Very Happy with War of Immortals

5/5

I got my copy earlier this week, and went through it page by page skimming all the new content. I'm very happy with what I've seen so far, and can't wait to dig into it more.

Flavorful, Awesome, but feels half-baked and unplayable in its current state

3/5

A lot of good stuff in this book. Amazing flavor and options for higher-level play is something I really enjoyed from this book and I think the mythic options here really delivered. I always enjoyed ideas and themes of fighting toe-to-toe with demigods and ascending to divinity, and it's something I've always felt was missing in the majority of TTRPGs. Now, I can do that with PF2e, and it's awesome.

But there is also a whole lot of jank in this book, the biggest of which is how Mythic Monsters are designed. As much as I would love to play and/or run a mythic campaign, I feel very apprehensive to do so because the way Mythic Monsters are designed makes mid to high level mythic unplayable, or at the very least unenjoyable to play.

I would love to be in a mythic campaign one day or even run one myself, but I just don't think mythic is playable in its current state. I really think this book could benefit from a big errata. There is something really really great going on here, but it needs alot of polishing.

We have Ascended!

5/5

I love everything in this book.
This team is truly mythic.
The overflowing lore in this book has me stunned.
I can not wait to see what comes next!

Hm. So in 2E the 1E Arcanist becomes Flexible Spellcaster Wizard?

Basically, yeah.

Flexible Spellcasting Wizards are called Arcanists, Flexible Spellcasting Druids are called Fey Callers, Flexible Spellcasting Clerics are called Ecclesiasts, and Flexible Spellcasting Witches are called Invokers.

A bit surprising how rare it is for character to be able to acquire immortality or even life span extension in many rpgs.

Immortality is more of a narrative than a mechanical thing, so there's not much point in making it a rule.

So Seneschal is defined as "a senior position filled by a court appointment within a royal, ducal, or noble household during the Middle Ages and early Modern period."

I don't feel like this gives us a great hint about the class though? Maybe a Bard archetype?

I wonder how different Enora (iconic Arcanist) will be under 2E compared to her 1E incarnation.

Reminds me of a Paladin as in knight of the palace.

My guess would be Champion of a cause or person rather than a deity.

Seneschals essentially ran the castle's/keep's day-to-day activities whenever the liege wasn't in a position to do so, which would DEFINITELY be the case if said liege was leading or assisting a campaign.

So Champion is definitely a strong contender, even if the Seneschal title is more metaphorical. The other possibilities to me are, oddly enough, Alchemist and Wizard in particularly support-oriented ways, and Sorcerer for particular arbitration with their more unalloyed bloodline kin.

I would guess roughly the same, but I will take it a step further and say it could be either a Champion or Bard appointed to represent a pantheon or a covenant.

Or, if it is a Champion appointed by a deity/pantheon, it might be to represent a particular deity’s area of concern, like Abadar’s concern for a city or wealth or Sarenrae’s concern for healing or redemption. If appointed by a faith or organized religion instead of by a deity or pantheon, what if they are a specially appointed champion for a particular outpost or area of concern for an organized religion with duties like the protection, custodianship, and administration of certain sacred sites, temples, particular worshippers, and sacred animals?

I know it's not financially viable to do spell card releases for smaller sets, but how about making the spells from this book and other source books available as print-on-demand via DriveThruCards? You used to do it for the Pathfinder Card Game for Society cards, so could you do the same here?

Well, today’s stream revealed what class the Seneschal is for - the Witch!

It was revealed that they are witches whose patron has somehow died or disappeared in the war of Immortals. But, the witch still has access to their pact with that patron, exposing them to that patron’s raw, and now unfiltered, power that is attached to them through their pact. As the witch attempts to learn how to master this untamed magic (of whatever magic tradition their pact was chosen to be at character creation - Arcane, Occult, etc.), they begin to take the place of their former patron! By the time the Seneschal gets to 20th level, they ARE a Patron and even have their own pacts with other witches that they are channeling magical power to.

Okay, seriously surprised that they'd use the name "Seneschal" for a Witch subclass. The meaning of the word literally has nothing to do with what Ashanderai just described, unless you reaaaaaally stretch the meaning of the word.

They are using it in the sense of someone running the keep, while the ruler is away. Your Patron is absent so you’re running things until they return or you become recognised as the Patron.

I'd say it's a good metaphorical use of the name.

Great home game potential for a plot about Baba Yaga going missing and having a witch of hers take her place. The more I learn about this book the more exciting it gets!

I looove the idea for seneschal. Was always weird to me that a witch was always dependent on their patron, even all the way to 20th level. If I ever make a witch (I had no interest before)it will likely be with that archetype.

Heck... Baba Yaga might have been one at first, back when she was still a young witch in (basically) pre-historic Russia! :3

Other revelations from the stream included:

Warrior of Legend (“a high risk, high reward” class archetype for Fighter) has a Doom (as in like a curse) - think of Achilles who is the inspiration for this class archetype. The Doom is a particular type of damage that you have a cursed weakness to that is broadly defined (Piercing is given as an example) getting powers in exchange. As you gain in level and experience you learn more about yourself and dial in on a more exact definition of your what exactly your Doom is - an arrow was given as what a piercing damage Doom might eventually become defined as. In exchange for this curse, you get “really significant powers”. Also, when you take damage from your cursed damage, you get the Doomed Condition. But, while you Doomed and you get closer to death, you fight harder and it opens up lots of other Heroic abilities; like Heroic Defiance, temp HP, bonuses to saves, new stances and things that enable you to “lash out”.
- They have a 14th level feat called Only My Doom May Claim Me, which grants Resistance to all damage, except their cursed weakness.

The Animist class has 4 Animist Practices and 2 were presented as samples:
- Seer: Sees the spirit world and is more open to what is in the spirit world. More likely to find some of the darker spirits that other animists might not find.
- Medium: Bond directly with an Apparition, focusing on one Apparition over others, not looking to find other spirits as much as other animists.

EXEMPLAR presented 2 sample builds:
- Sky King Eternal build
o Battle Hymn to the Lost ability (unclear is this is a feat or some other class feature): Rend the veil between worlds with your attack. Not only do you strike enemies, but the spiritual force of you as a divine hero cuts through the enemy’s soul and the veil between worlds with your attack. A bunch of other spirits will then flow out from the enemy and attack other enemies in the area and maybe even revivify your fallen allies.
- Creations Beast build is a beefy, weaponless brawler kind of build. It is Gilgamesh and Hercules -inspired.
o Hands of the Wildling Ikon – Uses fists, gauntlets, claws or other attacks like that.

NEPHILIM
Two sample Lineages were shown:
- Ganzi
- Battleblooded (Valkyries & Einherjar)

Achilles' weakness was in his heel -- and not only is that a tough target to hit in a fight, PF doesn't really get down to that level of detail. IMO a weakness to any piercing damage might be too much. Hard to tell without testing it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

How about a weakness to piercing that only triggers on crits? If a crit is a hit to the most vulnerable area, for Achilles that could well be the heel.

They of course can use whatever name they want for their subclasses, but since they normally don't give out (sub)class names twice (some 1E exceptions excluded, which I think were by accident), I still think the name should have been kept for a more appropiate subclass/archetype, i.e. for a Bard, Investigator or the like.

I'm not certain where you get that idea. Almost every other Sourcebook has had box card sets for their associated Spells. Just because it hasn't been announced yet doesn't mean there won't be one. If it turns out there are no Spells, then there won't be one.

My PFS Baba Yaga Witch is my attempt at the concept of the Patron as the object of the Witch's focused study rather than the source of their power (a fascinating concept brought forward by James Jacobs during the class playtest).

I feel the possibilities opened by the Seneschal would fit perfectly.

My subscription says it will ship in 11 to 21 business days. That makes it October 18th before the first lucky subscribers get their PDF and start their AMA. If I'm one of the lucky first few, I'll start answering questions then.

I wonder, since the Ganzi was confirmed as one of the lineages for the Nephilim that's being added, will the Aphorite also be added in the book? I don't see why it wouldn't, but I've seen, like... NO ONE playing or even talking about aphorites anywhere online, so I don't know if they'd be popular enough to continue.

I think aphorites are the type that gets basically no fanfare, but there would be a fair amount of backlash if it wasn't in the book, y'know? I know I would be upset but that's just me being an autistic little collector of things that wants to have all the outer planar lineages because it makes the happy chemicals go brr

I fully agree with you, not gonna lie. Just because I don't really have any aphorite concepts doesn't mean I don't want it to come back!

Doubt it. Aside from how subs have not been hitting on the first day for the past few months, Monday the 14th is a federal holiday in the US and the New-Physical-Product-Releases-For-October-2024 thread states, “Begin Shipping Estimate: 10/15/2024”. So, the earliest would be Tuesday. But, my money is on no earlier than Wednesday, if the release pattern from the past few months holds true to form.

Yeah, they wanted to have more time with these rules to do them justice. Also, all APs currently announced were written during a time when the rules either didn'T exist or were still being written. And that's too big of a system to use half-done rules during development.
