One of the best in the catalogue

5/5

I finally got around to buying my own copy today, but I've loved this book since release! Giving some oddball Ancestries a chance to shine (my beloved Androids!) with not only interesting rules, but phenomenal writeups of their varied ethnic groups and cultures. I'd gladly buy a second Ancestry Guide if it hit on some of my more esoteric favs - Lashunta, Minotaurs, Wyrwoods - with similar care here.

I can't praise the art enough, either.

5/5

An excellent book full of a bevy of options for all the previously released ancestries as well as tons of new ancestry and versatile heritage options. As standard for Lost Omens books it's also accompanied by a bevy of details and lore for all the folks of the Inner Sea and beyond. A very excellent book for anyone who wants to break out of the Core Rulebook options. I think some of my favorite additions are the geniekin heritages. Being able to have a touch of elemental power on any of your favorite ancestries is so much fun. The available variety is incredible.

5/5

This book definitely helps enrich Golarion with more unique demihuman races. I only wish a few more races were covered. Such as minotaurs, caligni, munavri, rougarou, nagaji, vishkanya. But, it's still good!

Oh, that one has easy explanation besides the fun factor:

If you wield two handed weapon, by raw taking your grip off is free, but taking hold of it again is manipulate action aka costs one action.

So with that feat you could open door with your tail while holding greatsword without spending two actions(one to open door and second to take grip on your two handed weapon again)

Theoretically.

In practice? How many times have you had to open a door mid combat?
OR
How many times have you had a GM tell you: "Yeah, you need to regrip your weapon because you were the one who kicked the door open and there were enemies on the other side and now we're in combat, you didn't have time to regrip it."?

So far, 50 games of 2e under various GMs (Society games), I haven't seen this happen to a single pc.

I've seen (door being opened in middle of combat) multiple times in 1e :D

Like, you won't see it much in society play because society play encounters are never combined together or never involve players ignoring them completely to do them later with stealth or such.

(On sidenote, opening door was just example, point was that it would be useful whenever two handed weapon tiefling has to do something that requires one hand free and is considered reasonably simple to do with tail)

Hard to tell what comes from where, but picking at it and using my point system (which seems to be more or less accurate).

0pt: Dex, Cha, -Wis, free boost
2pt: Darkvision
0pt: 25' speed
0pt: 8hp
0pt: Languages - Common, Shadowtongue

Heritage: Shadow Blending
Ancestry Feat: Illusory disguise innate spell
Ancestry Feat: Shadow Stride

In the end, Oreads should just get a +1 AC for their heritage ability.

Is this stat block getting that though? AC 19 comes to 10+6 full plate+2 trained+1 level.

It IS an extreme AC for level 1, so you might be right.

Might as well look at everything though. Perception is correct, languages, number of skills...is actually 1 more than a fighter should have with the class and int alone so there's a possibility here, skill bonus is correct, AC and saves correct, HP correct, reactions correct, speed correct, attack bonus are both correct, and finally power attack is a 1st level feat.

Looking at the other geniekin, they all have 6 skills no matter what class they have, with Oreads only getting 5. So, still possible that Oreads are getting, say, survival as a bonus skill, but it doesn't fit as well as other options and might be nothing.

No, it was late last night and I was not keeping my stuff straight on the AC numbers. The Oread is not the one with the anomalous AC, the Undine is. So, I'm not sure what the Oread gets. I think you might be right about the skill selection, but what about that 1st level ancestral feat for the Oread? Maybe something we cannot see in Bestiary stats, like a bonus to it's maximum bulk encumbrance...?

But, the Undine, who is clearly a sorcerer by it's stats, got a 16 AC. But, when we break that down it comes to 10+0 for no armor +2 DEX +2 trained +1 level = 15. So, where does that +1 AC come from? So, I'm not sure which the Undine would get for it's heritage; a swim speed of 25 ft. or a bonus to AC for... it's fish-like scales? Maybe one is for its heritage and the other is for it's Ancestral feat at 1st level...

After all, I had figured that the Sylph's Wind's Guidance, the Suli's Elemental Assault, and the Ifrit's Primal Innate spell for Produce Flame were all like 1st level Ancestral feats rather than hereditary abilities, though that is just a guess that could go the other way around just as easily. For example, the Ifrit's innate spell could be it's hereditary ability and the resistance to fire could be it's ancestral feat, which makes sense when you look at heredities like Forge Dwarf, Arctic Elf, Seer Elf, and Wellspring Gnome. It could go either way. I was just going on the hunch that attack abilities may well be more likely to be from feats rather than the heredity baseline.

You know, upon further review, aside from the lack of Heritage ability, ancestry feat, and Background, and what you discovered on the skills, I can find only 1 other thing that is different for the Oread in Bestiary 2 with those ability modifiers and stats vs. a Human with those same ability modifiers and stats. The Oread is a level 1 creature with a level 2 item - Full Plate armor.

Now that we know all the new Ancestries and nearly all the Versatile Heritages that will be in this book, how about some speculation on the non-Versatile Heritages that we think will be in this book?

Here is what I am speculating/predicting/hoping for based on previously published stuff I have found from 1E and some heritages I have heard spoiled here and elsewhere by Paizo staff (in bold):

4.
5.

- Kobold
1. Crafter/Trapper?
2. Rare-Scaled Outcast?
3. Wyrmcrowned?
4. Forest?
5.

4. Shelled/Armored?
5. Glider/Pterodon-like with membranous wings?

- Orc
1. Mountain
2. Scent Trackers?
3. Stealthy Stalkers?
4. Wizardbane (like Ancient-Blooded Dwarf or Elfbane Hobgoblin)?
5.

- Ratfolk
1. Quilled?
2. Flying Squirrel?
3. Winter-coated?
4. Water Rats/Swimmers?
5. Scavenger/Barterer/Crafter (deals more often w/other ancestries by scavenging and trading for stuff)?
6. Gadgeteer?

- Tengu (I got nothing)
1.

5.

New Ancestries premiering in this book and their Heritages:

4.
5.

...And now a moment of silence for our dearly missing Shoony...

Ooh, confirmed snowy kitsune? That's great- I've got a whole family of arctic fox kitsune as characters.

For kitsune, I believe we've also had a fox-form heritage confirmed.

When is this book coming out? Is the release date stated on the page still accurate?

In addition to the product page (this one) showing a release date of Feb 24,

the Release Schedule page (linked in the footer of every page), shows it as currently "in stock" and the Customer Service forum thread "February 2021 New Releases" shows it as part of this month's shipping.

Given that it's already in stock at the warehouse, I'd say it's still accurate.

I also got my authorization today, so I assume they're still on schedule. They've had some slippage recently, but not more than a couple days.

Yeah, I got my authorization today, as well. So, they are definitely on track to ship this book on time.

I've lately had the payment hit my account a day or three before it actually ships, so Nicolas may just be early in the queue.

Wow, I just got hit with the payment transaction on my account a short while ago, too, and got a notification email about one of my 2 pending packages already being dropped in the mail with a tracking number. (It is not a package with any products that were a part of my subscription - just stuff I ordered with the holiday discount a couple weeks back.)

Correct, the money was actually hit my account not a precert like usual and they also generated a tracking number, they just haven't sent it out yet.

Maybe they are trying to pre-pack and ship a bunch of orders because of the usps delays that have been going on.

Two of my players are USPS carriers and they are beyond understaffed and behind schedule my January subscription got to my states distribution center on time but sat there for 10 days before they got it to my box, and I was too busy with work to pick it up.

Either way with a tracking number made and payment taken hopefully the pdf will drop for us subbers in a few days and we can do the normal spoilers without posting the whole text game like usual.

I kinda want a redcap heritage for the sprite.

That would be beautiful if that's the reason why, because it would make the day 1 wave much larger.

Got the weekly newsletter, this week the race shown is catfolk. The art for them is just great though. One looks pale blue and has a sort of bone staff weapon, and the other more monkish. Wonder if either has any significance to mechanics? Either way, it looks amazing.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

The Amurrun on the left makes me think they might be from Tian Xia's Valashmai Jungle. The Catfolk there are described as having similar markings to leopards and having gold or silver fur. The one on the right may be from there as well, but the left one really evokes it for me. Has be excited.

Valashmai isn't talked about much. So maybe their writeups will go into a bit of detail on the location and some of its other inhabitants.

Any word on expected PFS sanctioning for this book?

According to the Organized Play post on the Blog this past week, we should know what is sanctioned or not from this book on 24 February when they post their article and update the character options page for PFS.

Specifically, Organized Play's statement regarding the sanctioning of this book was, "We also are on target to have Lost Omens: Ancestry Guide ready on release day (February 24th)."

I really hope my sub order will be shipped this week, preferably today/tomorrow :)

Yeah I'm very curious as to what the last race is. I'm already excited enough just with the announced stuff, but still. If no one gets their copy and is generous enough to spoil it, hopefully luis will on Wednesday when hes on with Know Direction.

We're not going to hold back sending anyone's copy of the book out. It would be mean to both our fans and also to our warehouse team. We understand some people will get their books early and share information here or other location. That's fine! Some people will hear about the information for the first time on the Know Direction tomorrow. We try to do our best to get information about our products out to people through various channels to get as much coverage as possible.

I hope those of you who get your subscriber PDFs have fun with your early peek and are mindful about not sharing direct copy-pasted details from the book like we always ask.

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts about the book!

Luis is such a great coworker. Ditto to him.

Solicitations go to retailers 8-9 months before products launch, our store pages go live then, and the trade and deep fan sites break the news. Then subscribers get PDFs about the same time I can get product our to reviewers, at best. Print copies trail that because there is not enough of me to do all the things. That big online retailer doesn't have our products until weeks after we launch. The pandemic reduced some international distributor shipping from air to boat. Hype builds pressure, but this system is a drip irrigation soaker hose. It is more of a release arc than a day. Please just enjoy the leaks for the fun of it.
