Ferabras' glittering black teeth spread in a false grin as he replies, "I confess, I am a bit nervous to step into the magic circle inscribed in the floor, Master Caligaro. Perhaps you could come to us, and we can talk of the Key and the Book without shouting across the room?"

It's funny, this guy's name rang a bell for me, and the medieval doctor's mask on his belt helped me remember why. His name is an echo of Dr. Caligari, who's from an old German horror movie. I don't think I ever saw the movie, but I remembered the name and looked it up. The movie has a dream-murder element to it, and weird, twisted landscapes like where we are.

Thanks very much, Ladile! My father passed away last year, so there's some sad in the day, but my two boys (who at 21 and almost 18 really don't qualify as boys) are the best thing in my life, and bring me incredible joy today and just about all other days of the year.

I hope it's a good one for everybody, with the same caveat that Ladile added - sometimes these are hard days, hope you can enjoy it nevertheless.

That said, I'm sure you're right, they have difficult choices to make. I just struggle with the outcome of some of the choices they've made this year.

Once Truk is healed, Aeris nods at the recently mangled half-orc's words, "I agree, and it looks like we've found our quarry. Any thoughts as to how we get at it, if it's going to hide under the floor? Or how we can get it to come out, aside from dangling Truk as bait again?"

I didn't have time to play any Pathfinder while I was there, but I did find a great sci-fi/fantasy bookstore near the central train station - White Dwarf Books - that had a whole bunch of Pathfinder books displayed front and center.

I agree with Shieara, that's an excellent way to handle this sort of thing. That said, this was a minor misunderstanding that was made slightly more complicated by it being in PbP rather than at a table, and I don't think there's any cause for extensive soul-searching or great effort in the future to prevent any possibility of misunderstanding, because we'll never get all the way there.

On the question of Nico and Seek/Attack - I think you've summed it up well. A really strict interpretation might say you'd have to Seek first - you've ended up in a reasonably flexible middle ground, which I find is generally the sweet spot in rules interpretations.

Garif scratches his bald pate in thought, the sound of his rough fingers on his skin like two stones rubbing together, then speaks, "It does seem, sheriff, like you've got some important information, but perhaps some confounding information as well. It's like trying to follow a vein of gold, working away at the ore body, but sometimes you find you're chasing fool's gold. Not saying you're a fool at all, sir, just that pyrite and the real thing can be tough to distinguish sometimes. If, er, I make myself clear."

I hope I haven't offended him...never does to call the sheriff a fool. Sure would be good if we could reassure the prisoners that we're Pathfinders too, but I'd get caught sure as sure if I tried to tell that to 'em with the sheriff standing here.

Veshtahz snarls angrily at the horns when presented with them, furious once again at the recollection of his master’s foul treatment of him, and at the lingering essence of his memories present in the horns. He settles down somewhat when Teehax contrives to re-attach the horns with a bit of pitch and, though the horns are slightly askew and make the div appear to be taking a sharp left turn with the way they project to one side, he does seem pleased to have them back. With the horn repairs complete, the party heads back to the Twisting Garden Lodge to meet Venture-Captain Diya.

Amenopheus is present as well when the Pathfinders arrive at the lodge, perhaps because the fiendish presence that previously sought him is now a tame pet in the service of Kerevan. The Sapphire Sage and the Venture-Captain commend the party for recovering the jewel, explaining this discovery is beyond what they had hoped. When Amenopheus attempts to communicate with his ancient colleague’s memories within the sage jewel, however, it flares angrily, and he casts it across the room instinctively.

Amenopheus catches his breath before walking over to wrap the thrown jewel in a thick cloth. “Unfortunately, this confirms my earlier theory: the sages’ memories are not alone within these gems. The records you recovered and observations you made suggest that the first Jeweled Sages might not have created the sage jewels on their own, but rather modeled them off someone else’s design. Now it seems that prototype was the soul receptacle for an utterly depraved servant of the Pharaoh of Forgotten Plagues who inflicted countless atrocities upon northern Garund. If she is awakening, the whole order is at risk unless we can use your findings to deduce some way to purge this evil.” He massages his forehead for a moment before noting, “Whatever lies ahead will be difficult, and the future of the Jeweled Sages relies on what we can do about this threat. Once we have a plan, you shall be the first to know.”

On learning of the deal made with the div, Amenopheus is fairly unimpressed by Veshtahz, but his ears perk up at the mention of Zurnzal, and he inquires further, ”Tell me more about this fellow, who openly serves Grandmaster Torch. Did you come to an arrangement with him?”

When the party explains that they rejected Zurnzal’s offer, Diya laughs in grim satisfaction, while Amenopheus is a bit more restrained. ”I have my concerns about Torch’s past actions, but Torch is a capable individual, whose aid might come to play a key role in cleansing the darkness from the sage jewels.

And that’s all, folks! We made it to the end, I’ll have chronicles out soon.

Wait, I recognize that handwriting! It's the same hand as the one that wrote the letter Jorsal showed us, the letter was sent to the Society saying there was a newly-discovered Sarkorian site near Dawnton...the same letter that brought the first team of Pathfinders out to the site. What can be going on here? Should I tell the sheriff this, or wait to discuss it with my friends? Hmm, I think I should say something now, or else it might be suspect later. But we're not to make it known that we're Pathfinders...

He makes an effort to catch the eye of either of his companions, hoping they've noticed the handwriting as well, and continues to chat with the sheriff, "That does sound like a lot of evidence. Can I ask, about the dagger you found - was it bloodied? And were the victims killed by a blade, or something else?" Running a hand down his beard in thought, he adds, "If it's not too much trouble, could we talk to these Pathfinders? And perhaps we should talk to this Ekira, to see if she has learned anything beyond what the letter communicated."

Do take the +1 ring, Garret, I've got one.

Fera digests Karnhia's explanation, abruptly turning his eyes away in case she should mistake his attentive listening for unsavory peeking, grateful that his red skin hides even the most extreme blushes.

When Garret suggests checking to see whether the book and key have been stolen in the commotion, Fera joins him in making sure of this, remarking, "This is why it is useful to travel with Pathfinders of many stripes, as I would never have thought of such a ploy. But I agree, perhaps a visit to Madame Carrington is a good idea. And once we're sure she's safe, we can tell her about our nighttime visitors and see if she can add to our understanding."

Gorf – you make a reasonable point. I still think there’s a chance that the dice roller gave different results when I looked again (normally I wouldn’t think that, but this web site these days…) and changed the results. But I don’t want to start this fight with you at death’s door because I’m not sure if I goofed or not, so let’s say you were only flat-footed for one attack. With that, and the corrected damage, you would have only taken a total of 18 damage from the bulette’s leaping attack.

Gorf continues to bravely run away, pausing long enough to shoot the bulette in a tender spot! The beast howls in pain and fury! At almost the same instant, as if in response to the first bulette’s howl, a second land-shark appears, hunting in tandem with its mate! Surfacing right where Gorf stood moments ago, it arcs through the air, landing and striking out with its massive claws at Jean-Claude!

As Gorf hops down from a wagon and introduces himself, the mustached man driving said wagon lets go of the reins, leaving his mule train to plod slowly along the road to Janderhoff. The driver turns towards his covered load and throws back a tarp to reveal a stack of crates, stamped with the words 'Igel's Fine Frog's Legs'. He hastily checks the lids of all the crates, looks back over his shoulder at Gorf, then does a more careful check of his cargo before shrugging and clambering back to his seat. Rob - I do emergency response work for the US EPA. My usual role with wildfires is overseeing the cleanup of hazardous waste left behind afterwards (in the northern CA fires last year, my group cleaned up household hazardous waste and asbestos from over 8000 destroyed properties). But this time was different, as there was a big mine that is a Superfund site, within the boundary of the fire. There was a fire moving up a pipeline inside a 1200’ long mine tunnel, that would eventually reach a huge sulfide ore body that could ignite if the fire reached it, causing all sorts of problems. So I ended up running a team of over 50 people to extinguish the fire 750’ down a tunnel filed with hazardous air contaminants (which we finally did at 2 AM) and recover the TWO robots that had gotten stuck trying to do recon of the fire before we sent in recon and fire teams.

Exhausting (worked a 20-hour day on limited sleep), but one of the more gratifying moments of my career.

Garif catches Rees’ subtle lift of an eyebrow, his own eyes widening slightly as the elf’s thoughts seem to flow through the little gesture. Wow, that was a lot of information in an eyebrow!

Garif shrugs back at his companion, clearing his throat once, as if to convey, It is difficult to know what the right answer is with this young buck. Do we give him a chance to prove himself capable of rearing such a creature responsibly, or would we simply be damning the poor beast to a lifetime of misery at the boy’s thoughtless hands? I hesitate to say it, but he has made reasonable decisions since we found him - perhaps he should be given a chance, but not before we seek the sort of reassurances you mention.

”I think that’s an interesting notion,“ Garif replies to Lander, ”and I’m pleased to hear you describe it in terms that show you recognize what a responsibility it will be, to raise a live creature - and a dangerous one at that - to care for it properly, and train it so it will serve you, but also live a fulfilling life itself.“ With a little nod at Rees, he continues, ”Perhaps we could help you select a trainer, which could benefit you and the chick you hope to raise.“

I use the ExtractPDF site that RePete linked to, as I find that I often end up with map markings I don't want if I just copy it using Adobe. Extract the image also has the advantage of letting me create a file on my computer with everything in it - maps (without creatures, secrets doors and stuff marked), illustrations, etc. That way I can also upload and link to the images of NPCs and such, so that the party gets the visual aid.

”As a student of nature - though a specialist in rocks - I can tell you, Kleines, that red things are faster than blue things,“ Garif observes. ”You’ll note it in many cases, but particularly when it comes to carts and wagons. Drivers of red carts always seem to be racing down the road, or having a chat with the authorities about driving too fast.“

Garif moves to the side of the road, keeping Nico close at hand, and says, "I'm ready when you all are. If we don't have a better way to draw them across, I could send Nico part of the way over and call him back, as he's very quick. He'd probably listen, in spite of being faced with the two biggest, juiciest birds he's ever seen."

"Ah, such tranquility!" Garif says with a satisfied sigh, pleased to have gotten everyone onto the road back to Silverhall. "You see, Lander, anyone can enjoy such peace and quiet, be they an adventurer or not. Sometimes you can just tell there's no threat lurking in the trees, nothing to spring out of the water and eat you, and you can just enjoy life!" Gesturing around himself, he continues, "You don't have to wonder, 'Where on the map am I?' You can just enjoy wherever you happen to be."

Right? Right?

Edit: please note this post went up moments before the ostriches appeared on the map.

Ferabras is quietly surprised how regularly a world-spanning organization like the Pathfinder Society comes to rely on the personal cash reserves of its agents, but he doesn't hesitate to agree with Zora. "I will happily pay a share of that to see this evil addressed," he says, adding to Weatherby, "though you should simply give us the information for the same reason."

Also fine with that amount.

Garif attempts to be diplomatic as he weighs in, but it is still not in his nature to phrase things in the way others might like to hear. "Yes, as my colleagues say, it's important not to have rocks in your head."

As Lander walks out of the tent, Garif quietly asks his companions, "So, Dame Lebeda asked us to bring him home, which we could do one way or another - though she'd probably rather we not rough him up. But she also asked that we show him that the adventuring life is not all pomade and potpourri - which means we let him make a few mistakes, maybe get beat up a bit by someone else. Which Shieara would be happy to watch, I'm guessing."

With a shrug, he concludes, "I guess we go along with him - maybe even tell him he's now leading a band of adventurers, since he's going to think that anyway. Keep him from getting killed and hope he learns that the adventurer's life can be much like a goblin - nasty, brutish and short."

"Can someone figure out getting that chest open?" Garif asks the others. "Probably with those keys, but if not, we'll wish we had Iovo with us, I bet." He considers the shattered cage and bird remnants a moment, shaking his head in puzzlement, then picks up the note.

"Hmm," Garif says, scratching his beard in thought as he reads the note, "I hate to say this, but we know someone whose name begins with M, who has a shop where a lordling hangs out." He glances at Kleines, then offers another clue, in case the burly fellow hasn't quite sorted it out, "He drinks mare's milk?"

That's an interesting approach you've taken wtih goodberry, Bernie. I hadn't ever noticed the duration being 1 day/level. So you really can have a stash of them on hand. I have a third-level vine leshy with the Grapevine trait also, so I can cast it each day and have 3 castings of it handy at any given time.

Very interesting, and even more useful than I thought. The healing is a bit limited, but I like that it lets you decide how many points you're going to heal, and it lets Viognier offer a very nourishing bar snack along with his wine!

Has anyone else been having weird issues with new post notifications since the massive web site change (I'm still hesitant to call it an upgrade)? I fairly often will post in a game, then refresh my campaigns tab a few minutes later to see if anything has been posted anywhere. I'll see a new post notice for the game I just posted in, but when I check the thread there's only my recent post.

It doesn't always happen, and I haven't quite sussed out the pattern that causes or prevents it, but I'm wondering if others have seen this issue. It has not ruined my life (yet!), but it's a bit annoying.

"I think we can all agree on giving these two a nice knock on the head," Garif says, nodding as Shieara speaks. "And I support tying them to a tree for good measure."

Laying a restraining hand on Nico as Coco flies enticingly close, the dwarf adds, "I also think having Coco take a look around sounds like a fine plan. I had considered offering to have Nico do the same, but he can't bring much information back, and folk tend to get a little more nervous about a panther than they do about a crow."
