The best intro product of a TTRPG I have ever played. Recommended continuation: Troubles in Otari and/or Abomination Vaults.

Pathfinder 2e's Beginner's Box deserves its 5 star rating

5/5

I love the Beginner's Box, because it's a great tool for introducing new players, and for new GMs, even those who are familiar with the system. It's meant for someone new to play it each time, whether that's the GM or some of your players. To that end it focuses on introducing new concepts at a great pace, accentuated by the 'how to play' blurbs found in the book. These concepts are introduced in a natural and meaningful way while giving players a room to stretch their legs. By that of course I mean that they can go wild in a dungeon crawl and really show their excitement for learning a new system.

The scenario is a two-session (four hours each usually) dungeon crawl which gradually introduce various mechanics of the game, going from simple things like fighting rats, to gaining loot, to learning consequences of navigating dungeons in a particular way, to skill challenges, and solving puzzles and using knowledge of the area to your advantage.

Each of these things is important to a player, but just as important for a GM to figure out how to manage. It never throws too much at you at once, either as a GM or a player, and so it remains pretty manageable, when you adhere to the four person party recommendation. Five people might get a little claustrophobic.

By the end of it, the players will face their "final exam" of everything they've learned. The players should feel pretty powerful in this one, and I DID make some adjustments when my players were doing particularly well, just to keep them on their toes, which they loved, but don’t go overboard, especially if you’re not familiar with PF2e balancing.

For players: There's not much new stuff for a veteran player, but a first run through will provide a fun dungeon crawl with your friends. It always helps a GM to have someone knowledgeable about the system.

For GMs: Be sure to read how the monsters are played. This is commonly referred to as "morale," and it's crucial that you play your monsters as smart as they're supposed to be. Some of the enemies in this are clever, and some may not have as much experience as others. It's crucial to ensure that you play the monsters as written, especially the final fight. That one CAN be tough, but in the end, your players should emerge feeling like accomplished heroes.

As a closing statement, (though keep reading afterward if you plan to run on Foundry VTT) the Beginner’s Box has great value, and even comes with cool art and pawns, (tokens used to represent the monsters) as well as giving some background lore on the place that you’re in while providing some nice segues into newer adventures as well as good ideas for starting new ones of your own. It also has some magic items which aren’t used in the adventure (unless you want them to be!), some of which even come with art. All in all, massive value from this one, especially if you plan to get into PF2e, or are trying to get someone else into PF2e. My players and I had an amazing time both times, and I as a GM am VERY satisfied.

Another thing for GMs who plan to run this on foundry VTT: PDF to Foundry is a great module for this one, ESPECIALLY if you’re new. Importing the Game Master's Guide PDF that comes with the BB sets up a lot of stuff for you, which is useful, not just to save time, but to learn how walls are used on Foundry, as well as the use of map notes in order to make the gaming experience smoother. However, I should warn you that not everything is immediately laid out, as you’ll still need to place loot, (which just means making a loot actor and dragging the proper items from the compendium – I suggest the Quick Insert module to expedite the process) as well as adjusting certain things to your specific liking, such as lighting and other effects if you’d like. My advice for setting up loot actors is to change the loot actor token from its default treasure chest image, into a blank .png, then place it over the treasure chests/other lootable things on the map, and so what players will simply see is a nice and natural clickable area on the map for them to walk up to and loot. You should play with the VTT before running, and figure out what it does before trying out TOO many modules. You don’t need to port forward anything, so don’t worry in case you’re confused about that. Lastly, if you hit P, you get a useful party overview, which is helpful for managing who has what skills, as well as two very nice buttons in the exploration tab: one to rest the party, and the other to allow players to roll checks and automatically show who succeeded based on the parameters you set. I.e. you ask for a DC 15 athletics check, and people can click on it in the chat and it shows their roll and degree of success. Foundry is very customizable, so it’s easy to go overboard with modules, but do test to make sure every one of them works before getting more.

Thanks, Paizo, sincerely. :)

5/5

The very first adventure any new GM should play. The adventure is written as if you’re brand new to any tabletop RPG so you can run this without having to read the Core Rulebook. It’s learn as you play. The adventure can be completed in two sessions and has its own little bestiary if you want to continue running a game with just the content in this box.

The only downside, however, is that it's not a very heroic adventure. You're pursuing a pretty simple job, there's not much of a narrative, and doesn't really show off what you can do role-play wise.

It raises the bar of what a TTRPG starter set should look like.

5/5

I had been curious about Pathfinder 2e for a while. I read the Core Rulebook and The GM Guide and was excited to start playing Pf2. I was however a bit nervous about how to teach the system to other new players. Or, I was until I got The Beginner Box.

It's got everything you need for the first tiers of play and is beautifully laid out in easy portions that makes the Pathfinder 2e system readily available for players and GM.

Paizo really didn't skim on the quality of the set. It's got a guide for players, that is very handy to pass around the table and a smaller version of The GM Guide that lays out most of the information you need to start playing Pf2 ASAP.

Haven't received an email yet from CS, but starting this afternoon, the link for the Remastered version of the Beginner Box finally personalized the file. So it's fixed on my end now.

The new pawns and art for the creatures in here look great. Although, they use the old art for the Wyrmling Green Dragon/Juvenile Horned Dragon, but I can spot new art of them on the map's token itself. I wonder what that is about?

Also, what is up with the Reefclaw using a Large pawn spot? It still says it is Small in the statblock. Very weird to see.

I think the problem was that it kinda "replace" the owlbear as a monstrous animal. The person updating the pawns maybe didn't realize it was actually a small creature, or could even be that they asked how to deal with it, but the kerfuffle all around the virtual office made it so they never got an answer back before the deadline, and thus it ended up splipping through the cracks).

If you already got you authorization email (which you should have gotten by now), you will need to contact customer service and hope they catch your ticket before your stuff is shipped. Otherwise, it'll be sent with your next sub shipment.

As much as I'm glad that we've got this out finally, there's things I'm seeing that just make me wonder, why was this never addressed, and why did it have to get so much more complicated than it wasn't in the first place?

Also, they've still got some OGL to ORC issues to take care of that I've spotted.

I love this box so I'm looking forward to digging into this updated version and seeing all these changes.

One weird thing that I noticed on a quick skim through the PDF files though is that the ORC/remastered pawns have a triple border (blue/red/green) now that overlaps the illustrations and looks fairly awkward compared to the single (red) border on the OGL pawns. Can't tell if this is tech issue or a purposeful change but it definitely looks better with the single border.

Yep, those borders are kind of unecessary. Frankly I'd love to have a borderless version as well. It would be much easier to print them out and glue them on some greyboard.

@Paizo pretty please? :)

Anyone know how I'm supposed to be contacting Paizo or what their typical response time is like? I emailed customer.service@paizo.com on 3/15 hoping that they could include the beginner box with my subscription shipment before it went out 3/22, but never got a response (I also followed up on 3/20). When the subscription order arrived without the beginner box order I thought okay bummer they didn't get my email in time, but that's okay. Now I'd like to just have the box ship immediately instead of waiting until the next sub ships, but it says I have to contact support to do that. Support hasn't replied to my original inquiry, and I put in a new request to have it ship separately on 3/25 which also hasn't seen a response on yet.

This has popped back up on Amazon as In Stock, but it's under the Pathfinder 2e Beginner Box. However, Amazon isn't always the best at separating things. Does anyone know if the Remastered version has made it to Amazon and/or other retailers? If not, do we have an ETA for that to happen?

I know it's been asked already but that was over a week ago and we still haven't received any word. It would be nice to get an idea if this is out in the wild, and when we might expect it if it is not already out.

How this works is that Paizo send the books to distributors, and THOSE send the books to stores and amazon. Paizo don't know more than that. They sent the remastered boxes to distributors. That's the most that Paizo could tell you. The only ones that can answer you for these specific questions you have are the retailers and Amazon themselves.

Hi,

I have a question about a specific skill check DC:

Spoiler:

In the abandoned storeroom is a locked door. The description says to open it, use Thievery DC 15 or Athletics DC 25. In the GM Core book it says to force open a structure, use the Thievery DC +5 for Athletics DC - which would be DC 20.

Is there a reason this differs?

Kind regards
Danii

Couple things I noticed:

Merisiel's character sheet still has the old Rogue weapon proficiencies.

Two encounters, 11 and 12, have the same title (though it was like this before as well).

The Xulgath tokens on map 2 have the old art.

The Male Dwarf Fighter pawn is a very smol guy.

You aren't kidding. The Fighter, Dwarf, Male REALLY shrank in the update. Looks comical next to the Fighter, Dwarf, Female.

Currently running this as PbP on the forums here and trying to extract the image for the

monster in the adventure:
cinder rat
but none of the instances of the image in the April 15 update PDFs is working--I either get something different (if I try to extract from the pawn sheet) or a placeholder image of an arrangement of different dice (if I try to extract from the Game Master's Guide). There also isn't art of the monster in the Monster Core or Bestiary 1 despite appearing in both volumes. I can get something sorta-usable (but small, as commented above) if I use pdfimages, but it's not as clear as everything else I've been able to extract so far.

Would it be possible to get a nice, high quality version of this creature? There's a gorgeous version in the Foundry module, but it'd be nice to have everything in one place without having to dig through those assets.

Hum, using TokenTool, I managed to extract it without problem from the Game Master Guide at a good 812x1083 resolution. What tools are you using that give you random other images?

(Yeah, TokenTool is not the most intuitive tool name to do this, but it have been the best one I have found to extract art from Paizo's PDFs.)

I'm running Linux and using either Evince or pdfimages from the poppler-utils package. Looks like TokenTool should run on my machine, I'll give it a try when I'm more awake. It's Java and almost certainly doesn't use the same PDF implementation as the tools I've tried so far.

I received this Beginner Box when I purchased a Humble Bundle in 2022. It was a stepping stone for me into GMing Pathfinder 2e. Coming from Dungeons and Dragons 5e, I loved everything about the Beginner Box and Pathfinder 2e system.

I've lately been keeping abreast with the Pathfinder 2e Remaster products. I enjoy collecting the physical books, (I love the sketch covers,) and running games in person. Learning that the Beginner Box received the remaster treatment piqued my interest. I purchased another copy of the Beginner Box from an online vendor who claimed that it was a Remaster edition, but it was an exact copy of the Beginner Box I already had.

I'm not sure if this has already been disclosed, but did the physical Beginner Box product receive the Remaster treatment, or is it only the digital offerings (like the PDF and vtt resources?)

Thanks!

Stensin wrote:

If you previously owned the BB PDF, you got the updated/errated version for free earlier in March. If you buy it now, you'll get both versions.

But the physical product has new pawns and newly-printed versions of the handbooks and the adventure, that corresspond to the edits made in the PDF.

The new physical product is an ORC product, and has had all OGL material removed.

Hmm... The product image on the Exclusive Books web page appears to be that of the pre-remastered box (i.e. the OGL product).

(The remastered box, i.e. the ORC product, is mostly green without any red on the sides & says "REMASTER" below the 'Second Edition' logo at the top right corner. [Compare the image above with that on the Exclusive Books product page.])

However, the ISBN (EAN) given on the same page matches that of the remastered product, so...

I also can't tell which version is being sold...

Sorry. Hope you're able to sort it out.

Might be that specific store's distributor not taking orders for it. From what I know, Paizo is willing to take order from any distributors, but it's on the distributors to order or not, based on what they think they can successfully distribute. Some distributors will only order some products if they get certain number of enquiries from stores. Could also be that the distributor is still holding copies of the non-remastered version, and are unwilling to order the remaster as long as they have not sold through the old copies.

... There's a lot more scenarios possible, but that's the ones that I could think from the top of my head right now.

The Remastered physical version of the Beginner Box has the standard "Second Edition" in the upper right corner of the front cover, and also includes the word "Remastered" just under that.

You can see it clearly if you open the image above in a new tab and enlarge it.

In the link you posted, the image is from the earlier OGL version, since the upper right corner branding does not include "remastered".

HOWEVER, it is also possible that your vendor is using an old image. It would be worth asking them to look at the actual box they are sending you and confirm that it is the Remastered version.

The very last page is a copy-paste of the last page of the Game Master guide, and the one before was reprinting stuff from like two page before. Considering PDFs have quick search functionalities usually built into the readers, they aren't really as needed virtually.

But also, these were the "back cover" pages, and many recent PDFs skip those for some reason. We don't know if it's just some wombled settings, or if it's a voluntary change.

I just checked. The information missing (from the inside and outside of the back cover) from the Player's Handbook pdf is important stuff about getting knocked out, getting wounded, dying, and some other stuff. This is either deliberate (in which case IMO somebody at Paizo made a wrong decision) or a serious screw up.

I haven't noticed "many PDFs" skipping the back cover pages. I suppose now I'm going to have to check every pdf. :-(

IMO Paizo should fix this.

All that information about getting knocked out, wounded, dying, and the condition stuff, are all also on page 68 to 71 (70 to 73 in the PDF readers). This is reprinted info condensed on two pages for easy access when using physical books. The two missing pages are not even mentioned in the table of conntent.

There is no missing info that I can find in the PDF I'm reading.

The Player Reference cards should be available for purchase as a pack of five (four players & one GM).

If I buy the PDF, do I get the Foundry module?

Shadow Lodge

No, they are sold by different companies, why would you?

Judging from the bundle product page, if you buy the Foundry version you will get the PDF as well.

Probably best to wait for Foundry to put up their remastered version before committing though.

The Foundry module has already been remastered.

Oh, good. They nerfed the final boss.

Final Boss:
The dragon used to have a Breath Weapon DC of 24, just shy of extreme. Now it's DC 21, the high DC for a level 4 monster, as is normal for Breath Weapons.
