Excellent Value for Many Games

*****

If you're not familiar with the concept, Paizo's line of pawns for Pathfinder are thick cardboard two-dimensional tokens, with full-colour artwork of a creature printed on both sides. The pawns slot into a base that takes up the same amount of space on a 5' grid as the creature should, so a large-sized creature's token is larger and slots into a large-sized base. The reason this line is so popular is that pawns are an affordable way to amass a practical but handsome-looking collection of monster and NPC tokens. They're easy to use, easy to store, and won't cost the thousands of dollars it would take to amass an equivalent size collection of plastic or metal miniatures.

The Pathfinder Pawns: Monster Codex Box is based on the enormously popular hardcover Monster Codex. In that book, twenty classic races from the Pathfinder RPG were fleshed out and stats were provided for a wide variety of examples of that race: the Core Bestiary has ogres, but the Monster Codex has Ogre Bosses, Ogre Priestesses, Ogre Kings, etc. Accordingly, the pawn set for the book has at least one pawn for every one of those two hundred+ variations, along with multiple tokens for some of the more common ones. To take just one example, the "Gnolls" category is represented by four regular gnoll tokens, three "gnoll bruisers", three hyenas, and then single tokens for 9 other types of gnolls. Each pawn in the set is labelled and numbered for easy sorting, and the back of the box has an index to make things easier. The box includes 20 medium bases and 5 large bases.

If nothing else, the collection is a nice supplement to the pawns presented in the Bestiary pawn collections--it's always helpful to have more tokens of common monsters for larger encounters. But the real value of this particular pawn box is when a GM has a major story arc (or even campaign) that focuses on a particular race of monsters. You don't need ten different variations of an orc if it's just a random wilderness encounter, but if you have PCs invading an orc stronghold, being able to differentiate between "common" orcs, "Orc Sergeants", "Orc Witch Doctors", and the "Orc Warlord" adds a lot to the battlemap. I got this box because I'm running the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, and I've been able to make great use of the varieties of Ghouls, Goblins, and Ogres included in the box.

My recommendation would be to scan the list of monster races covered by the Monster Codex, and if you think any of them will have a serious presence in your game, go ahead and pick up this box. The artwork is gorgeous, the variety is excellent, and it's something you can use for any fantasy RPG even if you change games or editions.

Better than the Bestiary Box

*****

As I've mentioned in other reviews, I have always loved the idea behind the Pathfinder Pawns, but even with a Bestiary Boxes 1 and 2 and a few Adventure Path pawn sets, I didn't really use them that often. Most of the time I stuck to my old minis, for two main reasons:
1) There were hardly any of a lot of the common monsters like kobolds, hobgoblins, and bugbears.
2) There wasn't a great variety of potential PC's.

This box solves problem 1! This is a great set and is absolutely necessary to own. If you only buy one Pawns boxed set, let it be this one. Such a huge variety of the common monster races. I can finally use kobolds in my game! And bugbears and Hobgoblins. It also has some great orcs.

The art is, on average, also larger and easier to see than previous sets. Great job, Paizo.

If you are new to Pathfinder Pawns and don't know where to start, here's what I recommend:

1) Monster Codex
2) NPC Codex
3) Summon Monster
4) Bestiary Box 1

These four will give you a solid base of almost everything you need. Everything else you get after that will add variety and zest to your pawn collection.

Paizo surprised me. Some amazing outside sources.

Received the PDF today. The hardcopy is in transit.

First, for those of you wondering if there is new artwork, the answer to that is yes. I'll get to that in a moment. If you're familiar with the Monster Codex book, you'll be happy to know that ALL of the artwork from the book is included.

Now for the new art (which was the part that surprised me), Paizo included some additional characters in this book from previous books.

* The boggard swampseer - art from one of the previous APs.
* Ghoul - artwork not included in the book. It looks familiar and possibly from an AP.
* Gnoll packlord - this art is from the advanced race guide (I'm pretty sure). Note to Paizo - MORE artwork from the advanced race guide for future pawn sets would be great!
* Hobgoblin - this particular artwork is from the Jade Regent Adventure Path. I'm certain of it.
*Hobgoblin Battlefield zealot - this artwork is from a standard Paizo image I've seen before. Very cool image.
* Orc Lieutenant - I've never seen this one before, but it's probably one of the neatest images in this collection.
* Orc war drummer - image looks like it's from one of the APs.
* Degenerate Serpantfolk - this image is from the Serpent's Skull AP. Very cool image.
* Troglodyte priest -this is the troglodyte image from the Legacy of Fire.
* Troll Warden - this is the cover image for the troll on one of the Reign of Winter Aventure Path books.

***** Special note to Paizo ***** keep including artwork from former APs in your future pawn collections. Also, I'd highly recommend that you include the artwork from Chronicles of the Righteous, the servitors from Inner Sea gods, and the remaining art from Advanced Race Guide. You did a great job with this current collection incorporating old artwork that hadn't been used on pawns. Please keep doing it!

looking foward to this

Absolutely I am as well. My Skull & Shackles game could always use more sahuagin and with these additional serpentfolk and the faction pawns just released in the Inner Sea Pawn Set, I'm as close all I'll ever get to having a Serpent's Skull pawn set.

I want this now...right now...before Saturday!

Should be good timing for my Runelords game.

Oh thank the GODS I have been wanting this to come out the second I picked up the book upon its release. Hands down the Pathfinder Pawns from Paizo have made miniature use affordable and FUN!

Can't wait to get this one!

A lot of great art in the Monster Codex Book to work with. Pathfinder Pawns are a great route to take if you're looking for quality minis on a budget. I'm hoping for a Dragon Booster or something of the like to be released, never enough unique dragons.

Ok ive been waiting long enough this. It needs to be released now :D

I want this earlier!!
Also, im still waiting for Carrion Crown Pawns :(

You're going to be waiting forever for Carrion Crown pawns since I've read that there are no plans at all to retroactively go back and release pawn sets for old APs that didn't get them when the were new.

that´s hard truth my friend...
Sad to hear that, hard to believe... and hurts as hell.
The only AP i was interested for to run and play as a pre made adventures (alongside Curse of the Crimson Throne) and they will never make pawns for them...

@Shaun

If you could post the link to the discussion where Paizo said that they were not planning on releasing older AP Pawn sets that would be greatly appreciated.

@Juda de Kerioth

I've been hoping that they'll make Pawn sets for the OOP adventure Paths as well. Kingmaker has been one I'd like to see personally.

Paizo Pawn Development Team:

Thanks for making these a huge help when I game face to face and the price point is great. I have most of the Big Box sets (save the Inner Sea). One suggestion, if you are not planning on going retroactively back to make Pawns for old APs

For your consideration...Would you make a Big Box for all the Old APs? Kind of Classic Adventure Path Pawn Set? An individual set for an one AP might that is OOP might not sell well, but a group of 4 (or so) collected might be just the right thing.

I always buy all of these.

One recommendation though, we need pawns for things like the servitors described in Inner Sea Gods and possibly other creatures that might have slipped through the bestiary net as well.

I would definitely be interested in buying an all-for-one release of collected older APs. Love the idea and would definitely purchase in a Big Box format.

Great idea TheMetal1 !

Love the big box sets. Too bad I've got more plastic stands than I'll ever need. Can't wait for this release!

Will it contain the various mounts as well as separate pawns?

Carrion Crown pawns would be awesome! Seeing as there are many I could use like the werewolves and vampires. I hope they consider making them.

Question to anyone who knows character art in the Pathfinder books.

A few years ago I had a pretty good stack of pathfinders books. I sold most of them, but my nephew is creating a lapith-type character and I'm for an image from one of the books (can't remember which one).

The image was that of a bald, yellowish centaur with antlers. It was not the image from the hoof and horn book, but was a different book.

Any help you guys and gals can provide would be extremely helpful. I'm going to buy the pdf when I find out which one it is and make a homemade pawn for my nephew.

^

False alarm. I found what I was looking for. An Agathion Cervinal from the Chronicles of the Righteous book.

Speaking of which, you guys (development team at Pathfinder) need to give this a dude a pawn at some point. :)

I agree. Paizo could put together a big box with some former APs that were never made into pawns - carrion crown, jade regent, second darkness, and legacy of fire would be a great foursome to make into one gigantic pawn box.

Paizo is sitting in a really good position given they have tons of artwork that has as of yet not been turned into pawns. I'd love for them to go back through some of the former APs and supplemental books to scope out potential pawns. There's plenty of great concepts out there.

Is the art the same as the monster codex or are there some new pieces?

Scarab Sages

I am really excited about this pawn collection! I can't wait to have an army of kobolds and gnolls to use. I would also love a Carrion Crown pawn set or a "classic ap collection box". As much as I love buying minis, it's way too expensive for me to get into seriously, so the pawns are fantastic replacements.

ahhh finaly i love the artwork in this book, and this was the best idea ever (pawns) now i made my owns and still buy like a pawn-o-holic all of this boxes from you guys :3

Big box with old ap´s would be great and i promise you that will sell as coca cola in a 40° suny day

no lone Gorthek?

This is perfect! Finally pawns for horde style monsters where you need multiples. Also the selection of monsters is perfect for most games. I may even buy a second box!

Also as I am running Serpent's skull, I finally have snake people figures.

Liberty's Edge

Can anyone tell me exactly how think the actual pawns are please?

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Shoot! That was supposed to be 'thick' not 'think'! Ah, typing on an iPhone!

For those that have pawns, can you tell me exactly how THICK they are please? As accurate as possible would be great!

Thanks

I didn't pull out my ruler, but I would say about one millimeter?

They're the same thickness as all the other pawns: 1/16"

source

Just picked these up...sadly there were a few weeks late for the assault on Fort Rannick. Oh well.

Interestingly, mine came with two huge bases, despite the back of the box mentioning only large and medium bases. Anyone else get huge bases?

Please answer me something, and please understand I'm not trolling but honestly asking.

Am I missing something here? Based on what i can see here they are charging $40.00 for a box of "cardboard cutouts" and some plastic bases to stick them in. and then its $25.00 for a PDF of the same images.

I'm sorry i just don't get it. Maybe it's because I grew up with metal minis. but I don't see anything here to justify that price tag. So please if i am missing something here please let me know.

I'll answer this as someone who has been trying to find a way into miniatures over the past 1-2 years.

I bought some Reaper metal minis. After a dozen of them ran me a tab of nearly a hundred bucks, I decided that there was no way I was ever going to be able to assemble enough minis to be able to field a wide variety of encounters.

I then turned to Pawns. For about the same investment that, in metal minis, got me a dozen figures or so, I was able to get the entire Bestiary 1, plus four Adventure Paths worth of pawns, literally hundreds, and I imagine I will be able to field almost any encounter with that investment.

Mathematically, I can get about 30-40 Pawns for the price of one metal miniature. Other advantages are that Pawns are MUCH easier to store (a huge advantage in a home that has gotten way too cluttered as it is), and they don't need to be painted (the metal minis are uglier because I don't have the time, the equipment, or the energy to paint them).

Hope that clarifies why I personally chose to go with Pawns.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

You may not be getting the scale here. The box contains 16 die-cut sheets of heavy cardboard, printed in full color on both sides, plus 20 1-inch bases, 5 2-inch bases, and 2 3-inch bases. And while there are are 212 different monsters represented, there are multiples of many, so there are over 400 tokens here. It weighs in at almost four and a half pounds.

Got these today. Very nice but one sheet was printed upside down! (the one with all the Duergar).

I'll push it back amazon.co.uk, but I just thought I would let you know.

If amazon won't help you, post a thread in the Customer Service section of the boards here. Such misprints happen from time to time, and are quickly corrected from the Paizo team.

I've noticed that all of the online retail stores (that I've checked) appear to be out of stock simultaneously. I'm curious: Is this a temporary situation due to holiday sales, or is the print run in danger of selling out?

So almost every store i have seen is out of stock for this box, will there be more print-versions made or is this pdf-only now?

Morteus wrote:

I second this question!

Please tell me you will consider reprinting this item. There is still a high demand for such a well liked pawns box. The proof should be in the fact that people that have unopened ones are asking over $1000 for it.

Please Paizo, reprint.

Thank you.

I will second the request for a reprint. A product like this is an amazing tool. Everyone's always running out of orcs, gnolls, goblins, and the like, and buying single miniatures is prohibitively expensive and take up too much space. Reprinting this would be easy money for Paizo.

Vic my good sir, any news on this coming back into stock?

I say this not to beat a dead horse, but to help the decision-makers at Paizo gauge interest:

PLEASE reprint the pawn collection for the Monster Codex (one of the best sourcebooks ever, IMO).

Everyone who wants a set of the pawns and doesn't have one should post. After a few hundred or a thousand, they'll realize how good an investment or their resources it would be.
