Enter The New Seeker

Wednesday, September 25, 2019

Earlier today, we previewed one of our scenarios releasing today. Now it is time to present Starfinder Society #2-07: Four for the First. This scenario represents a major step for the Organized Play Campaign, as we introduce players to the four potential new leaders of the Starfinder Society!

Four for the First acts in many ways like a quest pack-style scenario as the core revolves around thefour candidates seeking the mantle of First Seeker. The PCs partake in four distinct quests, each pertaining to an area of interest to one of the four candidates. That is where the similarity to standard scenarios ends. Unlike most scenarios, we highly encourage groups to book as much time as needed to complete this adventure, even if that requires booking this over multiple game sessions—we really want to make sure each of our candidates has a time to shine!

Speaking of our candidates, let’s get a quick preview of each potential First Seeker.

  • Calder Soren is morlamaw (detailed in Alien Archive 3) who’s risen within the Society and has a desire to see the establishment and recovery of lodges out in Near Space and the Vast.
  • Avor Stelek is a red-skinned Akitonian (also known as a hylki) who’s both a doctor and a swordsman. He looks to recruit new agents and to protect those new recruits.
  • Tara Nova is a vidcaster who wants to bring the Society to new levels of fame. She doesn’t believe that old foes have suffered enough for their past transgressions and looks to ensure other organizations don’t interfere with the Society.
  • Ehu Hadif Ko'Ra Amares of Clan Tolar is a kasatha who believes that the Society still has much to learn from the past. Ehu wants the Society to investigate past mysteries, and his goals are set to take the Starfinder Society back to the library world of Athaeum.
A morlamaw, a blue-skinned walrus-like alien, wearing circular wire-rimmed glasses. A smiling bald red-skinned humanoid with a pointed goatee and mustache. A grinning young woman with long blonde hair, orante purple armor and intricate tattoos pumps her fist triumphantly. A kasatha in decorative red armor covered with purple glyphs raises one hand.

Now the logistics: Voting opens Wednesday, September 25th, 2019, at 4 pm Pacific time, and closes November 20th, 2019, at noon Pacific time. We hope leaving a wide window between scenario launch and the end of voting offers our players opportunity to interact with all candidates before voting. Each player may experience the scenario multiple times (replayable, right?!?), just with different characters, and we encourage multiple playthroughs. Getting to know the candidates is important, as each player may only vote once no matter how many times their characters play the adventure, so be sure to get all the replays in before placing your vote.

For players who don’t play the scenario during the voting window, no problem! The scenario remains playable (and repeatable) after November 20th, players just don’t get the opportunity to vote for the new First Seeker.

We chose Survey Monkey as our platform. Once you’ve played the scenario, return here and click here to vote! We will also post links to the voting on Facebook and Twitter so that more people can find the survey, as well as post some reminders during the voting period. We would also appreciate any procedural feedback as comments on this thread, to help us refine our processes should we do something similar in the future.

Next week, join us for the October installment of our regular feature - Stars, Cons, Spotlights!

Looking forward to the all votes,

Ehu - Possibly the most boring character ("I'd like one stereotypical kasatha to go, please"), but with by far the most interesting direction. He got my vote.

Tara - Probably a better fit as First Seeker this season (or even last). Wound up my second choice mostly by default.

Avor - His candidacy was doomed the second he was introduced with basically, "Oh, by the way, if he's elected, the Dataphiles and Wayfinders go to the back of the bus." Seriously, Paizo? He seems like he'd be the one of the group who'd be the best leader in a story, but an NPC leading from the front in an RPG (a) isn't easy to do well and (b) usually will result in an unsatisfactory experience.

Calder - He's a hippie walrus. That's literally his entire platform. And it's probably enough to win, but I'm not hopping on that train. Last place for me, and its not especially close.

Like real life, I've probably given this vote more thought that either is healthy or than most people. Also like real life, I expect the actual results to be the exact opposite of my order of preference.

I mostly agree on Calder.

He's fine and he's got Sore Thumb factor out the wazoo but I dont find his mission to be all that interesting and I am simply loathing the prospect of having to roleplay as this guy on the regular.

I do have to say that while I actually find Ehu more interesting than Calder, I have no problem with lines.

But that is because I'm type of person who dislikes it when people jaywalk or walk through red lights even though there are no cars in sight :P Morlamaws have it right on improtance of following empty lines!

According to the writer, Morlamaws were inspired more by "The Walrus and the Carpenter" than "I am the Walrus".

Though that doesn't appear to be the same for Calder.

Calder’s inspiration came from the bass player in a metal band. The skin color is defined in Alien Archive 3 in the racial description. The John Lennon glasses are an effect I chose, similar to how Ozzy Osborne wears them. Anyone considering this character a hippie or inspired by hippies is sorely mistaken.

Yeah, have to say that I was unsure of John Lennon being the actual reference because of the "brutal bass solo" he does in the scenario :D But I don't even know anything about John Lennon to refute any claims players make.

Seriously though, I'm confused if some people actually do vote in character rather than out of character .-.

Doing former doesn't really make sense to me especially since one player can have multiple characters, but I guess I can see players voting out of character for most abrasive option on purpose. Like if the original fifth "The guy who wants to take control of society to use them as his personal minions"(whose player never replied) was option, some people would have voted them for giggles :p

I voted IC for this one as well. He is my first character and he's level 12, therefore the most invested at the moment.

As a side note, as a player, I would question the relevance of Soren's presence in this thread, or any other candidate for that matter. As far as I can tell, it matters little what the original player intended for their character. They are not going to be writing the scenarios or storylines. From where I stand, the characters that were portrayed in the replayable scenario are who we are voting for. I would assume the writers have already decided what the candidate's personalities are.

While I appreciate the explanations in the GM thread from the players who's characters are candidates, it seems to me to be mute. *shrug* That is what you get when you hand your character for someone else to play. The other person is inevitably going to take liberties. And, in this case, the 'new' character that emerges is the only one that matters to me. Ya submitted your characters to become NPCs, how did you expect it would turn out?

Having finally gotten a chance to play this, I can safely say that the NPC actions/inactions/interactions did firmly determine my voting approach for the character that was playing, and the rest of the Character Barracks was in firm agreement with the assessments.

This is one of those scenarios though where GM's portrayal of characters means that you might want to either play scenario multiple times or read it yourself if you want to be more fair though.

Like I straight up admitted during running this scenario that Tara Nova's brand of militarism made it impossible for me to run her part of the adventure without biased tone :p (I was kind of unable of emphasizing the parts of her speech and goals that sound REALLY bad)

I mean let's face it:
When character says borderline genocidal things without irony, its kinda hard to not make it sound evil-ish :P

Haven't read GM reference thread yet, but Soren's player here hasn't done any campaigning, they just explained which musician character was actually reference to. So not sure why that would warrant this huge post about it?

I'm going to go against my better judgement once more and post on this thread in reply.

1) I would second the advice to read through the scenario to inform your vote.

2) Soren has done varying degrees of campaigning. There is a whole thread dedicated to it. Maybe considered low-key, but to say that Soren has not campaigned is false. I have no problem with it, in fact I participated. I was just pointing out the potential irrelevance of Soren's view, or any other candidate's view, on their character due to the potential NPCification. A process that will very likely detach the character's creator from the candidate NPC.

5/5

I voted as a conglomeration of the majority of my character's IC thoughts and feelings, as well as my wishes as a player.

The characters that I played through the scenario with, Professor Quid the Science Squid and Zalibraxis, Dragonbot, could not be more different in their agendas; Quid just wants a friendly Society acceptable to the children who watch her vidshow, while all Dragonbot wants to do is become a blue dragon, crush his enemies, and retire on a pile of gold coins. You can't really reconcile those goals, though, if I squint, I can make Avor work (Dragonbot,

Spoiler:
like the android in the scenario,
is embroiled in a legal problem stemming from achieving sentience as a prop in heavy metal music videos. He's suing the producers for back pay from his years of non-sentient service).
