Really fun dungeon crawl

5/5

Actually tops the 1E beginner box

5/5

Context: I own the 2E Beginner Box in both PDF and print (where it truly shines).

The good: This box really offers unparalleled value for money in terms of the physical components. Everything you need to play is here. I especially liked the fact that six player reference cards were included, making them useful for games that include more than the four included pregens. Also noteworthy is the selection of pawns, which makes an ideal supplement to the Bestiary Box with respect to additional low-level baddies. The included adventure also seems well-crafted. Finally, I love that -- unlike the 1E beginner box -- the rules are fully compatible with the "full-fat" game. These factors combine to make the package compelling, even for established players.

The bad: Providing a flip-mat with one blank side would have better supported homebrew adventures, possibly extending the utility of the box. Speaking of the included flip-mat, the squares are -- like the Star-Finder basic flip map -- a bit too large. Not a huge deal, as this map probably won't be mixed and matched with other maps/tiles, but seeing this continue to happen years down the road is unfortunate.

The ugly: The D4 is numbered wrong? :P

Menace Under Otari - Solid!

5/5

This review is just for the adventure portion included in the box. Menace Under Otari, as a classic dungeon crawl, is XP-thick, and I like this, as a feature of this product; you get to level in the adventure, and fight the final fight as 2nd level. That's a win in my book for the players. Diplomacy-based PCs may feel less useful in this adventure, but luckily all PF2E classes have pretty good balance and are able to contribute. If playing with 4 players, I'd recommend rewarding each hero a hero point per hour of play, or at the very least every two hours. With so many die rolls, those will come in handy.

Without giving too much away, the adventure has a good mix of different difficulty-level combats, some terrain challenges, and a puzzle. All of this is great for teaching the game.

If you plan to orient players to Otari and its locations and NPCs (say as a non-Pathfinder Society adventure, or to start the beginning of a campaign), I would definitely allow 5 hours for each session, so 10 hours for both parts. I GM'ed it in one go, and in retrospect, would've broken it into two sessions. If running it in one go 10 hours would allow you to take some breaks throughout, if just to break up the slog through the dungeon.

If running this online, I'd insist player come early for characters and training, unless they are good at figuring out VTTs, and experienced PF2E players. One other thing. Ask players to have their 2nd level choices decided before game time, as the game assumes that you will level before the end fight.

Overall, I'd love to play this particular adventure, because I like dungeon crawls, the tactical challenge they present, and this is, imho, a great beginner adventure. That said, the sanctioning document is very liberal with interpretation on how to run it, think "campaign mode", so I allowed any class/ancestry combos, but not rare backgrounds. Also, I had 5 players, only scaled up a few fights. 4 players may take a bit shorter than 10 hours.

Enjoy this fine product!

Same here. I emailed customer support for roll20 last week, but haven't heard back. If I get an answer from them before something pops up here, I'll let you know.

Inquiry received. Answer unknown at this time. Will research and reply. (This is my robot golem voice. haha)

Not sure how long these things take. Purchased the boxed set on Roll20 last Friday. I'm waiting for an update. Got a game to run in a couple of days. Would be great to have the PDFs before then. Not easy reading the books on Roll20. Easier to read and digest on a PDF. Fingers are crossed.

Hey, all. Not trying to flame anyone as I love Paizo, but I've sent two emails to customer service, one on 11/11 and one on 11/18, neither of which has been responded to. I'm just wondering if email is the right way to reach out or if I sent to the wrong address which is possible. I'm sending to customer.service@paizo.com.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Tips for getting action from Customer Service during the pandemic deluge

Do NOT Bump Anyone Else's Thread!!

1. Create a new thread in the Customer Service Forum
Customer Service forum

2. Put your problem in the Subject line so it's easy to quickly see what kind of help you need.

3. Refrain from bumping your thread.
CS staff work through the forum posts from oldest to newest. If you bump your thread, you put yourself at the back of the line.

4. REFRAIN FROM BUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S THREAD.
It's extremely rude to push someone else to the back of the line.

Right now they are working on posts from Nov 5. They'll get to you when it's your turn.

The backlog isn't on customer service. It's on a Paizos' multi-year pattern -- legacy, even -- of under investment and/or incompetence with respect to technology. The problem has simply been exacerbated by the pandemic.

And while I understand that Paizo "isn't a technology company," having barely usable webpage 10+ years on is simply inexcusable. Worse, I see no hope of it ever being fixed, at least not under current leadership. Yes, this is a rant. But it's a manifestly accurate one. :)

Well that was a measured and restrained reply under the circumstances. I apologize for the lack of tact on my part. As someone who has been around since (nearly) the beginning, it has simply been...frustrating to see some of these issues linger year after year. Given that the ruleset in this Beginner Box, unlike the PF1 box, uses the same ruleset as the CRB, it seems like any 1st level scenario would work well with it. As for additional classes, same deal. Maybe they'll come up with a generic "this is how to deal with a class or a monster for BB purposes" thing.

One of the things that always bugged me about the first edition BB is that I could not find a way to build Black Fang within the standard rule set. Even the "weaker" (whatever it's called) template didn't help. OTOH, I suppose Black Fang could be considered an example of "the GM can build whatever kind of monster he wants; there are no hard and fast rules".

Yes. We have already announced Pathfinder Adventure: Troubles in Otari (December), which starts at 4th level for Beginner Box and Core Rulebook characters alike, extra Pathfinder Beginner Box Dice (December), and The Road from Otari (January), a Bounty adventure in which the story builds on Menace Under Otari, leading your first-level characters from Otari to Absalom, where you arrive at the Grand Lodge to begin your career in the Pathfinder Society.

Pathfinder Adventure: The Slithering (available now) starts at 4th level and Beginner Box characters/players could use it to transition to the full Core Rulebook. (You might need a hand-wave for a human character.)

The Abomination Vault Adventure Path takes place in the same location, starts at first level and uses the full Core Rulebook rules for players who want to make fresh characters.

However, none of the items you suggested are planned. It is intended as an introduction to Pathfinder, not a new product line with ongoing support.

Paizo Advantage allows qualified subscribers to save 15%. We have a holiday sale coming too. Otherwise, for non-subscribers, print and PDF purchases are separate transactions that do not create a discount.

Katina can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Roll20 does not know if a customer is eligible for Paizo Advantage, so subscribers should buy PDFs on paizo.com first to get the discount.

Roll20 tracks your paizo.com PDF ownership and gives you a discount on their store so that you are not paining for the PDF twice. It does not sync with your print purchases.

To be clear: Roll20 reduces the price by the MSRP, not by what you paid for the pdf. If you are an Advantage subscriber and received a $10.00 PDF for $8.50, Roll20 likely will still reduce the Roll20 price by $10.00.

I bought the PDF version of the Beginner's Box and, while it is an excellent product overall, I find it a bit disappointing that the electronic versions of the battlemaps (in the flip-mat file) are so poorly cut, which makes them hard to use on a VTT.

Setting up a battlemap as a background image on a VTT is much easier if the battlemap contains a round number of 5ft x 5ft squares and when its borders coincide with edges on the 5ft x 5ft square grid. The two battlemaps that are included in the PDF version of the flip-mats are cropped mid-square, which has two very unfortunate consequences: (a) it's harder to align the image on a VTT and (b) the cropping removes parts of some rooms (e.g., the northern alcove in Room 11 is truncated, and so are the two northern alcoves of Room 5, as well as the staircase on the 2nd battlemap and two of the circular alcoves in Room 14).

Would it be possible to upload an updated version of the flip-mat files with battlemaps that cover exactly 24 × 30 squares and do not truncate rooms?

Tech staff are working on a big site update. We even saw some 'not-ready-for-the-public' pages show up last week, and then be rolled back. I'm hoping that it's part of their 'tracking-ticket' solution to the Customer Service backlog.

I don't expect any new forums until that new software is running well.

Aaron They reduced the price of the Roll20 Beginner Box, but they only reduced it by $11.99.

Shouldn't it be reduced by $14.99?

Edit: Been notified there are multiple examples of Roll20 products not be discounted by the PDF price. So not sure how they figure out what the discount will be.

Thanks for the feedback. Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds both offer the Pathfinder Beginner Box on their sites. I'll share this with our VTT team.

Thank you for taking my comment into consideration ! :)

I don't really intend to use Roll20 or FG though: I have switched to Foundry and I'm not looking back ;)

Bad news: I grabbed the box at the FLGS, and the physical map has the same issue -- the squares are slightly larger than an inch, leader to the outer squares all being truncated.

Hopefully it can still be fixed in the PDF version. :)

Hello,

I preordered this on Amazon months ago, and received it last week. We are a group of BRAND NEW players, and there is an extremely high chance that more than one of us will mess up our ONLY SET of pregen character sheets.

Are the four pregen character sheets that come in the beginner box available for download anywhere so I can print extras?? I would also like to invite some other friends to try it as well, but all four of the character sheets are already being used.

I would really hate to think that I am going to have to take them to a Kinkos to have photocopies made.

Thanks!

The pregen character sheets are available in digital form when you buy the digital version of the Beginner Box. Scroll up to the top of this page and click "Add PDF".

If you just need blank character sheets, they're available on the Beginner Box page

From the top menu:
Pathfinder> Beginner Box.
Scroll down to find the link to the downloads.

Or just click this link
Blank Beginner Box Character sheet

If you need the pregen sheets, you might find it easier to print a blank sheet and fill it in by hand using the pregen values.
