How far from the drake to main group? Or at least line of sight?

It is 75 feet to the bottom of the cavern. Scramsax is 15' above that, the drake is also 15' above and coming at Scramsax from along the wall. So 60' away from those at the top. Visibility is very limited due to the steam and darkness. (Mostly the steam since I think everyone has some form of enhanced vision.) All attacks beyond 30' are at disadvantage or do not have line of sight. You can make a DC20 Perception check to get momentary LOS and/or eliminate the disadvantage for one turn.

If my last post is too obscure, its about leaf identification by their features (as if Scram is an expert). I (player and physical, not biological, scientist) was always horrible at that with the conservationist's little guide books...

Gunnar: Sorry, I thought I had written that into a post somewhere along the way, but now I can't find it. So here you go, the cavern opening is approximately 70' long and 40' wide. Depth is 75'. Overall shape is Kind of a jagged oval but with the two ends coming more to a point than rounded.

So, there is the “cavern” and what seemed like an entrance to the place where the creatures are coming out.

As written: “A shadow looms in the entrance. The elongated image of a creature moves forward until a scaled, white head emerges through the opening. Its nostrils flare seemingly unfazed by the stench of the pool itself as it glances around the opening.“

Gunnar is planning to ready an action to cast Wall of Stone over the “opening” mentioned above. The idea is that as the dragon hurtles forward to join the battle, it is instead walled in at the opening and hits a stone wall. This only works if the opening that they are coming through is somewhat smaller than the entire size of the cavern at our ground level.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Gunnar: Just to clarify, the quoted passage and description is from when Scramsax had climbed down to the bottom of the main cave. The cavern opening described is about 75' down below the entrance at the surface. That describes the drake appearing down below. Only Scramsax really saw and then she raced back up the rope to the top where the rest of you were waiting. This was at the same time you and the other discovered the second drake in the trees.

Now, the four drakes just emerged from the upper opening in the ground (more like a well or crack in the earth). You could attempt to block the upper opening, but the 'wall' would need to be bigger than the opening otherwise it will just fall down into the pool below. (This could still be effective in blocking the lower opening, but right now nobody has line of sight down below because of the drakes.)

The 'lower' opening is smaller. About 50' x 40'.

Luthael: Sure, I'll let you replace SW with HW. To get Scramsax back on her feet. And since it looks like she didn't take any other actions this round, she can take a move action to clear the area and find cover.

Yes I was sort of also wondering about that last round. These fart-frost attacks bypass all of rogue's usual defenses so yeah, she really needs to gtfo if possible.

Quote:
Can Scram get an estimate of range on the unusual breath attack? If evasion is impossible, perhaps she can at least stay out of range. Will get beyond that range, if so, using bonus dash if needed.

Would like to steer clear of the blast zone, in other words.

If Gunnar can use his Inspiration to reroll the number of berserkers, he would like to…

Number of Berserkers: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3) + 2 = 8

Gunnar: Sure you can use your inspiration for that.

Scramsax: It is a 40' cone, so you should be able to Dash to a safe distance without any trouble.

Gunnar: How would you like to direct the berserkers? 2 on each drake? 4 on 2 drakes? Some other combination? There are currently 4 enemies visible and attacking.

Hmm...

Gunnar is balancing concentrating fire against the drakes versus clumping up to make a tempting target for breath weapons. Let's say the Berserkers are glory hounds and uninterested in sharing credit for the kill with party members. They will split up and attack the two newly-arrived drakes that are further back and currently unengaged.

Berserkers on unengaged drake 1: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Remainder of Berserkers on other unengaged drake (7).

I expect they will attack recklessly --> Berserkers

Lutheal: They have spread out along the length of the cavern opening which is about 75 feet. For a fireball, I would roll a d3 to see how many you can get, something like burning hands would be a d2. Also those who are engaged would likely be affected as well by an AOE.

Worst thing ever having wife in hospital.

Thanks all for the good thoughts. Her surgery (cataract removal and a canaloplasty) went well and she's home resting comfortably.

All I can say is this getting old thing sucks. But the fact that modern medicine can remove the lens from a persons eye and replace it with a bit of plastic and also basically roto-rooter the eye's drainage canal to treat glaucoma is pretty amazing. It's completely anxiety producing and yes, definitely makes ones eyes water just thinking about it. But still, it's amazing.

Glad the wife is doing well. Sorry. Missed that news earlier

Yeah eye surgery has been the most pain I've ever felt. Couldn't do lasik to correct my vision, so I had lens put in my eyes. I was awake with local anesthetic, but it was painful when they pushed into my eyes while I had to stare constantly forward.

And my dad has had two cornea transplants, so I'm sure I've got that to look forward to.

I assume the dragon avoided the wall of fire. Is there any tactical reason to maintain the wall now that the dragon is beyond it?

Edit. It doesn't look like you rolled the dragon's save vs Luthael's readied Sacred Flame rolled in post.

thanks

Gunnar: Got it. I must have missed that. Give that, then I think we can call the last drake dead just prior to the dragon's arrival. No one would know for certain because of the fog. Then most of the berserkers run with the dragon's arrival.

”Into the fog cloud, Warriors of Valhalla, to the aid of your brother in arms!” commands Gunnar as the other drakes fall. With the dragon arrival imminent, he hopes that being away from the fog cloud himself and his companions being somewhat scattered will lessen the tactical impact of the inevitable Draconic Breath Weapon.

Moving to be away from his companions enough to make targeting from the dragon breath difficult, Gunnar prepares his mightiest spell, intending to cast it just in time to block the torrent of death nearly upon them!

(Readied Action to cast Wall of Stone directly in front of the Dragon as it looses its breath weapon. Intent is to shape it to block line of effect to as many of his allies as possible. If we get lucky it crashes into the wall afterwards!)

Gunnar was hoping the berserkers might be busy in the fog cloud with the drake and not be too affected by the dragon’s arrival, but even just the sound of such a creature must be terrifying.

If all but one fail their saves, they will mostly be a non-factor anyway, in the fog cloud or not. Gunnar is going to try a nature check to see what he knows about this dragon before he goes…

Ingrys wants to kill the hag.

If we go for it here is my post I was working on.

Ingryds response:

" So a hag got you too" Ingryd says quietly. She gripped her necklace. She knew how that felt being in the grips of a Hags manipulations.

" She used you, why? For what? And what did she take in return?" It was infuriating. The Dragon a mighty beast laid low by one of those disgusting crones machinations.

" I know your pain! I know what you feel! By the gods, I know what that feels like." She growled angry the loss welling up pushing that bit in her. The emotional turmoil that fuels Ingryds quest.

" I lost my family to one such as she. First she took my children, she...she ate them! All that remained was..." She stopped and then let out a anguished growl before she continued.

" Then in our confrontation my husband took a blow meanr for me, he died as I took my weapon and sent the b%$+& back to Hell!!!" Ingryd said angry and sad

" I want this Hag gone. She effects the village, effects the dragons forced her, and effects you. Effects you enough to rely on those who would kill you for the trangessions of your underlings!" Ingryd was shaking now angry and honest.

" So if you want her dead fine. I want her dead. This though isnt our fault its hers and her Machnations. My sin was not just saying No to my hag, I should have confronted her first and foremost! Yourswas somethinf similar. So Dragon. You want this Hag gone, so be it. I have nothinf to loose save my life, which you seem to think is worthless. When I kill this Hag, take her severed head and bring it back its not because some capitulating Dragon told me. Its because I chose to stop her Manipulations with everything I have left. So then we will have a talk. One that may prove fruitful for even one as mighty as you" Ingryd says as she turns and walks away.

As she does her heart races. Her breathing becomes more frequent and that hint of sweat returns. She had told off a dragon. She had promised to kill this hag, but not for the dragon, but because of how similar she saw what happened to hee in this dragon.
