Why are you trying to join the Pathfinders in Ustalav? You've heard that Ustalav is one of the most difficult areas the Society operates in and if you can succeed here, you can succeed anywhere? Perhaps you grew up in or near the area? Only you know...
But all of you are in Ustalav doing odd jobs in and around the Pathfinder Lodge in Caliphas - the nation's capital. After attending a free seminar, 'Werewolves: Just a hairy guy or public safety menace?', you are handed a note requesting your attendance in Venture-Captain Beaurigmand Trice's office immediately!
Stunned at this sudden opportunity you gather your gear and present yourselves to the Venture-Captain! However he's running a bit late so, while you loiter, you may as well introduce yourselves to your fellow prospects.

Feel free to introduce yourselves to each other. :)

There was, as his father used to say, two sides to every blade when it came to the physical labor at The Hagfish - time to reflect. Not all reflections are good of course.

Perhaps it was seeing Donimah and Garridan interact at the White Deer Inn or Zel looking for work as a guard for a merchant caravan but memories of his escape from Belkzen returned. The fear from attacks on the caravans from all manners of monster. Shoanti arguing with one another in their own language about something. Would he make it out of Belkzen? Be turned back? Killed?

It was a tumultuous journey undertaken by the boldest of merchants. Even with 'guarantees' of safe travel through some areas you had all manner of disagreements and friction between orcs, the people of Trunau, the dwarves of the Mindspin Mountains, and the various Shoanti tribes. The orc and 'human' he understood; the rest was all loud, angry noise.
Arrian knew his old tribe might send out scouting parties to look for him. It wasn't that Arrian's father was some famous prince, warleader, or chieftain. In fact he was often derided by others of the tribe for thinking rather than fighting. But Magra the Mad said he saw something in Arrian and demanded he be turned over to Magra for training as a shaman for the tribe.

That training was part of the reason why he didn't seem to complain as much about either the heat of Sandpoint's summers or the cold of Sandpoint's winters. The fasting, pain, exposure to the elements, the scarring...it was all meant to draw out the divine spark within Arrian.

And it did.

His father realized that fact and pondered what to do. He knew he'd never survive a challenge against Hogrot. Possibly insane and definitely reckless Hogrot was the tribe's strongest and most fierce warrior. He couldn't have held onto the chieftainship of the Broken Spine tribe otherwise. But Hogrot's animosity towards all half-orcs as "Half breeds worthy only of contempt" worried Davor and for the future of his son. Ever since his wife Kaleria had been killed in a Shoanti raid Davor struggled to raise his son. When the mysterious fires broke out and burned down much of Heliu's Folly, the Broken Spines winter headquarters, Davor seized his chance and disappeared with Arrian during the confusion.
Arriving at Trunau, Arrian saw humans who, for the first time, weren't trying to kill him. It didn't mean they were happy to see him however - not even the human side of his family. Davor gave them all of the money and goods he'd ever salvaged to pay for them to get Arrian on a caravan out of the town. In case Hogrot or Magra decided to look for them Davor would leave Trunau in a different direction than any caravan would travel. Arrian realized what that meant; no solitary orc, not even a warrior, would last long on his own in such perilous lands.
Crying, as his father wiped at his eyes, Davor told him to be a good man - not an orc, not a human - but a man. He quickly embraced his son then set off for the open desolation of the southern Hold...

"Arrian!" Jargie's voice rose over everyone's in The Hagfish. "Boy you daydream so much you're going to cut yourself! Make sure you save some fingers to pickup up empty bowls - my lobster chowder is a big hit! It probably doesn't hurt that it's free today but hopefully...well...everything will be okay."

Jargie smiled at 'the boy'; despite his gruff exterior, and the occasional correction/punishment, he cared for Arrian. He saw the man he was becoming but also some of the more dangerous impulses his temper could land him in. It was all well and good he was making friends but were they the right friends, good people who would keep Arrian out of trouble? He hoped so. As much as Jargie planned to live forever the increasing aches and pains, slowing down, that damnable cough over the winter he still had...he wondered how much time he had left. Plus it wasn't getting any cheaper feeding a boy no...man...of Arrian's size.

Jargie was glad Arrian found religion. Although he was a bit surprised it wasn't Desna, Cayden Cailean made sense. Arrian was always for the underdog, standing up to bullies, and helping people in need. Jargie liked to think his guidance was no small reason Arrian found his way to Cayden's faith. Even though Father Abstalar was a cleric of Desna he still found time to answer Arrian's questions about Cayden, the Starstone test, and any other story - Arrian always loved stories. Did ever since he was a sad boy being talked to sleep every night with some fantastical 'adventure' Jargie went on during his youth. Of course most of it was hogwash but the boy didn't mind. He loved hearing about heroes and princesses and good triumphing over evil. Jargie learned, slowly over the years, much of that was due to Arrian's childhood.

Sighing deeply, wishing he were back out participating in games no matter how bad he was, Arrian said "I'm on it Jargie!" and hustled out to the main room to collect empty chowder bowls and then it was back to the kitchen to clean them for the next group of diners...

@Players: I'll have Mogmurch go last. If Pa is still standing, Mogmurch is going to use the Bead of Force on him. I'll post the rolls now so I don't hold up the GM later.

Mogmurch nods at the wisdom of Chieftain Poog and musters what little courage he has (almost none), moves slightly, and takes out a lackluster pearl and hurls it against the wall!

Bead of Force: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 1, 1) = 16

@GM: Since the ceiling is 20' Mogmurch will aim the pearl where I inserted a lightning bolt on the map but, going 3D style, 15' up so it doesn't hit any of the goblins. DC 16 Reflex save for Pa Buttmunch to avoid being stuck in a Resilient Sphere.

on size, a ship’s boat can carry up to a total of 16 Medium
creatures, either as crew or passengers)
Ship’s boats are usually carried on the decks of larger
ships to use as tenders to ferry passengers and cargo
from ship to shore or between ships. Some ship’s boats
are reserved for the use of off icers, while others are used
as landing craft or to carry boarding parties. An average
ship’s boat is 16 to 24 feet long (though the largest ship’s
boats can be upward of 30 feet long) and has anywhere
from four to 10 oars as well as a single mast with a
square or lateen sail. A ship’s boat has a waterborne
speed of 2 miles per hour or 20 miles per day. A ship’s
boat cannot carry any siege engines. This stat block can
be used to represent any of several types of ship’s boats,
such as cutters, gigs, jolly boats, launches, longboats,
or pinnaces, as well as other small, open boats such as
faerings, sampans, and whaleboats."

I'm guessing that's why Ramona said we'd need the ship to carry the survivors back; it has the capacity to carry a few of them. Compare the Ship's Boat above to the Swan Boat Feather Token:
"Swan Boat: A token that forms a swan-like boat capable of moving on water at a speed of 60 feet. It can carry eight horses and gear, 32 Medium characters, or any equivalent combination. The boat lasts for 1 day."

I hope you all have been well! I'm sorry I didn't check in, but it was good for my health.

Did you all still want to finish the third book? We were at the very, very beginning. No hard feelings either way. My plan is to either a) finish this third, final book or b) plan something new to be posted

Taking care of yourself is the most important thing. I didn't post it here because it wasn't active but I was the 'lucky' victim of a car accident. I was the passenger in a car, stopped at a red light and a "distracted" driver was going 30something MPH and blasted into the back of the car. Car was totaled, first responders were surprised we weren't hurt more than we were. I still have (after two months; happened June 3) two fractured bones in my right shoulder, torn tendon, bone marrow edema, and other soft tissue damage - fun!

I'm all for continuing but there are days (like today) where typing is a bit difficult.

Played & GMd Hydras Fang already. Maybe it doesn't need to be short. I'm interested in doing Seasons 7 to 10 stuff. I might wait until after Gameday XII, though. I got selected to GM a Core table of the 1e Special.

Extra Hours GM boon for Shamus:
Take 10 on Profession Scribe for total of 20 = 20 gp.

Not a bad idea to wait. Unfortunately I haven't played enough PFS scenarios to know if any of the 7 through 10 stuff is short.

If I'm remembering correctly (it's been 4 years) 9-06 'The Shores of Heaven' was a pretty fast run.

Thank you for playing, everyone! I hope you had as much fun as I did!

Thank goodness your PCs did not swear fealty to the Tempest Monarch. Wait 'til you see the negative boon on the chronicle. It's a doozy! Probably the worst negative boon I've ever seen on a chronicle.

I'll get the game reported this weekend (probably tonight) and will post a link to the chronicles in this thread soon.

I think I'm going to run another 1-5 scenario starting in a week or two. Probably another short one like this one so it's finished before that Gameday PbP Con coming up.

Thank you for running and the other players for actually doing damage - something Ekadoofus failed to do! :( He stinks!

Other players probably have more ideas for quick-running scenarios, and unfortunately most here have likely played it (I have), but you can't get any quicker than 'The Hydra's Fang Incident.' In-person, even being late to the table thanks to traffic, I think we finished in about 75 minutes.

Also, I need some help editing the chronicle pdfs after I get them into a shared Google file. Is anone able to edit the pdfs for me? A couple boons & the high tier rewards need to be crossed out.

Thanks!

I would help but I've never edited PDFs before. :(

I recently discovered that the map of the Grotto is supposed to actually be 1 square = 10 feet. I adjusted your icons and the boat. It definitely looks like that should be the right scale considering how big a swan boat actually is. You guys must have been given a miniature swan boat, though. An actual swan boat is, like, 30 ft by 60 ft.

It's a low-level scenario; we got the discount swan boat. :P
