Jean was born middle child to a large family in a mid sized city in Hallowfell. With three sisters and four brothers, he was largely neglected by his parents. Aside from this point, he led a fairly ordinary life, waiting tables and distributing drinks to the inn's various patrons.
This all changed the day he met Darla. She was a raven haired beauty, a guest of the inn. Jean was instantly smitten. Little did he know that Darla was a thief by trade, contracted to secure a peculiar artifact from town's temple to Shelyn. However, a complication stood between her and success. The temple was warded against evil, and a black heart such as hers would have little chance in penetrating its magical defenses.
Luckily for her, seducing Jean and convincing him to do the deed were easy enough. He remembers little of that fateful night. Only that he entered the temple and found the artifact exactly as his love described. Unluckily for him, even Darla was unaware of one, final safeguard placed on the item. When he grasped it in his hand, a searing pain shot up the boy's arm, searing him with strange elemental energies. In a daze, he stumbled out of the temple, only to fall unconscious on its steps.
The priests of the temple found him in the morning and were none too pleased. Compassionate souls that they were, they nursed him back to health and did what they could to stabilize the elemental energies coursing through his body. When Jean did finally regain consciousness and realized Darla's betrayal, he was quick to confess the whole affair. Unable to complete restitution for what he had done, it was mutually decided that Jean should do work for the temple, cleaning and the like. In time, he was inducted into the faith and his responsibilities expanded.
Now older and wiser in the ways of love, Jean has vowed to recover the artifact which set him on his path. He has heard rumor that Venthraine knows lore pertaining to its whereabouts and will gladly do what the wizard asks in exchange for his help.
(The exact nature of the artifact stolen can be the GM's prerogative.)
