Fantastic Quality

5/5

This book is well worth the price. The quality is amazing, the prints are beautiful (actually going to frame them and hang them) and the individual handouts are extremely helpful.

There is literally only 1 tiny thing that I was thrown off-guard about with this book and that is with the locking hinge with the grimoire case. There is a single piton about a centimeter long that is holding the hinge in place and if you hold the case upside down it falls into the metal casing in a way that it allows for the hinge to be removed, and if the hinge is removed and you turn the case right-side up the piton will fall out. Easy remedy, keep the book right-side up or flat on its back to let gravity do its work to keep the hinge in place.

So that is the only concern I had and wanted to put that out there for anyone who wants to purchase this fine piece of awesomeness so they are not caught off-guard as well.

Amazing Book!

I love this thing. I've had it for a while now and the only complaint I have is the star on the cover. The seven pointed star emblem on the cover of the case (not on the book inside) arrived partially scratched off and over time (maybe a few months) it has gathered a couple more scratches so I'm kind of bummed by it's lack of perfection. Everything else is wonderful!

The most awesome ..

5/5

Just got the deluxe edition as a pre-birthday gift from my players, and I have to say: It's the most awesome and unique roleplaying item I've ever had. Needless to say, I'll be using it for many forthcoming sessions, know all I need is a new haircut and color, some diamonds in my forehead and on my hands and loose a few pounds ... ;-)

If paizo ever considers doing other adventure paths in a deluxe edition/reprint (please consider it? plz) - I would suggest to stock some more AP related stuff into the box, like the Sandpoints Pawns, GameFlip mat, a printed version of the Players Guide (to the AP) etc.

Unbelievable

5/5

When he drops it on the table video, it didnt seem that heavy to me. when i went to lift it out of the box, i almost dropped it before i got a second hand in there!

This is a serious amount of metal, and that leather is SO SMOOTH to the touch. this is not a book make to look like a leather and metal bound tome, this IS a leather and metal bound tome!

the artwork in envelopes are also vastly better quality than what the video presents. the stock they are on cant be called paper, not sure what the industry term is for it. it is extremely thick and durable and the colors just shine off it.

Words cant describe... should have sent a poet...

beautiful!

5/5

There's not much I can add in a review that hasn't already been said by the others, except that it looks far better in person than it does in the pictures and videos.

My only possible complaint might be that the simulated edges of "pages" on the presentation box seem a bit too white, and might have used a very light stain to a colour more like aged parchment, but that's only a very, very minor nit-pick, and the case still looks great without it.

The hardware seems to be steel, and it's fastened to the cover with screws, making the construction quite sturdy. The clasp is a perfect fit - neither too loose, nor too snug.

The apparently fake leather of the box and book looks and feels quite real, and it's very soft and comfortable to the touch. This may be the nicest cover material of any book in my small collection. The spine of the box and book are textured as if the contents were bound with a heavy cord under the leather (though I don't think that's actually the case, rather just a simulation.)

The inside of the box cover seems to be a very heavy, high-quality paper, and the box itself is lined with a nice, black cloth, with a dark red ribbon which makes lifting the contents out of the box easier. The inside dimensions of the box are just right for holding your typical RPG book, or the Pathfinder DM screen and one or more Flip Maps, for example. (As others noted, if it's not holding the special edition RotRl book, it would make a fine box to store a DM's screen, dice, paper, and other such materials in.)

The book is printed in vivid colour in high-quality detail on heavy paper. This is the first time I've seen a Pathfinder adventure path of any sort, but I would have to imagine this is much higher quality printing than the original. The artwork is quite beautiful, meeting or exceeding Paizo's usual standards, the text is crisp and easy to read, and everything seems quite well-organized and easy to follow. The adventure is quite detailed (there is, perhaps, almost too much detail: the information provided is quite dense). The binding seems quite secure and well-done - this book seems to be designed for the long-haul (I can't really say the same for any of my other game books.)

The detachable hand-outs are quite a nice touch, though perhaps not really practical for real-life gaming, as I would imagine it could be quite easy to abuse the book by removing and replacing the handouts until things get dog-eared and distressed. Indeed, I would have to say that the book is best used for display as a collector-item only, rather than used on a real-world game table.

The high-quality art prints are another nice touch and could also be used as hand-outs or visual aids, though these seem more like bonus material than an integral part of the adventure path. Each print is protected in its own high-quality translucent paper (not plastic) envelope for protection, and yes the prints do seem to be nice enough to frame if you are so inclined.

I've shelved the book on my bookshelf next to the special edition of The Other Guys' fake-leather-bound special-edition 3.5E core rulebooks; the fit right in with each other, though I'd say that Paizo's product is much nicer than the Other Guys' special edition books.

The whole package seems to me to be worth the price, and I'm sure it will hold its value quite well for the future. Paizo have gone above and beyond on this product, and they've earned 5/5 stars for it.

I'm torn. I have the original Rise of the Runelords AP books, but not the Anniversary edition (in any form). Had this come out two weeks ago, before I spent a significant amount on the Black Friday sale, I wouldn't have hesitated. However, I'm in the process of buying a house and having to commit today in order to get the PDF's is just too soon.

i was looking for a W. F. Shnider response, but i cant get him (my goal is an errata for that book in pdf with the missing files)

now that u mention the correct place to put an issue, can you tel me where is it?

maybe a link or something

it will be nice, if jason or someone of the paizo´s answer at this point all those question

(and if theyre reading i want to say thanks for this awesome game, and im still waiting my errata for rule of fear, since you say that the kavapesta issue was removed for space, so, i guess kavapesta was created at all, with that mapping, and cultural, an haunts and all of that like Karkau does for example) so i think it cost you nothing upload that missing file

Kavapesta is probably the biggest editing mistake in Paizo's history.

All of the missing text is freely available on-line here.

That link is to F. Wesley Schneider's response to the problem.

I think you are mistaken if you believe that Kavapesta should have an entry in Chapter 4: Cities and Settlements. There is nothing to indicate that an article similar to that for Caliphas, Karcau or Lepidstadt was ever intended.

The Kavapesta mistake is that the entry in Chapter 3: Counties has been copied from page 10. It should have been the text F. Wesley Schneider posted in the product thread.

If you have a specific error with a Paizo product (like missing pages, blank pages, pages glued shut... common printing problems) then use the Customer Services Forum to ask for help. My experience is that the CS at Paizo is very helpful and prompt.

that 15 lines of text are not enough for fix a mistake, as a buyer, i deserve more than this... not just a two lines of text.

i espect at least some respect to us, i mean, if they commit that huge mistake, at least a pdf errata with all of the missing parts.

they announced that will be an increment in theyre products prices, theyre asking money for theyre game (which will be sold to us), theyre selling us this box with errors (handout 16), and probably a 100 pages glued and ruined... and still they offer us nothing for that price?

just a compilation of an old story in a nixe cover box... not enough to me

maybe if i buy it, can i change the pictures for all those things i mention before?

why theyre arent answer this?

They offer you a product, you buy it or you dont. What's to "answer"?

They're not going to 'swap' the prints in this product for a pdf "errata" for Rule of Fear (was that a serious question?). If you decide to buy it and get a book with the pages glued together I can all but guarantee they'll replace it for you. They explained why the prices are going up (for the first time in what...five years?). Things get more expensive over time, wages go up, they employ more people...Stuff costs more to make so stuff gets sold for more - it's how the world works.

Paizo are making hardly any profit on this specific product as is (if any) - it's not something they've done for the money, it's something they've done to celebrate where they've managed to come over the last five years. Some of us are joining in with that celebration (and gladly so) but there's no expectation that you have to.

If you think their stuff is too expensive, dont buy it. Personally I think it's too cheap.

I will repeat an earlier response to your constant complaining about Paizo's products:

"I would rate their Customer Service people as top notch. I would also rate their products as top notch. The bottom line in my opinion is if you don't like the product, don't buy it. But don't bad mouth it here on their forum expecting them to cater to your desires alone. They are in the business to make money and make the Role-Playing experience as much fun as possible."

Yes, I do see your posts as being nothing more than whining and complaining that Paizo won't answer your requests directly and won't exchange parts of a product for other items. If you don't like their product or their prices for their products, you do not have to buy them. I am fairly certain that your lack of support is not going to cause them to close shop. You tempt me to hide this particular thread. I wish there were a way to hide your posts.

Liberty's Edge

My two cents not really needed but getting thrown in...

While there have been some things I didn't want to see happen by Paizo like increasing the subscriptions of the Module line and Companion Line to a 12 month subscription because I was concerned about the error rate increasing, I still believe they are a great company.

The product they have put out has raised the quality of the ENTIRE RPG industry, I personally believe. Granted there have been some errors but that stuff will happen. Well they keep at trying not to make those mistakes? Yes I believe they will. (I just didn't want them to increase by throwing out more issues when they seemed they coulnd't keep up with what they were putting out, which is maybe the reason for the price increase on some of the items, but once again that is a personal opinion.)

If they deliver a broken or defective product they make good on it and always have. Heck I have even seen them make good on a product that was purchased at another location than their own store but think those are VERY rare occasions. I am not concerned if I receve a product that is defective that they wouldn't make good on it. I STRONGLY recommend anyone else that they shouldn't worry about that as well.

The price increases I noticed the other day and haven't seen any real dicussion on it either (don't frequent the forum as much as I use to) but I do believ, or want to belive they are using it to make there product better and not line there pockets. Perhaps by getting more editors to help with the work load, or different packaging material to help with delivery of products. While it sucks the prices are going up it was bound to happen. At least it is not a GREAT increase.

I am really looking froward to this Deluxe edition and glad my wife conviced me to go ahead and purchase it.

It should bring about 10lbs of fun (depending on what you put inside the case). Thankfully, it does not deliver a full ton of fun as that would be too great a strain on the back.

Fair warning, you might want to do some reps before trying to carry it around Karzoug-style. Hmmm . . . maybe a sling or Papoose for it to distribute the weight . . .

and to me, adding dice, maps and other existing elements would cause duplicates in my shelves, as I already have the dice, the maps, ...

their CustServ is really great, they have a dedicated forum and email, where you can get answers (while the answer might not be satisfying to you is another story).

here's the deluxe edition topic and I'm waiting for my expensive belgian delivery of this one :)

it would be expensive if it was a monthly product... but it's a one-time shot, and I like it (like a lot of other ppl)

Back on topic my copy arrived in the mail today and it's incredibly cool. The thing is rather amazingly heavy and looks great perched on top of my bookcase. My only regret is that I didn't have my AP sub going to get the free pdf, I'm scared of damaging the book itself!

I'm not bothered, more confused, to be frank.

They dont really want to discuss more general pricing issues here in the product pages, but I bet if you started a thread under Paizo publishing forum you'd get some decent feedback and/or explanation as to the philosophy/necessity behind pricing this (and not issuing what you term errata/etcetera).

I'd been considering picking up the regular anniversary RotRL book for a month or so... Despite this being over 5x the cost (Amazon, Free shipping) I mulled it over and made the purchase today after seeing it on the Paizo main page yesterday.

I just got the copy my wife bought me for Christmas. It is GORGEOUS. Also, if your players are giving you trouble, slay them with it, this sucker hearkens back to days of yore when the word tome was not used lightly.

Got mine today as well. Seemed to have a few dings on the case. I did notice I have a double of the Background Picture to Sins of the Saviors and I'm missing the Meresiel Picture.

Not a big enough deal for me to care (I don't particularly like Meresiel, and I loved that background of 5). However, I was curious if anyone else had this issue. Any slight damage to your case?

Got mine today too. HOLY SMURF this thing is huge!!! I feel the need to put it on a pedestal and heavily trap the room to keep it from adventures. An amazing, wonderful product.

I was right about the competence of the delivery driver. There was a thump on the porch tonight...

When I picked the package up, it was addressed to the next door neighbours. So I walked it on over, and lo and behold, sitting on their doorstep was a huge, and wet, box addressed to me. *rolls eyes*

So I delivered their mail, got my own, and am impressed by the packing. The delivery box was beginning to split from water damage, and has a hole punched right into it, but the inner protective box was perfectly fine.

As for the actual deluxe edition, all I can say is that the unpacking video doesn't do it justice. It's impressive, and in absolutely perfect shape, despite the state of the box it came in.

Ours will definitely go on display in the game room (right alongside the little white box I bought back in 1976), and the Wayne Reynolds prints will get framed and hung on the wall.

This is great news, thanks for sharing Paul Ryan!

I eagerly anticipate the arrival of my copy. My postman is quite reliable and caring to packages, but the shipping and handling before that step is what makes me anxious.

Deal with wife, she pays half. It's my Christmas pressie. Phew!

You paid way too much for Ptolus then. But you're right shipping to Europe is a b#&+@...

This warms my heart, despite that failure of a man your beauty made it through intact. I'm going crazy right now, people in France are getting theirs and I don't have mine in Canada. Today was the earliest expected date though, Friday is the latest for me. Hopefully it is here soon I'm bloody psyched.

Can anyone comment on the map handouts? I want to use them with the Runelords pawn collection but, the reviews for the map folio noted the page size was too small for that. I'm ok with working out the magnification required to scale it to 1" per 5' square and getting it printed at Staples but, it'd be so awesome if I could use em from the case.

From what I heard, there are no map handouts, only letters and such.
But I don't have it in hand yet.

Just because some people list their Ptolus for such astronomical prices on amazon or ebay does not mean that it's actually worth that much. The buyers price will always determine actual worth and in this case it's not that much over the original retail.

It can be a little misleading in the description above.

This is describing the 22 handouts in the text, spread across all 6 chapters. Some are notes, some are letters, some are sketches of maps, some are journal entries. I think being described as "key maps" is where the description is misleading. The unboxing video cleared up (for me at least) that we weren't getting a map pack or flip mats.

EDIT: To not double post

As above, no maps included in the box proper. But if you have the PDF, it does contain all the encounter maps and you could scale up those images. It also has all the handouts for easy printing if you don't want your players' grimy paws all over your nice clean precious handouts OR (as I've mentioned before in this thread) if you need to cut some of them up (which you do) and don't want to put your preciouses under the knife.

Just received the shipping notification that it was delivered. Skipped lunch today on the hope that it would arrive so I could go home to take it inside.

It is awesome! Only had time to take it out of the box and look at it for a few minutes, and now I can't wait for the workday to end to flip through it tonight. Nothing to add that is different from others who have received theirs, except to echo comments that I was amazed at how heavy the thing is. Pictures don't do it justice until you actually pick it up and hold it in your hands.

Definitely had the same excitement level as when I picked up Ptolus a few years ago at Gen Con, and the quality of the printing is on the same level and better with the case and the art prints. I remember thinking back then that I doubted there would ever be a comparable game book release in terms of the quality print and color presentation, but I am glad to say I was wrong.

I know there are no plans on the horizon for another project like this, but I will certainly jump on the next one if and when it comes out. If there is ever a core book release of a new edition of PF, I hope there is at least the possibiity that Paizo would give it the deluxe treatment.

From what I heard, there are no map handouts, only letters and such.

But I don't have it in hand yet.

It can be a little misleading in the description above.

The Bullet Point about the Book wrote:
Twenty-two full-color player handouts and key maps are printed on high-quality paper and tucked into slitted pages, allow players to hold important clues while leaving the GM with copies of his own.

Can anyone comment on the map handouts? I want to use them with the Runelords pawn collection but, the reviews for the map folio noted the page size was too small for that. I'm ok with working out the magnification required to scale it to 1" per 5' square and getting it printed at Staples but, it'd be so awesome if I could use em from the case.

Thanks for clearing that up, the unboxing didn't show any maps so it made me doubt the "key maps" line. Would have been pretty awesome but, some of those maps were pretty big.

I'll just have to use the pdf and figure out what page size it takes to hold the maps at true scale, then I can chop the maps into cards like the GameMastery cards. It'll be worth it to use the Pathfinder Pawns for this adventure.

So... I am interested: what could Paizo do that would make you happy?

I got my beautiful book yesterday, and regretfully it was not of the quality i had hoped. the metal clasp on the outside was broken at the hinge and disconnected, and on the actual book the last 100 pages or so had a white paste at the bottom effectively gluing the pages together. The book itself, the case, the handouts in the book and the prints are all beautifully done. While i understand in any given run there are bound to be a few fumbles that slip through the cracks (natural 1's happen), it was quite disappointing that my copy was one of those.

Sadly, I got mine today and my clasp also broke at the hinge after opening it. The tiny pin on the top side of the hinge came out. I haven't had the chance to look at it in more detail yet to see if there are other issues. I plan to check with customer service.

Emailed customer service this morning after I had a chance to look through the materials in more detail. Aside from the problems with the latch falling off noted above, everything else is great. The way the book is bound is so nice. I'm not 100% sure I prefer having the player handouts in the little pockets because it makes those pages stiffer when flipping through the book but overall there's just tons to love here. Well done Paizo.

Wow...I got my copy yesterday, and it is amazing! No problems at all with my copy. Great job, Paizo.

Got my copy in Austria yesterday: What an amazing product!

The 'book'-box is really sturdy and awesome as a display thing!
Were it not so damn exclusive, I'd get another one and put my dice and character sheet, pencils and such in to have it all in a stylish box.

The prints are great, but unfortunately I currently don't have the space to frame some and hang them for display.

The Adventure book is of killer design as well, the faux-leather is nice to the touch, the spine sturdy and an eye-catcher as well.

This thing is well worth the money asked for.

As for the protection of the product against shipping damages:
The book has a thin foam-foil on top, to protect against any possible scratches from the screws of the cases lid.
The case is packed in a thicker foam-foil in a cardboard-box. (This has the product name and info on it.
This cardboard box sits in the shipping box, surrounded by more foam-chips and space-holders.

Though the outer shipping box was a bit worse for wear from the transport, the product box had only a minor dent. The real product case and its content was in perfect condition.

I have to say that over all I am VERY pleased with the product I received. It is everything I was hoping for and more!

I do have one SMALL problem and was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same. The front section of the book, maybe the first 25 pages, were coming unbound when I removed it from the tome. It's not a huge deal but when spending so much money for the collectors edition, I was a little surprised that it wasn't checked more closely. It looks like the bottom half of the loops that bind this front section had come undone in manufacturing and the top are getting quite a strain on them. If I am careful I am sure I can work through the campaign without the pages completely coming out, but as of now they are noticeably hanging lower than the rest of the book.

Anywho my 2 cents are, if you want a very impressive edition of the Rise of the Runelords, this product is for you! I love the tome, and the art prints are top notch. The book itself is quite impressive and when I showed the slotted pages to my players, they were quite impressed. I really like the way the handouts are done. Being able to slide out the handout and still have an exact copy for my reference is invaluable!

I have never ran Rise of the Runelords. Nor have I ever had the chance to play it. As a new GM with high aspirations, this books lends me a layer of confidence. I am SURE I will be able to run this campaign start to finish and that my players (who are playing it for the first time) will enjoy it greatly. I also REALLY appreciate the sections in the forward that suggest how this can be worked into an ongoing campaign and give hints that you can run things in between each chapter of the journey. I will be working this into my campaign starting at our 5th or 6th session and this adventure looks like it will keep my players coming back for more!

Wow mine arrived to day in NZ, what an awesome book. And the smell....

My book arrived yesterday. I just go the chance to look through it all this morning. I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. This book is incredible. If anyone is on the fence for this one I recommend you go for it! The level of quality is amazing. The leather like cover for the book is incredible. Just holding this book feels great. The heavier paper was a great choice for this product. I can't wait to run this adventure for my group.

This is cool but really, just start printing copies of all the handouts in Adventure Paths in their own item and you'll have some seriously happy GMs.

Got mine and I have to say: everything about it is awesome. I'm even keeping the shipping box with the plain ROTR logo for storing my Sandpoint Townfolks :D

Is this no longer available? I placed an order on 10/15 and apparently it has still yet to ship.

I would ask this question in the customer service area. I know many orders have been delayed due to problems.

Thanks and will do.

Just got mine and overrall very pleased, my one problem though is the latching mechanism fell off the presentation case immediately after opening.

That does sound like a defect. I'd notify customer service, maybe send them a picture by email?

Just an FYI to all those who are interested but have not purchased this one yet: As of November 23rd 2015 there were less than 100 of these items in inventory (but over 25 units left). I have not seen or heard Paizo divulge how many were originally produced and from what I have read in the posts, they have traditionally kept the quantities on this product quite confidential. I was therefore surprised to see it listed in their store blog post at "http://paizo.com/store/blog/v5748dyo5li9e?Where-Did-You-Go-I-Need-to-Know" under the "Fewer than 100 Left" category. I feel fortunate that I made it in time to pick up this piece of history.

I would be curious to know how many of these were made in total (purely out of curiosity and also from a collector's standpoint), so Paizo if you ever changes your policy regarding disclosing the quantity produced, please keep me in mind!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It seems that this fine product finally sold out (after about 4 years from the first preorder option/3,5 years from being in stock)!

Congratulations are in order! :-)

Personally i think that between 500 and 1000 of it were produced.

I finally got the money to buy this too......

Hopefully they'll reprint it for a 10th Anniversary.

Nooooooooo! I LITERALLY JUST FINALLY SAVED THE LAST PENNY I NEEDED TO PAY SHIPPING!

Sigh.

Being poor sucks. :P Heck, our gaming group pays for the AP subscription I have. Oh well.

I am in the unfortunate position that I have to sell my Deluxe Collector's Edition. Although it was bought with the best of intentions, sadly circumstances have meant it has lain unopened beyond the first opening and I need extra cash.

I could sell it on eBay but I would rather that it go to a loving home where I know that it will be well looked after.

However, I'm not willing to part with it for a song; I would need serious offers and consideration for shipping (I'm in the UK, and it's a heavy beast!)

I will, of course, provide pictures to attest to the condition of the volume. All of the prints are with the volume, and have only been out of the protective envelope once, this evening, in order to get photographs.

PM me if interested.
