Starfinder Society Second Edition Playtest

Thursday, June 27, 2024

The Starfinder Second Edition Playtest is set to launch midsummer at GenCon 2024! Full details about this open playtest, which is focused on the Starfinder Playtest Rulebook, will be announced in July 2024. Six Starfinder Second Edition adventures will be released to support the playtest, including two softcover adventures* and four short digital-only scenarios**.

We’ve written each playtest adventure and playtest scenario to be like the adventures you’ve come to love from Paizo. They feature narratives and encounters that showcase how we can use the new Second Edition rules to create evocative stories in the Starfinder setting. These include all-new art and major setting events, and it’s our hope that these adventures remain relevant long after our playtest is over and we’re well into the new edition.

That said, these adventures are not specifically built for Organized Play. So how does Organized Play fit into all of this?

So happy you asked!

When the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest launches, visit starfinderplaytest.com and download the Starfinder Playtest Tracking Sheet. Each time you play one of the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest Adventures or Starfinder Second Edition Playtest Scenarios listed on this sheet, check off the associated box. By checking off these boxes, you’ll unlock rewards in our Organized Play campaigns! Earn Achievement Points in Starfinder Society (first edition), gain access to exciting alien ancestries from the wider galaxy in Starfinder Society (first edition) and Pathfinder Society (second edition), and gain access to campaign-exclusive backgrounds themed to the events of these adventures in Starfinder Society (second edition). No need to select which rewards you want most—you get them all!

For the purpose of Starfinder Society (first edition), these adventures are considered repeatable, meaning players and GMs will earn Achievement Points every time they play or run them. Characters do not earn in-game rewards such as credits or XP for these adventures.

We hope this encourages players engaged in our Organized Play campaigns to enjoy these adventures and to participate in the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest!

I look forward to charting our course into the future with all of you!

This will maybe be self evident when the tracking sheet launches but will the rewards be tracked via the boons tab and unlocked much the same way scenario boons are for pfs2 scenarios or via the tracking sheet itself?

The unlocks for PFS2 and SFS1 will just be tracked on the Tracking Sheet (aside from AcP which will obviously use the online system). We're not ready to comment on what the rewards system will look like for SFS2 yet as that's still a year away. I think that answers your question?

Will any of these scenarios introduce SF2e starship combat rules?

No; the Starfinder team has already been very clear that the Playtest Rulebook does not contain rules for starship combat. These scenarios are adventures meant to use the rules in the Playtest Rulebook, and do not introduce new rules content.

Will GMs get 1e GM credits for running playtest adventures or scenarios? I’m working on that 5th Nova!

Wonderful news - thanks for making this choice! Lets the handful of us still working towards that 5th nova get to have our (2e) cake and eat it (for 1e benefits) too!

Reporting Note: I've just finished setting up the reporting for the first two playtest scenarios, and I've gotten it to work the way I want it to. When reporting playtest scenarios, do not include character numbers in the reporting, just player and GM OP ID numbers. The system will award Achievement Points as expected.

Including character numbers isn't wrong, but if the same scenario gets reported to the same character number twice, it will deny the second one and the player or GM won't get their AcP. Best to just leave it off entirely.

Regarding the mentioned adventures, will the softcover ones also be available as PDF and will the PDF be released for free?

Interested to see the playtest materials. Do we know (has it been announced) how long the official playtest window will be open?

Am I the only person constantly bothered that the Androids have a penalty to social rolls for being "emotionally unaware"? Creatures that don't even have the same sensory organs as the other ancestries don't take that penalty, why do Androids? The original Androids were created so that Androffans would have something more human to interface with besides computers, so why do the androids have social penalties while the computers don't?

Androids and Skittermander are the only Ancestries with penalties, and I don't really understand why mechanically they should have them.

what about the chronicles - do they just go against the Players ID to earn checkboxes with no XP or credits etc?

I'm not seeing the "Starfinder Playtest Tracking Sheet" on the playtest site. Are we still supposed to use that, or is the reporting system all that's needed?

The tracking sheet is located in the back of the scenarios, and I'll work on getting it added to the downloads package once we're all back from Gen Con.

Should I be giving out a Playtest Tracking Sheet to every player each time I run a game, or should I check off multiple boxes on just one Tracking Sheet that the player brings to the table each time?

Wayfinders 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ***** Contributor

If they have a tracking sheet, just check off boxes. If they don't have a tracking sheet, give them one!

Thanks for GMing the Starfinder Playtest!

Silver Crusade 5/5 5/55/5 **** Venture-Captain, Germany—Bavaria

If people are good about reporting their sessions the tracking sheet is likely just there for the player to remember what they have unlocked. (as the playtest things you have played and run show up in your sessions once reported)
That said the tracking sheet can also be downloaded on the main playtest page, so this is one instance of where GMs could avoid the burden of having to print these.

How is Playtest #3, with 10th level characters, to be handled since we sent have pregens?

Players must bring their own custom playtest characters. The standard procedure for playtests is in the PFS2 Guide here.

The relevant table of Character Wealth for starting at higher levels can be found here using the rate 1 sp = 1 credit.

On the playtest tracking sheets, it lists Empires Devoured as three chapters. However, Empires Devoured is four chapters. How does this work for reporting? Are players and GMs not receiving credit for chapter four of Empires Devoured?

The way I read the pacing, it looks like 2 and 3 will run together. There is an Advancement Track on page 5 that follows the 1, 2+3, 4 plan. YMMV based on party composition and how long part 2 takes.
