South of a forbidding range of mountain peaks lies a land of boundless resources and untold opportunity. The Mwangi Expanse has been home to an untold diversity of cultures and peoples since time immemorial, hosting powerful, isolated city states that have often paid little attention to their neighbors. Yet the turning tides of fortune have begun to usher in changes that are rippling across the world. As a band of scholars from an ancient university venture north to aid a disaster-torn Avistan. A revolution-forged nation seeks powerful allies against foreign aggression. An undead god, once a symbol of hope to his declining nation, now grows jealous enough to turn on his self-proclaimed kin. Whether you are a diplomat seeking leverage from the most difficult of positions, a spy seeking the subtlest hint of danger from your surroundings, a guardian hoping to protect your home and people, or a warrior striking back at tyrants both native and foreign, this guide to the Mwangi Expanse offers you the ultimate resource to explore a realm of magic, monsters, and intrigue!

The problem is in the physical book. The PDF is correct.

You know, it never occurred to me to ask this, but I'm intensely curious: is the cover art supposed to represent a specific locale in the Expanse, or is it a more general "get the vibe of the Mwangi across" illustration not rooted in a specific city or nation?

It's Nantambu. You can see the Ten Magic Warriors depicted on the pillars. (One that gives me special joy is Shifting Frog, whose mask is a frog with a tadpole tail.)

Hi all! Mikhail Rekun here, I'm one of the freelancers who wrote for this book -- I'm the guy that wrote the gnolls, the Mbe'ke dwarves, the Mwangi Jungle, and the Terwa Uplands. Just want to say thank you for all the enthusiasm, especially for my beloved floofy gnolls. :D

My veeeeeeeery first D&D character, back in the misty depths of [checks calendar, feels himself turning to dust]... long ago... was a gnoll. Terribly emo gnoll, but I've had a love for the fluffy-eared critters ever since, and for hyenas as well. I'm fairly sure I've been wheedling Eleanor for a chance to write gnolls since I started freelancing for Paizo.

Yessssssss.

Each of the gnoll heritages was based on one of the four hyena subspecies, so when I was looking at aardwolves I was like "...welp, gnoll/halfling." I'm pretty sure the "Many are skeptical that you are in fact a gnoll" line comes from Eleanor originally, though.

She is absolutely a mystery writer turned amateur sleuth. I would like a miniseries voiced by Jennifer Lewis immediately.

...I'd been thinking Angela Lansbury when I wrote her, honestly, but I think Jennifer Lewis is the superior choice. And yes, she'd be a great patron for PCs.

One of my proudest moments as a Paizo freelancer was getting the following sentence into print: "The centaur is Jaldan (NG female centaur apprentice shaman), the PCs’ contact. The children are Alayn and Linnit (CN male and female human adorable brats), a pair of young troublemakers" (PFS1-15: Blooming Catastrophe, pg. 5)

Also me! Unlike her Katapeshi counterpart, Gold Beetle is more focused on the nation-building than the abolitionism, though it's definitely part of her agenda.

There was a note in the gnoll turnover on this... -Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan: Hyenas, International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, 1998, pg. 96

That document was extremely useful in digging up some more authentic hyena-related myths to draw on. The Right-Hand Blood feat also came from the same document:

"Another belief considers that the flesh of the right side of a striped hyena has healing properties against many illnesses but the left side is poisonous." (Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan: Hyenas, International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, 1998, pg. 96)

I would very much like to see more of Gold Beetle.

Also, the Mbe’ke are killer, and I say that as someone who normally finds dwarves boring as dirt - well done!

I am really happy with this development and change of policy at Paizo in regards to writing mentions of NPCs without stat blocks like this. When I wrote the Kasai Gazetteer way back in AP#54 Jade Regent, The Empty Throne, I wanted the NPCs named in it to reflect their cultural titles and roles in their society and I was told I had to change them to class titles like Druid, Cleric, or the generic term of "priestesses" instead of Miko, Wizard instead of Onmyoji, Rogue or Samurai instead of Yakuza, or Expert instead of something like bath attendant. I always felt that GMs would be able to figure out what they wanted the NPC to be, anyway, whether the article intended the NPC to be the way the GM uses that NPC or not. I got shot down, but I wasn't good at presenting my argument at the time. You should be proud!

So far I've LOVED both the Gnolls and the Mbe'ke dwarves. The story that you start the Mbe'ke out with was a really nice touch, and I think you did a great job of making them feel like dwarves, but also their own unique culture.

I really like the design of Right-hand blood. It's an elegant bit to make the left hand side a critical fail for the various checks, instead of trying to invent your own new poison effects from it. Really nice parity.

I haven't gotten to your other two sections, but I'm eagerly waiting for them!

Unless you are a subscriber, it doesn't work that way. If you ordered a physical copy without subscribing, that physical copy is all you will be getting. PDFs will go on sale separately a week from tomorrow, on July 7th.

Ye should ask in customer service if you can make your purchase be instead subscribing just for this single book. That way you would get pdf for the same amount of money. And if you just bought it, they shouldn't have processed your purchase yet

For that bloodline, since it's dragon-related, does it have you choose a dragon type just like the existing draconic bloodline? That'll certainly do math things if that's true, lol.

It does, and it also says it counts as the existing Draconic bloodline for feats and such.

Awesome. That did indeed do some math things, lol. Once I have the PDF I'll be able to fully confirm that heritage and 1st level feat counts. Otherwise I think things are close enough that I see how this book updates the combo counts.

I asked this before and it got no answers or ideas, so I'll pop back in with it again (seen it asked elsewhere on the internet, too). How do conrasu communicate? Do they have lungs and breath? For a playable ancestry, it's a bit rough not having any context clues for how to do that...

I dont have the book but I heard they count as plants, so whatever people assume for leshy speech is probably applicable for Conrasu.

But leshies have mouths! Conrasu do not. They're just energy balls inside wooden exoskeletons, with no inkling of humanoid faces. Unless I'm forgetting something really important.

It doesn't actually say. They are Aeon, Conrasu, and Plant. They don't have any immunity to inhale effects, which means they breath. They also don't have immunity to drowning, and thus must hold their breath.

They have languages, so "speak", but I'm not sure how this speech works. I imagine sound comes from their Cores (those black gem things) like a speaker system. Arbiters, who are also Aeons, speak but don't have anything that resembles a mouth. So I suppose the answer to your question is "Yes, they breath and talk. Outsiders be weird yo"

I mean by RAW it's not stated, but I'd certainly allow them in my game.

There might be a PFS ruling of some sort for it?

Just wanted to report an error found in my .PDF. It's just a minor thing.

For the Shisk's 9th, 13th, and 17th level feats, their right-hand labeling says "Level 9/13/17" instead of the usual "Feat 9/13/17".

Kinda? Slightly? Like, the imperial dragons are mentioned in a sidebar as evidence that dragons CAN be divine instead of arcane. It's mostly left up in the air, so to speak.

Specifically, it's just referred to as the "Wyrmblessed" bloodline, and it's got a huge cultural importance to the Taralu dwarves.

I think so!

3 people marked this as a favorite.

One thing I think PFS needs to address, or maybe in a FAQ/errata section for this book, is which saving throw do the targets for the Elemental/Imperial dragon's Dragon Breath focus spell need to roll? Most can be assumed Reflex, but there's Umbral Dragon's negative damage (which could be Fortitude or Reflex), and Sovereign Dragon's mental damage (which probably needs to be Will).

There's also the possibility that Dragon Instinct barbarians might be able to access these new options for their Breath Weapon later on. If so, there's three options that aren't cones or lines. Sea, Sky and Underground dragons get a 10-foot burst within 30 feet. So if Barbarians have to reduce the area in half for using it within 1-hour of the last use, does that only affect the 10-foot burst? Or also the "within 30-feet" part?

Just questions to ask right now. Hopefully it can be noted now for discussion with the Design team consultants later.

'counts as existing...' I read that as another dragon disciple option.

Since they speak languages and must breath, but do not have mouths, I envision Conrasu sounding somewhat like wood wind instruments when they speak as the air is inhaled and exhaled through the holes, grooves, and channels of the hardened parts of their wooden bodies, like wooden pipes, with the rate of their inhalations and exhalations providing the rhythm and beat to their voices. This lends them a somewhat musical quality to their voices, but can also sound discordant on occasion when distressed like a new music student just starting to learn to play their instrument.

We we’re brainstorming about the soundtrack for the Strength of Thousands trailer. No decisions yet, but I’m leaning towards something cinematic, a la Wakanda. But a playlist leaves so much more room!

I've been looking for some good atmospheric music as well. Pity Wagadu Chronicles isn't out yet — that'd be awesome to have right now. Far Cry 2 and Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan have some good music. I'm also using some music from Final Fantasy XII, World of Warcraft, and Beyond Good & Evil. Some good new age-y music on youTube (enjoying Diane Arkenstone's stuff). The Ambient Worlds channel also did some cool stuff with Black Panther music.

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to hear what you're listening to.

New? Generally not. "GNOLL WEAPON FAMILIARITY: You were taught to be a hunter and a raider. You are trained with flails, khopeshes, mambeles (Pathfinder Lost Omens Gods & Magic 120), spears, and war flails." The word "flindbar" does not appear.
