![]() First of all, let me preface this by saying I'm sorry. Second, a little background. This is actually the third campaign of Rappan Athuk I am simultaneously running. One with my RL life group, another with another online group, and this one. Unfortunately I was not prepared for taking on a third campaign, even if it is a Post-by-play. Overall, all of my campaigns have started to pile up, and I simply don't have the dedication to run this one anymore. Sorry for starting this up again, but this campaign will not be continuing under me. Hopefully all of your other campaigns lead you to wonderful adventures! ![]()
![]() Initiative(Wolves):: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 Three wolves, mouths dripping in anticipation of meat, charge in towards the dwarf. Quick enough to beat the dwarf's preparation, the three try to bite and claw their prey apart. Attack Roll(Charge): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
One set of claws and teeth slips through the dwarven mail, tearing at flesh and trying to bleed you, wrench you from your feet! One hit Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
However, though the bite wraps around your leg, your axe blow shoves the creature back, its head split open by your mighty blow. --- The other wolves charge in, eyes aflame as they split their pack among the prey. Three approach the mage, flanking to the left to avoid the armored one, while another three run down upon the Qlippoth-spawn. The two greater beasts move to the sides, looking for an opening to tear a bloody throat apart. Attacks on Magnus
Attacks on Jean
Attacks on Theragul
![]()
![]() Tark and Magnus: You manage to hear the crunching of grass, and with a quick glance are able to spot 11 more wolves, two of them significantly larger than the others. They are not a size category larger. They seem to be trying to ambush you. Jean and Theragul: You manage to notice the wolves, though somehow the larger two escape your gaze. Please roll initiative. All save Ran, and perhaps Gabr, are able to act in the surprise round. ![]()
![]() This is my first play by post that I've GMed, though I have ran live sessions. I'm used to a faster GM style, which lets me adjust a lot better to technical problems like in Roll20 (the token visibility and such). So I felt a lot more stress dealing with that, and I'm sorry for letting that get to me. But yes, I'm willing to give it another shot and get this going. I'm going to try adding in a more active plot, which may make some differences. In either case, I will be ready to start this. So who's ready to kill some wolves? ![]()
![]() Just follow this link: https://app.roll20.net/join/438096/uplYTw It should work assuming you have an account there already. ![]()
![]() The next few days go without incident, the wolf tracks fading from view on the first day. Game is plentiful for the next two days, a pleasant turn of events from the previous days. With night quickly arriving on the fifth day of travel, the darkened landscape may force you to pitch tents earlier than you would like, though your estimations show that you will not be delayed on your journey. Please use the new map on Roll20 to set up your campsite ![]()
![]() That would be a fun archetype, though I don't know of anything that emulates it. I think a custom-built archetype may be interesting, and may be worry looking into. Look into Dreamscarred Press' Soulknife and Aegis if you're wanting that kind of "forge your own weapon/armour" flavour. Flavour-wise, Summoners are one of the most flexible things from the ground-up. A ghost friend, a force that you've managed to harness, all kinds of fun things ![]()
![]() Added a marker for your location on the Roll20 map. We're also cutting to this first encounter, though I hadn't really made it that clear. Sorry for that. You're also traveling east now, because I'm making mistakes in my description. The sun should be behind you. As the end of the day comes upon you, Gabr manages to find suspicious tracks ahead. They appear similar to wolf tracks, which may explain why you haven't found any game today. ![]()
![]() The sun rests just above the horizon, and the shadows begin to crawl across the world. Somehow, it seems darker than most sunsets, though that doesn't stop you from seeing decently without the aid of your own lights. No game was found the last day, and you'll be stuck with your normal rations tonight. ![]()
![]() So, as your speed is 24 miles/day, I'll calaculate the approximate # of days for your travels, and also random encounters. It will take you 8 days to travel to the main entrance; do you want to RP out that travel time, or just the actual encounters? Random encounter rolls: Check: 1d10 ⇒ 9

![]() Odo nods at Theragul and Tark. "I hope you all return safely." At Tark's comment, Odo laughs boisterously, the smile spreading across his face. "Two clever tongues in the same group may be too many! But stay safe Master Tark." The man takes the payment quietly, glancing down to count it before nodding at the Aasimar. "It's doubtful you could really find a guide here. The business is too risky for most of those who live here, and most who have tried that profession end up dead by bandits or worse." ![]()
![]() Odo leans back, eyes rolling upwards to think. "I believe they started with the main entrance. But I'm not sure what kind of things they encountered there. Also, keep an eye out for bandits and the like when you're travelling. They're pretty dangerous for most normal folk." The innkeeper stands, smiling. "But I think you're not normal folk by a long shot." ![]()
![]() Odo nods, though he passes by most of the other questions. "I last saw them a few months ago. But, they still haven't been seen since then." The innkeeper's face twisted as he tries to remember something. "They left for the main entrance of Rappan Athuk, though they have visited many other areas before then." Glancing towards Jean, Odo shrugged. "As I said, I don't really know what they worship. I haven't had the time to really investigate them." ![]()
![]() "Gumbel is an excellent cook." Odo says, smiling as you compliment the cooking. "Haven't had a bad day for her for who knows how long." "But on with the tale... According to the legend, and corrorborated by the findings of some adventuring parties, some members of the priesthood escaped here. Here they built a great underground mausoleum fathoms deep, and filled to the brim with strange magic and countless secrets. Built under the watchful eye of their lord, Rappan Athuk still yet taints the world around us. Feral animals are more common, strange creatures appearing around... it'd be hard to say that the curse of that place is any weaker than its inception. But such darkness wouldn't go unnoticed by Zelkor, who by that point had taken a vested interest in ensuring that the Demon Prince never made another foothold on this world. When he found the place... Odo shakes his head. "He was frightfully enraged. He brought as many members of the Army as he could, and descended into the crypts below. No one knows what's become of him and his army since then. Some say that he slew the cult, and died along with them in that place in a heroic sacrifice. Others say that he was turned to the path of evil. Others say that even this very tale is a lie to keep people from investigating the dungeon, but one thing still rings true. The saying of 'Don't go down the Well'." Leaving a single long pause, Odo leans back with a wide smile. "But enough talk of such heavy things." ![]()
![]() Odo smiles, leaning forward in his chair. As he speaks, breakfast is brought to the table, all cooked expertly. Thallia is quiet as she distributes the plates. "The legend begins with the Army of Light, a great force of good among the planes, turning their focus here. A cult of Orcus had taken root in the old civilization, and had grown strong under the care of their dark patron, the Prince of Undead. They were capable of glorious magic, far beyond the capability of even the most powerful mages of this age, though they never were able to demonstrate it in full. For the Army of Light too was mighty, and they brought their hammer down upon Tsar. Lead by the archmage Zelkor, the Army broke the city of Tsar, slaying the priests of Orcus and driving the cult out. However, they did not succeed in culling all their members..." A grim pause came, and Odo glanced around the table. It seemed as if the daylight had almost dimmed such, or perhaps it was merely a trick of the light. ![]()
![]() Odo smiles at all the brave words, but with a wistful look on his face. "Many have started as you did. But none have had the willpower to brave Rappan Athuk for long. Your Fire Hawks were one of those who managed to stay longer than the rest, though... it has been a fair few months since they last arrived here." Thallia nods at Jean, hastily dashing back to the kitchen, while Odo continues. Tales: 1d100 ⇒ 62
"Some say that pirates have taken over the eastern shoreline, near Rappan Athuk's main entrance. Perhaps they enjoy preying on parties returning from the depths and stealing from their weak fingers..." However, not all who live beyond these walls are unfriendly. There's supposed to be some cloister of monks who live up the river who seem to have helped some who have traveled through here. I'm not sure of them, I haven't had the chance to investigate them myself. But the last tale, well... it's longer than the rest. Deals with the origins of Rappan Athuk." The man takes a chair from another table, sitting down beside you. "Care to hear it?" ![]()
![]() The delay was because I didn't have access to my laptop for an extended time. My girlfriend dropped in for the day, and priorities had shifted accordingly. There shouldn't be anymore significant delays, though my next post will certainly be delayed until 5(ish) pm MST due to aforementioned priority shift. ![]()
![]() Sorry for the delay. "It is a sort of talent, you could say..." Odo glances at the last drunkard, who stumbles away after being helped up. "Tanks for..." The man's words lisp off into some drunken nonsense as he almost falls out the door. "No matter of mine as innkeeper what they celebrate Master Ranald." Odo says calmly in response to Ranald. "So long as they cause no real damage on their way out, it is no business of mine." Thallia returns, an apologetic smile on her face as she walks up to Jean. "I'm sorry, but the inn has a policy of never serving pig." Odo nods as she speaks. "Slipped your mind Thallia?" She nods, embarrassedly looking at the ground. "But what of you Master Magnus? Still with the silver tongue of yours? You could talk the ear off a troll with that!" The innkeeper smiles in jest, staring at the dapper sorcerer. "But I heard the black-blooded one speaking of Rappan Athuk? What kind of work brings you to that accursed place?" ![]()
![]() Thallia, ignoring the drunk man, continues speaking. "Of course. I'll get it right to you." Meanwhile, the drunken man seems to ignore the comment about tax collectors. "Rappa Thuk is... blur..." The man falls over, the drink already gone to his head. The innkeeper, Odo, steps out from behind the counter, his arms crossed. "Sorry about that gentlemen. The rabble'll be gone shortly" He speaks with an odd accent, his voice growling to match his muscled figure. As the drunks spot him moving, they dump some money on the table and begin to leave, uneasily staring at Odo. ![]()
![]() There may be some overlap. I'm currently reading through the book and seeing where I could place it, or where it would be. I like how you guys have set some of your own goals, because it makes it less difficult for me :) However, I will ensure that you know what your employer has given you as your task, and I'll post it here since you would already know. Your task is to find where a team of adventurers known as the Fire Hawks has disappeared to. They were last adventuring within Rappan Athuk, and it includes some high-profile individuals including Venthraine's own son. However, due to the aforementioned tension between Hallowfell and the other countries, he cannot directly act to investigate. ![]()
![]() As the party continues to speak to each other, Tallie (one of the serving women) comes up to them with a forced smile. "Sorry for your wait. What would you like today?" The other men are continuing to be rowdy, and one of them comes over to the table. "What... are you doing here?" The man is obviously drunk, his words slurring widely as he leans on the table. "You all look interesting..." ![]()
![]() Correct Tark. Travelers: 1d10 ⇒ 9
Paint peels from the wall as you awake, golden light peeking in from the windows. The cries of already drunken men come from below, four other visitors already having awoken and obtained drink. A single man also sits in the common room, staring at the chaos unfolding within the inn with disdain. Soon, events will be set in motion.
You are all within the upstairs portion of Bristleback's Inn, the centre of this small town. Run by Odo Bristleback and his family, they are the leaders within the town. Zelkor's Ferry information will be posted in the Campaign Info tab. EDIT: Link to the maps https://app.roll20.net/join/438096/uplYTw ![]()
![]() So, after I took time to look over all the submissions, I've come up with my (mostly) final list. Magnus Tate will be the Arcane support of the party. I've always had a soft spot for Dragon Disciples, and the good quality of your app pushed you above the others. Theragul will be the party cleric. Originally I was going to pick Jeanne for this spot, however the Tiefling managed to sneak in as Divine caster. Ranald runs in mostly unopposed. As he was the only Trapfinder within the applications, he was pretty much guaranteed a spot. However, this does not mean his application was lackluster, oh no. Jean D'Fleur, with a lovely backstory and a lovely plot hook easily manages to get into the party. The first frontliner of the group, I look forward to running a game with my second-ever Paladin. (PMs will be incoming about a more detailed code) Tark, our Dwarven friend, manages to get in mostly due to his already extant RP. I enjoyed reading his app, and that's why our somewhat stereotypical Dwarf is in the group. And finally, our sixth member is Gabr. Seems I have a thing for grabbing people that went out of the initial list, but that does not degrade the quality of their applications. I also wanted to include at least one ranged fighter, as you guys will probably need it in the adventures to come. Thank you all for submitting, and I hope to see you all for other potential Post-by-Plays. I'll be looking forward to hopefully adventuring with you in future. For those chosen, please dot both the discussion and gameplay tabs, which will be created shortly. You will have the next two days to finalize any mechanics, during which we will be able to RP. |
