next year?

Spring is late March to late June, Summer late June to late September.

...and by reading around the edges it's pretty clear that they're both talking about things that will be announced this year.

please let once of those developers excitement announcements be mythic please !

I just hope that if they do announce Mythic, that they manage to do it well. It is so easy to do Mythic poorly.

I guess I also get confused by “next Summer” which means to me “not this coming Summer but next Summer” which is more than a year away for an announcement for something that is likely 6 or months out from the announcement… I basically zone out of hype because I never really understand the timing.

This is still like ways away. But with Starfinder enhanced being released 6 years after its release, same with 1e's Unleashed. We can probably expect some form of Core update in 2025

I certainly hope not, the game is fine without mythic. We tried mythic for PF1e and it absolutely did not work well. If they do it for 2e, it needs a major rework and even then I'd be unlikely to get any playtime in it.

That said, my sample size is pretty small overall in my area. I'm not sure how well it was received globally.

Since there is Tech trait and Treasure Vault did't have it, book dedicated for Numerian tech should come later.

But at staff's wording, much later.

As did Paizos facebook page. I am quite curious.

They said it was for no reason, though, so everybody remember to act surprised.

I'm excited to see whatever this is, I don't think it'll be easy for me to wait for their announcement.

Hengegate might be teeing up some further Saga Lands fun, which would be nice for the nostalgia contingent, but might not warrant this level of hype. I'm holding firm on my Tian Xia bet, but I'm fully prepared to be wrong.

Well, since the announcement is gonna be later today does anybody have some last minute predictions?

Part of me wonders if they could be starting an event similar to Starfinder's Drift Crisis since I can't think of much else that would be fitting with how the Paizo staff have been talking about this. Tian Xia's also starting to feel more likely to me, although I'm not convinced that there's been enough buildup to make it work, I'd expect to see a shaman option and new fighting style archetypes first. I would really like it though, as a big Japanese history fan I'd particularly love to have a take on fantasy Japan that avoids all the orientalism/propaganda you usually see with it in fantasy, and some good Ainu/Ryukyuan rep would be fun too.

The stuff for next summer is usually announced at Gencon.

Based on the timing of previous announcements, I can't imagine there being enough runway left this year for even a Novemeber/December rulebook, unless that rulebook has no playtest (general timing is book release 10~11 months after a playtest). So the earliest I can imagine would be January of next year, more likely February/March. A no playtest rulebook like treasure vault could be announced, like my previous guess of Book of Abominations, or a Lost Omens book.

Or both! I'd like both. Heck, I'd enjoy all three. A late year monster focused book, the 3rd lost omens book this year (which I think will be the last and they'll skip the normal 4th), and a playtest starting next month for a book releasing next February. Not that I think that big of a drop is likely (they'd stagger announcements more), just saying what would please me.

If we do get a book of Aberrations, I wouldn't want it to be playtest-free. Dammit, there are some really tasty class possibilities in that space. That's the stuff I'd want out of that kind of book most of all.

I considered a Drift Crisis, but I feel like it's way too soon in the product lifecycle. You want to have all the pieces on the board before you start seriously messing with them like that. Once we see Arcadia, Vudra, Tian Xia, and Golden Road books, then it might be time to be thinking about a Drift Crisis equivalent. (...and heck - I'm almost certainly missing a few as well.)
