Dot of the Watching Eye

Dotted. GM Watcher, just for the sake of information, and if we plan on starting some RP - we are starting in Zelkor's Ferry, at an inn, right? Newly arrived?

Dotting. As I understand it, we are already a group, so we can RP a little bit of backstory together, perhaps dicussing the encounters on the journey here

Paint peels from the wall as you awake, golden light peeking in from the windows. The cries of already drunken men come from below, four other visitors already having awoken and obtained drink.

A single man also sits in the common room, staring at the chaos unfolding within the inn with disdain.

Soon, events will be set in motion.
Soon.

You are all within the upstairs portion of Bristleback's Inn, the centre of this small town. Run by Odo Bristleback and his family, they are the leaders within the town.

Zelkor's Ferry information will be posted in the Campaign Info tab.

Ran groans as he wakes and levers himself up off the bed. He'd slept in worse places, but this place was definitely in the bottom half. It takes him a moment to register the noise downstairs. "Gods, it's too early for that." He stands and stretches, going over to the washbasin to wash the sleep out of his eyes.

Silver Crusade

Theragul sits at a corner table, calmly breaking his fast as he casually watches and listens to the common room.

Not long ago, I would be wearing a cloak to hide my fell features in a place like this . He idly touches his bastard sword emblazoned with the wing and blade. Let them judge shallowly if they will. My blade stands ready to bring the Light should the ignorant allow the Darkness to lead their actions towards hatred.

Tark lumbered downstairs spitting curses left and right - "What in Torag's name is happening down there?!" - he grumbles wading into the common room.

"Best get me something to drink before my mood turns sour" - he ponders. Looking around, he spots Theragul sitting all by himself in a corner and moves on over - "Guess you couldn't sleep either Halfblood? I swear it felt like a freakin' dwarven forge when I first heard it - I'm guessin' nothin's better than a loud noise to wipe the sleep off yer face though, right?!" - he strikes up a conversation, sitting heavily next to his recent travelling companion - "You ate yet? I'm about to order me somethin' - you wantin'?"

The dwarf seems like a veritable implement of warfare - multiple and different types of weapons stand out from his shape, pointing here and there - in spite of the armour worn, he doesn't seem hindered by it - all of the apparel seems to have seen good use, and if anything is in fact very well kept, would be his fiery beard and moustache - "Girl!" - he shouts - "Mind I bother ye for some food and drink this fine morning?"

Silver Crusade

Qlippoth-Spawn Tiefling Cleric of Ragatheil 1 HP: 9/9 | AC: 16 | F=3; R=1; W=6 | Perc. = +8 | Init = +1

"I have just finished eating, thank you Trask. I rose with the dawn to commune with my Empyreal Lord, but left you to sleep as the ale had you snoring again... as it does when you may have had an abundance."

"It's Tark me brother" - the dwarf nudges the tiefling's ribs hard, all in good nature - "And is there any other way to consume ale if not in abundance?" - he questions, with a dire look in his face - "I don't think so my friend" - he roars in laughter.

"Anyways, it is food for me only then" - he ponders for a few moments - "Commune you say..? I remember the dwarves o'me clan doin' somethin' like that - is it due every mornin', or your Empyreal Lord lets ya do it when you have the time?" - he questions with the usual bluntness.

"Dawn is when the night is slain by the sun, and so Ragatheil lends me a sliver of His blazing wrath at sunrise to bring to find and destroy the Darkness for another day. Let us hope today provides us with such opportunity, resting in inns such as this for to long leaves me... anxious for action." Not thirsty for blood... not lusting for slaughter... Wrathful vengeance upon the fell brood that tainted me since birth, that is what my Lord seeks and so that is what I seek in His name.

"Got it" - Tark nods, closing his mouth that stood agape for just a tad.

"Don't worry lad - we should be bailin' out of this place soon enough - I didn't travel from miles away to be sittin' my arse on some far remote tavern or halfway house, though you already be knowin' that. Even so, I've gotta say this one ain't half bad" - he takes a look around.

"Have you seen the others by the way?"

Male Suli Paladin 1

Jean takes his time after waking to groom. Not a hair out of place, not a scuff to sully his armor. Once satisfied, he descends to the common room.

"A good morning to everyone." He nods in the direction of the serving girl. "Miss, if you would be so kind, I will take my breakfast."

He sits a table over from the Dwarf and Demon Blood and gives a tentative smile in their direction while he waits for his food.

I thought we already knew each other? If Jean is sitting a table away nonetheless, Tark is gonna get loud :D

"If the tables can be pushed together for drinking and gambling, they can sure be pushed together for breakfast." With that he reaches a long arm and drags Jean's table together with Tarks and his own. He then mutters quiently, "Observing proprieties too well in a place like this is as bad as flashing too much cash, paladin. Best not to let the dark see what they might perceive as weakness..."

Male Suli Paladin 1

Sorry, I missed that bit.

"Ah, there you two are. Must have had something in my eye. People are better than you think Theragul. And trust is a strength. Besides, there are easier targets for thievery than us I'm sure."

"That is for sure Fleur, though I'm thinkin' there will always be some poor sod really down on his luck, or desperate enough to risk takin' a shot even at a strappy fella like Theragul here" - the dwarf pipes in - "There's a lot'o'crap on the big wide world that be for sure, but ya can't just see darkness around every corner lad" - he adds at the tiefling - "It'll make ya go nuts!"

Turning to the paladin he follows up - "Say, have you eaten already? I'm about to order me some hearty breakfast - you in?" - he keeps looking about for a serving person.

"By the way... Any idea on how we startin' on what we came here to do?"

Male Suli Paladin 1

"He's right you know. Don't mire yourself in darkness when there are so many fair things to look upon." Jean smirks. "If there is someone that desperate about, then they clearly need whatever they can manage to pick from my pocket more than I do and are welcome to it."

He responds to Tark's question "I haven't, but there are still a couple of sleepy heads upstairs, so no hurry."

Ran came down looking fresh and crisp in spite of his having stayed up late with Tark. While the man couldn't hope to match the dwarf's tolerance, that didn't stop him from trying. "Order me something greasy. I need to soak up all this ale floating around in my blood." He sits in between Tark and Theragul, across from Jean.

He looks over at the loud drunks. "Some people don't know when to stop." Ran looks back at the rest of his team with a smile. "We wouldn't know anything about that, would we?"

Magnus comes down right behind him, looking as dapper as ever.
"The facilities in this establishment leave something to be desired. It's a good thing we Tates are prepared. I hope no-one has too bad a head from last night's ale? good. Now what are we doing today? Ah, yes we have a commission from Lord Venthraine. To Jean, the tiefling says quietly, "I do not mire myself in darkness, my friend. I seek it, so that by destroying it I make the world brighter. I worry that your pure heart looks only for the good in things, and sees not the darkness that must be cut out like a cancer."

To Magnus he says with a fanged grin, "Good! A commission will be a welcome distraction from days in an inn. I know not of Rappan Athuck, but surely there is more to do than wait there." Around companions that know him, the tiefling seems freer than he did alone in an inn, worried about conflict with those blind to the dark.

Gabr joins the others in the common area of the inn. He is a small, non-descript man who might have occupied a place at the table for some time before anyone took note of his presence.

As the party continues to speak to each other, Tallie (one of the serving women) comes up to them with a forced smile. "Sorry for your wait. What would you like today?"

The other men are continuing to be rowdy, and one of them comes over to the table. "What... are you doing here?" The man is obviously drunk, his words slurring widely as he leans on the table. "You all look interesting..."

"No problem lass" - Tark retorts - "We're in need of a stout breakfast so... I'm sayin' some portions o' meat should be involved, as well as some fresh ale, if ye've got some - as for the rest I'll trust yer suggestions on the house specialties..." - he nods, and was about to sketch a smile, when he notices the drunken man approaching - "Without a side of drunkard, if it can be helped" - he adds, ignoring the man, since his travelling companions would probably accuse him of not trying to make friends at every corner, or something like that.

There's diplomatic and there's shooing off an intruding drunk. I think Ran and Theragul were being relatively nice, given the circumstances. Come on, if you can't make fun of a drunk NPC who can you make fun of? ;)

Gabr submits to Tark's elbow in his side but seems reluctant to join in the raucous banter going on around the table. He is a man of few words, preferring to watch and listen most of the time. His father lives life believing that it is better to keep his mouth shut and appear stupid than it is to open it and remove all doubt, a belief that was diligently passed onto his sons. The Mos'ata estate has always been a place of solemnity and measured conversation as far as Gabr can recall so he has grown to be generally quiet man.

"Taxes are never a matter for jest and one of us is a tax collector." he admonishes Jean, fixing the paladin with a stern gaze...but only for a few seconds before he winks and flashes a good natured smile. He is generally quiet man, not a humourless wretch.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Sorcerer 1 HP 21/27 AC17 (T15 F13) Init+7 Per+5

Lol, just remember that Magnus believes himself to be superior to someone who (in his eyes) is clearly riffraff, add in the fact that he could probably incinerate him on the spot and you can see why he doesn't have the patience to be diplomatic. If the man cannot see that he is dealing with his superiors, he should be forcibly reminded.

Exactly Magnus - 'un' diplomatic :D

Tark taps his fingers on the table, waiting for both the girls' reply, and for the drunken sod to move away.

Seeing the drunk confused, Theragul adds, "If you must know, we prepare to journey to Rappan Athuk to learn the fate of a group known as the Fire Hawks. Do you know anything of the place?" This one give the gifts he was given to the drink... shameful. Pitiful.

Thallia, ignoring the drunk man, continues speaking. "Of course. I'll get it right to you." Meanwhile, the drunken man seems to ignore the comment about tax collectors. "Rappa Thuk is... blur..." The man falls over, the drink already gone to his head.

The innkeeper, Odo, steps out from behind the counter, his arms crossed. "Sorry about that gentlemen. The rabble'll be gone shortly" He speaks with an odd accent, his voice growling to match his muscled figure. As the drunks spot him moving, they dump some money on the table and begin to leave, uneasily staring at Odo.

Tark nods in appreciation of both Thallia's response, and Odo's 'cleaning up' - "Ye seem to have 'a way' with them drunkards, heh?" - he quips at the man - "Guess that's handy when runnin' a business... No gentleman here by the way, but thanks anyways - wouldn't wanna stir no ruckus in your establishment. Tark's the name" - he introduces himself.

So....

Sorry for the delay.

"It is a sort of talent, you could say..." Odo glances at the last drunkard, who stumbles away after being helped up. "Tanks for..." The man's words lisp off into some drunken nonsense as he almost falls out the door.

"No matter of mine as innkeeper what they celebrate Master Ranald." Odo says calmly in response to Ranald. "So long as they cause no real damage on their way out, it is no business of mine."

Thallia returns, an apologetic smile on her face as she walks up to Jean. "I'm sorry, but the inn has a policy of never serving pig." Odo nods as she speaks. "Slipped your mind Thallia?" She nods, embarrassedly looking at the ground.

"But what of you Master Magnus? Still with the silver tongue of yours? You could talk the ear off a troll with that!" The innkeeper smiles in jest, staring at the dapper sorcerer. "But I heard the black-blooded one speaking of Rappan Athuk? What kind of work brings you to that accursed place?"

OK, we have Theragul A Tiefling Cleric. Given his background, I assume he is some kind of Battle Cleric, which is all good.

Then there is Ran Voker, Human Bard (Archaelogist) (I like Archaeologists), who is going to be our skill monkey.

Jean D'Fleur, Suli Paladin searching for a lost artifact. Uses a Glaive.

Tark Boulderbreaker Dwarf Fighter, uses a Bardiche and then presumably switches to Greatsword for up close work.

Gabr Mos'ata Inquisitor of Abadar, (another favourite class of mine) with a mission to repatriate the hidden wealth of the world.. Uses a Longbow by preference.

abd then there's me. Magnus Tate.

Now from my point of view; I am not a front-liner, but I do need to be close enough to use my spell effectively. looking at the area of effect, the squares diagonally forward would be safe, so it makes sense for me to have a frontliner in each position (assuming we have the space); since our front liners all use reach weapons (as do I ) we then have multiple overlapping 'fields of fire', and once a large number of opponents have been funnelled into range, I can let loose with my burning hands, leaving the frontliners to mop up.

Gabr presumably would seek to be a second ranker to use his bow effectively while still being covered, Theragul will want cover while laying down Buffs and be near enough to the front to step in after.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Posting from my phone, so the formatting may not be the best ;)

I am really wanting to play the proverbial dwarf, since I miss that from the 'old days' - that being said it is more a matter of character attitude than exact build. I am assuming that GM Watcher is ok with some tweaking (maybe I shouldn't? :D), so apart from his gruff demeanor, and being as tough as can be, Tark is not really 'set in stone' and I have not yet fully decided if I just want to make him a tough pebble to chew on (with a big armour and shield, dealing less damage, thus presenting less of a menace to bad guys who may simply try to ignore him - I might consider going 2w fighting for one/two - weapon/shield hit combo), or a hard-hitting up in your face kind of guy that simply cannot be ignored because it just hurts too much to do so :D

Since we have multiple 'reach' characters, playing Tark also as one might be beneficial to us - a frontline with two or three reach combatants can really dish out some pain before they close in, mainly if we can hit them hard enough from afar that they simply cannot help but closing in.

I could make some improvements on Tark by making him an Invulnerable Rager instead - Superstition would REALLY make him a nut magically hard to crack (as a 'fighter type' I am aiming at making him as resistant to magic as possible), without it meaning any change in character attitude or feel, while shoring up some additional skills (I really have a hard time playing unskilled characters :/) I would probably make him an Urban Barbarian also, whose rage would be more akin to that 'in the zone' dwarves fighting stance. So, I guess that depending on GM Watcher allowing some last minute changes, Tark can really be customized, while retaining all the dwarven charm :D

Excited to be along. Theragul is set to be a battle cleric, eventually armoring up with a big weapon and swinging away after a couple of buffs. Longspear for reach situations but the Bastard Sword is his favorite. Carries a shield for when he needs to turtle up a bit, but prefers to swing away.

As a general rule I'm more of a "what feels right for the character" rather than a min/maxer but am open to suggestions as things move along to make sure he fulfills his roll in the party.

Tark, whatever you choose, so long as it is finalized by the 25th, can be done.

M Human Bard (Archaeologist) 1 (HP 9/9 | AC:17 | T:13 | FF:14 | CMB: -0 | CMD:13 | Fort:+2 | Ref:+5 | Will:+2 | Init:+3 | Perc: +4 | Speed 30)

Ran's primary attack is going to be his shortbow, but with his shield in one hand and whip in the other he has a decent AC (17).

I could change some spells in his load-out. Maybe sub in Dancing Lights for Prestidigitation? For spellcasting he's mostly going to try to be clever with his illusions; an archaeologist's buffing ability is mainly limited to himself.

He could also swap out Know:Arcana for Local, Religion, or Planes, since Magnus has Arcana covered right now.

Input is appreciated. I'll have his gear finished up soon.

I'm also finishing up on Tark's gear. Thanks for the freedom of choice GM Watcher, but I guess I will stick to my guns as is, and play him in the original version - a straight up fighter. After all, if I feel like dipping barbarian or some such, it isn't a dramatic stretch for a fighter ;)

As far as knowledges go, I am all for trying to get some balance in the group. I just gave him Dungeoneering and Engineering - it seemed it would fit in with his dwarven ancestry more seamlessly. Also I really could not help myself and gave him Craft Armor - not sure how many times we will be able to use it but hey! I'm a dwarf! :D

I may tweak Theragul a bit before the 25th... no major changes though. Was looking at the Crusader archetype but it just seems like a rather bad deal. Except for evangelist clerics seem to lake good archetypes.

Awesome. I agree that three pole-arms users ought to dominate melee for the early levels. Jean also can serve as a party face, but is skill-less in all other areas. If we survive to second level, he will start gaining not insignificant healing capability. (Going to pick up Greater Mercy at third)

"May the power of love protect us on our quest!"

GM Watcher, have you decided what the nature of Jean's artifact is? Anything that might have been kept in a Shelyn temple will work.

Preferably something inner planes related.

M Human Bard (Archaeologist) 1 (HP 9/9 | AC:17 | T:13 | FF:14 | CMB: -0 | CMD:13 | Fort:+2 | Ref:+5 | Will:+2 | Init:+3 | Perc: +4 | Speed 30)

Ran's also looking for a bezoar or something else to cure a poison resistant to clerical healing. May overlap with Jean's quest item, may not.

There may be some overlap. I'm currently reading through the book and seeing where I could place it, or where it would be.

I like how you guys have set some of your own goals, because it makes it less difficult for me :)

However, I will ensure that you know what your employer has given you as your task, and I'll post it here since you would already know.

Your task is to find where a team of adventurers known as the Fire Hawks has disappeared to. They were last adventuring within Rappan Athuk, and it includes some high-profile individuals including Venthraine's own son. However, due to the aforementioned tension between Hallowfell and the other countries, he cannot directly act to investigate.

The delay was because I didn't have access to my laptop for an extended time. My girlfriend dropped in for the day, and priorities had shifted accordingly.

There shouldn't be anymore significant delays, though my next post will certainly be delayed until 5(ish) pm MST due to aforementioned priority shift.

Do we have an established order, or any scouts out?

Tark doesn't mind taking the lead :D

As for scouting... Well... It is not his forte

M Human Bard (Archaeologist) 1 (HP 9/9 | AC:17 | T:13 | FF:14 | CMB: -0 | CMD:13 | Fort:+2 | Ref:+5 | Will:+2 | Init:+3 | Perc: +4 | Speed 30)

Ran will take the lead indoors but outdoor scouting's not really his thing. I'd say put him near the front but not in front for overland travel like this.

Sorry guys, haven't been able to log onto the site all weekend. Will get something up after work tonight

I am going on holiday on 19th July to 29th July. If necessary, feel free to DMPC Magnus (try not to get him killed, I rather like him, lol). It's unlikely that I will be able to get online while I away.

Do we need to arrange watches? As a human I would be best on the first or last watch, and it will also help me get the requisite sleep to recharge my spells (not that that is a problem this time round).

M Human Bard (Archaeologist) 1 (HP 9/9 | AC:17 | T:13 | FF:14 | CMB: -0 | CMD:13 | Fort:+2 | Ref:+5 | Will:+2 | Init:+3 | Perc: +4 | Speed 30)

Ran needs to recharge his spells, too, so he'll need to either be first or last watch. I can't hit the Roll20 site right now so put his bedroll wherever, near the other PCs.

Male Aasimar (Garuda-blooded) Inquisitor 1 HP 9/9 | AC 15 T 13 FF 12 | Fort +3 Ref +3 Will +5 | Perc +7 | Init +3

Bah, I apologize guys but I either didn't realize or missed that some of this game would be on Roll20. It looks like a fantastic program and not all that difficult to learn but I'm just not up to doing it right now as a flooded appliance problem has husband and I starting a massive reno due to the water damage.

Thanks for selecting my character and best of luck on your adventure. I'm sorry I can't stick around for more.

The Roll20 is only being used to track movement, not for actual live combat...

But if you feel you can no longer participate, best of luck to you in your adventures.

GM Watcher, we are supposed to send you our e-mail address to be invited to join on the Roll20, correct?

Just follow this link:

https://app.roll20.net/join/438096/uplYTw

It should work assuming you have an account there already.

I already have an account, so I followed the link, but after joining the game all I see is a blank map, with no features, images or tokens.

Silver Crusade

Qlippoth-Spawn Tiefling Cleric of Ragatheil 1 HP: 9/9 | AC: 16 | F=3; R=1; W=6 | Perc. = +8 | Init = +1

I also see a blank map with blank counters.

Hurm...

I've got five circles labeled with names in the centre of the map. Not sure why they're not showing up for you...

Male Suli Paladin 1

It looks fine to me.

Who wants to take what watch? I'm thinking: Ran and Tark, then Jean and Gabr, and Theragul by himself to best spread out our perception bonus people.

Agreed. Go!

Works for me.

when I press it, it doesn't even send me to Roll20!

Male Suli Paladin 1

You around GM?

Our GM seems to be posting in other games - I am not sure what is happening.

Male Professional Dosser 14/Rules Lawyer6

OK, I've got it. Had to use Firefox to access it, but I'm in.

Ok, I'll give it a try with Firefox.

But where is GM Watcher?

Archaeology bump!

PM sent to GM Watcher.

Sorry guys.

To tell you the truth, I abandoned this thread for the last while because I didn't know exactly to continue it, and I didn't want to deal with all the technical issues.

Sorry for that.

If you guys are still willing, I can continue the campaign.

I'm not exactly sure I understood GM Watcher - when you say you didn't know exactly how to continue it, what do you mean? Story wise, or..?

May I ask also what technical issues? With Roll20 you mean?

That being said, if you still feel motivated as a GM after this long hiatus (a motivated GM is essential in any game, and you are supposed to also have fun with this), Tark is still game.

M Human Bard (Archaeologist) 1 (HP 9/9 | AC:17 | T:13 | FF:14 | CMB: -0 | CMD:13 | Fort:+2 | Ref:+5 | Will:+2 | Init:+3 | Perc: +4 | Speed 30)

I'm not going anywhere, so if you still want to play I'll play.
