A Tale of Two Covers

Friday, August 1, 2014

The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Advanced Class Guide is only a few weeks from release, and we're all getting excited about what the book has to offer. Over the last several weeks, we've revealed a ton of details about the 10 classes in the book, from hints at their game details to a look at the backgrounds of the iconic characters that represent them in the book's art. Looking over the final hardcover here on my desk, I'm enormously proud of the work our team has put into it, and I'm grateful for the tireless efforts of our playtesters, who made the Advanced Class Guide shine with their diligent testing and commentary. We could not have done this book without you, and we're all really pleased with how it came together.

With one major exception.

The cover of the Advanced Class Guide contains a huge error of the most embarrassing kind imaginable—we printed the book with the wrong logo.

That's right, the Advanced Class Guide, in many ways the most important release of the year, features the wrong logo. Instead of the "Pathfinder Roleplaying Game" logo, the hardcover's front cover features the "Pathfinder Adventure Path" logo.

The story of how something like this slipped through our assiduous quality controls turns out to be pretty boring. On the third round of back-and-forth changes after the book was sent to the printer, an image link somehow got changed, switching the logo to the wrong one at the absolute last minute. After the last minute, in fact. We have sign-off approval sheets for every stage of editing. Multiple employees sign off on the correct logos, on the trademark circle, on the "printed in country," basically on every single element of a book. But this error was introduced after all of those safeguards had been correctly adhered to, and the first time we noticed the mistake was when the first copies arrived from the printer.

Naturally, we were mortified and checked with our printer about turning around a ship with tens of thousands of copies of our book, destroying them, and reprinting from scratch. That effort would have cost more than $100,000, and resulted in literally tons of 99.9999% correct books going into a landfill. We've had considerable success over the last few years, but honestly there's a lot more that we can do with $100,000 to benefit the game above and beyond wiping some egg from our faces. Ultimately, after lots of consideration, we decided that it wasn't worth the expense to fix the logo.

And to be clear, the misprint concerns about three square inches on the front cover. The logo on the spine is correct. The logo on the cover page is correct. The logo on the back is correct. The logo on every spread in the book is correct. One image link broke, to one logo. Yes, it's the most important one, and yes, that's very embarrassing, but ultimately it makes no difference to the book's content. Many folks I've shown the book to did not even notice the difference, as the logos are very similar.

We've already shipped the book to a few distributors. Subscribers could start receiving them as early as next week. Many of you will notice the different logo, and will naturally have questions. I wanted to get out in front of that and explain what went wrong, and why we decided not to fix it.

It's a bummer. It's something we'll fix on subsequent printings, assuming that we do them. We considered making a sticker, or a paper wrap-around cover, or just about anything, but ultimately decided that it wouldn't make much of a difference. The covers are screwed up. Putting a little sticker over the mistake wouldn't fix the mistake, it'd just make the book look even more messed up.

So, yeah. Lame. The Advanced Class Guide has the Pathfinder Adventure Path logo on it. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause to bibliophiles everywhere. Know that we feel your pain.

The book remains incredible, despite the cosmetic error. We're sure you'll really like it, and we've taken what steps we can to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.

Thanks for your understanding.

I am glad you guys decided just to go ahead with the misprinted books instead of delaying this book more. It is the delay that Cosmo must have been going for.

As for this being collectible...unless a lot of people suddenly get irrationally angry at the mistake on the cover and throws it away...I doubt this will be worth anything.

... are you also doing a Collector's Edition for the PDF?

It should be noted that this is the first adventure path in which the PCs go from 1st to 20th level in a single volume. Its just how me and the team rolls. We don't need six volumes to get the job done.

As a small side note, to make room for that much advancement, we had to cut the adventure part.

Speaking as someone who worked in a service bureau, are you absolutely certain that it was your mistake as opposed to the printer? If you signed off with the correct logo, what may have happened is someone at the printer loaded up the wrong logo. Presuming they have done work for you before, they probably have all the logos.

And I'm speaking as someone whose co-worker made a $500K mistake - he loaded the wrong font, it bumped the phone# off the page, and it went out to every newspaper in the country. Not technically his fault as multiple proofreaders signed off on it, mistake and all.

If your final disk is correct when being sent out, that's the printer's fault - now maybe they don't give you $100K or reprint the whole thing, but certainly that's a negotiating tool for next time...at a minimum

Psh, adventures are overrated...bring on the downtime!

When this book is released I'm going to write a review from the viewpoint of a thoroughly confused GM who thought he was buying an adventure path.

While I find the new classes interesting, I can't help but think that the AP spends too much time introducing new rules mechanics and not enough time developing the plot - at times I struggled to find the storyline. I really enjoyed the love story development between Zadim and Enora though!

This is great notice...but ultimately a yawn. You make enough stuff, something will get messed up. Some folks will complain, but most of us aren't bothered by this sort of thing....

So are we going to get our regular Friday PF Battles update today or did this take it's place?

Customer Service, please do not cancel any of my subscriptions.

Well, fine! I'm canceling all of your subscriptions effective immediately!

In fact, I'm canceling so hard that every Paizo product you've ever gotten is going to disappear off of your shelves. *POOF*

No worries! Customer Service will not actually cancel your subscriptions, unless seriously requested. And I have no magic powers to make things disappear.

Lies!! She's a Ray of Funshine!! We don't even know what she can do!! For all we know she could obliterate your entire Bookshelf not just the books on said shelf. Her power is absolute! FUNSHINE!

Well, as a ray, she still has to make the ranged touch attack.

Dark Archive

WHAT!!! One line on the cover is wrong?! That's it I'm disowning you Paizo! How can I live if that cover line says Adventure Path rather than Roleplaying game!?!?! :c I demand a reprint!!! lol.

All in jest of course. I couldn't care less that the line says adventure path rather than roleplaying game. So long as the content in the book isn't effected than that is what matters to me.

Still can't wait for this release, buying it straight away. Fear not Paizo, we still love you!! Keep up the good work.

Shadow Lodge

So can we expect the Advanced NPC Guide with 10 new hybrid classes based on the existing 5 NPC classes as the 2nd part of the Advanced AP hardcover line?

Pretty sure we can arrange for some fairly heinous bonuses to that attack. ;)

Really does bring to mind the sage advice to not judge a book by its cover...

If I hadn't happened to come across this article by dumb chance, I might not have even noticed the error. I will be too busy reading everything in between the covers once it arrives. Kudos to paizo for admitting the mistake and apologizing for it.

you could ...I don't know... send people a sticker with the right logo to put over top of it.

ah what ever, I'm fine with it, becomes a collector's item or something

I'm sorry to say that we've looked into it extensively, and it was a member of our art staff who made the final mistake. The fault is entirely ours.

And to answer a question from a few pages back, no I did not fire anyone over this, because I am not a monster.

It was just a dumb mistake. A very embarrassing, potentially very, very expensive mistake, but a dumb mistake nonetheless.

At the very least I hope we get a blog post outlining it as an option for caster characters. Though is it Ray of Funshine or Summon Ray of Funshine? Either way there will be fun.

Very pleased, personally. This error has given me a glimpse of some fragmentary, not-usually-released-information to wildly and inaccurately extrapolate from:

Don't look at this as a mistake. Look at it as creating a limited edition collectable. We all know everybody loves the minor errors like this, and if anybody ever ask just say that was your whole plan all along to seem smart.

By the way, someday I look forward to getting a book with it's cover printed upside down. That's the jackpot right there. I call dibs on it. ;)

As for the mis-print: no big deal. What really matters is what's inside the book.

The way I see it we're just getting a unique part of Paizo history.

Ahhh wait these books have stuff on the cover?? Damn I need to stop reading all the great content and take a look.

P.S. Thanks for owning up to the mistake...that does not happen often and shows character! Once again you earned my respect

Silver Crusade

People...read the covers? Why read the covers when you can read the contents?! Covers are just fancy modern versions of things like your scroll case to protect your scrolls of Raise Dead or Limited Wish. It's the outside, it has the name on it for reference sake (The one labeled Fireball is not to be confused with the one labeled True Ressurection while in the middle of the fight) and what else about it matters?

I certainly can see it becoming a collectible in 20 years though, heh.

I'll actually be sad if my copy at GenCon has the right logo. ;)

I think most of us read enough to identify the book. Does this one say "Advanced Class Guide" on the front? Good enough, now let's open it up and see what's inside....

This kind of mistake just makes it a collector's edition. Don't worry.
