Useful in Isolation but Hard to Reference, Store

5/5

Useful in isolation and the highest production values. These are much better than the equivalents for 5e. However, there are some serious flaws for use as a Referee (who grabs and stores these cards often):

1) The box. The cards lay flat in two columns. There's no possibility to add dividers for the 300-400 cards. The box is hella sturdy, so they could've been stacked on their edge: sideways or vertically -- like magic. This would allow you to add dividers for storage and referencing the numbering, which leads me to...

2) The numbering. This should be great. However, these numbers aren't in the Bestiary. They're arbitrary to this card deck and, thankfully, matched in the cardboard minis. Which makes it great to store if it weren't for #1. I wish the monsters had canonical numbering in the bestiary so everything was clearly organized and laid out but...

3) The layout. Some monsters are split across three cards. Due to layout. They couldn't easily used a landscape orientation, two-column layout for the statblocks, a trick the books use to eliminate empty space. They have two magic cards worth of space but use one at best. Most GMs will flash this to the players then use them as reference, letting the matching cardboard or plastic miniatures take over representation. There's no indication of which bestiary it's from, so if you spill multiple sets, it'll be hard to organize them again. There's a 1-400 in each set.

Production values are great. Totally support the amazing workers. Just needed a little more practical experience and use by Referee to understand what would be useful as a reference.

UPDATE: Hey folks, I'm still trying to resolve the error with the files for the download, so I've made it temporarily unavailable. I'll be sure to ping this thread again once the issues are resolved, and the folks who have already downloaded the product should receive an email notification when the new versions are available. Thanks for your understanding!

Personally, I would have found Page number much more useful to have on the card than an arbitrary card number. Easy Cross referencing is Important. But too late. Houses are already out of the barn.
I have always felt that way about the pawns also. Just my 2 cents. Otherwise looks like a great product. Can’t wait to get mine.

Thanks Katina.

Alrighty, the files should be back up and available for purchase! If you already have them, you should be able to hit the "Refresh Downloads" button at the top of your Digital Assets page and redownload them. I'm also about to send out the email to notify those who have the files already.

I will note, one of my coworkers was looking at the new files in Preview and said they still saw some graininess, but they looked fine for me on Microsoft Edge. There may still be some variations depending on how you're viewing them. I believe these files were re-exported to fix the resolution, I don't believe that the Gnoll art has been changed. If there are any other major concerns, just let me know and I'll see what we can do. Thanks again for your patience and understanding, and I hope everybody has a wonderful weekend!

Ok, I am not seeing any difference Katina.

I refreshed my downloads, even logged off and logged on. And I am seeing exactly what I saw before in the quality no matter what I use to look at them

Pixelation issues still seem to be there...I looked at #21 and #40 in MS Edge, MS Photos and GIMP. As well, refreshed and re-downloaded twice.

Did you try clicking "Problems downloading this file? Click here." to reset the personalization? I'm currently looking through them, but the gorilla and barghest at least are both now perfect.

[EDIT] I confirm, all well on my side.

Tried that, still no change. Will try again tomorrow.

Uh... Weird... I'd say to clear the cache, but with a 717mb fils that's clearly not kept in cache locally. :X

I'm now very curious.

I tried again...different browser this time and still get those pixelated images.

Is there a list of the cards that I can copy? I want to try and automatically rename them to something more useful than the card number.

I just did one right now. With card numbers, and page numbers. If two monsters are on one card though, I split it in two rows. But making a copy and fusing them back together would be easier than making a whole new list from nothing. :P

If you don’t mind me asking, could you share what you did today to refresh your downloads?

Got it sorted today. I believe the issue I was having was related to my cookies and/or cache. I used a different browser and purged these prior to logging in.

It looks like The Bestiary 2 Battle Cards and NPC Deck came with both JPG and PDF options, but the Bestiary 1 Battle Cards download only has JPG. Is there any way we could get the PDF with our downloads? I would like to have a quick reference that isn't individual jpgs (not to mention much smaller to store on my device).

Many thanks!

Any news on this?

I would love it as a source of images to make tokens from for VTTs

Not at the moment. I wish that a PDF would be added within the digital files.

However, under Pathfinder -> Compatibility you can find a licensed German distributor. They have a PDF copy of the Bestiary 1 Battle Cards. The monster names and statblocks are in German but if all you are after are the images like me then that is what I ended up using. This way I could extract the images from the background and have high quality images with transparent backgrounds to use within VTT and/or make my own tokens.

I'll throw in my hat with the request to add a .pdf version of the fronts and the backs in the download...I have the physical copies but I like to print off a copy to keep with the adventure, so my physical copies don't get lost. The pdfs on Bestiary 2 and 3 give out nice full page print outs, but the individual downloads either forces me to print it at 4x6 in the middle of the page with a lot of white space, or chop off the top and bottom a bit when printing it as 'fit to page'.

I realize that there are probably solutions which can be implemented, but it is so convenient to just hit print without having to go through other steps.

Horizon Hunters

The production is outstanding and works as intended. Games run smoother. However, as a reference, to dig through this falls flat (pun intended) as in the cards lay flat in the box. That's not great for digging through to find monster 204.

Packaging on edge sideways or vertical orientation -- like how card games are stored in hobby shops -- would allow for dividers, albeit with some empty space. Kind of wish the stat blocks were in two-column, landscape format. Once the players see the high quality art, these usually tuck away for the GM to reference the back side. Might as well use the trick the rulebooks use to reduce empty space, right?

So, all the other Bestiary Battle cards come with PDFs, but this one doesn’t. Would it be possible that they be added? JPGs take up way more space on my tablet!

Just adding my voice to the chorus of those wishing a PDF version of this product was available. I've had it in hard copy for a while and just purchased the digital, was disappointed to see it was JPG only. A PDF I could scroll through would be so much more useful than 926 individual files that are not named in a user friendly fashion.

Good news!
The digital downloads were updated today for this product, and now a PDF version is available!
Kudos to Paizo for following through on this!

I see that the downloads for this product were updated again this week. Does anyone know what changed? I've just downloaded the PDF but haven't had a chance to review.

I tried to download the updated JPGs too, but they don't seem to be personalizing, not sure if it is just a me thing?

Been a while since I downloaded any of the JPG only format, but I think that they took a VERY long time to personalize, like almost half an hour? But it's vague memories.

I also cannot get the JPGs to download, or even start to personalize like the other files. It did change the "last downloaded date" to "today" but then nothing happened. Tried this twice a week apart after the above poster said check back in 30 minutes or whatever, but both times I checked back every 30 minutes for a while and nothing ever happened. The pdf version of the bestiary1 cards downloads fine, but I like to organize the jpg files as if they were printed cards.

I sent an email to customer service detailing the whole issue, I'll come back and post what they say when they respond.
