Excellent Value for Many Games

5/5

If you're not familiar with the concept, Paizo's line of pawns for Pathfinder are thick cardboard two-dimensional tokens, with full-colour artwork of a creature printed on both sides. The pawns slot into a base that takes up the same amount of space on a 5' grid as the creature should, so a large-sized creature's token is larger and slots into a large-sized base. The reason this line is so popular is that pawns are an affordable way to amass a practical but handsome-looking collection of monster and NPC tokens. They're easy to use, easy to store, and won't cost the thousands of dollars it would take to amass an equivalent size collection of plastic or metal miniatures.

The Pathfinder Pawns: Monster Codex Box is based on the enormously popular hardcover Monster Codex. In that book, twenty classic races from the Pathfinder RPG were fleshed out and stats were provided for a wide variety of examples of that race: the Core Bestiary has ogres, but the Monster Codex has Ogre Bosses, Ogre Priestesses, Ogre Kings, etc. Accordingly, the pawn set for the book has at least one pawn for every one of those two hundred+ variations, along with multiple tokens for some of the more common ones. To take just one example, the "Gnolls" category is represented by four regular gnoll tokens, three "gnoll bruisers", three hyenas, and then single tokens for 9 other types of gnolls. Each pawn in the set is labelled and numbered for easy sorting, and the back of the box has an index to make things easier. The box includes 20 medium bases and 5 large bases.

If nothing else, the collection is a nice supplement to the pawns presented in the Bestiary pawn collections--it's always helpful to have more tokens of common monsters for larger encounters. But the real value of this particular pawn box is when a GM has a major story arc (or even campaign) that focuses on a particular race of monsters. You don't need ten different variations of an orc if it's just a random wilderness encounter, but if you have PCs invading an orc stronghold, being able to differentiate between "common" orcs, "Orc Sergeants", "Orc Witch Doctors", and the "Orc Warlord" adds a lot to the battlemap. I got this box because I'm running the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, and I've been able to make great use of the varieties of Ghouls, Goblins, and Ogres included in the box.

My recommendation would be to scan the list of monster races covered by the Monster Codex, and if you think any of them will have a serious presence in your game, go ahead and pick up this box. The artwork is gorgeous, the variety is excellent, and it's something you can use for any fantasy RPG even if you change games or editions.

Hey Game Masters! Build Your Monster Armies With This Box!!!

5/5

The Monster Codex Pawn Box is the perfect set with which to build your monster armies. Get the basics with the first Bestiary Box and then stat it up and pimp out your enemies with this amazing set of monster pawns. You get everything listed in the set description and more as you will strike fear into your players as you load up trays with a never ending flood of villainy!

Better than the Bestiary Box

5/5

As I've mentioned in other reviews, I have always loved the idea behind the Pathfinder Pawns, but even with a Bestiary Boxes 1 and 2 and a few Adventure Path pawn sets, I didn't really use them that often. Most of the time I stuck to my old minis, for two main reasons:
1) There were hardly any of a lot of the common monsters like kobolds, hobgoblins, and bugbears.
2) There wasn't a great variety of potential PC's.

This box solves problem 1! This is a great set and is absolutely necessary to own. If you only buy one Pawns boxed set, let it be this one. Such a huge variety of the common monster races. I can finally use kobolds in my game! And bugbears and Hobgoblins. It also has some great orcs.

The art is, on average, also larger and easier to see than previous sets. Great job, Paizo.

If you are new to Pathfinder Pawns and don't know where to start, here's what I recommend:

1) Monster Codex
2) NPC Codex
3) Summon Monster
4) Bestiary Box 1

These four will give you a solid base of almost everything you need. Everything else you get after that will add variety and zest to your pawn collection.

Paizo surprised me. Some amazing outside sources.

5/5

Received the PDF today. The hardcopy is in transit.

First, for those of you wondering if there is new artwork, the answer to that is yes. I'll get to that in a moment. If you're familiar with the Monster Codex book, you'll be happy to know that ALL of the artwork from the book is included.

Now for the new art (which was the part that surprised me), Paizo included some additional characters in this book from previous books.

* The boggard swampseer - art from one of the previous APs.
* Ghoul - artwork not included in the book. It looks familiar and possibly from an AP.
* Gnoll packlord - this art is from the advanced race guide (I'm pretty sure). Note to Paizo - MORE artwork from the advanced race guide for future pawn sets would be great!
* Hobgoblin - this particular artwork is from the Jade Regent Adventure Path. I'm certain of it.
*Hobgoblin Battlefield zealot - this artwork is from a standard Paizo image I've seen before. Very cool image.
* Orc Lieutenant - I've never seen this one before, but it's probably one of the neatest images in this collection.
* Orc war drummer - image looks like it's from one of the APs.
* Degenerate Serpantfolk - this image is from the Serpent's Skull AP. Very cool image.
* Troglodyte priest -this is the troglodyte image from the Legacy of Fire.
* Troll Warden - this is the cover image for the troll on one of the Reign of Winter Aventure Path books.

***** Special note to Paizo ***** keep including artwork from former APs in your future pawn collections. Also, I'd highly recommend that you include the artwork from Chronicles of the Righteous, the servitors from Inner Sea gods, and the remaining art from Advanced Race Guide. You did a great job with this current collection incorporating old artwork that hadn't been used on pawns. Please keep doing it!

Just as an update from my side: Thalia.de doesn't deliver the box anymore.

Sadly.

I am a bit sad though, this would have been my first box of at least a couple I would buy, but seeing as there is no real alternative to gathering a lot of the same I am probably going to explore different solutions than this. meh..

Today Amazon has a seller offering a copy of this for $50,000.

I have an un-opened Monster Codex Box I am willing to sell for $45,000. Free shipping ;) Any takers?

When you see listings like that it's worth remembering that because something is listed on a site for a certain amount does not mean that it is selling for that amount, or even that anyone is buying it. Many sites do not charge listing fees so sellers can list an item at whatever dollar amount they want and hope that someone bites. If the listing expires they are out nothing, and can just relist it.

In my years of collecting action figures I have seen the same listings from the same sellers with very large price tags for years at a time. It costs them nothing to list it and maybe one day someone who either doesn't know better, has the money and doesn't mind the price, or is desperate for the item will buy it for that ridiculous price.

Yea, I get it. I do not really believe that anyone is interested in paying that amount for this product and I see no evidence of anyone having paid that amount for it or even similar items.

I just thought it comical that it was listed for so much and wanted to draw attention to it. It was outrageous when it was listed for $600 a few weeks ago.

I'm sure this has more to do with the sellers' algorithms that each increase their prices over the other's until it reaches their predetermined limit of $50,000. - However, I have no qualms in also offering the product for a similarly ridiculous price.

.
.
.

BTW, for anyone interested in my copy, the $45,000 includes a $5,000 (10%) off which is my Rainy Day discount that is only good until the end of March. After which it will go back up to $50,000. So act now! And remember, it's free shipping! The seller on Amazon is charging $3.00 for shipping. I won't gouge you on the shipping. It's free.

^ Steve, I was imagining something along the lines of an in-house Kickstarter by Paizo, where those interested in purchasing a reprint of this would literally put their money where their mouths were. If enough people signed up to order it, even allowing for some last-minute cancellations, then Paizo would know if it were indeed financially viable.

If you'll pardon the pun, I just think that sometimes one has to think outside the box...

The trouble is always one of print run size. In order to sell them at $24-99, they need to print (say) 10,000 copies. If everyone who has posted in this thread represents 10 people who would buy a copy, that’s like probably 1000 copies. If Paizo were to only print to meet demand, the price per unit would be exorbitant. Not many would back a kickstarter if the price per box was $150 or something. The trouble from paizo’s Perspective (as I understand it) is how long it would take to sell through the tail that would result from overprinting sufficiently in order to keep retail prices sensible.

(Obviously those numbers are fictitious, but hopefully the point is clear. I’ve looked at printing 32 page Player Companions and the per/unit price differences in ordering 4, 100, 1000 and 5000 are incredible - from memory it was something like $80 - $40 - $4 - $1.80 or something for those pagecounts).

Don’t get me wrong - I’m not trying to stop people saying what they want. I just think it’s useful to understand the issue. I think the likely solution is going to be a Monster Codex Two (or similar) - a product with new pawns filling a similar niche. That way, Paizo will get sales through retail and subscribers as well as from people looking for useful “army building” pawn bases.

It’s not going to be perfect, but Vic and co have looked into it deeply. I’m sure they’ll reprint one if it becomes feasible. It would be a mistake to put their reticence down to disinterest or obliviousness.

Super long term, I’m hopeful that Paizo will eventually find a Print-on-demand service that meets their quality and reliability standards at a reasonable pricepoint. I know they’ve been looking into that (on and off) for years. If that were to eventuate, the whole “out of print” issue would disappear.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have the total quantity of pawns in this box and the quantities of each size category?

After having tried every online game store I could find in Europe (30+), I'm willing to accept that I won't be able to find a copy of this. :(

Couldn't find this anywhere online all sold out, looking to buy a copy any update on reprint?

The latest news is that there will be no reprint as it's financially unviable.

If you guys really want them to reprint it your best bet to convince them it's financially viable is to start a social media campaign.

It worked for Family Guy!

I've been digging through un-translated Taiwan websites in a desperate search to find this product. Even called the ten closes stores to me and they've all sold out! Major, major bummer.

What about Kickstarter campaign?

A friend gave me the PDF version printed on Cardstock for Christmas.
I glued them onto that thicker cardboard someone posted earlier, but cutting them out was a pain and made really bad edges that wouldn't easily pop back in. And storage in a binder is pretty important for me.

I feel really bad for you guys--honest. As a collector (of a lot of different things), I know how frustrating it is when something just can't be found anywhere. I'm now paranoid that other Paizo products on my "buy someday" list will meet the same fate.

Anyway, I just wanted to chime in with the suggestion to place some automated "wishlist" alerts on e-bay, etc. With the new edition, there will inevitably be some disgruntled people who do a mass sell-off of everything they own from first edition; some copies of the box might turn up on the secondary market over the next year and a half.

As the time of writing this message, there are two copies of the Monster Codex Box on eBay. Look like they were returned to the distributor. These are the only copies I've seen on eBay since I started looking for a copy months ago.

It also seems some guy from Germany is selling the individual pawns on ebay for like 2 euro each :/

I just managed to nab one from Amazon at $109.
There seems to be two left for $210. Jump on it!

French version on ebay

Hi All,

Returned to playing with my sons and ran into the unavailability of the Monster Codex Box soon after.

Poked around and started seeing it pop up at under $40US on Amazon.fr (France's Amazon) as "New" and "shipped and sold by Amazon" with an expected pre-order release date (Thank you Google Translate!).

This would pass, go out of stock, and then it would post a new release date to pre-order. With Amazon's guarantee the next time it came up I jumped. Ordered on May 24th, it arrived today.

It came in its original cellophane as-is and the box was a bit beat up and smells a bit musty (sitting on a warehouse shelf somewhere I figure)so I figured at best it was used. Popped it open and it is indeed NEW, unpunched with unopened stands and all. Amazing. :)

Thought I would post here for those looking, you might want to keep and eye on Amazon.fr!

Hope this helps, they are definitely out there!

Hi all!

Any way to get this reprinted soon?

I need it

It won't be getting reprinted. There's one on ebay right now.

Here

Paizo, please reprint this! My planned Drow campaign depends on this! Also I’d love to have more than 4 goblin pawns.

so this is out of reprint, so now we need to pay the pdf 20 usd

Print the 30+ sheets in a good way 30+ usd, then make them in plastic cover 30+ usd, then the glue and bases... lets say 5 usd:

a 115+ usd damn you paizo, better to make a kickstarter or something to ask for reprint

Will this set be getting a reprint?

Just chiming in with everyone else here. I'd love to see a reprint for this item.

Dark Archive

I know it isn't a reprint, but in june there will be an Enemy Encounters pawn collection coming from Paizo, which contains some of the creatures in the Monster Codex Box.

Adam Daigle wrote:

"When I put together this set, my plan was to make it complimentary to the very popular and sold out Monster Codex Pawn Box. The first seven sheets of these pawns feature a group of like monstrous enemies, and the final sheet is some useful terrain tiles so that you can set up battles on a Flip-Mat. I hope folks like this collection."

"One of the sheets contains two different groups due to size and the die. There are a few accompanying critters, but it's mainly humanoid foes. The set includes many of the same creatures in Monster Codex: duergar, troglodytes, orcs, gnolls, kobolds, ogres, mixed goblinoids, and then a sheet of undead."

"There's a mix of new art and art picked up from previous publications."

Um, I just got this set printed at a printer for about $50, including the cost of the PDF file. You can buy the PDF and have it printed on card stock for way less than what anyone's charging on ebay.

Just sayin'.

Hi, can I echo the call for the Monster Codex Pawns be reprinted please.

I purchased the pdf version to print out, glue to card stock, tape to existing pawns, etc.

I was planning to print as needed, right now my group is facing down an orc invasion, so I printed off the 4 pages that include orcs, only to find that many images had a black background when printed. This isn’t a huge deal, but ink ain’t cheap and I personally think the images look better against white... plus the red outlines denoting the pawn shape are not visible.

The black does not show up on the pdf, nor does it show on the print preview. Before I print anything else, has anyone else encountered this? Is there a solution?

Thanks!

Sounds more like an issue with your printer or your PDF software settings.

Also. One box has made it's way to ebay. There's one day left on the bid and it's going pretty high.
But I thought I would share.

$400 dollars is nowhere near enough to justify a whole new print run.

Well, if Trump slaps tariffs on toys from China even 400m USD might not cut it.

Seriously, people need to quit equating "a couple of people are willing to pay a crazy price on eBay" with "there is enough demand out there to justify a large enough print run to make the price reasonable (and the associated inventory storage costs, etc)". They are not related.

On the side of positive news, now that 2e is coming, there will possibly eventually be a 2e Monster Codex, which would mean a new Monster Codex Box.

I am not sure that there will be any, but if they will, the first product will be a Bestiary box with most creatures only getting one pawn.
The second one would be a "Age of Ashes" pawn set.

Seeing how D&D only offers pre-painted & unpainted miniatures through Wizkids, which sell VERY good, i am not sure if it wouldn't be smarter for Paizo to do the same.

September's/october's "Legendary Adventures" Pathfinder Battles set seems to have some fire/dragon-themed minis (Fire Giant, Chimera with red dragon head, Dragon Turtle).

Seeing as how they don't offer pawns that is precisely why it is a good reason for Paizo to continue making pawns.

They all sell out as well. Not to the extent of justifying a reprint, but they do sell out.

I just looked and only 2 of 14 pawn collections are sold out - the two oldest.

Also two out of ten boxes are sold out and two out of five special sets are gone.

Huh, shows me for not paying constant attention to which product people are always clamoring for a reprint for.

Seems there's another one up on eBay for those still looking

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For those interested, I started a thread about a year and a half ago about making your own pawns from the Monster Codex Pawns PDF. Monster Codex Pawns I was unable to find a physical copy so I did the next best thing. I think they turned out pretty well. Others in the thread had their own methods that would probably work equally well. Anyway, that's my 2 cents and I'll hush.

As far as I'm aware, the only sets that are currently unavailable are Rise of the Runelords, Skulls and Shackles, Monster Codex and Heroes & Villains (the only one I'm missing :( ). Bestiary 1 was sold out at one point and going for ridiculous prices, but they eventually did a reprint.

Since no alternative Pawn subscription was announced for 2E I just assumed they would continue the current one since the pawns should work regardless of the edition.

I've started a petition to encourage Paizo to reprint this useful and interesting title. Please sign in lieu of more nitpicking!
