Welcome to Siege of Gallowspire!
My goal is for you to have fun while playing a balanced Pathfinder Society game.
Please review the below, which covers some special rules for the special as well as my expectations as a GM.
Siege of Gallowspire Rules
About Champion Mode
This event has two difficulties: Soldier and Champion. Soldier is slightly more challenging than a typical Pathfinder Society special event. Champion is this scenario’s “hard mode,” with increased challenge throughout. As usual for scenarios with increased difficulty, all players at the table must agree to that difficulty. Players who begin in Champion Mode who find the challenges too great can choose to switch to Soldier Mode.
This is a Champion table. If you do not want to play "hard mode," please de-list from the spreadsheet and sign up for another table. Once we're underway, if any one player doesn't want to do Champion anymore, we will swap to Soldier.
Aid Characters
There are two kinds of character you can play during the special: a Primary Character (the PC who personally faces the scenario’s encounters and earns a Chronicle sheet at the end of the scenario), and an Aid Character, who helps with tasks and AiD Tokens throughout.
A player can designate up to 3 of their PCs of 5th level or higher as Aid Characters. Aid Characters must be different PCs from the Primary Character (the character playing the special). The player does not need all of their Chronicle sheets for their Aid Characters—they only need the Aid Character’s most recently earned Chronicle sheet. The only information from this sheet that is relevant is the Aid Character’s name, number, and level. The Chronicle sheet is also a place to record whether anything bad happens to the Aid Character in the course of the scenario. Note that all risks Aid Characters take are opt-in. Aid Characters have two functions in this scenario: to generate Aid Tokens, and to provide support in Aid Missions that occur during the adventure.
When the player designates a character as an Aid Character, the player chooses one of the following roles and assigns the character to that role. Each table may assign up to 5 Aid Characters to each role. This restriction represents the expedition’s need for agent to take on a balanced variety of roles, and also helps to ensure that there are enough Aid Characters of each type to succeed at Aid Missions.
Your Aid Characters cannot participate in other Pathfinder Society adventures while in the Siege, and risks death.
A character’s class and character build does not dictate what roles he can take, though players are likely to want to pick roles that fit with their characters’ themes. If a player does not have 3 Aid Characters available, she can fill any remaining slots with generic 4th-level NPC Pathfinders of any role. These 4th-level NPCs are less likely to succeed than PC Aid Characters at all tasks, but they give all players a way to participate in this scenario’s mechanics. The descriptions below give some examples of the types of routine tasks that Aid Characters in each role perform during the mission, but these characters also perform heroic actions when they grant Aid Tokens or attempt Aid Missions.
Guard: The combat encounters detailed in this scenario are handled by the Primary Characters, but there is still plenty of danger to deal with. A character assigned to this role helps provide security for the expedition. Characters in this role drive off minor threats that crop up, protect the rear of the expedition, and generally ensure the mission can continue unhindered.
Medic: Most of the healing resources in the expedition are wielded by the Primary Characters for the benefit of further advancing the mission, but the Aid Characters are likely to need healing too. An Aid Character assigned to this role treats wounds, cares for the bodies of the fallen, and dispenses medical supplies.
Muscle: Moving what is effectively a small army into hostile terrain is a challenging task. A character assigned to this role helps move heavy objects, clears passageways, and transports equipment.
Scout: Little is known about the Gallowgarden and the areas below Gallowspire, and what information does exist is often inaccurate. A character assigned to this role roams ahead of the main expedition, learning what threats are present and giving advice on how best to navigate them.
Spellcaster: The sheer number of Pathfinders on this mission presents a heavy demand for spellcasting, particularly spells that can protect agents from harm or remove conditions that they incur. Spellcasters meet up with Pathfinder agents between battles, helping prepare them for the dangers ahead. They may have their own innate spellcasting ability, or they might carry an arsenal of magic items for this purpose.
Aid Tokens
In this scenario, Aid Tokens work a bit differently from in past scenarios. Instead of having generic Aid Tokens that PCs can improve with their skills, each Aid Token represents the efforts of a specific Aid Character.
Each Aid Character role is associated with a specific benefit that Aid Character in that role can provide. After the players assign Aid Characters to roles, the Table GM should place the Aid Token Reference Sheet on the table, which details all of these benefits (Handout will be put on Slides after we assign). Table GMs should also distribute 3 Aid Tokens to each player, corresponding to their Aid Characters’ roles (see above). The player can then write in each of their Aid Characters’ names on the Aid Tokens. For the 4th-level NPC Pathfinders, players can invent names, or just write “Pathfinder.”
At this time, each player has the opportunity to commit any number of their PC Aid Characters to a more challenging, heroic task. This task provides greater benefits, but it also introduces a risk that the Aid Character may come to harm and therefore be unable to help out during later opportunities in this scenario.
Tasks are particularly difficult for lower-level Aid Characters, who are likely to be injured in the process. The 4th-level NPC Pathfinders are unwilling to attempt the heroic tasks.
My Table Expectations
Post Frequency
Be ready to post at least once a day. I am more active than many other PbP GMs and am willing to post more than once a day to keep things moving at a good clip. Since this is a special, I will bot you if you do not post once every 24 hours.
Maturity and communicativeness go a long way! Please post here or in any supplemental channels, the group decides to use (Google Hangouts, Slack, Discord, etc).
Botting
Include botting instructions in your profile. If you have a preference for who runs your character, write that down too. If you or your preferred botter have not posted in more than 24 hours, I will bot your character to keep the game moving.
Marching Order & Maps
To speed things up I ask the group for a marching order at the beginning of the adventure. Unless otherwise noted I will begin your PCs on the map in this order, where the scenario says to.
Initiative
I will roll all Initiative checks for PCs and NPCs, sort them, and organize them into blocks. I will bold the names of characters whose turn it is to act. I will include status of HP, etc.
When it is your turn to act, post. Do not wait for someone else to post just because they had a higher Initiative inside your initiative block. If you know what you want to do but want to wait for someone else’s action first, just say that. To encourage timely posting and avoid unnecessary delays, I will retroactively include bonuses where it makes sense for allies who are in the same initiative block, even if one player posts before getting that bonus. For example, if a fighter posts right before the bard, and the bard always Inspires Courage, I will include the inspire bonus in the fighter's attack and damage rolls even though the player didn't do so. Where possible, I will update initiatives and note the bonuses each player is receiving.
Rolling Saves
When asked to roll a save, it must always be the first dice roll on your next post. If you do not do this, I will roll the save for your PC.
Character Taglines & Profiles
Put your character's gender (so we know which pronouns to use), race (so we know what we see), class (optional) and their status in the fields labeled "Race" and "Class." Status usually means current/maximum hit points, ACs, Saving Throws witj modifiers, Spells or spell slots, and other resources. The status tagline might look like something this (copy/pasted from my oracle) — note that I have not only included spell slots and spell-likes, also important consumables (albeit abbreviated) such as the once-a-day mnemonic vestments and the character's current disguise (which might have an impact on how NPCs interact with them):
Gen. Neut. Oracle (they) | HP 56/56 | Init+ 5 | F:+9 R: +9 W: +10 (+18 vs chm/compul.; +12 vs illus/fear/desp.) | AC 21 T 16 F 19 | CMD 14 | Speed 20(30) | M. Bridge: 7/7 | Etern. Hope: 1/1 | Vest. 1/1 | V. Pool: 9/10 | Spells: 1: 6/8 2: 6/8 3: 6/7 4: 3/4 | Current disguise: Vonner Flay, Dogcatcher | Rerolls: 0/1 Active: Siv. Veils, Longstrider, Heroism, 6 Mirror Images, Shld. Faith, Death Ward
In your character profile, please include the complete stat block as well, so the GM can audit your character. Be prepared to scan or take pictures of any chronicle sheets or boons upon request.
Chronicle Information
In order to be able to generate a PFS chronicle, I ask that each character please provide me the following information here, in the discussion thread. I would also like you to provide the names and numbers of all Aid Characters, along with a link to their profile. You can fill in the Aid character info piecemeal, just as long as it's there.

Please fill out the Google slide linked in my profile.
We may also have a 7th player; I am willing to run a 7-person table but would like consent from ALL players. Please let me know whether you are OK with this here, or in a PM. If even one person says they are not OK with a 7th we will not do so.
I will never run a 7-person table without unanimous consent from players.

I'm much more cool with it in PbP since there's more freedom with time.
I could either bring a bard(arcane duelist)/8, cavalier(order of the cockatrice)/2 or a cavalier (sister-in-arms)/9, bard(argent voice)/2. The former provides all the standard bard things plus has some b*+&~@+~ with intimidate and dirge of doom. The latter is a bit more versatile since she has two cavalier orders, plus all the sisterhood style feats and a banner of the scarlet rose.
My preference is the latter but since it's a harder scenario, I'm welcome to input!

J. A. Chapman |

I'm cool with a 7th.
@Hrothdane - My usual thinking is play what brings you the most joy. That said, with a table of 7 it's not a bad idea to have a bard. That said, I think I've played wih your sister-in-arms PC before, so that sways me a bit :)
I plan on bringing my 11th level summoning druid, but if we really need I have a 10th level mad dog barbarian that I can bring if we need melee (which I doubt will be a problem with 7)

![]() |

Sayna was plenty potent in the outing I saw so I wouldn't worry about it - especially for power level :-p
Also, hi all!
Planning on bringing Narayan here - he's a very punchy Monk with a flair for intimidation, and a little extra utility from being a UMD-monkey. If we're completely full up on frontliners and could use a little more support/weird mix of arcane/divine/occult, I've got a bad-touch spiritualist in the wings.
I'm also fine with a 7th for the table - especially if it means someone gets to play who otherwise wouldn't

Sayna it is, then! She has even more tricks since the last time anyone saw her. When she hit 10, her next mummy's mask chronicle hit and she jumped to 11, and cavalier 8 and 9 were big levels for her. The sister-in-arms double order means she now has a couple of kinda ridiculous once per encounter abilities and her new Maiden's Panoply armor means she can't be flatfooted unless every ally within 30 ft is also flatfooted. She also finally got harrying partners which means her dodge bonuses from bodyguard will last a whole round, and they stack :) +4 to AC per bodyguard use!

GM Doug H |

Well, that takes care of the vetting of a 7th.
I removed you from the Google Sheet, Redward, and added the other player so the spot is held.
Thanks for letting us know!

GM Doug H |

It looks like we will have lots of situational buffs floating around, including immediate action movements from Sayna. In general, when a PC has a routine we can depend upon (such as a bard always inspiring courage), I am OK if players assume those abilities get used when acting in the same initiative block but before the buffing PC posts.
The caveat is that the PC should be aware that they may need to amend their actions in order to keep things moving. (For example, if Sayna uses Strategy on the second round of combat 99% of the time but doesn't today, I would ask a PC who assumed they could take an immediat-action move to amend their original action, or for permission to move their token back 1 move before we continue). Hopefully that's not too odious — I suspect we have a communicative group, and that helps a LOT.
I am also happy to start a channel in Slack (we have a Bay Area organized play slack everyone can share), Google Hangouts, or Discord if we think it'll help! Personally, I am a big advocate of supplementing Paizo PbP with an ooc chat channel, especially for a more challenging scenario like this, but I don't want this game to intrude overmuch on anyone's time/comfort level either.
Regardless, this is a very strong group and everyone is doing an excellent job communicating and planning ahead — thank you!

What, telling us Kate was the 7th so we could enthusiastically agree would've been stacking the deck too much? ;-p
(Vixi Trixen from one of your tables of Drowned Delight)
Both of those sound good, though with Sayna, Narayan, and a full complement of fuzzy friends from Chapman, Melody sounds like an especially perfect fit!

@Kirana I won't complain about drakes!
@all Sayna's first action in combat will typically be to use Lion's Call with her standard (+2 competence bonus on attack rolls and +5 competence bonus vs fear saves, people under fear effects get to reroll) and enter Sisterhood Style with her swift, giving her two closest allies the Harrying Partners teamwork feat for a round, which makes it so her bodyguard AC bonuses last for a whole round instead of just one attack each. As she has all three sisterhood style feats, she gives an untyped +1 to reflex and will saves to all allies within 20 ft once she has entered it. Also, she and any adjacent allies do not provide soft cover against their allies' attacks, so ranged attack from behind the front line to your heart's content :D
I'm going to figure out a good way to format all her different buffs and effects as best I can before we start, just so we are reminded of them.

If you can distill that to a few lines I can macro it into the top of initiative blocks inside a spoiler. For example:

Lazlo, I am one who leaves no pun unanswered. I can sense we have a budding rivalry. :-p
A toast then! May our futures in this strange be rosé!

GM Doug H |

We start Monday morning! I will probably put up the intro post around midnight Sunday. Please be ready to introduce your characters and finalize any paperwork needed.
Organizing Aid Tokens
GM Hawthwile created a table that will help PCs collaborate on where to commit their aid characters, ensuring all the main areas are covered.
It's on Slide 2. Please fill it out with the role you think best fits your PC! I think this will help our group get better organized using this complex subsystem.
Heroic Aiding
Now that we are close to starting I want to alert you to an option that lets you do something called "Heroic Aid" with your aid characters.
At the start of the game, you get 3 aid tokens for each of your Aid PCs.
You can attempt to upgrade these tokens for better results. However, doing so runs the risk of injuring the character; this means they cannot participate in the other aid missions during the scenario. They may even outright die.
These tasks are particularly difficult for lower-level characters.
Please let me know if you want your character to attempt a heroic aid. You MUST do this when we start the scenario, not later on.
I will then ask you to make rolls for heroic aid tokens when we begin on Monday. The outcome of the roll determines the consequences of your efforts.
I have included the aid token effects on the google slide for you as well, so you are fully informed about any decisions you make in upgrading a character's token to Heroic.
Distributing Aid Tokens
A quick reminder about aid tokens: you cannot use aid tokens generated from this table, only ones received from others. If we receive an aid token that needs to be activated I will do so as soon as two people agree on its use to avoid slowing things down. You can only use two aid tokens per encounter.
You have the chance to pass on an aid token at the end of the introduction and following each substantial encounter. If you hand out a heroic token you may hand out a second token, heroic or otherwise.
To save on time, I am likely to just pick a table unless you make a particular request for where you want them to go.
Google Slides still need to be completed with character info
Only Viognier has filled out the spreadsheet with initiative and perception mods.
Please do this — I have 3 tables to run this convention in addition to other games that I am GMing online outside the convention.
It's a big help if I don't have to extract the info I need to run combat by hand from your profile!
Google Hangouts
I've started a google hangout for the group. You can join here: https://hangouts.google.com/group/UXGoM2aimazVxrzE6
This is optional, but there is a ton of extraneous work to do here getting the scenario underway for PCs.
Several of you already know where to find me on slack, as well!
TL;DR on how Aid Tokens work in this game
1. You can choose 3 other PCs to help the pathfinders on special missions.
2. You get 3 aid tokens at the start of the scenario; the table can hand these tokens to other tables at certain points during the game.
3. You can optionally upgrade your tokens at the start of the game by attempting a dangerous "heroic aid" attempt.
4. Characters who succeeded at heroic aid get upgraded tokens to share.
5. Characters who failed at heroic aid are out for the rest of the game and do not get tokens.
6. During the scenario, you can also send NPCs on special ops missions to help the collective effort, so you need PCs throughout the game as well, not just to generate tokens.

![]() |

I filled out all three slides. I've joined the Hangout.
Also, I don't think I'll be trying to bump up any of the tokens to Heroic to start off. Mostly because I'm not looking forward to showing you all my poor rolling.

GM Doug H |

It was tough picking characters to be out of commission for the next couple of months!
You can also not use all three slots, and just use generic pathfinders. They just can't get heroic bonuses. So if you're worried about characters being decommissioned for a couple of months this is also an option.

I did end up getting Narayan 1 more game in, so he'll be starting out at 11 (and bumping his Day Job roll up to a 28), but since my aid characters are on the lower end of the spectrum, I'll forego heroics for them.
I'll also be using up Narayan's 'Graveknight's Gratitude' boon to 'borrow' a Ring of the Sublime from the Grand Lodge's vaults for the duration of the scenario.
